Oscars This Sunday - 10th Annual Elite Predictions until then!
« on: February 22, 2008, 06:03:00 am »
I don't know if I'd call this a fantastic year for film, but it was most certainly a fantastic November and December, and as a result we've got one of the best sets of Oscar-nominated movies ever heading down the home stretch!  Jon Stewart is hosting this year's event, which begins at 8pm EST on Sunday night.  Until then you've got an opportunity to try your hand at predicting this year's winners.  Now up until last year I had a great unbeaten streak going, having won every year of Elite preds, but unfortunately I finished third last time around... oh well, time to start a new streak!

The best way to compete is to join our Elite picking group at the official site for the Academy.  (If you've ever competed with us at NFL Pick'Em or March Madness at ESPN, you can use that same username and pass to log in.)

Site: http://predict.oscar.go.com/predict/frontpage
- Log in, make picks, then click Join a Group.  We're
The Oscar Elite
Password: elite

Whoever makes the best picks this year wins diamonds or something!  You can check on the site if you're interested.
---

Don't have an ABC/ESPN login, and too lazy to sign up for one?  Luckily you can also compete simply by filling in the bubbles on this picture!

Fill in the bubbles in Paint and then either mail me the jpg (ngamer@gmail.com) or throw it up somewhere and post the link here.  Do so and I'll score your entry Sunday night so that you'll be in the running just like people who used the site.

And now, here are all the pictures nominated for awards this season.  (If the title is bold, that means I've seen it.)

Got my picks in. I wasn't sure I'd do a Top Ten this year, but I guess I will in a few days. I've seen under 200 films though, a far cry from last year.

Plum dude, Superbad is actually really good. I could really related to Michael Cera's character. It was an insightful fun movie.

lol @ all the documentaries I've never heard of.
'Sicko' is the only exception - haven't seen it though.

Ratatouille would have to win best animated feature wouldn't it? There's no competition in that category!

I saw The King of Kong last night, and I'm baffled as to why it's not nominated for Best Documentary! Some of the Onion AV Club's staff has it in their Top 10 movies of the year. It was basically a documentary on The Elite, with Jon Bearder starring as Twin Galaxies' owner Walter Day.

Excellent timing QB, as I decided yesterday that it wouldn't be fair to construct my final Top Ten without seeing two more films

* 3:10 to Yuma
* The King of Kong

So I just bought both DVDs. I've got high hopes for these films!

Just saw the King of Kong. I highly recommend it to all eliters, especially those who compete actively at a high level in GE/PD/TS/whatever. I think you can draw parallels from the guys in the documentary to members of the elite but I couldn't come up with a good enough set yet. It was amazing to see that extremely high level competition in video games actually exists outside of here A great thought provoking watch for sure. I've also seen Sicko and I thought The King of Kong at around the same quality of film so I am surprised it didn't get nominated for best documentary.

Nice job with the picking Jon. On the web site I didn't see where you could check out other people's picks. I thought you could do that in previous years.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the films in any category. My picks were based on various jibber-jabber picked up on the web along with a little intuition. The two actress awards surprised me though. I figured Cate Blanchett was a lock for Supporting Actress and would lose votes to a sentimental favorite, Julie Christie for Lead Actress.

Oh yeah, I was thinking the pool would open up to allow you to see all the picks during the ceremony or something, but looks like it never happened.  So, here were my picks for the big cats:

Ngamer's Picks
Best Picture (10 points)
* No Country for Old Men

Best Director (8 points)
* Joel Coen and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men

Best Actor (5 points)
* Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood

Best Actress (5 points)
* Julie Christie - Away from Her

Best Supporting Actor (3 points)
* Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men

Best Supporting Actress (3 points)
* Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone

Best Original Screenplay (3 points)
* Juno - Diablo Cody

Best Adapted Screenplay (3 points)
* No Country for Old Men

Best Cinematography (2 points)
* Robert Elswit - There Will Be Blood

Best Film Editing (2 points)
* Christopher Rouse - The Bourne Ultimatum
---

The others I got right...

Editing - Bourne
Makeup - La Mome
Score - Attonement
Song - Once
Sound Editing - Bourne
Animated - Ratatouille
Short Doc - Freeheld
Short Animated - Peter and the Wolf

Which means I missed

Art Direction - Sweeney Todd ( I said Blood, because I generally like to pick something here that was also nommed for Cinematog)
Costume Design - Elizabeth (I thought Todd would get thrown the bone here instead, glad it went the way it did instead)
Sound Mixing - Bourne ( I had No Country, this was basically a Return of the King-style momentum pick)
Visual Effect - Golden Compass (had Transformers, natch, and assumed like everyone else it was a lock.  I'm happy to see Compass take it though; the movie had many faults, but bad special effects wasn't one of them)
Foreign Language - Falscher (had 12 but without confidence, this felt like a crapshoot)
Documentary - Taxi to the Dark Side (had No End and liked its chances alot, not sure what happened here)
Short Film - Pickpocket (had Tanghi on a whim)

Jon Stewart is getting rave reviews for his job as host this year, as well he should be. My favorites lines of the night...

"Normally when you see a black man or a woman president, an asteroid is about to hit the Statue of Liberty."

"Even Norbit got a nomination, which I think is great. Too often, the academy ignores movies that aren't good."

"Whoever owns the Boeing 707 parked on La Brea Avenue, your landing lights are on *John Travolta runs on stage, grabs keys from Jon, and rushes for the door* "Don't worry, it's a hybrid".

"Cate Blanchett is the woman who can't be stopped. She played Elizabeth. She played Bob Dylan. In No Country for Old Men she played the pitbull chasing Josh Brolin."

"In case you're wondering what we do during the ad breaks. Mostly, we sit around and make catty remarks about what you're wearing at home."

"Diablo Cody, what an amazing story. She used to be an exotic dancer, and now she's an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. I hope you're enjoying the pay cut."

"Our next presenter speaks four languages, and earlier in the evening she taught me 'I'm calling security' in all of them. Please welcome Penelope Cruz.

"Tonight we look beyond the dark days to focus on happier fare -- this year's slate of Oscar-nominated psychopathic killer movies. Does this town need a hug? No Country For Old Men, Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood. All I can say is: Thank God for teen pregnancy."

"To really appreciate [Lawrence of Arabia] you have to see it in widescreen." *turns his iPhone sideways*

But the best by far was allowing the girl from Once to come back up and give her award speech (which ended up being probably the best of the night). That's being overwhelmingly voted as the most memorable moment of the night on IMDB right now; what a classy move.

I agree with Jon and everyone else that Jon Stewart did a great job. I think he had better lines than the ones Jon mentioned but I can't think of them right now.

oh yeah the pregnant actresses count and then the "but Jack is here, so we'll re-tally at the end of the night" was great.

also "someone just took the lead in their oscar pool on a guess!" after whatever award it was given there was hilarious.  Especially cause Jon took the lead in our pool because of that guess

Just admit that you've seen about 2 of the films I mentioned and have no idea what you're talking about.

Jon's list will be the 10 movies he most enjoyed out of the 25 he's seen.

Dead wrong.  I've seen 35 films this year.

The "Oscar poll on a guess" line was funny enough, but I didn't include it because it was somewhat insulting to me.  Everyone else had already chalked up that Sound win to Transformers, but I was confident in Bourne all along.  I skilled my way into the lead, not lucked!

"And the baby goes to..." was ok but a little bit tacky.  However, I'd forgotten that part at the end when he said he's have to re-tally because of Jack.  Yeah, that puts it over the top, worthy of including.

Oh, and forgot about playing Wii Sports with that 11 year old girl!  Between that and the iPhone and mentioning imdb you could see how Jon was making an effort to play to the 20-something crowd, and I'll bet that when the numbers come in for the show, it'll have paid off.  But yeah, when's the last time you could play a videogame in front of hundreds of millions of non-gamers and still expect them to know what's going on?  Probably not since Pac-Man.  The Wii has come a long way in such a short time, that's for sure.

omg "according to imdb.com, the star of untitled Nicole Kidman project 2010... Nicole Kidman!" was the one I thought was funniest. My sisters and I almost died laughing while my mom looked at us like she does when we start singing "Brothers Forever" at the dinner table.
