Elite Fantasy Baseball & MLB Betting 2008
« on: February 28, 2008, 08:41:00 am »
We're back and better than ever!  This year we're going a bit more standard with the league, using 5 scoring categories each for offense/pitching.  R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG and W, K, SV, ERA, WHIP.  We're also adding the Corner Infielder and Middle Infielder positions to switch things up a little bit!  This will be a 12 team league as always, and the following are invited back for another year of great competition:

Come
Ngamer
QB
Boss
Wheat
packattack
Shep
DarkHawk
wiff
Youse

That means that there are 2 spots open for new players (or those who want to return but aren't on the list).  The only exception is Alec, whose poor performance last year has earned him a lifetime ban from Elite Fantasy Baseball!

Anyone on the list will find the league ID and password in their Yuku inbox (click the little letter thing at the top of the screen).  Currently the draft date/time is set at Saturday March 8th, 11:00AM EDT.  I'd like to keep the draft on a weekend so we get a nice turnout, but the date/time are manageable as long as it's before March 19th.  Let me know if the current draft date works for you, and if not, what we can all agree on changing it to.

Good luck!

HOLD UP!

We had a discussion about this in Chat a few weeks back where everyone (I think it was Boss/QB/wheat/myself at the time) was in favor of sticking with on base percentage rather than average.  Personally I maintain that stance.  Otherwise the changes look good; we had also agreed at the time that CGs needed to go.

I'd also like to just throw it out there- if two new interested "good sports" can't be found, I'd be perfectly fine going with a 10 man league this season.

As for the starting date, boooo.  I'd much rather keep to the Saturday morning tradition, since every Sunday is going to be trouble for me.

I'm in favor of just leaving the 10 people as they are. Can't wait to have another top 3 pick get hurt opening day and not play the rest of the season.

Draft Date Change:

Saturday March 8th, 11:00AM EDT

This will better accommodate Ngamer for sure, and maybe some others.  But, it's dependent on all 10/12 people joining the league in time!  If they aren't in by Friday, I'll have to move the draft back to Sunday the 16th.

Currently this league is not associated with any previous seasons. If you have played in previous seasons, your League Commissioner can set up the All Time results from Commissioner Tools: Set League History.

Dooooo it. Pretty awesome draft time! I've joined now, which takes us to 6. wheat I assume is making his way there, but where's Boss? I'll get in touch with Youse over facebook or somesuch, but DH is going to be a challenge...

EDIT - Whoo, Boss is in now!  Just two left.

I estimate a 98% chance that wheat grades my draft as a D or lower. 85% chance I finish ahead of him.

Yeah, I agree. The idea is to have the draft as close to opening day as possible to lessen the chance of having injured players straight from the get go.

Hey, I'm wondering if I can get in on this if you guys still need those extra players? I placed second in the MK sites' league last year and I'd like to join this one.

(Also, if any of you want to join another, highly uncompetitive league, you're welcome to put a team in the MK sites league, find the topic on their board. They only have about 5-6 people interested already and are looking for at least 8...)

This.

Still, settings look reasonable, so I guess I'm in.  I might not be awake for the draft, but I should be able to get a decent enough pre ranking in if not.  I haven't had enough time to sort out a great draft strategy this year yet.  Not like the one that netted me a Y! public league win and a (sigh) Y! winner's league 2nd last year, anyway.

Can't wait for those Fantasy updates!

Flashdance wasn't insulting out league, guys, he was just saying that the Kart league wasn't very active last year.

Speaking of active, PDO joined yesterday and Youse is about to get in, which will put us at the 10 we were looking for.  Although we could certainly go back to 12 if there was enough interest.  Flash, hang around a few more days in case DarkHawk comes back in time to join, but if not, I wouldn't have a problem with your joining us.  Assuming, of course, that you would assure me of your plans to stay active the entire season.

Sounds good, NGamer64. Of course I wasn't insulting your league, maybe I should've used (highly uncompetitive) to clarify myself.

Just hit me up here or something if there ends up being a spot for me. Don't worry about commitment, I live baseball from March to October.

Boss is an idiot and waited until 2 days until draft time to tell us he wouldn't make it, so we're changing AGAIN.

Sun Mar 16 11:30am EDT is the new draft date/time.  Even gave you fellas 30 minutes more sleep! (Yahoo had all the 11:00 and 11:15 spots full)

We're rolling with AVG, Pack.  Next year we'll do OBP again.

Remember, we draft in one day and 15 hours.

What's this about Boss dropping out? He's the three-time defending Champ- that's the stupidest thing I ever heard. But whatever.

With no DarkHawk in sight, I'd say it's time to let Flash in as our 10th man.

Fuck Boss. Makes us change the draft date just for him and now he's not even going to play. Not like he has anything better to do with his life anyways.

Sent the league info to Flasher, so hopefully he'll join in time since we need an even number to be able to draft.

I'm really looking forward to this season, after that draft of mine.  Not sure how wheat's going to end up scoring it, but in my own mind I'd have to say it went as well as I could have hoped for.  As an example, here's how one top fantasy site rated my players, based on their '08 projections:

* Brandon Webb - Fantasy's Third Best Pitcher (behind only Santana and Peavy)
    Justin Verlander - #7 Pitcher
* Ryan Howard - #2 First Baseman
* JJ Putz - #1 Relief Pitcher
* Joe Mauer - #3 Catcher
* B.J. Upton - #3 Second Baseman
* Matt Holiday - #1 Outfielder
* Adrian Beltre - #9 Third Baseman
* Michael Young - #8 Shortstop

Additionally, 6 of my picks (Holliday, Howard, Webb, Upton, Putz, Markakis) project as Top 30 Fantasy scorers for the coming season.

Talk about stacked!

subject says it all.

Anyways, yeah, overslept the draft but I actually had a dream about landing Santana somehow...  weird.  I'm not even THAT upset with how the autopick turned out for me.  I hate the Mets so having my first 2 picks be those guys was crappy, in fact, Wright is one of my favorite players to boo when he comes to town.  Whatevs, 8th pick I'll take him.  Kind of upset with teh Granderson pick because he clearly had the best season of his career last year.  Now I'm just that team who overspent on a UFA  Maybe a reach for Rios, but he could be on the verge of a monster year with Toronto's lineup shakeup and also the fact that he's entering his prime... his #s have steadily risen each year he's been in the league.  (My favorite team is actually the Blue Jays in addition to the Phils, so I'm glad I have Rios).  I'm also fine with Jeter and Hafner... man, if Hafner bounces back to his 2k4-2k6 form, watch out.

My draft starts to fall apart around 9th round, since I only pre-ranked so much.  A ton of crappy picks.

Overall, autopick did better than I thought it would.  I really feared getting stuck with Pujols but luckily that didn't happen.

Self Analysis--my goal into this draft was to fill out the entire offensive lineup first--and that didn't happen. If I didn't get first I was rooting for the back hoping to either get Utley/Howard, Cabrera/Howard or one of those guys/Fielder. (in other words--come's slot) Stuck pick at #4 obviously not taking Pujols. Bedard was a I didn't like any of the offensive players here pick (would've taken the same guy that I did later). Same with the Krod pick. (although I wish that guy was so on the cubs) beltran was a stuck pick as well. That spot really sucked. (I see Howard/Sizemore two picks in front and am thinking--could Size possibly fall? please please please... you teasers )

Carlos Guillen was a target pick so I could either put him at SS or MI. Basically I'm playing a 1B at MI which is a pretty nice advantage. Tigers were also target picks seeing as I think they've got the best offense I've ever seen (even if Mags only hits .300 the RBI/R numbers have to be 100/100 easy. Then I reached on some pitchers late thinking their K rates were better than they were (I almost picked Buchholz before Wang--doh) Orlando Hudson was a waste pick. Carpenter [censored] owes me (I thought I was going to stash him on the DL draft Marcum next then add a Maybin type--oops lol. [DL's don't start till season starts ]

Thought I stole Pena, was really going to take McCann or Soto at catcher very late but Posada (who I believe was #1 in runs and RBI for C's last year) in round 10 (b/c he plays DH a lot) was a move I thought I had to pull.

Overall it's a D+ draft; too many reaches, one boneheaded pick, but I'm okay with the squad now. (until that top 3 pick gets injured game 1 of the year again...)

Other squads
come same first two I would've done--I think even victor at 3rd round's a reach I thought beckett at four was too risky (see injury history) [then again I took bedard lol...] Pence was too early, Tejada's declining and he's in Houston's bad offense. Everything else is fine... A- (what an A? are you kidding?) well done overall.

wiff Pujols at 7 isn't THAT bad guys. Helton at 6, Pedroia at 7 was insanity. Lowell at 9. (how'd ngamer let Daisuke fall to 12 anyway?) other picks seem fine to me though except his staff would concern me as being pretty damn old
D+

packattack
catcher at 3, ortiz over fielder and howard--I can't justify that. lol at autopick taking Pierre at 9 looooooooooooool Josh Hamilton was a guy I thought I was going to select but I filled up on OF too fast.

C

boss a big F- for leaving because (and he did say this) he didn't have enough free time to play both fantasy golf and fantasy baseball. Yeah, wtf. Fantasy golf everybody's not even changing for rounds boss--heck in fantasy baseball I didn't even bother to note actual pitcher K rates. The draft even got moved just for him.

youse's autopick draft
ugh at Granderson/Rios/Hafner. Granderson can't really hit for AVG, hits a ton of solo HR's, and doesn't really get SB's... I don't get why he's a third despite loving the tigers O. (we don't have a triples category or that actually would've not been bad) [and bad RBI's]
although at autopick you're pretty much stuck with Andruw Jones lol.

Draft's a C for an autopick draft.

PDO's autopick draft
well he's going to win SB. Might as well just hand him those points. Too bad there's like no power and no RBI's to go with it.
B for an autopicker. The picks as a whole aren't bad.

Ngamer's pathetic draft I mean what can I say about this pile of crap? BJ upton at 3 is a major stretch. so is a closer with one great year at 5. I laughed at Markakis at 6. Verlander's probably a reach at 7
You can't rely on two guys to hit ALL of your HR's and ALL of your RBI's can you and win a league like this? Lidge lolz.

Okay the whole pathetic/crap stuff is a joke but this draft is just a .... C-

QB
okay I have to admit QB's a stud, taking about everyone I wanted to take at some point. Just Fantastic. (and I mean [****] you by that) but... offensively it seemed to me he was reaching a little with some of the early picks. Swisher at 12 is a bit optimistic. A few other picks I thought were wastes but they were at the end so nothing lost really.

A-

time for shep
shep doesn't care about baseball yet he actually knows stuff. I mean I had a brit and flash and an autopicker going between my picks. I should've gotten to be able to just clean up the place but NOOOOOOOO.
Still don't get the Brandon Phillips love but okay... With the lead in SV, and solid in many cats--this guy could easily contend for a title. Unthinkable predraft. (AVG seems bad and sheets is usually out by May but...)
A draft! Points for being a brit come through with the best draft grade that wheat will ever give out.

flash in the pan
Mccann at 4, Lackey at 6 (when exactly did this turn into autopicks?) Greene at 8, Hill at 9 made everyone bust out in laughter. A lot of the other picks are guys coming off bad years but not really drafted low. (escobar was a good pick--salty at 15 was terrible) the back end was all autopick and that showed. First three solid though.

I'm just giving the D- here and be done with it.

So in order of grade
shep
come
QB
PDO
pack
youse
ngamer
wheat
wiff
flash

ugh 8th for myself--I'll bet anyone (and everyone) I will finish higher than that though!

I don't think I'll ever be better than mediocre at drafting. I like my team a lot more than last year post draft and I finished 4th there so I think I can finish at least that high again, maybe better. I think you did better than a D+ Wheat but that is just my opinion.

Hah...yep. I was on Autopick for the first 3 picks and the last 8 or so...hehe. So basically the ones that were worst were all the ones I had to pick myself hah! This was my first time to do a draft live, I've never been able to make a draft time before this one. I basically picked whoever I had heard of before...should've done some research or something maybe, on like....draft technique or something.
