Top 10 Most Overrated Films of the-elite Era

10. American History X  (1999)

Sure it's a decent film, but it is commonly put on lists of the greatest films of the contemporary era.  Is it really that good?  I mean
Spoiler
the kid dies in the end so how can you be happy with that
.

9. Titanic (1997)

TL;DW.  Jimbo says almost 100% accurate?  Who cares!  You didn't watch Avatar because it was realistic.

8. Spiderman 2 (2004)

I've never seen this, but if you have, you're probably a sheeple person who only saw it because your friends in high school or middle school made you.

7. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)

A valiant effort at completing the trilogy, but it just fell short of the expectations from it's first two.  Comparable to The Godfather III in that it's a fair movie standalone, but just couldn't live up to the hype of being the 3rd after 2 masterpieces.

6. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Pretty much an all round troll movie.

5. The Matrix (1999)

It's funny how everyone thinks Keanu Reeves is a bad actor, and then everyone always faps over his performance in this film.  It wasn't that good.  I mean sure, it was a very decent Hollywood acting performance, but it wasn't on the elite level of a Daniel Day Lewis or Shia LeBeouf.  Aside from acting, the storyline & special effects weren't great either, but it's still regarded as one of the finest of the generation.

4. Gladiator (2000)

It's not a very good movie.  There really is no plot.  It's just Russell Crowe fighting gladiators and stuff.  It's about as interesting as watching a 3 hour regular season sporting event; which we all love, but there are 82 games per year.  Certainly not worthwhile to be immortalized as a Best Picture and mega-grosser.  The Roman set and cinematography makes it look quite good, but if you compare it to Ben-Hur from 40 years earlier, it completely pales in comparison.  On top of this, it contributed to the extremely troll run of Crowe (Gladiator) > Hanks (Cast Away) and then Washington (Training Day) > Crowe (A Beautiful Mind) for Oscar Best Actors, pretty much jewing out Hanks from his 3rd Oscar for Best Actor and giving it to Denzel Washington.  What a crock!

3. The Hangover (2009)

It's not funny.  All the humor pieces are extremely textbook.  OH, HIS SUNBURN HURTS.  OH, HE FOUND A BABY.  OH, HE MARRIED A STRIPPER.  I mean what is this... Jersey Shore?  Queue Alecboy to rant about just how boring The Hangover is.  I could literally have written all the funny bits in this movie when I was 11 years old; except I couldn't have because I'm not a mindless sheep who thinks things are funny when they're not.  I just saw the trailer for The Hangover 2 and there's a monkey walking around with "the wolfpack."  That's supposed to be funny?  And yet I know plenty of people who actually would think that's funny.  Cue an incoming suicide.

2. There Will Be Blood (2007)

I've never seen it but I hear it's really good, so in order to make this an effective troll list, it belongs here.

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

Let's go over why people like this movie;

-good acting
-good special effects
-unique story

Acting?  Maggie Gyllenhaal is enough to put anyone on perma-lifetilt.  On top of this, Heath Ledger is no better than he should have been.  He did a fine portrayal of The Joker, but could you have expected any less?  If some hack was in there, we'd all be complaining about the acting job, so it's not even like Heath did better than would have been necessary.  So in other words, it was completely average.  And this seems to be the basis for its high acclaim.

Special effects?  Are there transforming robots?  No!  Are there aliens shooting up garbage dumps in South Africa?  No!  Are there blue people running around a planet with floating mountains?  HELL NO.  THE SPECIAL EFFECTS SUCK.

Storyline? "OMG LOL THE GUY WAS GOOD BUT THEN HE BECAME BAD AND NOW THEYRE JUST GONNA PRETEND HE WAS GOOD ALL ALONG FLIP A COIN OLOL."  Wow nice movie.

0. Inception (2010)

"omg the t0p wuz sp1nning!!!  :nesquik:"

The special effects weren't great either

Goose's list is troll except for The Hangover, where he's basically spot on.

considering Jon asked me to "troll" the thread with my list, I think it's pretty safe to say that it isn't legit.

Except for the top 5, but I threw TWBB in there for bonus trolls.

EDIT - I FORGOT INCEPTION

oh well Inception can be #0, in other words, more overrated than The Dark Knight.

Who do you suggest would have better played Neo? It's like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones or Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. They didn't win oscars, but they were perfect for the role and played it as good as anyone could have. I'm not saying I am a Keanu fan by any means, but complaining about his performance deserves a big WTF , at least if you did enjoy the Matrix anyway.

Also, how can you really say something is overrated on the basis of it not being "great"? Define greatness please.

Acke's Top Ten Movies You Haven't Seen, But Really Should!

Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

This avantgardesque feature film, presented by Francis Ford Coppola, soars across the United States in search of places both natural and man-made. It's one of the few films in its genre to reach a bigger audience and it's simply spellbinding in every way. It took nearly 6 years (!) to make the film and about 3 years to write the mesmerizing score by minimalist composer Philip Glass. Koyaanisqatsi features groundbreaking time-lapse photography and is filled with unforgettable images. "So rich in beauty and detail that with each viewing it becomes a new and different film". Whatever you do, do NOT watch it on a small screen.

Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie) (1972)

Arguably the best surrealistic movie ever made and to date my personal favourite. Seldom has a filmmaker like Buñuel, considered the father of movie-surrealism, joked so much with his audience. Won the Oscar for best foreign language film.

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

My favourite Woody Allen film to date. This is an unforgettable black-comedy where heavy-drama and comedy often blur into one. Martin Landau is especially good.

Jean De Florette Part 1 and 2 (1986)

This is a gripping, if somewhat quite slow (never tedious though), french tale of greed, pride and love. Builds up to a very rewarding anti-climax.

Häxan (Witchcraft Through the Ages) (1922)

In 1922, this was an huge economic disaster for "Svensk Filmindustri" but is now regarded as one of the most unique silent movies (and movies in general) ever made. Häxan was very expensive to make; combining documentary segments with true horror elements, it is, unlike many other regarded silent classics, not the least boring today to people in our generation. And the subject in matter is very fascinating imo and should be for everyone. I'm fortunate enough to have a swedish release of this movie with a haunting score. If you're looking for a suggestive as well as an one-of-a-kind movie experience, look no further.

Idi i smotri (Come and See) (1985)

Extremely underseen masterpiece. This is the russian "Apocalypse Now" and war as Hollywood never could portray it.

Dersu Uzala (1975)

Being a Kurosawa film, this one is rather underrated compared to his other works. Long but rewarding. Made in Soviet.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)

Classic chiller is very electrifying. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford detested each other in real life, and no wonder the movie is so cruel. It's over 2 hours long, but it will be over before you know it.

The Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar) (1955-1959)

The very first films from India that I've seen. Trilogy is almost to be compared with the Godfathers; beautiful, intense, epic in its simplicity and truly amazing in every way. I expected it to be good, but this blew me away. Perhaps it's because of the fact I've never seen anything quite like it before. I especially adored the first installment "Pather Panchali".

Fail-Safe (1964)

This is "Dr. Strangelove"'s cousin. Unlike "Dr. Strangelove", it is very serious. The somewhat underrated filmmaker Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Network, Dog Day Afternoon) directs this EXTREMELY suspenseful movie with top-notch performances by all its cast. Unforgettable climax. A purely intelligent, thoughtful and provoking film and it's a shame it's only on one of icheckmovies's top lists.

OK, so strictly speaking this was not 10 but 13 movies. Anyway, I hope you'll check out any of these movies soon!

I made these picks a couple weeks ago when The Social Network had more momentum, so I'll probably lose for not going crazy with The King's Speech, but I really disliked the movie and don't want to support it. TSN is an underdog and thats pretty funny. Go Facebook!

So Third was pretty much right about our Oscar prediction format sucking, since there's no reason to stray from picking all the big favorites and not putting much thought into it. Also it's kind of a hassle to enter and to score. So for next year, I propose THIS -

Hooray! The future is here!

BONUS - Better format for Summer Blockbuster preds? http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/59/puzzles-other-games/movie-box-office-game-draft-style-sign-up-thread-988215/

I agree with QB's format for next year's Oscars. There's not much skill in picking the overwhelming favorites and all the data is available to the public. I like how this format would require more strategy and risk-taking for some upsets.

Oh and I guess I still need to do a top 10 list? Well on facebook I ranked this year's 10 best pic nominees but I guess I can do a shorter one with my 10 favorites in general.

I count 18 for QB, including all categories since that's what his bet was for.
Ng's list seems to top out at about 15, so QB wins $5 from Ng in this bet.

QB how many points did I snag on the Google version? Pretty sure I was at least a couple points better there.

Of all the seven AAAs I've seen, this was by far the worse and it has been going downhill for a while now. The hosts were terrible and not funny at all. Kirk Douglas pretty much stole the show!

Congrats to QB!

Okay, could I PLEASE just give some short Oscar thoughts?  Will only take a minute.  I mean jeez!

Awards-wise, this wasn't exactly a thrilling show.  I thought King's Speech was fantastic and did favor it slightly over Social Network, but even so I'm not happy with Fincher getting robbed for Director.  And Burton winning for his "totally wacky" costumes again was pretty meh, but Art Direction as well?  Come on!  Also still haven't quite gotten over the Director and Editing snubs for Inception, weird stuff like TRON not being there for best Visuals, and I honestly wasn't that impressed with Leo in The Fighter and never quite understood how she cracked the Top Five.  None of these are major complaints and could easily have been forgiven if we'd have seen some entertaining upsets throughout the night, but they never really materialized.  Also I'm maybe a tiny bit biased by my picks being so terrible!

Presentation-wise, I've got to say the night was an ever bigger letdown.  The Inception-themed cold open was a clever idea (though they didn't do much with it) and I liked the Auto Tune The News tribute montage, but Anne and Franco didn't exactly tear the roof off the place in their live segments.  I guess they were hired to be hip and edgy and attract a younger audience?   ...and then they pretty much just got out on the stage and did nothing for three solid hours.  And this is coming from someone who's a big fan of them both!  (On a side note, I expected Anne to look stunning throughout the night as she usually does, but she only wowed me in one of the six outfits she wore (the gold dress)).

There were still a few standout moments here and there, though.  The presentation by Kirk Douglas was a rare spark of energy (though I thought it went on a little too long), Melissa Leo's speech was adorable, Bale and Firth were solid and classy, and I loved the huge-haired Live Action Short kid and the King's Speech screenplay writer.  Other good presenter stuff: Timberlake's Bansky admission, Jake G. ripping QB regarding those "impossible to predict" categories, and Jude Law poking fun at Downey Jr's hooker problems.

Final Grade: C-

Would like to see Jon Stewart return as host for 2011, or shake things up with Ricky Gervais.

EDIT - Oh yeah, and night's "*double take* whoa!" award goes to Jennifer Lawrence

Didn't see that coming after finishing Winter's Bone!

Others who looked great last night: Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry.  Surprisingly wasn't quite sold on Natalie, Scarlett, or Amy Adams.

I quite enjoyed the show, as usual with Sarah's family.  Though they are from Hollywood, and her Grandpa was a famous comedy writer back in the day, so we all get jazzed up for these things.

And now, what everybody was REALLY waiting for - the movies I saw this year and my grades

The Town - 10/10
Toy Story 3 - 10/10
The Kids are Alright - 9/10
Black Swan - 9/10
Shutter Island - 9/10
The Social Network - 7/10
Inception - 6/10
Shrek - 5/10
Valentines Day - 4/10
Date Night - 4/10
Harry Potter - 2/10
Get Him to the Greek - 1/10
Due Date - 0/10
Sex and the City - 0/10

Watched The King's Speech. Fairly surprised it won Best Picture, but Firth is easily deserving of the Best Actor award. His performance reminded me of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man in terms of someone fully capturing a very different character, to the point of being able to show varying emotions in an odd way. The film has a lot of quiet, understated moments that make it an interesting watch, as well.

Really surprised at octo's grades. Putting Town and TS3 as 10/10s make me think he prefers a simple film to enjoy, but then he ranks Shutter f Island a 9 and inexplicably snubs Inception to a 6 (I thought Inception was twice as good as Shutter Island in every way). Also, he must think every other HP movie is 0/10, as DH Part I is the best so far except for Azkaban. I don't expect that there's a full justification behind every /10, and I honestly wouldn't have commented if not for the SI 9/10. If octo wants to respond to this, maybe you could answer: If not King's Speech, what do you think should have won Best Picture, and why? (I think you would give KS like a 4/10 anyway)

I don't know about a 2, but I agree with him that it wasn't a good movie even by HP standards. 5 was much better imo.

I haven't read or watched any HP before that.  I almost fell asleep during the movie.  I saved it to a 2/10 instead of 0/10 only b/c everybody else was cheering and screaming, and when I left the movie there was a line of hundreds of people outside (I saw it at a prescreening at a banking event).

I rather enjoyed Shutter Island, and I felt Inception was trying too hard.  I'm all for unrealistic movies if they can explain why in a convincing way (The Matrix, etc.).  But Inception just seemed too far fetched for me.  Mainly how Ellen Paige's character went from being oblivious to giving advice/knowing everything about inception in a 2 hour span.

The Town - 10/10
Entertaining, good acting/story.  Not "best picture" type 10/10, but really loved watching it

Toy Story 3 - 10/10
Teared up at the end.  I love animated films that can make you feel something (Wall E for example)

The Kids are Alright - 9/10
Another fun and simple story, I felt involved and pulling for certain characters

Black Swan - 9/10
Very cool, great acting, dropped a point because of the abrupt ending

Shutter Island - 9/10
Kept me on my toes, and talking about it after.  I thought I had it figured out within 20 minutes, then spent the next 90 minutes doubting myself, and then after the last line you could interpret the movie either way.

The Social Network - 7/10
Less about the story itself, and more about how it was told.

Inception - 6/10
Trying too hard.  Well made, etc., but just didn't grab me like it did everybody else.

Shrek - 5/10
Fun but nothing spectacular

Valentines Day - 4/10
Predictable, rarely funny or engaging

Date Night - 4/10
Same as above

Harry Potter - 2/10
Never seen or read any HP

Get Him to the Greek - 1/10
Some funny moments... I guess?

Due Date - 0/10
Trains Planes and Automobiles ripoff with terrible writing and acting

Sex and the City - 0/10
I'll be the first to admit, I actually enjoyed Sex and the City TV series, but this was just atrocious

I'll comment on my Best Picture after I see Kings Speech and The Fighter.  Not really interested in watching any of the other candidates.

Of what I saw, I would have voted for Black Swan

Thanks for responding.
Yeah, SatC is passable, but from what I've seen the movies try way too hard and aren't funny.
Deathly Hallows is a rough place to jump in if you're not familiar with Harry Potter. If you haven't experienced this series already it might be too late.
Nice to see the effect TS3 had, I was emotionally engaged for most of that movie.
I thought Shutter Island was open to either interpretation until the final scene, heh. For me, the ending ruined a movie I thought was weird and pretty boring.

Ellen Page "suddenly knows a lot about inception" because that's all she's been doing/studying for however long they've been working on it ("2-hour period" represents much more time, of course). Recall that she has to know enough about the whole deal to create the dreams that they go into (her presenting the maze-like model at one point is the best indication of how complicated this is). The scene where she first begins "architecting" (where she breaks the glass window) is also an indication that she learns fast. Her character is very intelligent in general, and she spends some time navigating DiCaprio's dream, which ALSO indicates she's very interested in the whole deal.

Maybe a little line exchange like this would've been persuasive. Let's say Gordon-Levitt's character is talking with her:

Gordon-Levitt: Wow, you've gotten a lot better.
Page: This is literally all I've been doing, all day, every day, for the past week. I would hope I've gotten better.
Gordon-Levitt: Good point.

This or a simple "ONE WEEK LATER" on the bottom of the screen might have made things more obvious. I don't think that was needed, though, as the movie gave plenty of justification as to why she changed.

One does need to be pretty astute in tracking the events of the movie, so if you weren't drawn in then it's gonna be tough to enjoy it like other people did. Inception didn't win Best Picture, Directing, or any acting awards, and I'm not saying it's a cinematic masterpiece, but it's a very, very well-made film that unfortunately has to spend almost all its energy covering its own bases. I would compare it to The Matrix and say Inception is much more complicated.

"I got hurt, and there's blood in real life. You said the Matrix wasn't real." "Your mind makes it real."
vs.
"He got shot, and he's bleeding in a dream!" "That's okay, we'll kill him to wake him up." "No! Because he's heavily sedated, killing him will send him down into limbo!" "What's limbo?" "Limbo is empty dream space where you stay for an indeterminate amount of time." etc. etc.

7/10 for TSN is perfect. There were a lot of good things about this movie but it ends up average.
Haha, Black Swan having an abrupt ending makes sense, considering it's Aronofsky (most recently did The Wrestler). This movie looks pretty wild and I'm not sure I would enjoy it, but I definitely want to see it. My family disregarded this movie pretty quickly because of the sexual content, which annoys me because you can fast forward, and you could be missing out on a great film. One of my brothers is quick to forget about movies if they have adult content, which is very annoying.

Would love to hear other people's thoughts, seems like we spend more time predicting how movies will sell and what awards they'll win instead of saying what we liked and didn't like, and why.

Agreed on Inception, I get why she was learning, etc., it just didn't explain it well enough.  I liked The Matrix way more because they spend a very long time going over backstory.  But I guess the backstory really is the story...  Inception didn't have time to fully explain how it all works, just that it exists.  It's not that I didn't understand the movie or anything, just that it wasn't up my alley.  Tracking them through the levels of dreams, how time moves slower (or was it faster?), "limbo" etc wasn't really complicated, but I didn't find it that engaging either.  And the ending with the top spinning and not seeing if it falls or not was entirely predictable and a pretty lame cliffhanger ending to be honest.

Black Swan's sex scene is entirely imperative to the movie.  If you are going to fast forward it, at least acknowledge what happened.  Can't blame anybody for not watching to watch that scene, but it's not just a throwaway sex scene to attract viewers like most are
