March Madness w/ The Elite!
« on: March 12, 2006, 11:36:00 pm »
It's the moooost, wonderful time... of the yeeeear!

Yes sir, the greatest playoffs in all of sport are here again- it's college basketball's Big Dance!  But which of the 64 teams will come out on top?  Fill out a bracket, and let's find out together!

As always, we're running an Elite bracket competition at ESPN.com, and everyone's invited.  Just start here:

games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage

After you log in/sign up, pick an entry name (like "Ngamer's Superpicks!") and then click Create/Join a Group.  Do a search for

The March Madness Elite

Our pass, as always, is "elite."

It's going to be another great tourney, hope you choose to join in.  Go Duke!

Because we like our ball sports tournament to be more fast-paced than you European World Cuppers.

Plus, why not root for your university (or favorite) to win the championship?

Incidentally, Jon's indescribably incessant insistance induced my involvement.

My picks are almost totally random.  If I beat you and you didn't do the same thing, you should be ashamed.

Incidentally, ImNgamers's indescribably incessant insistance induced increased involvement.

Ok, I got my entry in. I don't really know much about many of the teams except San Diego State. I think they're better than their record shows. They played poorly throughout their conference tourney but I think they'll step it up against Indiana in the first round. As dominant as Gonzaga is, I've got SDSU over them in the second round. After that, who knows. Plus there's buzz that two of the juniors may go pro. Then again I came in dead last a year ago so I don't anticipate winning the car or whatever it is they're giving away.

Good luck to all!

To me, the next two days are the best days of the year, sports-wise.  16 games a day, and every one of them meaningful?  It just doesn't get any better than that.

As a for instance, a team me and several others have picked all the way to the Final Four was just taken into double overtime.  And that's just in the first game of the day!

Here's what BC/Pacific looked like in Chat:

To be fair, I can't recall ever doing that nor was I ever going to do something like that ngamer.  In fact I hadn't even intended to even let you or anyone else know who I picked unless they asked valuing my advice rather than comparing--you were the one badgering me about it.

I also don't think that is accurate with what I actually did but I don't care nor am I competing here so it doesn't matter.

Marquette just ran into a team with one guy making 8/11 3's.  Grrrr.  I'll bite that and the other games I lost.  I didn't care before this tourn started nor do I care now.  I only submitted brackets for the free 10k shot.  I only care when my integrity is being questioned which obviously you are doing.

I know you won't believe me so why do I even bother?

You can't leave the elite--because ngamer will hound you till the end of the earth to come back.

I peaked at 99.3% after the first round... our top Elite score was Bcks, who was 99.9% (ranked 3000th overall) for a little while between rounds.

Basically, it's time to root Duke, BC, and every single upset possible from here out.

Right, the PPR is the most important number. Unfortunately my PPR took a major hit when UNC lost yesterday. I still stand to do well if Duke and Villanova are in the championship game. If UConn continues to win, I'll be leapfrogged by quite a few people.

Basketball is pretty lame.  Unless you're playing.  And even then, I'm a short, white chick, which means I'm not best suited for basketball.  That didn't stop me in junior high from being one of the better JV players though.

Memories...

Anyway, basketball sucks.  I hate the month of March.  Except the 31st.  >.>

I didn't get to see the Duke game, but I was told that it was heinous. I'm still a little bitter about how poorly UNC played in their loss too. My NC connection has let me down this year. I'm always biased towards teams from my home state, and my bracket is paying for it. Unless Nova wins/makes the final game, my bracket is toast.

I got to see the end of the WVU/Texas and Zaga/UCLA games, and wow were they tight. I thought WVU had forced an OT, and that UCLA comeback was nothing short of incredible. I'm still stunned by it.

I was actually tied (with lots I'm sure) for 70th in the women's after the first day (29/32).  However, that has since changed considerably. ;p

Looks like Duke F'd a lot of people, our group is kind of sad in potential right now.

Watching UConn beat Washington at the end was painful. UConn should have lost that game in regulation. I knew it was over once it went to OT due to the foul troubles of Washington.

I don't like UConn, and I was hoping for a little upset since so many people have them winning it all. At least Nova survived...

Yes, the Washington Uconn game was worse than the Gonzaga loss. If Mike Jensen wouldn't have fouled that  guy for the extra point, that three at the end of regulation wouldn't have tied it. He was an asshole to me in highschool, so he deserves the blame.

Lol nice

At any rate, GO UCLA!  If they make it further than Florida, I'm the winner!  If both Florida and UCLA lose, Weisshaar wins (who the freak?), and if Florida makes it further than UCLA Woll is the Elitest Marcher.

Weisshaar is better known to the Elite as "Lanky."

I've got to say, this has to be the most unlikely Final Four in tournament history.  Of the 2.8 million brackets entered at ESPN, exactly three correctly predicted this Final Four.  Three!  And two of those were on "joke" or throwaway brackets, the 4th or 5th ones the guys threw together just for giggles.  This is nuts.  Additionally, not a single person nailed the entire Elite Eight, though quite a few managed 7/8, surprisingly.

Standings heading into the Final Four!

Interestingly, one more GMU win (and a UCLA loss) will mean that Woll ties for silver with the girl he once attempted to facebook.

EDIT - To put it in perspective, Woll only correctly predicted 3 of the Elite Eight, only one of his Final Four made the field, and one of his Finals picks got spanked in the opening round already, earning him 0 of a possible 31 points.  And he still blew the rest of us right out of the water.  What a crazy year!

The saddest part about this year, is that we all get pwned by the shittiest brackets..  Yet then to have even less points means ours are even shittier.  Not many people on the leaderboard even had good brackets, unless you consider randomly picking GMU "good" (read the writeup on winner, he meant to have george WASHINGTON as his cinderella, did it wrong and just said eh what the hell, I'll keep it) and missing half of the round 2 games, but getting lucky that the rest of the wild/random picks make the elite 8 "good."  With 3,000,000 brackets, SOMEBODY is going to get lucky, eh?

w00t at having like nothing right in the last 4 rounds and getting in the 80%ile

round 1:  10 points
round 2:  20 points
sweet 16: 40 points
elite 8: 80 points
final 4: 120 points
final: 240 points

Am I right or am I right?

EV round 1:  1/2 * 32 games * 10 points = 160
EV round 2:  1/4 * 16 games * 20 points = 80
EV round 3:  1/8 * 8 games * 40 points = 40
EV round 4:  1/16 * 4 games * 80 points = 20
EV round 5:  1/32 * 2 games * 120 points = 7.5
EV round 6:  1/64 * 1 game * 240 points = 3.75

total:  311.25 points for PURE randomness.

Oh damn, thats just one game below the bottom of our list, oh well.  I was hoping I'd find somebody who did worse than that.

I'd restrict half the field from winning later games if it weren't for GMU, screws that idea.
