2014 Summer Movie Discussion! (also writeups)
« on: May 14, 2014, 06:44:41 am »
The current temperature may not agree, but when it comes to movies at least the Summer of 2014 is now officially UNDERWAY!  As I'm sure you know by now, Summer Movie Previews/Discussion has become something of a tradition with the Elite; here are the links if you'd like to take a look back:

The Summer of 2007 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=1418
* An incredible May lineup of Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3, and Pirates 3 kicked off what became the #1 Summer of all-time at the box office (though it wouldn't have gotten there without strong returns from Ratatouille, Harry Potter 5, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Simpson Movie, plus the surprising successes of Transformers, Knocked Up, and Superbad).

The Summer of 2008 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=13628
* While not a record breaking season, '08 DID feature one of the most incredible runs in box office history by The Dark Knight, along with some very respectable showings by Iron Man, Indy 4, Hancock, Get Smart, and Wall*E.

The Summer of 2009 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=14599
* Transformers 2, Harry Potter 6, and Up delivered the goods, and we were blindsided by the success of Star Trek and The Hangover, but weaker than expected returns from pretty much the whole rest of the slate resulted in a somewhat disappointing season at the box office.

The Summer of 2010 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=15297
* Toy Story 3, Inception, Twilight 2, and Iron Man 2 got the job done, and Karate Kid/Despicable Me turned into surprise hits, but nearly everything else embarrassed itself (Shrek 4, Prince of Persia, The A-Team).  The result was consecutive disappointing Summer seasons.

The Summer of 2011 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=15779
* Harry Potter 8 was huge, Bridesmaids and Rise of the Planet of the Apes were unexpectedly major hits, and most of the other big releases performed reasonably well (Thor, Captain America, Transformers 3, Hangover 2), making 2011 one of the biggest Summers ever.  The only especially notable bombs were The Green Lantern and Conan the Barbarian.

The Summer of 2012 - http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=17011
* Dark Knight Rises, Amazing Spiderman, and Brave put up blockbuster numbers as we had expected, and there were some pleasant surprises like Ted and Magic Mike coming out of nowhere to make a ton of money.  Battleship was the only real bomb... but the story of the season was obviously The Avengers destroying the opening weekend record and racking up the 3rd largest box office total in history.  In the end my prediction was correct- it was the highest grossing Summer season we've seen and helped make 2012 overall the biggest year for movies in history!  (With a notable assist from an incredible holiday season where Hunger Games/Skyfall/Hobbit/Twilight and the Oscar films all did amazingly well.)

The Summer of 2013 - http://forums.the-elite.net/forum/index.php?topic=18876
Well, I got it half right.  I predicted the '13 Summer season would start out hot before tailing off and coming up a little short of record numbers, and that's just what happened: Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 3, Man of Steel, Monsters U, Fast 6, Star Trek Into Darkness, and World War Z were huge hits (all grossed over $200 million), but a few flops like After Earth, The Internship, and The Lone Ranger held the season back.  However I went on to guess that a somewhat weaker than usual Holiday slate would likewise hold the full year to below-record numbers... whoops!  Turns out the box office exploded from October on to earn a full $11 billion for the year, smashing the old record.   You've got Catching Fire/Gravity/Desolation of Smaug/Lone Survivor to thank for that, though of course the real #1 story was Frozen coming out of nowhere to make $400 million!

This will be our Summer-long topic to talk about the new movies we see!

2014 Summer Movies

NOTE: for these writeups, anything after a $ is in millions of dollars and is the USA-only total gross for that film unless I say otherwise.

May 2nd (Week #1)
The Amazing Spiderman 2

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1872181
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
Spiderman faces his Greatest Battle Ever, assuming you don't count any of his battles from prior to two years ago.  Electro, yet another new Green Goblin, some guy inside a robot, etc etc you get the picture.

Why Will It Be Big?
Despite everyone agreeing it was waaaay too soon to reboot the series, 2012's Spidey flick actually did very good business at $262 million, only slightly down from the original trilogy.  Unfortunately everyone seemed to agree the movie was pretty underwhelming so it would be surprising if the sequel was able to match those numbers.

Why Should I See It?
Well, Emma Stone is a goddess, Andrew Garfield is pretty enjoyable in the lead role, and the two have great chemistry onscreen (they fell in love on the set of the reboot and have been dating for the last two years).  Beyond that though I couldn't find much to recommend about the 2012 movie; the fight scenes were underwhelming, the CGI was borderline embarrassing in places and the villain was a disaster.  From the trailer the new movie seems like it might have improved in some of those areas but ehhh, still doesn't strike me as a must-see!

May 9th (Week #2)
Neighbors

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2004420/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
New parents Seth Rogen and Rose Bryne have the perfect suburban life... until a noisy frat lead by Zac Efron and Dave Franco moves in across the street!  Much beer-fueled pranking ensues.

Why Will It Be Big?
Rogen is coming in HOT off the surprisingly successful (given how completely absurd it was) This is the End (earned over $100 million).  Effron's a bit of a different story after his promising rom-com That Awkward Moment bombed ($26 million) just a few months back.  Neighbors should easily improve on that performance, but usually studios position R rated comedies for August, and for good reason.  It seems likely that Neighbors will quickly get lost in the shuffle of the busy start of the movie season, so it's hard to see this one breaking out.

Why Should I See It?
I was very skeptical of the premise but I've got to admit, the trailer did win me over somewhat with a couple okay laughs.  Also it looks like they made an effort to fill the minor supporting roles with some of my favorite lesser known comedians, so I'll go ahead and upgrade this to a respectable "might see."

May 16th (Week #3)
Godzilla

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831387/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
All those explosions on small islands throughout the Pacific Ocean in the 50s and 60s?  They weren't nuclear tests... no, our atomic weapons awoke something that threatened to wipe us off the face of the Earth.  Now its finally returned to finish the job.

Why Will It Be Big?
How do you make audiences forget the complete disgrace that was 1998's Godzilla ($136)?  You start by casting the most well respected, award winning actor of the past five years (Bryan Cranston) and then you pivot by turning a campy creature feature into a CGI-extravaganza disaster film.  Everyone loves those!  Think Independence Day ($306) or War of the Worlds ($234) or heck, even The Day After Tomorrow which pulled down $187 despite being nearly unwatchable.  This thing is going to be BIG.

Why Should I See It?
Because it looks awesome.  So smart to focus on the human aspect (with the nervous soldiers and families torn apart) and the conspiracy theories and Cranston's unmistakable voice while mostly limiting the big man himself to the sidelines in the trailers.  Between this and last year's Pacific Rim and next year's Jurassic World it looks like giant monsters are here to stay, and I for one couldn't be happier!  The Verdict: Muuuuuust Watch.

May 23rd (Week #4)
X-Men: Days of Future Past

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1877832/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
Oh boy, we're going to be here for a while.  Soooooo, remember 2013's The Wolverine and 2011's First Class and 2006's The Last Stand?  Well this is a sequel to ALL OF THEM AT ONCE.  See Wolvy returned from his adventure in Japan to find the giant robots called Sentinels were killing mutants, but then they went crazy and killed all humans as well.  Now the only way to stop them is to combine the powers of the "new class" from the 2006 film with the powers of the "old class" from the 2011 film (which was set in 1962) by somehow time traveling a bunch to form the ultimate mutant supersquad.  Got it?

Why Will It Be Big?
This is such a smart move.  X-Men has been falling off ever since making $234 back in 2006, but despite not blowing up the box office Wolverine ($133) was okayish and First Class ($146) was secretly the best movie in the series.  Now they get to combine the actors everyone loves (Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart) with the 1962 cast that did such a good job (Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as Magneto and Xavier, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique) plus throw in some of the '06 youngsters like Ellen Page.  They're creating a huge crossover event that anyone who's seen any of the previous half-dozen movies in the series will want to check out- or in other words following "the Avengers formula" to the T!  Obviously it's not going to work out for FOX quite as well as it has for Disney, but even so it wouldn't shock me a bit if this ended up the most successful X-Men ever.

Why Should I See It?
I thought the franchise went off the rails a little bit with the over-the-top final hour of The Last Stand and Origins: Wolverine certainly didn't win me back over, but you know what, First Class and its focus on the Cold War era and Cuban Missile Crisis was actually really good.  In fact it might even crack the list as one of my top five superhero movies, and that's really saying something since I've seen all 1000 that have come out since 2000!  So I'm more than willing to go along with the insane premise and mark this one down as a must-see.

May 30th (Week #5)
Maleficent

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587310/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
Everyone knows the story of Sleeping Beauty, but now it's time to finally hear the OTHER side of the story.  Perhaps this fairy godmother wasn't all that wicked after all?  Uhhhhh sure.

Why Will It Be Big?
Apparently Hollywood made a deal in 2008 where from then on teenage boys would get 5 superhero action movies every year and teen girls would get a mix of young adult love triangles (Twilight, Hunger Games, their 100 unsuccessful imitators) and live action fairy tales.  Some of them have worked, like Alice in Wonderland ($334) and the kind-of-okay Snow White and the Huntsman ($155), but I'm not entirely confident Maleficent is going to be on the same level.

Why Should I See It?
It's the role Angelina Jolie was born to play, at least in terms of pure physical resemblance, and heck they made this work for Wicked, right?  I don't know though, Wicked was backed by great music whereas I still have no idea what Maleficent is actually trying to BE outside of a really flashy really expensive experience that, with its PG rating, looks too frightening for the young audience it would normally appeal to.  Guess we'll have to wait and see how the reviews come out on this one.

A Million Ways to Die in the West
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2557490/?ref_=cs_ov_tt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXxqG4aqwY4

I've always been super critical of Family Guy mastermind Seth McFarlane and Ted didn't do much to change my mind, but even so I've got to admit this trailer has some decent laughs.  Still love the old time photo booth gag even after seeing it a dozen times!  And it looks like Liam Neeson could have fun in his role so ehhhh, could be worth checking out after all.

June 6th (Week #6)
Edge of Tomorrow

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1631867/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
There's an alien invasion and humanity is mounting what appears to be a suicidal last stand.  We've certainly seen that before, but this time it's Groundhog Day meets Halo when Tom Cruise is forced to keep reliving the final day of his life hundreds of times in a row!  Will his infinite lives cheat code be enough to win the war?

Why Will It Be Big?
Tom Cruise used to be the most bankable star in the world, but shockingly outside of Mission Impossible he hasn't managed to crack $100 million at the box office since 2005!  Edge of Tomorrow looks to be a bit more ambitious than his sci-fi effort from last year, Oblivion ($89) and this pretty cool trailer and the addition of the lovely Emily Blunt should help, so snapping his under-100 streak seems like a safe bet.  Even so I'm not sold on this turning into a true breakout hit.

Why Should I See It?
I'm so down for Emily Blunt, action hero, and Groundhog Day + alien invasion strikes me as a match made in heaven.  Certainly this looks like an improvement on Source Code, a movie I quite enjoyed a few years back, so yeah, sign me up!  The one downside:  Edge of Tomorrow is apparently based off a Japanese manga named, get this, "All You Need Is Kill."  What a perfect title, can't believe they botched it so badly!

June 13th (Week #7)
How to Train Your Dragon 2

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1646971/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
After the events of the first movie dragons and Vikings are good pals and all is right in the world... until an evil uhhhh, other kind of Viking army arrives with plans to destroy both humans and dragons alike.

Why Will It Be Big?
The original movie came out of nowhere in 2010 to become the highest-grossing computer animation movie ever, outside of Pixar and the Shrek series ($218).  An impressive feat in itself, but also it was actually really good and drew rave reviews from both critics and the kiddies, who presumably have been watching it in droves on DVD ever since.  With all that audience growth an improvement on the first movie's performance seems like the safest bet of the season, especially considering how well other hyped non-Pixar family films have been doing recently.  (Frozen improved on Tangle's gross by $200 million and even Despicable Me 2 did $100 mil better than the original.)

Why Should I See It?
Pixar's taking the year off to prepare for the two new original films they'll release in 2015, and you've got to see one family movie this year, right?  Even if Dragon 2 doesn't quite match the charm of the original I've still got so much faith in this franchise that I'll name it a firm must-see!

ALSO
22 Jump Street
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2294449/?ref_=cs_ov_tt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP755JkDxyM

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's 2012 buddy cop revival 21 Jump Street was not only a big hit ($138), it was also very unexpectedly not awful!  This time the 30 year olds stop pretending to be high school seniors in favor of pretending to be college students; slightly more reasonable and should certainly lead to some wiiiiiild adventures.  Might be worth a look.

June 20th (Week #8)
Think Like a Man Too

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2239832/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
The beloved couples from 2012's Think Like a Man have reunited, and this time it's off to Vegas for some reason!

Why Will It Be Big?
I could have sworn the 2012 film was gone from theaters after only a couple weeks, but apparently that wasn't true in other areas as it made a very solid $92 million.  And there's no denying that Kevin Hart is on a hot streak coming off the very successful Ride Along ($134).  Even so this REALLY doesn't seem like the kind of film that should try to compete with all these Summer blockbusters- should probably have been pushed out in April like the last one or at least the back end of August.  I'm sure this won't bomb outright but $100 mil seems like a tough goal given the circumstances.

Why Should I See It?
You've got to watch at least one of the "wacky adventures in Las Vegas" movies that have been coming out every month since The Hangover, and this might be your only chance to do so in June!
---

June 27th (Week #9)
Transformers: Age of Extinction

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2109248/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
It's been five years since the fateful events of Transformers 3, or maybe 10 years, WHO KNOWS.  In any case the Decepticons have left and everything's peaceful and the Transformers have all gone to rust.  Then all of a sudden OMG that peace is straight up shattered by uhhhhh something or other and eventually we get back to explosions!  Flying robots!  Loud noises!

Why Will It Be Big?
As much as everyone seems to agree on the last two movies being disasters, they're still apparently exactly the kind of thing North American audiences are dying to see every July ($402 and $352 million, both improvements on the original).  Normally I'd expect audience fatigue to have set in by this point in an action franchise, but it's actually been over 3 years since Dark of the Moon so maybe we as a species are ready to watch gigantic robots crash into each other once again.  I'm thinking interest will be down somewhat, but still not enough to keep this from being one of the top grossers of the year.

Why Should I See It?
Well, Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox have been kicked to the curb and replaced with Mark Wahlberg, which in itself is a substantial upgrade in my opinion.  Also, DINOSAUR ROBOTS on a 50 foot screen!  If only 8 year old Ngamer could have lived to see this day!
---

July 4th (Week #10)
Earth to Echo

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2183034/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
A bunch of 14 year old's phones start acting up and UH OH it's a baby alien, they'll have to help it phone home to save it from the evil government.

Why Will It Be Big?
A few years back Super 8 was supposed to be the next generation's E.T. and although it did okay ($127), that dream didn't exactly pan out.  Oh well, let's just take another crack at it!  This time around it'll be a little different as Echo appears to be targeting a younger audience and using the kind-of successful "found footage" genre by making the kids record all this drama on their phones.  Overall I can't see this lighting the world on fire by any stretch, though it might do well on Netflix or DVD down the road.

Why Should I See It?
Perhaps there is still a 14 year old boy inside all of our basements.  If so someone should call the police immediately.

ALSO
Tammy
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2103254/?ref_=cs_ov_tt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8rdSExn2xw

Melissa McCarthy is coming in HOT AS A PISTOL off three major hits in a row (Bridesmaids at $169 and The Heat at $160 and Identity Thief at $135), but I can't possibly imagine she can turn this one into a four-peat.  Now a McCarthy/Susan Sarandon road trip sounds like a comedy with some promise, but from how long this trailer focuses on that awkward fast foot holdup the road trip doesn't seem to be what the movie is going to focus on.  Ah well, I'm sure she'll be in three better comedies in the next year we could watch instead.

July 11th (Week #11)
NOTHING

This was supposed to be the release date for The Fast and the Furious 7, but Paul Walker's death in November left Vin Diesel and the gang scrambling to rewrite and reshoot scenes all over the place to explain his absence.  As a result they've had to push back the release all the way to April 2015.  But how will I survive an entire Summer Blockbuster season without The Rock!, I hear you screaming.  Hang in there brave moviegoer, hope is on the horizon!
---

July 18th (Week #12)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2103281/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
10 years after a series of blunders resulted in furious, super intelligent apes destroying San Francisco there are only a few villages of human survivors left in North America.  Because also there was a huge plague for some reason that killed millions of humans but didn't bother the apes, I guess?  In any case the fate of the world hangs in the balance as the remaining humans are now on the brink of war with the apes (still lead by the first super-ape Caesar from the last movie), and whoever wins will be the one to repopulate the Earth.

Why Will It Be Big?
Everyone expected the worst of Rise of the Planet of the Apes three years ago, but it actually did quite well both critically and commercially ($177 million).  FOX appears to be expecting Dawn to bank in on that goodwill in a big way, as they're already making plans to turn this into a full on Apes Trilogy a couple years from now.  Not a bad idea IMO- I like the trailer enough to think this could easily end up being one of the biggest hits of the Summer yet again!

Why Should I See It?
James Franco has been forcefully yanked off stage, replaced with Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, and just like Transformers I've got to consider that a pleasant upgrade.  Beyond that we still don't know much about this storyline, but that's fine by me since after the enjoyable last movie I'm already sold.  Bring on the apes, must-see territory here we come!
---

July 25th (Week #13)
Hercules

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1267297/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
After completing his legendary Twelve Labors, young Hercules has his faith in himself tested after being captured and thrown in a dungeon by a tyrannical warlord looking to overthrow his homeland.  Luckily by the end of the trailer he remembers "wait a minute, I'm LITERALLY The Rock" and is back to bashing in heads in the name of justice!

Why Will It Be Big?
Rocky's recent reputation is the shot in the arm worn out action franchises need; he's pushed the Fast and Furious series to new heights since coming on board and even made a respectable hit out of GI Joe: Retaliation ($123) last year.  Unfortunately his original solo outings have had a more shaky history, most notably the semi-flops that were last year's Snitch ($43) and Pain and Gain ($50).  Hercules seems like a step in the right direction though, a real return to form that makes me think audiences might flock to see this one just like they did The Scorpion King way back in the day.  Doubt it hits anything like true blockbuster status, but Hercules could still be one of the bigger hits of the season.

Why Should I See It?
You really think there's a chance you could wait until APRIL to feed your addiction to The Rock?  Not bloody likely!

Jupiter Ascending

What in the world?  Okay so the evil Queen in some crazy fantasy/future world tries to kill Mila Kunis, and whoops what a mistake because now Mila will have team up with Channing Tatum and Sean Bean to overthrow the whole system!   It looks totally insane and I'll absolutely be there on opening night, but still... how the heck do the Wachowskis still find people to give them $200 million to make these insane films?  I mean yes the Matrix movies and V For Vendetta did well for themselves, but that was nine years ago and since then Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas were two of the biggest box office bombs* we've seen in the last decade- it's unbelievable!  (*Even though both movies were actually quite good.)

August 1st (Week #14)
Guardians of the Galaxy

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2015381/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
You've heard of The Avengers?  Well, meet Marvel's OTHER squad of superheros, the Guardians of the Galaxy!  They're a disgraced human pilot (Chris Pratt), a sexy green alien (Zoe Saldana), some kind of hulked out monster (Bautista), a walking tree (Vin Diesel), and literally a talking raccoon (Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper).  Jeez!  They uh, will have some kind of space adventure.

Why Will It Be Big?
The Avengers has been like a wave, lifting the fortunes of all things Marvel: Captain America for instance went from $177 in his first outing to probably around $265 when it's all said and done for his sequel that came out last month.  That's cool and all, but it's not like Tony Stark or the Hulk are going to be arriving to save the day at the end of this movie- it's still related to the upcoming Avengers sequel, but not in an obvious way that's going to send a million fans sprinting to the theaters.  There's only so much you can expect from a group of heros your general moviegoer has never heard of before, and trying to mix action heroics with such a weird/hilarious cast and storyline might be a hard sell also.  Would be sweet to see this movie break out, but doesn't seem too likely!

Why Should I See It?
Uhhh did you not read that "what is it" paragraph?!  As if seeing everyone's second favorite Parks & Recreation character become a pratfalling action star wasn't enough you've got to get a chuckle out of poor Zoe getting typecast as the "weird-colored alien girl" yet again (inbetween being Uhura on Star Trek she was Neytiri in Avatar).  And we haven't even gotten to what looks to be very funny scene-chewing roles out of John C. Reilly and Benicio Del Toro.  In other words I have no idea what's going to actually happen in this film but I don't care, I already couldn't love it anymore if I tried.  Must See with a capital MS!

ALSO
50 Shades of Grey
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2322441/?ref_=cs_ov_tt
Watch The Trailer: NO

What an awful, awful decision.  I mean the movie was clearly going to be happen, the terrible book was too popular for it not to, but whoever made that decision clearly had no idea what made 50 Shades such a big seller in the first place.  Millions of women read it because of the invention of the Kindle and Nook and audiobooks you can discreetly listen to on your iPod or smartphone.  This should have been turned into a short miniseries on Netflix where those same women could have made it the ultimate guilty pleasure watch from the comfort of their own couches (....and where of course it could also have gone unrated).  As is, expect this to bomb badly!

August 8th (Week #15)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1291150/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
OH NO the evil Shredder is back!  The world holds its collective breath to find out if these turtle boys will cut him any slack.

Why Will It Be Big?
90's kids worldwide have been out for blood ever since Michael Bay announced he'd be making this movie a couple years ago, shouting about it ruining their childhoods and how it was way too soon to reboot the franchise.  But actually it's been over 21 years since the last TMNT movie was in theaters, so in light of Transformers and GI Joe and the rest of the recent late-80s nostalgia grabs, it's not really THAT soon to bring the Turtles back.  The bad news is that despite a strong start ($135 million, which was like a billion since those were 1990 dollars) the 90s trilogy crashed hard afterward, with TMNT 3 actually being one of the biggest bombs of 1993 ($42).  Can Bay and company win over enough now-20 and 30 somethings to make this the next Transformers?  I'm putting all my money on... no!

Why Should I See It?
Alright so Megan Fox is a weird choice for April O'Neil, but having Will Arnett as her funny sidekick of a camera man should help.  And ummmm, at least Bay listened to the huge internet backlash and gave up on his original plan to turn the Turtles into aliens from another planet.  Yeah after watching the trailer guess I can't think of much else positive to say about this one.

August 15th (Week #16)
The Expendables 3

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2333784/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
Did you watch the last two times Sly Stallone gathered together all his 50 and 60-something former action star friends and think to yourself "shoot, if only this movie also had Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford"?  If so then boy do I have good news for you!

Why Will It Be Big?
It couldn't, it just couldn't possibly!  The original was at least somewhat impressive in taking such a gimmicky premise and actually drawing some decent crowds (finished with $103 million), but people were already mostly sick of the idea by the time the sequel arrived (down to $85), and now it needs to be a trilogy?  Shesh.

Why Should I See It?
Because they're showing it on the airplane five years from now and you're too uncomfortable in your coach seat to sleep through it.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Read About It: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458481/
Watch The Trailer:
What The Heck Is It?
It took 9 years, but finally Sin City is back!  This sequel will feature 3 new stories from the mind of creator Frank Miller, at least one of which is a prequel to some of the events from the last film, meaning they get to bring back all the fan favorites in Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis but also bring in new leads Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eva Green.

Why Will It Be Big?
I'm not entirely convinced it will be, sadly.  Sin City had a decent but not overwhelming run at the box office back in 2005, finishing with $74 million, but its audience exploded on DVD and the series seemed primed for a huge performance once the sequel dropped in 2008 or so.  But... it never happened, then for one reason or another the movie kept getting pushed back year after year.  By this point I'd have to imagine that audience interest has cooled to the point where I'm not even positive it can outgross the original.

Why Should I See It?
This teaser trailer doesn't give us a ton to go on, but heck, Sin City was one of my favorite theater experiences of the past decade; of course I'll be there again on opening night.  100% must see, and let's not wait 10 years to complete the trilogy this time!

Okay that covers everything, feel free to comment on everything as you see it throughout this season and happy moviegoing!

In the past we've taken guesses at what would end up the Top Five movies of the Summer- this year I wasn't able to finish my writeups in time for that to be a very good idea but if anyone would still like to try in a JUST FOR FUN capacity they can go ahead.

Personally my overall prediction is that we're going to end up with a stronger than usual May and August, but they'll bookend maybe the weakest June and Julys of the past five years.  And I'd have said that even BEFORE Fast 7 got removed from the schedule, which is kind of scary!  That should result in a below average Summer season and even though the Holiday season should be a good one, it won't be enough to keep 2014 from being down versus the past few years.

As for a specific Top Five I don't know, such an odd Summer... guess I'll go with

1. How to Train Your Dragon 2
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past
3. Godzilla
4. Transformers: Age of Extinction
5. Amazing Spiderman 2

GODZILLA is GOAT.  Best movie since Transformers in 2007.

Kinda intense to predict.  All of Spidey 2, Godzilla and X-Men took in $91M, 93M and 90M respectively.  This summer will be CLOSE.

Goose **OFFICIAL** 2014 Domestic Box Office Prediction

1. How to Train Your Dragon 2 - $400M

At this rate, with nothing sticking out, this seems like a safe #1.  Frozen was HUUUUUUGE.  Animated movies are huge.  Dragon 1 was really well received so all results point to this being the winner.

2. Transformers 4: Age of Extinction - $350M

With nothing else showing up big yet, I will risk this going to #2.  Mark Wahlberg has been largely bankable of late, and well acclaimed.  That acclaim might be what Transformers needs to give them another big haul, after a kinda troll (but still amazing) 2nd movie, and only a few tiers above "just plain great" 3rd movie.

3. GODZILLA - $300M

Amazing film.  I don't know why people hate it.  We'll let the box office do the talking.

4. Spiderman 2 - $275M

I refuse to call this "amazing."  This seems right because people don't seem to be loving X-Men.

5. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $260M

Again pretty troll and weak.  Seems like the worst received of these three so 5th makes sense.

Dark horse picks are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and A Million Ways to Die in the West.  The Fault in Our Stars could be huge too since every teen girl in the world will see it 5 times, but the $250-300M range seems needed for top 5 and that seems like a bit of a stretch.

Also saw the million dollar arm.

Please make sure to remind me which animated movie(s) to see this summer when it is time.
