Thanks for the nice list of suggestions. If you manage to get back into your account you can certainly post these as issues yourself. If you don't feel like it, I can do that for you.

I'd like to make an issue for the "Streaker" achievement; EITHER making it say "Obtain the world record on each normal mode difficulty on a stage", OR taking it away from those who have it because of The Duel.

I'd also like to take away the yellow bars on times pages for those who have the Duel sweep. And also take away the 0 points value next to a duel time, and just make it blank.

A lot of this discussion lost traction and was delaying the removal of points from Duel.  At the time I specifically requested that we move quickly on the action of "Keep it on the ranks but strip it of points" which was then pushed through quickly.  So far there hasn't been much follow-up on the related issues.

The primary reason for delay was some concern about the clarity of the mandate from the Elite Council because they voted yes but only to a very specific thing.  There's a certain uncomfortableness about implementing changes that go too far when only a very simple change was asked for.

See #77, it links to almost every other issue on GitLab about this Duel removal process.

Either Total time RTAs need to be input into the Game time category, or we should remove the Game time category altogether.

We started this process with c1ebae49489 in 2014, introducing Real Time to GE and putting them above Game Time. There was some discussion at the time about whether or not Game Time should be kept on the page (mostly starting here). Many loud voices said Game Time was irrelevant and should be removed, but Wouter's work left it included and no one has gone back to argue for it to be removed since. Later, some tweaks to the language describing Game Time were made.

We could file it as an issue, but it's probably something that should go to a Council Vote and/or dedicated community discussion first, rather than a "technical change" only?

Also a BIG thing (not sure who else would agree): If a player has both an alias name and a Real name (one for each game), whichever game they post a PR for needs to have it posted with their corresponding name. Currently it always defaults to the alias name.

Indeed, this one is related to the recently filed #83 - Allow both real name and alias for links. It seems like a great change.

Alec already brought up the Streaker-achievement issue, but here's another suggestion (pasted from the PD forums):

Duel should not be given points on LTK Rankings

Duel is not given points on the Normal Mode Rankings so why should Duel-times be worth points on LTK? To make it consistent, having a PD (D)LTK Rankings with 4000 points instead of 4200 is the way to go. Currently, having 4200 points on one rankings and 6000 points on the other makes the entire rankings page look flawed and inconsistent.

Yeah Axel, the more you look, the more Duel inconsistencies you'll find lmao

IMO we should bring this issue up again and just finish the job. I've already implemented most of the Duel removal features but we need to double check exactly what needs to be done again (e.g remove or don't remove Duel from time rankings, achievs, WRs count, LTK/DLTK, etc etc).

Again, it's all written here: https://gitlab.com/the-elite-net/rankings/issues/77

according to flicker, because LTK is a side league it doesnt matter. logical consistency doesnt seem to be a strong consideration for him i guess and I know flicker was against the removal of duel points for normal mode throughout the entire process.

i dont know how attached he is to it really so hopefully he can post here about it. also im sure the council could vote on whatever though and i definitely support duel being made as irrel as possible

I dunno, DLTK 0:09 is pretty hard! :nesquik:

There should definitely be consistency in my opinion.

server reboot/maintenance sometime soonish.  In the range of 5 to 30 minutes of downtime for everything with a the-elite.net URL.

All done. Took about 15 minutes. Hope you enjoyed the downtime with no pressure to post all the new records.

Wouter already doing work in 2018!!!

He's added comment icons on the time history page.  If you hover them, you can read the comment.

https://rankings.the-elite.net/history

Thanks Wouter.

You can also now hover comments on the mainpage feed but only for regular times, not SSR/LTK.

I think hovering over the icon is great and makes the page look more organised. If you get ridic long comments it could end up making the feed look janky, in my opinion.

With some good styling, keeping the comment hover-text within a restrained box it could turn out nice.

The Related Links are incredibly outdated, with six of the nine links being dead or redirects. Both links to the WR DB can be replaced by http://rarewrs.free.fr/. Links to the LTK/DLTK Division are dead and can be removed. Link to the Turbo division is dead as well, appearantly it was removed from the site after not having any updates for 5+ years.
Links that could be added in their place: The Elite twitch team and Discord for obvious reasons, speedrun.com for speedrunning in general.

Done.

Dang.

I guess just make a good suggestion for a rule here and see if someone else thinks it's a good idea and we'll put it in place.  Maybe something like automatic warning points and/or deletion?

Just type a dot, make the font size 2px or so and post along with your quote. Alternatively, toss a "mate" into the post.

For one year I have been handling the bulk of new player applications and it has become extremely obvious to me that, for whatever reason, a large percentage of the time emails are not automatically sent to the new player once their application is accepted. This happens with any/all types of email addresses. On numerous occasions I have had to manually set a new players password and relay it to them in a private message.

Besides completely fixing this problem by having the emails send every time, here are some fix suggestions:

- Add a notice to player applications, either directly on the application page or make it seen after submitting an application. The notice would say "If you have not received an email regarding your new account within 48 hours, please contact a staff member on The-Elite Forums or Discord." Linking to the Staff page on the rankings.

- Have players be able to enter their own password instead of being sent an email with a temporary password. This would allow players to attempt to log into their account, and either log in successfully or receive an error message that reads "Sorry, your account has not yet been accepted."

Maybe the emails just need to be moved over to being batch sent via a CRON job - apparently it's more reliable.

Being able to cut out the 'message a moderator' part and auto-accept all applications after 12-24hours would be fab: iirc though, the user color/initials need to be manually set?

Players setting their own password should be standard at this point.

Also, while outside your role requirements: if a batch of players are going to be accepted, sending a quick email (have a template made, bcc to every accepted rankings email address) via your own email account would be a good temp solution to pickup on these cases early. Would take a minute or two assuming you're at your desktop.

What with the Andrew Kentspiracy and other old players getting removed from the rankings, is there a way to save their times but not include them on the ranks? (via profile page, like GoldenEye rank: 53rd (removed)) also - if their unproved times could stay as is but just given 0 points.

Rough ideas but I believe it's important to preserve older records from a time when proof wasn't as important without giving a disadvantage to chart climbers. Apologies for any confusion caused by this wording.

Done.

But I have no idea who you are and your account here was created just minutes ago.

I added you just as a Guest for now, it probably won't show you the code but you can hopefully at least see and comment on issues.

If you could just maybe share something like how you came to the site or what your plans are to give me some confidence in updating your account on GitLab, that would be great.

The project is private as the site owner also owns the code and has not chosen to release it as open source or with any type of permissive license.  So your leash is basically at the length of "do stuff with this yourself and submit improvements, but you can't just go off and host your own copy someplace." Hope that makes sense.

Can we make it so that when players join it shows the dates of the times they joined with? Atm it says ‘unknown’ for the initial times.

Technically it's unknown because they probably didn't achieve the PRs on that day, though. And if they noted down when each PR was achieved they could edit each time and put the date accordingly. Not saying we should or shouldn't put default times on joined PRs, but doesn't look that simple, Karl.

This happens with any/all types of email addresses. On numerous occasions I have had to manually set a new players password and relay it to them in a private message.

This post was really well done and thanks for the report.  Model for success.

To everyone else here:

We've had some discussion on the linked issue thread.

Basically, some email providers are sending our messages to spam, or even just totally rejecting them.  We're sending, but the other side isn't playing ball.  This is very common when you aren't Google or some other big email provider.  Sometimes sites just block all emails from random addresses for no real reason.

For right now I'm going to just try to survey as many email providers as possible to check on our deliverability status.  I already found at least one provider that was rejecting our emails for no real reason and got them to start accepting them.

We would ALSO like to not be sent to the spam folder.

If things don't improve from this effort, we have some other mitigation strategies available such as sending from an email provider, which can be done for free or for a small fee.  We'll just see how it goes.

If anyone wants to volunteer any email addresses they have from a variety of email service providers, send me the address(es) via PM (or publicly if you don't care) and I will generate an email to you from @the-elite.net.  You can check your box, see if it went to spam. If it went to spam, mark "Not Spam" and then also reply to it to help that provider know that we don't send any spam from our domain.

If 20 people from Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc. all send me email addresses, click Not Spam, and reply to the message, that will be a huge help.  And if you use any other email provider that will ALSO be a big help.

And if I tell you I sent you a mail and you don't get it, we can work directly with your provider to make sure future emails are delivered.

Note that this is UNRELATED to any discussion of running a mailing list and any future work on that will be separate. This will be for a single email.

I also just noticed you aren't on the forwarding list for "rankings@the-elite...." email address. So three people that are on the list are ignoring the messages and you who aren't on the list are acting on them? Do you want to be added? Do we need to remove any of the other guys or should they stay as well?

Yes. That is the case. I usually check for pending users every couple of hours just as a habit now. Being on the forwarding list isn't necessary and I don't care to fIll up my email inbox. Up to those other guys if they want to remain on it.

In the main rankings page RSS feed, if players add a comment to their normal-mode PR, you can hover your mouse on the comment bubble and the comment is displayed for you in plain text form in a box.

HOWEVER, if a player's D/LTK PR appears in the feed and has a comment added, if you hover over the bubble, there is nothing. Can we add consistency here somehow? Not sure how the programming aspect works, exactly.

Indeed, see https://gitlab.com/the-elite-net/rankings/issues/91 for this issue.  You could Thumb-Up it or Comment and maybe that will spur some action! Or you could "@" someone on there.  Or if you're feeling really adventurous, you could ask for help in fixing it yourself and then you'll suddenly be a programmer (for real, this one is straightforward).

Thanks to Wouter we closed #79 (closed) recently.

He's displaying the comments when you hover the comment icon, but there are a few spots which just say "Read the comments"

I've always wondered why you can't filter the Recent Activity on ether PD or GE.

Good suggestion! Added to the issue tracker so someone might pick it up:

Stat on player profile page's that allows them to display what control they use.

Also a page that shows statistics for overall statistics in the Elite.

Just proof of concept. Make it sexier with some graphs or something along that.

that's not a player profile, but a per pr setting. similar to 1.2, 2.x, etc. or if you want to use it generally, then change the wording such as "currently uses" so that it doesn't suggest that all prs were necessarily done with the same style. as a per pr setting, I don't think it adds much value over the forum topic that we have for it.
sexy, this

I actually agree with Wouter. This is better suited as a forum post statistic, especially when they require explanations (no new player will understand what this 'setting' is. What would you do in the case of Haycock who currently has 18 D-Pad times, gets a couple of records with alien because he is forced to, and (finally) permanently switches to keyboard?

'Current using' sounds good if it is implemented.

Maybe as an optional thing for when you post a time? So that the statistic ties with the time. I still think it would be cool to know a player's primary grip, and if it comes down to new players not knowing they can simply choose not to fill it in and then come back to it at some point, shouldn't be a forced thing.

Let's fill it in on the issue tracker and if someone feels like making it happen, it will!

could we rename "Leaders" underneath the Goldeneye & Perfect Dark rankings?  These confuse roughly 80-90% of new people who interact with the community over the past 2-3 years.  Something like "WR Count" might be a more appropriate name for these pages.

So... reading the other comments made me realize people are all posting from the perspective of people that actually use and have used the site a lot and are looking for tweaks on functionality or technical fixes i don't get. I have one minor suggestion from the perspective of a non-player who was familiarized with the elite through youtube (one guess who's channel).

Goose has actually mentioned this issue in one or two videos, for the first couple weeks as i was watching his channel i would come to the GE rankings main page and look at the WR table, but if i wanted to look at the player rankings, i would (mistakenly) click over to the Leaders page.

It was only after literally a week or two before I realized that the rankings were beneath the WR table (I'm clearly not the smartest guy). I think that's fine place to put them, but a note at the top of that page and at the top of the Leaders page would clarify that.

Anyway, Goose mentioned that in one of the videos so I figure i'm not the only one to make that mistake, and I thought it might be useful to make the site a bit more accessible to new people not familiar with the community or ranking system.

The ranking system itself is also a tad opaque to a newcomer from youtube, I figured it out once i was looking at the right tables and such, but a link on those pages to the forum topic "A Beginners Guide to Speedrunning Goldeneye" or another thread where the ranking system is explained in detail would also streamline that. (good ranking system by the way)

It took me over 5 years to find the rankings tables beneath the WR tables.  I think it is very important that there be a button to take you directly to them as it is incredibly confusing.

I think we should have the GE, PD and Rare times on the front page as well as the actual pages so random passers-by will know what times we have

I have a good idea. How about we have a "Scroll to the player rankings table" arrow at the top of the page that scrolls to the tables. Literally only 1 tag and 2 lines of jQuery code (or for the INTJs that prefer JavaScript, 5 lines of code).
