Title: The 2008 Elite Deathpool
Post by: Ngamer on December 29, 2007, 03:31:00 am
Welcome to the official topic for the 2008 Elite Deathpool!

For those of you that don't know what a Deathpool is, visit the page on Wikipedia for general information ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_pool (http://archives.luelinks.net/l.php?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_pool) ).

This contest will be maintained by Come and Ngamer. Competitors will have the chance to earn fame, glory, and perhaps even some great prizes! ...*cough*

Here's how it's all going to work
Pick the ten different people you think will expire in the year 2008. One "Death List" of ten guesses per person allowed. Your score at the end of the year is calculated by taking the age at time of death of any dead people you selected and subtracting it from 100.

Example: You pick Barry Bonds (b. 7/24/64). He dies in March 2008 (age 43). You earn 57 points for that pick.

If you pick someone over 100, then you get no points for that person. The person who accumulates the highest total score at the end of the year will be declared the Elite Deathpool Champion.

But to keep things completely fair and even-handed, there are of course some stipulations...

- You may only predict the death of notable personalities. This will be strictly defined by if that person has earned an entry on Wikipedia; if they aren't important enough for a wiki article, they cannot be named in this competition (aka "The 'My Uncle Jeff' Rule").
- Deaths will be counted only in the case of "confirmable" deaths during the calendar year (aka "The Osama bin Laden Rule").
- Picks must be human (aka "The Lassie Rule").
- No picks may be currently under a state-mandated death sentence (or in a pending trial which may result in such a sentence), nor may their celebrity or fame be based primarily on their moribund state or terminal illness (aka "The Terry Schiavo Rule").

And most importantly of all...

- This administration does not tolerate personally influencing the success of your list. If one of the 10 members of your Death List passes away under what authorities determine to be "suspicious circumstances," and you are brought in for questioning as a principle person of interest in the case, you will only receive half-credit for your prediction... regardless of whether or not you are officially convicted of the crime! Although this ruling is undeniably harsh, we feel it is entirely necessary in order to maintain the professional nature of this competition.

Secret Exceptions To This Rule:
* Adam Dunkmaster
* Matt Cook
(suspicious circumstances regarding these individuals will actually result in a doubling of your points)

Ties will be resolved by:
1. Most number of picks dying in a roster
2. Youngest person on roster to expire
3. Earliest roster turned in (if the first two tie-breakers do not decide it)

To enter, simply post your 10-man Death List in this topic. You have until midnight on Friday, January 4th to make your final decision; no entries after that time will be accepted, and any edits made to a Death List after that date will result in immediate disqualification. If you do not feel comfortable about posting your Death List directly into the topic for fear of others copying your brilliant ideas, you can alternatively mail your 10 names to ngamer@gmail.com anytime before January 5th. Do so and I will post them into the topic for you as soon as entries lock.

Results will be constantly updated in this topic, and perhaps also in either an official Excel spreadsheet or a database-driven Deathlist webpage (if I end up making it). The champion will be announced on January 1, 2009.

This topic will also be used to post about any notable recent deaths, whether they made any Lists or not. That should help to keep the topic bumped enough that we'll remember to update the score sheets.
---

And now, an example death list! Feel free to copy and paste this so you can maintain formatting while inserting your own ten choices for '08.

Ngamer's 2008 Death List

10. Emil "HeatoN" Christenson, 23 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeatoN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeatoN)

notes:
- you must include the person's current age (usually found on their wiki page)
- you must link to the person's wiki article (remember, if they don't have one, they cannot be named!)
- this isn't the real Ngamer list, it's just an example!
---

And now, let this exercise in poor taste officially... begin!

I've got my list basically ready, but there may be some agonizing choices left on who eventually makes my final 10. I'll probably submit it privately on the 31st.

Jack, you goon! All your links go to the names on Ngamer's fake list. You've got some nice picks though, if I do say so myself!

Participating in this to begin with is pretty horrible! I mean, how are you supposed to react if someone on your list actually dies?

Hmm, TomKitten is kind of questionable, since the Wiki article is technically about Tom/Katie the supercouple and their baby is more a side-note.  But I think we can allow it unless Come has a strong objection.

Bart's a fine guess Jim, but my current list is so perfect that there's no room for him.  Put him on your own.

Favorite guess so far has got to be David Blaine- great opportunity there!

I think we need a ruling here

I assumed that each named person had to have their OWN wiki page. If they can sneak in just by being mentioned in someone elses page than I will need to completely revisit my list.

I've thought of some names already, but I don't have ten yet.

Btw. I had thought of Amy Winehouse too. I'm still keeping her though, not going to drop anyone because someone else chose him/her too.

Kind of obscure, but Tony Elliot just died. He was once a New Orleans Saint, but I guess it was too long ago for somebody to bother making a wiki page for him. He was 48, depressed, paralyzed, had congestive heart failure and diabetes. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

To view everyone's list at a glance, and to see the latest scoreboard, check out the 2008 Elite Deathlist spreadsheet!

Here is how everyone stacks up in terms of max possible points. On the one hand it's nice to have a big number here, since it means you have a ton of potential, but statistically speaking it's probably a bad thing considering how difficult a time these big number lists will have scoring even a single point.

I don't understand why anybody would pick a 98 year old. Do you really think he's 5 times as likely to die as the best 90 year old you could find? 15 times more likely than a sickly 70 year old? Maybe you plan on winning 2-0-0-0-0-0..., but I just don't see the value!

In the end, I'm not too happy with my own list either, but here were the other 8 names I had in Notepad...

Annette Funicello, 65 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annette_Funicello
Tim Johnson, 61 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Johnson_%28politician%29
Steve Jobs, 52 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_jobs
John Goodman, 55 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goodman
Artie Lange, 40 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artie_Lange
Andy Griffith, 81 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Griffith
Dick Clark, 78 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Clark
Muhammad Ali, 65 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali

I think I'm the only one who picked Jerry Lewis? He was actually the most popular pick LAST year and with good reason...

"Lewis has suffered years of back pain due to a failed slapstick stunt on an Andy Williams television special in 1966 that almost left him paralyzed. Lewis has battled prostate cancer, diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis, and has had two heart attacks. Medical treatment for the fibrosis using
prednisone in the early 2000s caused the comedian to experience weight gain and bloating that noticeably changed his appearance. Lewis suffered a serious heart attack in the 1980s, and second minor heart attack on June 11, 2006 at the end of a cross-country commercial airline flight en route home from New York City. It was later found that he had pneumonia. Lewis had two stents inserted into an artery in his heart that was 90% blocked, and it restored full blood flow to his heart."

To be honest, I don't fully understand the Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lynn Spears and Olsen twins picks.  Sure there are some of us who may not have put much thought into our lists, and sure we might not like these girls, but they're way less likely to die than some other people their ages with wiki articles.  I can only think of Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe being the same kind of young, female icon dying at such a young age.  It just doesn't happen often.  The media won't let it happen.  My list might not be all that great, but these picks are pretty bad.

Right, generally speaking, a 70 year old is more than twice as likely to die as a 40 year old, and those even younger picks represent worse value yet. Granted, I have 3 guys under 40 myself, but 2 of them are dwarves with substance abuse problems and the other is pretty far into Lou Gehrigs disease!

And most of us were just quickly going into this on a lark. I mostly picked people I would be happy to see die at an early age, and I don't see why those stupid bitches can't OD...

Though, what is with the huge Amy Winehouse contingent? What is it I don't know about her?

Here is my assessment of the pool. Entries are listed here in alphabetical order

Beck: C-

Disappointing to see Chris Kattan on this list and Im tempted to downgrade immediately due to this legends presence for no apparent reason. There are a few generic old guys here, id say al-Zawahiri is a reach and Im unclear as to what the Olsen twins are doing here other than a gimmick pick. I kinda like Gordon as a gamble - its just a shame there seem to be so many of these kind of picks here.

Best pick: Robby Gordon
Worst pick: George Bush Junior

Blood: C+

Well this is a real mixed bag. We have a few sound picks like Thatcher and Cheney. Carter and Bush - Im unclear as to why they were chosen other than age, whilst signs seem to be Castro is recovering well from recent health issues. That being said hes an old guy and liable to deteriorate again - not to mention the quantity of enemies he still has. Shane MacGowan has some upside but the Love, Wonder and Spears picks baffle me.

Best pick: Margaret Thatcher
Worst pick: Lindsay Lohan

Bully: D-

This really is a horrid horrid list and then out of nowhere we have perhaps the best pick of the entire pool! I really hate just about every pick here because theres just no obvious reason for any of them other than their fame and youth. Even the old guys/girls arent in poor health. And we have a 20 day old baby? But then BOOM out of nowhere comes Barack Obama. I LOVE this pick so much and it single handedly rescues what would have been a catastrophic grade. Im very sure this guy has at least one serious assasination attempt on him this year.

Best pick: Barack Obama
Worst pick: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands

Come: B+

Finally a somewhat credible list, albeit with a touch of irregularity. Bear Grylls is a great pick and Im sad I couldnt come up with this name myself when I was thinking of guys in this field for mine. Bobby Heenan is also very strong - so much so I actually thought he was dead already! Im not sure about Hall - its certainly not bad but I dont know exactly how good it is. Wilder seems in good health. Sharon and Shriver are obviously marvelous picks and Bhutto has some upside given his age. Malden, aged 95 and in no apparent jeopardy, is an appalling waste.

Best pick: Bear Grylls
Worst pick: Karl Malden

Darky: E+

Another horrible list. Clinton is meh and it seems unlikely even if Bin Laden dies it would be verified. Why on earth Soulja Boy is here I have no idea and the full cast of House? Give me a break. And whats with all the rappers? Paris Hilton? Im really struggling to find anyone here who is more valuable than an empty space. At least everyones relatively young.

Best pick: Hilary Clinton
Worst pick: E-40

DK: C+

I dont mind Musharraf although I dont think its particularly likey he dies. Hefner is a weak choice other than being old and famous. Doyle has had a lot of health issues but is a born survivor so I find him hard to grade. Suri Cruise is just ludicrous, albeit funny. Nick Cannon anyone? The rest is just celebrity riff-raff with very low odds of success.

Best pick: Keith Richards
Worst pick: Michael Vick

Frantic: B

Miller is a decent enough pick given his age. Do Musial or Rickles even have any health issues? Slash i guess is alright as is Art Schlichter. Ali is a good pick. Overall there seems to be a fair amount of hoping going on here - that guys who have lived notorious lifestyles/have potential danger in their careers will fall victim to some bad luck. Im not sure I agree with this strategy but this list could be the dark horse of the pool.

Best pick: Mick Mars
Worst pick: Stan Musial

Goose: B-

This isnt the worst list but there are some highly questionable picks. 50 cent is fanciful and Queen Elizabeth screams of desperation. A few names we've seen before, but its hard to see Goose winning the competition even if they do come off. Ahmed is a fairly respectable pick however.

Best pick: Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed
Worst pick: Kimi Raikkonen

Jack: D+

I dont understand a fair number of these picks. It just seems to be a list of famous people. I really do like Lemieux though, particularly given his age. Rumsfeld is alright I suppose but noone else here interests me in the slightest. OVerall a very wayward and casual list.

Best pick: Mario Lemieux
Worst pick: Kirsten Dunst

Jimbo: F

Automatic F for picking Bart Starr. I just have no idea how this guy adds anything to what otherwise is a very well put together list. He doesnt seem to have any health issues and since he is relatively old already wont give any points even if he does die. I really expected Jim to be challenging for the title this year and Im afraid it doesnt look like that will happen.

Best pick: Empty Space
Worst pick: Bart Starr

Matt: C

Bit of a mix here too with borderline acceptable picks such as Castro and Bush Senior cancelled out by nonsense like Mary-Kate Olsen, Dr Phil and Paul McCartney. I can see why people are picking Amy Winehouse and Ozzy Osbourne etc but I dont believe they are likely to die this year, particularly Winehouse. Whats with Buzz too?

Best pick: Fidel Castro
Worst pick: Dr Phil

Matthijs T: B-

Some tremendous choices here, Pope Benedict and Mandela in particular. Hawking is also very good. Then we get into the famous old people and the bizarre selections that are George Michael and Michael Jackson. Winehouse has made a lot of people lists and thus her death wont settle much in the unlikely event it occurs.

Best pick: Pope Benedict XVI
Worst pick: Gordon Ramsay

mikers: B

This is a really tough set to grade. Theres some VERY good stuff here and its so unfortunate that Lohan and Hilton have to completely ruin what might have been the second best list. We've already gone over how much I love the Obama pick and Rusell Watson is also a superb selection. Some decent middle ground occupied by Clinton, Powell and Fox, throw in a couple of old guys and you have yourself a decent shot. But this could have been SO much better.

Best pick: Britney Spears
Worst pick: Paris Hilton

Ngamer: B

Im not a huge fan of the Graham or Hall picks and Stevens also appears weak. Dick Clark seems a very overrated choice but theres some solid stuff here too with Hawking, Ford and Roberts. Kibaki is appearing in a number of lists and Im not entirely sure why. I can only hope I havent made a huge blunder by not considering him. A possible contender here nonetheless.

Best pick: David Hicks
Worst pick: Henry Sheldon Fitch

Plum: D+

Yet another case of the sublime and the ridiculous. I just dont see where all this Jamie Lynn Spears stuff is coming from. I actually considered Doherty for a while but eventually decided his odds of dying to be too low to be justifiable. There is a fair amount of youth here which of course helps if youre going to make silly picks, but Im not sure even the gems that are Bobby Robson and Prince Philip are enough to save this. Richard Hammond is a thorough waste.

Best pick: Bobby Robson
Worst pick: Paul Gascgoine

QB: D

One word can sum this selection up: disappointing. All I see here is a list of people who have been ill and recovered or who have illnesses that dont appear to threaten their lives in the forthcoming year. There are a couple of tolerable names here and overall the potential is higher than many other peoples entries. Nevertheless this is just impossible to grade highly because, given the thought thats gone into it, its shockingly weak.

Best pick: Suzanne Pleshette
Worst pick: Beetlejuice

Shep: A-

Well this is without a doubt the best entry this year. Just packed full of people practically on their deathbed and younger individuals with massive upside. You can really tell this is a super set of names and the contest could quite easily be wrapped up before the summer holidays! The only reason this doesnt get the full A is because in hindsight it could have been improved with one or two of the better picks from other teams.

Best pick: Khaled Mashal
Worst pick: Ariel Sharon

Wabs: C

Not the best from Wabs, who by his own admission stole picks from other people. At least they tended to be the better ones which counterbalances his own completely inept selections. Id love to give this a lower grade but its very hard to with Mandela, Ali and Castro in there.

Best pick: Nelson Mandela
Worst pick: Paul-Loup Sulitzer

Zerg: E

This was just dismal. I mean, except for Bush, I really could have put all the names into a hat and picked blind for which was the worst. In the end I had to give it to Huynh because its so absurd - although there really are many outstanding contenders for the award. I expect nothing but failure from this list. (which is a good thing, right?)

Best pick: George Bush Senior
Worst pick: Tony Huynh

While we're at it, why not just run some statistical procedures based on geographic location, family relations, criminal pasts, and healthy living. This way I would have made some better picks.
And why should Barack Obama be a good pick? Makes totally no sense to me.. maybe because it's the Black Kennedy or whatever they call him, and he gets shot in the ass too? What a bunch of crap!

I considered picking Bear Grylls as well as Pope Benedict, but I decided I like them too much to be at least somewhat content with them dying and me gaining points.  I also don't understand why shep thinks Robby Gordon is a much better pick than Kimi Raikkonen, since NASCAR crashes are usually much less fatal and f1 is due for one soon.  I think we all just have horrible lists given how many people have wikipedia articles.  We all went for people who are actually too famous.

Richard Hammond i would be most disappointed to see pass on, however should he take another big knock to the head the risks are high, and he has a dangerous job

JL Spears: possible death via childbirth issues, plus needed one young to balance out

Yeah, some of my picks are stupid, but I wanted to lower the average age and thought also picking Bush Senior, Jimmy Carter and Ariel Sharon (I had thought of all three) was a tad cheap and I thought Ariel Sharon wasn't allowed. It's gambling anyway and I think it's not that fun to choose people who are half dead already.

I don't agree with Gordon Ramsey being my worst pick (has to be one of the Michaels). There's probably quite a few people that hate him, both people that know him personally or just from tv. He's just asking for someone to slam a hot pan into his face. And there's always the chances of accidents, so we'll see.

Also, will the page get updated once some person that got picked has had their birthday? Stephen Hawkings' birthday is coming up at the 8th of January for example.

That was a nice analysis Shep.

For my picks, they were basically the first 10 I could come up with. I initially had Keith Richards but really, will he ever die? I was looking for an adventurer to add to the list. Maybe a free solo rock climber or BASE jumper. The only person I could come up with was John Bachar but it looks like he doesn't climb as much as he used to. Some people mentioned this Bear Grylls guy. That's the kind of candidate I was looking for. Excellent choice.

I didn't want to edit my list but a couple of other names came up that made it to other lists: Jack LaLanne, Mini-Me, Dick Clark, and Charlton Heston.

QB unofficially mentioned John Goodman. During his Rosanne days, he was this loveable brawny dude. But the last time I saw him he had turned into a big fat guy. If I had initially thought of Goodman he would have made my list.

Jerry Lewis: I don't think he has much time left. It'll be a sad day when he dies, given his contribution to Muscular Dystrophy over the decades plus his underappreciated role as a comic genius. A few months ago I was on a voyage to Mexico and he was a passenger on the ship. I never saw him on the ship but I saw him a few times in port in a wheelchair being pushed by a valet.

I certainly hope that most of the people on everyone's lists don't pass away anytime soon. It'll be interesting to see who the first one will be. I really don't expect more than just a few to die in 2008.

No, the rule is that you can't pick somebody who is famous only for their terrible disease/health condition. The whole point of the game is to pick celebrities with health problems who are close to kicking the bucket. Come and Shep have a guy who is in a coma, in a persistent vegetative state!

You win a Deathpool by taking 3 factors into consideration

- how sick someone is
- how old they are
- how dangerous their lifestyle is

QB took the time to do enough research to weigh those factors, and carefully constructed his list based on them.  He's being rewarded for his effort so far, in the same way that he was rewarded (with two outright victories) for the hard work and research he put into each one of his football picks this past season... I fail to see anything ridiculous about the arrangement.

Title: The 2008 Elite Deathpool
Post by: Quiet Bol on January 22, 2008, 12:41:00 am
She may have been before your time, Karl, but any argument that she wasn't famous enough is completely asinine.

And I don't know how I'm supposed to find old people that are in great health, but fwiw, Pleshette insisted she was cancer free.

And my list pales in comparison to Shep's. I don't know who they are, but half of them seem like locks to die this year.
Title: The 2008 Elite Deathpool
Post by: Red Bull on January 22, 2008, 03:44:00 am
Ridiculous is that it takes like no research to compile a list with 10 known people with a disease/other weird thing from which they will die soon. (Google: celebrity cancer, celebrity disease), first hit: http://www.thecancerblog.com/category/celebrity-cancer-diagnosis/ (http://www.thecancerblog.com/category/celebrity-cancer-diagnosis/)
In fact, I bet QB doesn't even know half of the names who are on his list.

Title: The 2008 Elite Deathpool
Post by: mikerspd on January 22, 2008, 10:55:00 am
Having cancer does NOT mean they are about to die... a lot of those people's cancer is completely in remission, or isn't affecting in a life-threatening way. But arguing your point is retarded, because that IS the point of compiling these lists, if you want to be serious.
Title: The 2008 Elite Deathpool
Post by: Ngamer on January 22, 2008, 06:21:00 pm
I don't get it Bully; why are you putting 5x more work into this pointless argument than you did into constructing your list in the first place?  This is just a silly game, can't we leave it at that?

In other news... Heath Ledger, dead?  I can't believe it...  I know he got really messed up in the past year because he was taking such a serious character actor approach to becoming the Joker (he isolated himself in a room for a whole month just writing a journal from the viewpoint of the Joker and talking to himself, trying to get the voice down) and had a hard time getting to sleep at night all during the filming.  But he looked so healthy in Brokeback you thought he'd live another hundred years.  I wonder what happened in that hotel room...

EDIT - Apparently now they're reporting an overdose on sleeping pills.

Myron Cope

at 79
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Myron Cope, colorful sports broadcaster and reporter whose Terrible Towel remains the banner of the Steelers nation, has died.

More on the death of Myron Cope

• Obituary: Cope's career spanned newspapers, magazines, radio and TV

• Readers Forum: Share your memories of Myron Cope

In declining health since even before his 2005 retirement after a record 35 years of Steelers broadcasts, Mr. Cope died this morning of respiratory failure.

He was 79.

One of the last of the great sports characters, Mr. Cope's life and career were nothing less than book-worthy, even if he had to write it himself. Twice.

"Double Yoi" it was called both times, the second an updated version of the original 2002 volume, the title immortalizing one of Mr. Cope's signature exclamations, which, along with "Okle-dokle," "Dumbkopf!", and "How do?", became so familiar to his radio and TV audiences.

QB
Suzanne Pleshette (January 31, 1937 - January 19, 2008) - 30 points

...and your 2008 deathpool champion is...

Christodoulos (January 17, 1939 - January 28, 2008) - 31 points
