Well, Character Battle 7 is upon us at gamefaqs. It is great fun every year, and this season we're on characters again. But don't worry, game hopefuls... we'll get a game contest this winter!

SEPTEMBER 15th 7:00 PM pacific is your cutoff. 3.5 weeks seems very excessive, but should be plenty of time for you.

If you are so inclined, nominate people you'd like to see in it. Not that many people nominate, so this could make a difference. I'm sure Jon will pipe in his list of hopefuls. Its always fun to post your list if you do it!
Then comes....
I'll keep editing this as developments arise. But basically, in a few weeks we'll have a bracket. Unless Jon uses our Summer Contest 2008 skeleton for brackets/spread etc for an elite contest, I plan on doing it in excel like I always do. At which time, it'll be very easy for all of you to make a bracket, save the file and upload it to geocities, its super easy and we'll get to that later.

Here's who I'm going with this year:

- He's got a cool character design and will look good in a match pic, but honestly I don't expect much of him after Assassin's Creed was a semi-disappointment this past holiday season. He's in my noms to pay for a board-wide bet we make called the Guru Contest.
GlaDOS Portal can't spoilers!
- She's become an internet sensation, as really everything about Portal has. Sure, she won't carry a ton of weight into a site-wide Contest like this, but she has a strong hardcore fanbase that could give her a decent showing against plenty of people.

- I pushed for Diddy last season and was very upset that he barely missed the cut, THEN was announced for Brawl two weeks too late! That would have been a free pass, but oh well, he's looking good to make it in this time now that he can play with the combined power of the DKC series and the SSB series. He's not going to be a world-beater, but should still perform decently and will likely be one of the stronger new characters we see in '08.

- I'm not nutzo about MK, but he's got a very good character design and is sure to look great in the match pic, is a popular choice in Brawl, and had a strangely impressive performance last year. In '07 he beat Peach and CATS easily and hung in with Sephiroth better than expected, so there's some excitement to see if that was legit strength or just format weirdness.

- Here's the one newcomer I do have high hopes for. Pokemon was great last season, including a historic run for Pikachu and a shockingly strong showing from Mewtwo. Char is the guy we've pegged to be the strongest of all- he doesn't have haters like Pikachu, he was a favorite choice in R/Y/B, he's a very popular choice in Brawl, and on top of it all, who doesn't like dragons?

- Poor Fox has had very bad luck over the years. He's clearly one of the top characters from that second Nintendo tier, but never gets the chance to show it because he keeps getting squashed by Link or Mario. I'm pulling for him this season in the hopes of getting him over to some non-Nintendo competition that he could really sink his teeth into.
Seifer Almasy Final Fantasy VIII http://ffuniverserp.tripod.com/Seifer_leader.jpg
- I don't know anything about Seifer really (although as you may have seen in the Deagle topic, I did just purchase FF8), but he was the #1 snubbed character last season in terms of people we fought hardest for on B8 but didn't make the cut. In any case, Squall has become a powerhouse in recent years, so it's weird that we've never given any other FF8 character a chance in the Contest.

- The Sun is the top joke nomination for the season. Pretty silly, but certainly a more funny entrant than a Tetris block, so he's got my support!

- Again, don't know too much about this FF character, but he was one of the top snubs last year, and there are some people who think he might be worth something in a Contest setting, so I'll throw him a bone.

- Tabuu is this crazy spirit of pure evil energy or something that you fight during Brawl. He doesn't have much in the way of an explanation or backstory, but it's a cool and memorable boss fight, and he's got a neat character design that would carry over to a match pic. He's a super-long shot, but I'd like to see him in a match as a test of what a purely Brawl-based character would be able to accomplish.

- I'm not that big into Jiggly, though I was a pretty fair Jiggles player back in the SSB era. But all of the other 11 original Smash characters have had a shot in the Contests, so I'd like to complete the set some day.

- Tifa had an extremely strange 2006 performance in which she very nearly knocked off Samus, and then she was weird against last year by not even making the field. We need to see her again to answer some questions. Also, she creates some excellent match pics.

- Street Fighter 4 is going to be released right in the middle of this Contest, and Ken keeps on missing out on the brackets over the past 3 years while Ryu has remained strong, so it seems about the right time to bring him back.

In summary, no extremely strong feelings about who needs to make it this season. The most important thing in the past couple days was hearing that yes, we WILL be getting a Game Contest, and soon. I'm looking at this Character Battle as more or less a fun little diversion until then.

My initial thoughts...

My final thoughts...
very excited for every match, and will be hardcore rooting against L block. The final matches look amazing without him. A few chumps I see making it far, and in general this bracket is VERY VERY tough. The only thing harder will be in the inevitable 4 way game battle this january.
I'll post later with my exciting inclusions, my "favorites" bracket.
Living with Sarah, I doubt I'll have time to do the usual writeups, pre matchup analysis, etc., so I'll be an observer this year, but again I will be happy to run our brackets through the excel framework I set up last year if there is enough interest.

So many tough matches to pred this year. Awesome to see Kain finally made it though, among others.
I don't understand what's good about L-block's matchup. It looks tailor-made to give him trouble in round 1 and doesn't get better.

If L-block has the joke support again this year and can survive his tougher first round matchups, he gets some favorable SFF later. Mario/Link/Samus/L block or something ridiculous.
The more I think about it, the more I think he's out round 1 or 2 though. But if he makes it past that, things don't look good.

The end of this bracket is *very* hard to predict if you take L-block out.
That is why I hope he loses, having a clear winner every round is lame.
And no, I don't think "link" as a clear winner every round is true, and I think even if he is, the 2nd place decisions are VERY tough all the way out then, whereas otherwise it'd just be l-block and obv 2nd place.
Also, given the bracket setup, Cloud could win again :-X. Really hard to pick the winner this year. Top is so nintendo stacked that SFF goes crazy, and I'm seeing link/mario/cloud/snake or something in the finals could easily let cloud take it down.

and I penned in all the first round results that I'm at least 90% sure of, with the idea being that I could get those "locks" locked down early and then give some consideration to the rest before finalizing my bracket. To my surprise, after taking some time away from the bracket and coming back with a fresh outlook, there are only 13 R1 locks!
I mean alot of these other polls are pretty much locks, but I looked at the matches from a few different angles and was able to come up with a situation where there was some doubt as to the winner in everything else for R1. This is a pretty strong testament to the work SB put into creating the bracket this year IMO, or at the very least the effort he put into keeping the top half balanced (it kind of seems like he got bored or ran out of time near the bottom, as there's some wasted potential in D7 and D8 that you certainly don't see any hint of in D1 or D2).

The *entire* chain falls apart at any link, and its a lot to bank on, but might be what my bracket needs to stand out. It might be a disaster of a choice for the-elite contest (where I'd clearly go for the much safer, Samus in the finals and Cloud in 2nd overall bracket), but do I want to win it here or win the entire contest where I'd need some luck like above?
I've got 45 minutes to decide which path I'm going to take along the top of the bracket there, I've got everything else finished. Aaaah

Plus the problem is, even if the first thing happens, its not like it is clear cut from there that the rest will follow. I could easily see it getting that far and Cloud still ending up in 2nd.

Jon is poised to gain 8 points on the field today. He can't beat Octo if it goes Link > Cloud at the end, though. Yeah! I'm surprised my finals matches went so well, in fact if I didn't take a few stupid risks in some earlier matches I definately would've made the top fifty list (I was 68th overall). I have a much better feel for these contests now I think, and will attempt to run away with the victory next year.
