Title: Elite Fantasy Football 2008 Post by: Neo on August 30, 2008, 10:46:00 pm In any case, just need wheat's analysis before we can move on! Post by: wheatrich on August 31, 2008, 02:06:00 am Move on. Post by: rshepherd1000 on September 01, 2008, 03:51:00 am Post by: Neo on September 01, 2008, 04:48:00 am Post by: Jimbo on September 01, 2008, 11:34:00 am Post by: DavidK5 on September 01, 2008, 12:01:00 pm Post by: Ngamer on September 04, 2008, 04:19:00 am Now then, if I'm going to be discussing the draft its not going to be happening off the cuff- I'm a statistics person, and if I'm going to be doing any kind of writeup, its got to be centered on cold hard stats. So with that in mind, the basis for this analysis is going to be our final draft board vs the average draft position standings at KFFL (they analyze hundreds of fantasy drafts and combine them all to create the "ADP" for every player). Now obviously not every league uses our exact scoring system so there's bound to be some variation here and there, but our system is pretty much standard so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Also, I'm only going to consider the first 12 rounds of the Draft, since beyond that we were often picking guys not even on the draft boards and trying to track all the nonsense just gets a little silly. Alright, here we go! Starting with the Round By Round Analysis Round One Biggest Steal - Tom Brady, 10th pick by QB (3.73 spot value) Brady went with the 6th or 7th pick in most drafts this season- I know QB wasn't looking to land him, but when he fell to the 10 spot it was just too good an opportunity to pass up. (For everyone else's sake, please Tom, don't repeat that '07 showing!) Other good values: Clinton Portis, 12th pick by wiff (1.1 spot value) - Not a biggie, but Portis went 10th or 11th in most leagues, so wiff did well in pulling him down with the last pick of R1. Biggest Reach - Peyton Manning, 11th pick by Boss (8.94 spot reach) Manning only one pick after Brady? With a nagging injury he's trying to kick, doubts about the Colts offense not being the juggernaut its been in the past, and Tony Romo still 11 picks away from being taken? Very risky pre-ranking decision here by Boss. Other large stretches: Marshawn Lynch, 7th pick by PDO (5.29 spot reach) - PDO must see something in Lynch that no one else does; he wasn't taken until the very end of R1 or the start of R2 in pretty much every other draft this season. Round Two Biggest Steal - Reggie Wayne, 17th pick by Come (3.41 spot value) Come must have been jumping for joy when his team's stud WR was still on the board this late- quite the surprise, as he was gone by the final pick of R1 in plenty of drafts this year. Other good values: Larry Johnson, 16th pick by Youse (3.29 spot value) - LJ was supposed to be snatched up at the close of R1- a pretty significant Victory for Michael to be able to pull him down this late in the second. Biggest Reach - Maurice Jones-Drew, 13th pick by wiff (12.85 spot reach) No one doubts MJD's skills as a runner, but the presence of Fred Taylor in the backfield kept most fantasy owners leery of this talented back. Not wiff though! He's all about upside- and he better hope he sees plenty of "up" this season from MJD in order to justify this pick. Other large stretches: Marques Colston, 20th pick by Shep (4.92 spot reach) - Shep's choice of Colston with Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald, and Houshmanzadeh still on the board had Fantasy owners worldwide scratching their heads and clucking their tongues. Round Three Biggest Steal - Jamal Lewis, 34th pick by QB (8.29 spot value) Fantasy owners everywhere are picking Lewis to have a rebound season in '08, so QB was very excited to be able to steal him this late in the third round, earning himself the best value of the draft to this point. Other good values: Larry Fitzgerald, 25th pick by wheat (5.3 spot value) - Colston and Johnson going too high (by the numbers at least) allowed LF to fall right into wheat's lap- an offer he couldn't refuse. Biggest Reach - Darren McFadden, 36th pick by wiff (10.46 spot reach) wiff announced it was time to "get crazy" before making this choice, and boy did he ever! McFadden's got great potential, certainly, but the numbers dictate that he should have lasted almost an entire extra round before coming off the board. wiff sure loves that "upside!" Other large stretches: Wes Welker, 27th pick by DK (9.02 spot reach) - Welker was the surprise breakout star of the '07 fantasy season, but taking him this high had both QB and wheat rubbing their chins in confusion- and it appears most fantasy owners would have been in the same boat! Plaxico Burress, 29th pick by Shep (8.18 spot reach) - With Osi out for the season, Shep must be counting on the Giants being forced to throw alot of long balls to stay in games and help his justify this pick. Round Four Biggest Steal - Reggie Bush, 44th pick by Shep (15.33 spot value) Reggie's Fantasy stock took a major nosedive last season after he proved he couldn't be a workhorse back for very long without injuring himself. Even so, for such a dynamic scoring talent to remain on the board until late in R4 is nearly unthinkable; I'm sure Shep couldn't believe his luck when Bush fell to him in this position. Other good values: Drew Brees, 40th pick by Youse (12.93 spot value) - With Shockey joining Bush and McAllister and a speedy set of WRs, the Saints are expected to pack plenty of firepower in '08, which made Brees the consensus #4 QB this season... so what was he still doing sitting in the green room this far into Draft Night? I don't know, but Youse isn't complaining! Biggest Reach - Derek Anderson, 42nd pick by PDO (15.33 spot reach) A preseason concussion hurt everyone's opinion of Anderson... except, apparently, for PDO. Though this pick might have been influenced by the run on QBs that Youse started (Come followed with Palmer, leaving PDO without a more solid option here). Other large stretches: Antonio Gates, 37th pick by wiff (12.48 spot reach) - Gates is clearly still at the top of the TE heap, but to go with ANY tight end at the very start of R4 is a reach by nearly any measure. Round Five Biggest Steal - Calvin Johnson, 54th pick by Neo (10.1 spot value) Johnson's an incredible athlete and in the eyes of many is poised for a breakout year, but rumors of the Lions toning down the pass this season in favor of a ball control running game kept him on the board for longer than expected. Quite a coup for Neo get lucky enough to a talent like this in the middle of R5, regardless of circumstances! Other good values: Santonio Holmes, 51st pick by DK (4.04 spot value) - This really wasn't that big a shakeup, but it was the only other one this round had to offer. So too bad! Biggest Reach - Nate Burleson, 59th pick by Boss (20.24 spot reach) Ex- excuse me? Bryan must see something in Burleson that no one else does, because this guy lasted into the 7th round in most drafts this season. He'll have to hope for a surprisinly strong showing if this pick is going to be justified. Other large stretches: Joey Galloway, 60th pick by wiff (16.45 spot reach) - Rumor has it wiff hired a personal trainer two weeks before the draft in order to prep himself for all the streeeeeetching he had planned. Round Six Biggest Steal - Edgerrin James, 72nd pick by wheat (28.71 spot value) What in the WORLD was Edge still doing on the draft board at this position, only 1 pick away from R7? At the time QB called wheat's choice here the biggest steal of the year, and the overall ADP number bear that decision out- now to find out if this one actually pays out like the biggest steal of the season. Other good values: LenDale White, 71st pick by Ngamer (12.38 spot value) - Repeat everything that was just said for Edge, except at half the volume. Fred Taylor, 70th pick by DK (10.88 spot value) - Repeat everything that was said two spots above for Edge, except at one third the volume. Biggest Reach - Santana Moss, 61st pick by wiff (31.59 spot reach) Oh good heavens. Other large stretches: Roddy White, 63rd pick by QB (7.81 spot reach) - Pfft, you call that a stretch? Someone should have been training up alongside wiff this offseason! Round Seven Biggest Steal - Matt Forte, 82nd pick by QB (19.77 spot value) Apparently this Forte guy is going to be running the ball for the Bears, or something? Yeah, that news caught the rest of the Elite by surprise as well, as no one showed any interest in the guy and allowed QB to snatch up what appears to have been an extremely good value. Other good values: Tony Gonzalez, 75th pick by DK (13.02 spot value) - Not sure if we were more concerned about Gonzo's age or what figures to be another inconsistent offensive year for the Chiefs, but in any case our fears resulted in a really sweet pickup for Sex Rex and the boys. Kevin Smith, 79th pick by PDO (1.56 spot value) - Repeat the Forte comment at half the volume. Biggest Reach - Kevin Curtis, 84th pick by wiff (82.54 spot reach) *sigh* Other large stretches: Todd Heap, 83rd pick by Boss (23.56 spot reach) - I realize the tight end well was running dry by this point, but gosh, Boss just kept on digging! Marc Bulger, 76th pick by Jimbo (20.53 spot reach) - If only Jim had made use of the pre-ranks, he could have snagged Favre in this position instead. Would have still been a reach, but yikes at the size of this one. Round Eight Biggest Steal - DeAngelo Williams, 91st pick by Neo (19.67 spot value) Did Neo do his homework this season, or did he just get lucky by stumbling into pick after pick like this? The world may never know. Other good values: Brett Favre, 92nd pick by Shep (14.1 spot value) - Shep made it very clear that he'd had no intention of drafting Brett, but when he fell more than an entire round too far, the poor guy had no choice but to buy him up for a heck of a value. Biggest Reach - New England, 86th pick by Boss (49.52 spot reach) Can't get down on Boss too much for this one- no matter how well he pre-ranked, the computer starts to force defenses and kickers on you at this point, so he really just got unlucky by having his R8 pick come so early in the round. Wait a minute, what am I saying, I CAN get down on Boss, because he ought to have attended the Draft and not had to deal with the CPU problem in the first place. Other large stretches: Ted Ginn Jr, 95th pick by Ngamer (42.23 spot reach) - Technically the computer made this pick for me, but I don't really mind it- I needed a WR here but everyone decent had already come off the board, so I'd probably have gone with Ginn or someone comparable if I'd have been there to pull the trigger manually. Heath Miller, 88th pick by Youse (27.82 spot reach) - Well now, that's really something. Rudi Johnson, 94th pick by DK (25.49 spot reach) - Whoops! Round Nine Biggest Steal - Chicago, 105th pick by Youse (13.01 spot reach) This was an extremely odd round where everyone rushed to fill their kicker and defense slots and so no one ended up getting any kind of value with their picks. Youse got the closest to a "steal" by only reaching up 13 spots in order to get the Bears D. Other good values: NONE Biggest Reach - Donald Lee, 104th pick by Come (84.2 spot reach) I actually think Lee should have a decent enough season at the TE position, but honestly, there was no reason to jump at him here in R9 when he could easily have been picked up in R14... or 15... or free agency. Other large stretches: Shayne Graham, 107th pick by Boss (70.28 spot reach) - Ouch, the CPU bug bites again! ALL THE REST Round Ten Biggest Steal - Julius Jones, 113th pick by Come (39.48 spot value) I guess everyone gave up on Jones after he was outplayed pretty convincingly by Marion Bearder the past couple years; a pretty foolish decision, since in reality there's no shame in coming in second to a Bearder (Jim or QB can verify this). In any case, Come doesn't mind, as it opened the door for some very nice value here in the late rounds! Other good values: Vincent Jackson, 112th pick by Youse (30.44 spot value) - Youse nearly choked to death when he realized a fantasy stud like Jackson was going to fall to him this late. Jay Cutler, 109th pick by wiff (25.92 spot value) - V-v-v-value? From w-w-w-wiff? By picking a Bronco? Alright, now I really HAVE seen it all! Biggest Reach - Kevin Boss, 120th pick by wheat (73.06 spot reach) *scratches head* Other large stretches: Bryant Johnson, 111th pick by QB (61.91 spot reach) - *rubs chin thoughfully* Adam Vitatieri, 115th pick by Neo (49.3 spot reach) *fists BloodE* Round Eleven Biggest Steal - Ricky Williams, 130th pick by QB (49.69 spot value) QB is well known for nabbing great running backs with upside in the late rounds, but he may have truly outdone himself here. Ricky's probably still a long shot, but eh, that's fine out of a R11 pick IMO and I'd certainly have given Williams a long hard look if he'd still been around in the 12th. Other good values: Chris Perry, 121st pick by wheat (39.56 spot value) - This was a good pick from the outset based on the official numbers. It became a great pick later in the day when Rudi Johnson was released. What a windfall! Felix Jones, 125th pick by Shep (27.77 spot value) - I don't know anything about Felix Jones so I'm just going to grin and nod and give this a thumbs up. Biggest Reach - Justin Gage, 127th pick by PDO (71.57 spot reach) This Just In- PDO has the longest reach of any Eliter! *eyes wiff nervously* Other large stretches: Steelers, 123rd pick by DK (30.91 spot reach) - This doesn't seem like such a bad pick, though I guess it could have waited another round. Round Twelve Biggest Steal - Eli Manning, 141st pick by Jimbo (51.4 spot value) You've got to want it! You've got to want it! Other good values: Justin Fargas, 136th pick by Youse (43.53 spot value) - This Just In- Youse gets better value from his picks than any other Eliter! Vernon Davis, 139th pick by Neo (41.1 spot value) - Again, did Neo realize how brightly he was picking these guys, or did he just keep stumbling into situations like this? Biggest Reach - Andre Davis, 134th pick by Boss (93.48 spot reach) On the plus side, uh... uh... Alright, I don't know. Other large stretches: Shaun Alexander, 137th pick by Come (68.46 spot reach) - Who Come cut about two seconds later, so I guess this move was just made for the sake of firing Alexander? I guess I can sort of understand that. Coming tomorrow: those highly anticipated Draft Grades! Post by: wheatrich on September 04, 2008, 04:35:00 am edit--kinda funny I was rubbing my chin when I didn't even get into the draft till after round 5. edit2--although the analysis is clearly flawed because it's mostly based on who idiots picked where and when I love the effort. Post by: Ngamer on September 04, 2008, 04:58:00 am And you were scratching that chin in your sleep- I saw every minute of it! Post by: Quiet Bol on September 04, 2008, 06:57:00 am That said, I saw a lot of really good RB values become available, but I couldn't act on them after taking a QB in the 1st and RBs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. My WR situation was absolutely pitiful, so I didn't have much wiggle room to stockpile RBs. In retrospect, I hate that I took Thomas Jones in the 4th, because although he should have been great value there according to many, I'm not that high on him. There were actually fairly good WRs left at that point, but as there were a few who seemed more or less equal, I let them slip a little further. It should have come as no surprise that none of them came back, leaving me with trash to sift through for my #1 WR. I suspect things would have gone smoother for me if I'd just taken Portis at 1.10 and gone from there. Now for some comments on your comments: Marshawn Lynch, 7th pick by PDO (5.29 spot reach) - PDO must see something in Lynch that no one else does; he wasn't taken until the very end of R1 or the start of R2 in pretty much every other draft this season. I see it too. I'm fairly certain I would have made the same pick in this spot. Marques Colston, 20th pick by Shep (4.92 spot reach) - Shep's choice of Colston with Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald, and Houshmanzadeh still on the board had Fantasy owners worldwide scratching their heads and clucking their tongues. I dunno, I think these guys are all fairly interchangeable here. You could take any of the 4 and not be wrong. Andre Johnson has to be the guy with the most upside, but also the most risk. I'd normally say Housh is the safest pick, but with his hamstring ailing him and the other nonsense going on in Cincy, I'd have to bump him to 4th. Personally, I like Fitz, as I think he has the best balance of upside and reliability this year. Colston is in the same boat as Fitz really, though with less of a track record. Wes Welker, 27th pick by DK (9.02 spot reach) - Welker was the surprise breakout star of the '07 fantasy season, but taking him this high had both QB and wheat rubbing their chins in confusion- and it appears most fantasy owners would have been in the same boat! Yes, I believe my exact words were "oh my". Wheat snored in agreement. Nate Burleson, 59th pick by Boss (20.24 spot reach) Ex- excuse me? Bryan must see something in Burleson that no one else does, because this guy lasted into the 7th round in most drafts this season. He'll have to hope for a surprisinly strong showing if this pick is going to be justified. One thing to keep in mind is that Burleson is one of the league's top return men and most leagues don't count return yards. BUT, I have no idea if Burleson is actually going to be returning many kicks this year. I was hearing that Seattle didn't want him returning kicks and doubling as a starting WR. Edgerrin James, 72nd pick by wheat (28.71 spot value) What in the WORLD was Edge still doing on the draft board at this position, only 1 pick away from R7? At the time QB called wheat's choice here the biggest steal of the year, and the overall ADP number bear that decision out- now to find out if this one actually pays out like the biggest steal of the season. What I remember saying is that Edge being on the board at that point was just silly, even coming from an Edge-hater. I was half-tempted to take him myself, but this was squarely in the section of the draft where I had no business looking at RBs. On the flip side, if Hightower really does take all the goal line carries, Edge won't even live up to this late pick. Roddy White, 63rd pick by QB (7.81 spot reach) - Pfft, you call that a stretch? Someone should have been training up alongside wiff this offseason! To be fair, I needed a WR, I deemed Roddy the best available, and there were 18 picks until my next. He certainly wasn't going to come back. Also in this round, I really liked Shep's Donald Driver pick. Whether KFFL agrees or not, I think that was a steal and he was the only one I had really considered over Roddy. Julius Jones, 113th pick by Come (39.48 spot value) I guess everyone gave up on Jones after he was outplayed pretty convincingly by Marion Bearder the past couple years; a pretty foolish decision, since in reality there's no shame in coming in second to a Bearder (Jim or QB can verify this). In any case, Come doesn't mind, as it opened the door for some very nice value here in the late rounds! I cannot confirm that. There is much shame in it. Yes, Julius slipped and was a nice get in the 10th round. Chris Perry, 121st pick by wheat (39.56 spot value) - This was a good pick from the outset based on the official numbers. It became a great pick later in the day when Rudi Johnson was released. What a windfall! I had my ranks listed in Yahoo's prerank order for most of the draft, and Chris Perry was hidden waaay down past where he belonged. When I noticed him a few picks before wheat got him, my first reaction was "WOW". I didn't feel like I needed to go back to the RB well, and I did wonder if Perry could stay hidden a little longer, but there was no doubt I was taking him when the draft got back to my end. Perry already had taken the job, and that Rudi would be cut or traded was fairly obvious to anybody monitoring the situation. Getting this kind of upside this late in the draft is startling. Anyway...great post, Jon! I'm glad somebody took the initiative. Post by: Boss on September 04, 2008, 11:28:00 pm Post by: youseinthehouse on September 05, 2008, 12:58:00 am In other news, public leagues are easy. I got Thomas Jones 65th overall in round 7, and Chris Perry 116th overall in round 12. Granted it was half autopickers, but still. Wayne, Calv. Johnson, and Housh are my receivers. And those two RBs are backups to my Addai and Parker there, booyah. Also have Super 5 and Favretastic 4 at Quarterback, lol. Gonna stomp. Wheat reminds me of Quoyle from The Shipping News with all that chin rubbing. The second is Weighted Average Reach, where the formula rewards you for getting better value in the early rounds while minimizing the effect of reaches in the later rounds. Which of those systems is more accurate you can decide for yourself; I've provided both numbers in either case. Let's get this show on the road! Post by: Neo on September 06, 2008, 04:51:00 am Welcome to Neo's Fantasy Football Preview for 2008! For whatever reason, I haven't yet been chased out of town for my disgraceful mid-season disappearance last year, so I'm going to do my best to make up for it this season*. The draft has been covered quite thoroughly by Ngamer, so I won't be discussing it myself. Just to be clear, if you're after in-depth, insightful fantasy knowledge and analysis, you'd best look elsewhere; I'm anything but an expert, and only this year will I actually get to watch regular NFL games. I will try to make things as interesting as possible, but my wrap-ups will mostly be a nice, easy recap of the games suitable for both competitors and non-Fantasy Eliters who would like to follow our progress. Speaking of competitors, let's check out this year's batch! RETURNERS As one of only 3 Eliters to feature in all 6 years of Elite Fantasy competition, QB's Daytona Wildcats will be looking to solidify his place as the league's most successful competitor. With outright wins in 2004 & 2007 and regular season wins in 2003 & 2005, QB is easily one of the favourites to take this year's cup. Ngamer and his Superteam are back for the 6th year running. The 2003 champion was quiet for a few years, finishing between 5th and 7th for the following few seasons, until a deadly duo of Brady and LT allowed Jon to dominate last year's regular season, finishing 2 wins and over 100 points ahead of his nearest competition. He'll be looking to bounce back from a shock semi-final loss to Wheat which left him in 3rd place overall. Come - who is still yet to think of a name for his team - is the final of 3 Eliters to feature in all 6 years of fantasy football competition thus far. As one of the most consistent performers, he has finished in the top 5 every season thus far. He'll be looking to add to his record which includes 1st and 2nd place regular season finishes in 2004 and 2007 respectively. Next up is myself and the Killer Kangaroos! In my 5th straight year of competition in a league that many years ago sparked my love for American Football, I'll be looking to improve on performances which have proven my Killers to be anything but deadly. With no top 4 places to my name, my best (and yet most disappointing) performance was last year, where shock losses in the final two weeks of the regular season threw me out of the top 4 after a fairly long run at the top. Boss - who is also yet to think of a suitable name for his team - joins us for the 4th straight year. After a 2nd place regular season finish (before falling a whopping 5 spots to 7th in the playoffs) on debut in 2005, he followed up with a solid pair of 3rd place finishes in 2006, before a disappointing 2007 left him in 9th overall. He's fighting from the ground up this year after missing the live draft, though he still fields a fairly good team. Wheat, our third and final competitor without a real team name, joins for his 4th year. Despite missing the 2006 season, he has continually improved every single year, most recently finishing in 2nd place in 2007. Will he be able to go that one extra step this year and grab the gold? Only time will tell! PDO and his Perfect Players are back for their 4th straight season. A 10th place finish on debut was quickly forgotten as he took the championship the following year. He improved on an 8th place regular season finish in 2007, finishing 5th after playoffs, and will be looking to make an even greater improvement this year. Wiff's Tinfoil Hat Brigade - one of the best team names in history - rounds out our competitors returning for their 4th season. A disappointing 10th place finish in 2004 was blown away by one of the most astonishing, unusual occurrences in our league's history in 2006. Wiff somehow managed to finish the regular season on top, despite being 2ND LAST in total points. He couldn't carry such a streak all the way however, falling at the last hurdle and bowing out in 2nd place with the luckiest team in history. Such luck abandoned him in 2007 as he finished dead last, and can only look to improve this year. Youse and his... Michael Victory (eh?), seemingly disappointed with a 4th place finish in 2003, disappeared mysteriously for 3 straight years before returning to the league in 2007, where he finished in 8th place. Failure to accurately remember this year's draft time meant he missed the first few rounds of picks, but still looks to be a contender with an otherwise solid team. Shep joins us for a 3rd straight season with his self-proclaimed "Ridic Team". A 9th place finish in 2006 was quickly improved upon in 2007 with a solid 6th position, and he'll be looking to make a similar improvement this year. The biggest (ohoho) and last of our returners for 2008 is Jimbo's Calories, who graces us with a team name at last after two years of unoriginality. A respectable 4th place finish in his 2006 debut couldn't be repeated last year, as he fell to 10th place with the least amount of points for the year. He may have missed the draft, but can Jimbo turn those burnt calories in to wins? Stay tuned! NEWCOMERS With one spot left to be filled, we've had to call for reinforcements - and you won't be disappointed! DK joins us for the first time, and if the name is anything to go by, his Sexy Rexy Sea Heros are in for a wildly successful year. His impressive team makes him a genuine contender for the title on debut. That brings us to the end of this year's field, and it looks to be an exciting year. Here's a summary of past performances for each of our 11 returners. Year / Playoff Placing / Regular Season Placing / Total Points Placing QB 03: 6th, 1st, 1st 04: 1st, 2nd, 2nd 05: 3rd, 1st, 1st 06: 6th, 5th, 3rd 07: 1st, 3rd, 2nd Ngamer 03: 1st, 2nd, 2nd 04: 6th, 5th, 8th 05: 5th, 6th, 3rd 06: 7th, 7th, 5th 07: 3rd, 1st, 1st Come 03: 5th, 7th, 10th 04: 2nd, 1st, 1st 05: 2nd, 4th, 7th 06: 5th, 6th, 8th 07: 4th, 2nd, 4th Neo 04: 12th, 12th, 12th 05: 8th, 5th, 8th 06: 8th, 8th, 6th 07: 7th, 5th, 3rd Boss 05: 7th, 2nd, 2nd 06: 3rd, 3rd, 2nd 07: 9th, 9th, 9th Wheat 04: 7th, 8th, 6th 05: 4th, 7th, 4th 07: 2nd, 4th, 6th PDO 05: 10th, 10th, 9th 06: 1st, 2nd, 1st 07: 5th, 8th, 8th Wiff 04: 10th, 10th, 11th 06: 2nd, 1st, 11th 07: 12th, 12th, 11th Youse 03: 4th, 5th, 3rd 07: 8th, 7th, 10th Shep 06: 9th, 9th, 7th 07: 6th, 6th, 5th Jimbo 06: 4th, 4th, 4th 07: 10th, 10th, 12th That wraps up my preview of our competitors this year; it's time to take a look at the match-ups for Week 1! As it's early days with not a whole lot to be discussed, I'll keep it short. Ridic Team VS Come Previous encounters: Week 7 '06, Week 1 '07, Week 12 '07 Result: Come leads Shep 3-0 After shedding the name of Team Angle, Shep will be looking for a ridic performance against Come to break his 3-win streak. Jimbo's Calories VS Sexy Rexy Sea Heroes It's DK's very first match in elite fantasy football - will he come away with a win, or will Jimbo be too much for him? Ng's SuperTeam VS Tinfoil Hat Brigade Previous encounters: Week 1 '04, Week 12 '04, Week 8 '06, Week 10 '07 Result: Ngamer leads Wiff 3-1 Despite a last place finish in 2007, it is the only year thus far that Wiff has been able to grab a win against the SuperTeam. Will he come up with back-to-back wins, or will the SuperTeam live up to its name? Boss VS Daytona Wildcats Previous encounters: Week 7 '05, Week 9 '06, Week 3 '07, Week 14 '07 Result: QB leads Boss 4-0 History tells us that QB is the dominate one, but a new season brings new players, and new players bring a whole new story. Can Boss break his run of bad luck and defeat QB for the very first time? Michael Victory VS PDOs Perfect Players Previous encounters: Week 5 '07 Result: Youse leads PDO 1-0 Having only met once before, this is a fairly new rivalry. There's not much between these two teams on paper, so it's definitely up for grabs. wheat VS Killer Kangaroos Previous encounters: Week 10 '04, Week 11 '05, Week 9 '07 Result: Wheat leads Neo 2-1 Another match with little between these teams on paper. Both myself and wheat are looking to get our seasons off to a good start, so who can step up and take the win? Neo's Shoe-In of the Week Sexy Rexy Sea Heroes over Jimbo's Calories Perhaps it's my love for Romo or my hatred for Ronnie Brown speaking, but I think DK will get his debut season off to a great start with a comfortable win over Jimbo. I've got a couple other content ideas for my write-ups this season, but for now I'm all typed-out, as I'm sure you are sick of reading. I'll be back on Tuesday with my wrap-up for Week 1 of Fantasy action, along with some additional peeks at the progress of my Deadly Dropbears - a new fantasy team I'll be debuting in a different league this season. Until then, I'm happy to take requests, ideas and/or criticism with regards to these write-ups; catch me on AIM, e-mail or simply post here. I greatly look forward to watching many games with you all these year! Happy Footballing and Go Colts! *O/U on me giving up is 7 weeks. Send preds to QB! #I'm well aware that matchups in previous years give ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION WHATSOEVER of winner this time around. I'm not that silly, I know how Fantasy works. That said, I will continue to include it because I find it interesting and will make things a little more personal and exciting. Post by: rshepherd1000 on September 06, 2008, 05:13:00 am Post by: Neo on September 06, 2008, 11:25:00 am Time for a second, less-anticipated post from me before I go to bed. A couple months back, Ngamer pitched me the idea of putting together a simple fantasy football compilation; [14:51] Im Ngamer: one page I've been wanting to make it the all-time Elite Fantasy Football stats [14:51] Im Ngamer: it would have info like who won the championship, regular season, and regular season scoring titles [14:51] Im Ngamer: who has scored the most points all time, what everyone's overall records are I've had a text file of ideas sitting on my desktop since then, and I've only just this week got around to actually starting it. It's fairly basic stuff, but should be interesting to some, especially since (if I'm not misinformed) most fantasy data is not available to anyone who didn't compete in that season. As such, I bring you the first of many pages (in their very early stages, mind you) which I hope will be a centralized source for not only Fantasy Football info but other Elite contests (pick 'em, survival, etc.) as well. http://entertaininsomnia....tball/YearlyRankings.html (http://entertaininsomnia.com/pdiddy/football/YearlyRankings.html) First page is self-explanatory; the rankings from the last 5 years, sorted by final placings. Numbers in parenthesis indicate regular season placings. Data should be accurate as a triple-checked it, and I'll add more stuff (sort by points, etc.) in due time. http://entertaininsomnia....ball/AverageRankings.html (http://entertaininsomnia.com/pdiddy/football/AverageRankings.html) Average rankings consisting of all the competitors we've had over the last 5 years. As I've noted on the page, it's not intended to be an accurate representation of "who's the best" or anything like it. There are a number of things that change each year; scoring system, number of competitors, eliters involved, etc. - these all drastically alter the result. As such, this is purely for interests sake. In the future I'll be looking to implement some kind of weighted averages which take in to account all these factors, though I'm not quite sure how yet, so I'll get back to you on this one. http://entertaininsomnia....otball/TotalRankings.html (http://entertaininsomnia.com/pdiddy/football/TotalRankings.html) As the title suggests, it's just all the data from the yearly rankings totaled together. Even less of an indication of anything than Average Ranks, as it's mostly "the more teams, the better". If you can mange it, try to ignore the layout/colour scheme for now (unless, for some reason, you like it) as I threw it together quite quickly. I'll be improving it in the future. Lots of other ideas for pages, ranging from profiles for each of the competitors we've had to the aforementioned "weighted averages" to other stats QB has suggested like biggest/smallest wins, highest/lowest scoring matches, etc. I'll also be uploading other contest pages such as pick 'em and survival rankings from previous years, as they are no longer accessible on their respective sites. I'll also be uploading my weekly wrap-ups there as they'll probably be easier to read there than on these boards. Any comments, remarks, suggestions, criticisms are more than welcome, but as I said, this is in its very early stages so bare with me for the time being as I try and improve it all. Post by: Quiet Bol on September 06, 2008, 12:22:00 pm It's a ranking of Average Points Per Season but it's adjusted to account for the differences in scoring/league size. This ranking IS meant to be an accurate representation of player skill. Post by: DavidK5 on September 06, 2008, 12:31:00 pm Post by: Neo on September 06, 2008, 07:03:00 pm Post by: Neo on September 09, 2008, 09:34:00 am WEEK 1 RESULTS Come (67.25) defeats Ridic Team (52.03) League Prediction (2-0) 7 sacks, 2 INTs and a FF from Tenneesse, helped along by a pair of scores from Hines Ward put Come in a good position early - though Shep stayed with him thanks to some good performances from Favre, Bush and the Philadelphia D. He ultimately couldn't hold on though, as a score + yardage from Wayne on SNF allowed Come to repeat the outcome of last year's identical week 1 match-up. He's now 4-0 against Shep, who has lost his opening round game for the 3rd straight year. Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (42.10) defeats Jimbo's Calories (40.57) League Prediction (2-0) My shoe-in of the week turned out to be anything but, with Jimbo leading by just 1.02 at Sunday's close, after a 2-TD performance from Westbrook kept DK closer than it might have been. It would come down to a close battle between Jennings and Minnesota D on Monday Night Football, as Jimbo's thinness at WR meant an inactive player remained in his starting lineup. 91 receiving yards for Jennings against a defense that failed to cause a turn over for Jimbo proved to be the difference, with DK narrowly winning on debut by just 1.53 points. Even so, both players scored less than the rest of the league, so they'll be looking to improve in future weeks if they want to start in contention. Tinfoil Hat Brigade (50.68) defeats Ng's SuperTeam (48.70) League Prediction (0-2) In another game that came right down to the wire, Ngamer led by just .75 after Sunday's games, setting up a Culter VS Peterson fantasy match-up of epic proportions. AP set the bar with over a hundred yards + a score, but Cutler stepped up to the plate, throwing for 2 TDs and nearly 300 yards. The win marks just Wiff's second against the SuperTeam, who shockingly takes his first ever opening weekend loss in 6 seasons. D- Team (78.02) defeats Daytona Wildcats (46.42) League Prediction (0-3) QB couldn't have gotten off to a worse start, with his first round pick Tom Brady going down early with an ACL tear that will leave him out for the rest of the season. Touchdowns to Bowe and Jones couldn't salvage an otherwise rough week for QB, as Boss put up the highest total of the week via a 200-yard, 2-TD game from Turner and another three 10-point performances - at the expense of Burleson, who is, like Brady, now out for the season. Shockingly, it's Boss's very first win against the QB from 5 match-ups. Michael Victory (68.12) defeats PDOs Perfect Players (56.98) League Prediction (1-1) Youse's receiving core combined for just a worrying 2.6 points, but impressive games from McNabb, Gore, Rackers and Chicago more than made up for it, putting Youse ahead 16.25 at Sunday's end. Crosby dented the lead, though not nearly enough, allowing Youse to go 2-0 against PDO while grabbing second place in the league. Killer Kangaroos (67.25) defeats wheat (45.24) League Prediction (0-2) In the only game that saw a conclusion Sunday Night, I was able to jump out to an early lead thanks to a brilliant performance from Willie Parker, who managed to score more TDs against the Texans than in 15 games last season. Bearder notched up another two TDs for the Kangaroos, while wheat's last real hope in LT couldn't put points on the board against the Panthers. The win draws the series level at 2-2, and marks only the 2nd time in 5 years I've won on opening weekend. Total League Predictions: 5-8 Neo's Predictions: 3-3 Neo's Shoe-ins: 1-0 The wraps our games for Week 1, so let's take a look at the rankings; Did you notice? - Both Come and I scored 67.25 exactly - a rare occurence in a league with hundredths of a point. If only we'd been playing - our league has never seen a tied game. - Both our regular season (Ngamer) and playoff (QB) champs from last year lost their opening round matches. - As I was copying the table code for the rankings above, I found a job ad that Yahoo put there for web developers :x That wraps up Week 1 for the 2008 Season - I'll be back tomorrow with a preview of Week 2's action. See you then! --- Meanwhile, in some other league (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/452802)... The Deadly Dropbears (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/452802/5) were ahead by 30 at the half over Foolio (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/452802/7), who still had Jennings and AP to play on Monday Night Football. They came awfully close, putting up a combined 26 points, but he fell short of the Dropbears who move to 1-0 on the year, albeit with the lowest-scoring win of the day, to put me in 5th spot on the ladder. As always, comments, corrections, ideas, criticisms, death threats and so on are always welcome. Of course I already knew about some of the previews and the historic stuff you were going to be rolling out, but what I like most are these Rivalry records you're keeping track of. I agree, it makes it much more enjoyable to be able to see "oh wow, I'm 3-3 all time against QB? will have to win this week to take the all time lead!", just adds an extra dimensional to what's already very fun to watch.No idea what you're on about, but save your praises for the end of the season when I've proven myself properly! Preview coming shortly. Post by: Neo on September 09, 2008, 09:38:00 pm PREVIEWS Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (1-0) VS Come (1-0) Previous encounters: None! He said it himself; DK was very fortunate to get away with a win last week, as a match-up against any of the other 10 competitors in the league would have resulted in a loss. Never the less, it was a win, and he now faces much tougher competition against one of the league's most seasoned veterans. Come made short work of Shep in Week 1, as he looks to repeat an astonishing performance in 2007 that saw him win 6 games straight to open the season. We can't underestimate DK though, with Yahoo predicting just a .13 split between these two. Michael Victory (1-0) VS Ridic Team (0-1) Previous encounters: Week 8 '07, Consolation Semifinals '07 Result: All even at 1-1 Youse managed to oust Shep in the regular season last year, but Shep got his revenge where it mattered with a win in the playoffs. Shep will no doubt be looking to bounce back from his week 1 loss, but it won't be easy against a team that scored well last week despite a very poor result from his receivers. Some solid performances and Youse might just run away with this one. Jimbo's Calories (0-1) VS Tinfoil Hat Brigade (1-0) Previous encounters: Week 9 '06, Championship Semifinals '06, Week 2 '07, Week 13 '07 Result: Wiff leads Jimbo 3-1 All three of Wiff's wins against Jimbo have come in very close matches, but if last week's result is anything to go by, it might not be so close this time around. Jimbo sits at the bottom of the rankings with the poorest performance of week 1, but Wiff didn't look fantastic either in a narrow win over Ngamer. This one'll come donw to player match-ups as Jimbo tries to avoid his first ever 0-2 start. Ng's SuperTeam (0-1) VS Daytona Wildcats (0-1) Previous encounters: Some time in '03, Week 5 '04, Week 5 '05, Week 10 '06, Week 6 '07 Result: All even at 2-2 Week 2 sees the return of one of the league's oldest rivalries between our two most successful Fantasy Football teams. They've been battling since the league's inauguration, and in that time they've scored 2 wins each ('03 result can't be access on Yahoo!, so we'll forget it happened). Both players suffered shock losses in week 1, and an 0-2 start for either team would put them well behind expectations. Despite the loss of QB's first round draft pick in Tom Brady, there's almost nothing between these two teams on paper, with Yahoo predicting a 1-point difference. A big game that will see one of these juggernauts fall to 0-2 on the year. wheat (0-1) VS PDOs Perfect Players (0-1) Previous encounters: Week 3 '05, Week 14 '05, Week 1 '07, Week 12 '07 Result: Wheat leads PDO 4-0 In a match-up that's seen 4 regular season games in just 2 seasons, Wheat has dominated PDO thus far, chalking up a win in every game. In another game that will see the loser fall to 0-2, both teams will be desperate for a win, as neither have ever started off a season with double losses. History tells us it'll be tough for PDO to break the stranglehold on him, as does a number of favourable player match-ups for wheat in week 2. D- Team VS Killer Kangaroos (1-0) VS (1-0) Previous Encounters: Week 6 '05, 7th Place Game '05, Week 6 '06, Week 5 '07 Result: 2-2 Our last game of Week 2 sees the return of what I consider to be one of the league's most bitter rivalries as Boss and I are set to face off for the 5th time. We both looked impressive with big Week 1 wins, though Boss even moreso, who now sits firmly at the top of the ladder. Both teams look good on paper, so it might just come down to whoever has a breakout performance like Parker and Turner did last week. Neo's Shoe-In of the Week Michael Victory over Ridic Team A particularly tough week to pick a shoe-in, but I'm gonna have to go with Youse, whose team name I'm still trying to understand. He looked impressive last week despite a few sub-par performances, but I think he'll have even more success this week with a second straight win against Shep. It's going to be a huge week all around, with anywhere from 2 to 4 of our perfect teams falling to 1-1, with at least 2 of our winless teams falling even further back to 0-2. That wraps it up for my Week 2 Preview, hope you're enjoying these write-ups so far. Everyone should go ahead and predict the 6 match-ups on Yahoo, as it'll make future reviews a little more interesting. Neo out! Post by: wishiwasfamous on September 10, 2008, 03:12:00 am Quote wheat (0-1) VS PDOs Perfect Players (0-1)o rly? Post by: Neo on September 16, 2008, 10:38:00 am WEEK 2 RESULTS Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (90.94) defeats Come (71.18) League Prediction (3-2) Come found himself 18 points ahead at the close of Sunday's games, but it was from over. DK had both his first and second round draft picks left to play on Monday, and they proved their worth in style. Romo and Westbrook combined for a whopping 38.14 points, passing Come before half of the 2nd quarter had even elapsed. They went on to give DK the highest total of the week, thrusting him to 2nd on the ladder. Come suffers a disappointing loss and falls a spot to 5th. Ridic Team (69.71) defeats Michael Victory (55.77) League Prediction (3-2) Youse led by just over 3 points going in to Monday Night, but it was going to take a lot more than that as his lone McNabb went up against the trio of DeSean Jackson, David Akers and Philadelphia D. Despite a high scoring game, McNabb only scored a single touchdown, with Akers almost doubling that. Could have been even more points for Shep, had DeSean Jackson not began celebrations a step too early by dumping his would-be TD pass on the ground. My shoe-in turned in to a shoe-out as Shep takes it comfortably to get his first win, jumping to 8th on the ladder, while Youse falls 4 places to 6th. Tinfoil Hat Brigade (79.95) defeats Jimbo's Calories (64.95) League Prediction (5-0) Perhaps it is wrong of me to assume that Cutler was chosen in the same fashion that I took Vinateri, but Wiff's 10th round draft pick is most certainly paying off, as our league's 2nd most productive player led the charge against Jimbo. With help from Santana Moss and Clinton Portis, this is one result that was never in any doubt, after a big game from Folk could still only narrow the gap to 15.Wiff's 4th win against Jimbo takes him to 3rd on the ladder as one of only 3 undefeated teams, while Jimbo's second consecutive loss solidifies his place at the bottom of the ladder. Daytona Wildcats (76.47) defeats Ng's SuperTeam (68.73) League Prediction (3-3) A combined 4.3 points from his backs couldn't stop QB, as double TDs to both Scheffler and the Packers D gave him big points. He was all done before Monday, but like my Dropbears, Witten needed a pair of TDs to bring Jon back in contention. Despite some good yardage the scores never came in an otherwise close game. QB grabs a win to break the 2-2 deadlock, moving up to 7th in the progress, while Ng's disappointing loss sends him down to 10th. wheat (59.12) defeats PDOs Perfect Players (55.26) League Prediction (6-0) Warner, Kaeding and the Seahawks D all looked good for wheat, but he still only managed a tight, 4 point victory over PDO's 6-man squad. Despite a few days warning that the Texans@Ravens game had been delayed, PDO was unable to make it to a computer in time, resulting in 3 pointsless players. A damn shame for the 2006 champion, who almost certainly would have won with a full starting line-up. Nevertheless, wheat will go down as the winner as he grabs a ridiculous 5th straight win against PDO to move in to 9th, while some awful luck for PDO sends him to 11th. Killer Kangaroos (82.32) defeats Boss (79.34) League Prediction (5-0) I don't like to talk up my own games, but this one was absolutely incredible, with the leader changing many times throughout the weekend. Double Kitna-to-CJ TDs along with the Giants' domination of the Rams put me well in the clear after the 1pm games, but it was short-lived, with Warner hitting Boldin for 2 TDs and a whopping 140 yards. Despite a copious amount of yelling at the TV, Edwards and Parker did very little to comfort me, setting the game at an almost dead-heat going in to MNF. It would be a Bearder-Owens matchup to decide the winner, and two first half TDs to Owens all but put my out of contention, as I went to lunch defeated. To my surprise, I came back just 4 points down after a TD and some big yards from Bearder in the 3rd. Two runs from the 1-yard line was all it took for Bearder to score his second, as I narrowly jumped out in front and stayed there for the remainder of the game. An incredibly close game that brings back memories of Week 6 '06, where Boss edged me by just a few fractions of a point, after a Stat Correction two days post-game handed him the win. A lucky win for me sends me to the top of the ladder for just the second time in 5 seasons, while Boss falls to 4th, with a big points gap over his rivals. Firstly, and not very interesting, is the ranks sorted by points;
Not too shabby.... however, a far more interesting idea is one that was pitched to me by Youse. You see, our league favors touchdowns much more than most leagues. In fact, receivers and running backs must go for 120 yards to equal the 6 points you get for a TD, which is double what most leagues are. Many consider this a little lopsided. For interests sake, we thought it would be interesting to re-work the league based on Yahoo's default scoring. Now, as QB has pointed out to me, this is not really a fair ranking system as any decenter fantasy owner (ie; anyone but me) would draft players according to our own scoring and not the default. As such, like most of what I put together, this is purely for interests sake and not a substitute for the actual rankings. With that out of the way, let's see how the last two weeks would have gone down with the default scoring: Week One Killer Kangaroos (87) defeat Wheat (64) Come (85) defeats Ridic Team (75) Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (67) defeat Jimbo's Calories (61) Tinfoil Hat Brigade (68) defeat Ng's SuperTeam (64) Boss (104) defeats Daytona Wildcats (66) Michael Victory (86) defeats PDO's Perfect Players (74) Week Two Killer Kangaroos (109) defeat Boss (101) Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (119) defeat Come (93) Ridic Team (89) defeats Michael Victory (75) Tinfoil Hat Brigade (104) defeat Jimbo's Calories (71) Ng's SuperTeam (95) defeats Daytona Wildcats (94) Wheat (86) defeats PDO's Perfect Players (73) Games in italics represent games that had a different outcome with this scoring. Pretty interesting stuff! I should note that, due to the messy and rushed way I've calculated the above results, there is a slight chance of error... I'll look in to a more consistent method of calculating these results soon, but for now, I believe they're correct and should do nicely. For reference, you can see the changes in default scoring here: http://football.fantasysp...oo.com/f1/452802/settings (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/452802/settings) Here is how the actual rankings would look after two weeks with the above results:
And there we go! I'm sorry to say these took considerably longer to create than I would have hoped, so I'll be looking for a quicker method of making them in the mean time. 'Til then I'm sure you'll forgive me if these are fortnightly tables, or something. The actual wrap-up will always be my main priority. In any case, that does it for now. Comments, corrections etc etc, you know the deal. I should have the preview ready for tomorrow. Neo out! Post by: .. on September 24, 2008, 12:11:00 pm And I have it on good authority that Neo will be rating these quotes in his weekly wrap-ups, which he needs to continue doing. Post by: Neo on September 28, 2008, 11:50:00 am WEEK 3 RESULTS Tinfoil Hat Brigade (77.73) defeats Come (56.87) League Prediction (1-4) Come suffers his second consecutive loss after some lackluster performances from more than half his players. Yet another monster performance from Tennessee wasn't enough to stop Wiff, who had a solid day from almost all his players. His win makes him the only remaining undefeated team, while Come stays in the middle of the pack in 8th. Ridic Team (93.14) defeats Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (54.15) League Prediction (3-2) The result of this one wasn't in doubt for long, with superb performances from Favre, Addai, Bush and Philly D combining for what was easily the biggest score of the week. DK could do little to fight back with a number of disappointing performances, and suffers his first defeat. He falls in to 4th place, while Shep flies up the ranks in to 2nd. Jimbo's Calories (73.56) defeats Daytona Wildcats (72.56) League Prediction (2-4) This ridiculous matchup wouldn't have been anywhere near as close if not for a phenomenal performance from Ronnie Brown, who single handedly put up 5 touchdowns. It was just enough to upset QB, despite disappointing performances from the rest of his team. It was also just enough to get himself off the bottom of the ranks, improving a spot to 11th, while QB remains in 7th even with his second loss. PDOs Perfect Players (81.78) defeats Boss (48.76) League Prediction (1-3) Turner burned KC for 3 TDs and Prater kicked his way in to double digits, but that was about all Boss's players managed to do, with NE actually hurting his efforts. PDO on the other hand was explosive, with five players hitting double digits. He gets his first win in style, moving up to 9th, while Boss suffers his second straight loss and falls once again to 6th. wheat (69.15) defeats Michael Victory (64.42) League Prediction (3-2) This one came right down to the wire, with almost nothing separating these two teams going in to Monday Night Football. The night would see Sproles and Kaeding take on Jackson and Coles to decide the winner. Unluckily for Youse, he came up just a TD short, leading him to his second straight loss. Wheat does exactly the opposite and gets his second straight win, improving to 5th on the ladder. Ng's SuperTeam (60.71) defeats Killer Kangaroos (38.64) League Prediction (1-3) Not an awful lot to say here - was a truly awful performance on my part. Bearder managed a half-decent game on Sunday Night, but it was much too little much too late. The rest of my players did almost nothing, while Ngamer got away with a negative day from Roeth thanks to some other good performances across the board. Despite the win however, Jon falls in to last place, while I drop 2 spots to 3rd. This Week's Preds: Total League Predictions: 11-17 Neo's Predictions: 1-5 Neo's Shoe-ins: 0-1 Progressive Predictions: Total League Predictions: 41-32 Neo's Predictions: 7-11 Neo's Shoe-ins: 1-2 Here's how the rankings look after Week 3:
After just 3 weeks, everyone has managed to pick up a win, while we only have a single undefeated team. Looks like we may be witnessing the start of a very close season! Will get previews up soon if I can squeeze them in, but on the bright side, it'll be less than 48 hours 'til the next write-up. Neo out. Post by: Neo on October 05, 2008, 11:11:00 am After just 4 weeks we're already left with no winless or lossless teams, as a huge bye week was sure to shake things up a bit. Here's how the games went down: WEEK 4 RESULTS Come (56.18) defeats Daytona Wildcats (38.24) League Prediction (1-5) A big match-up here between two teams that have, would you believe, faced off somewhere in the playoffs all 5 seasons, including the 2004 Final. A huge bye week for everyone would reveal the true depth of many teams, and QB struggled to do much at all with a number of poor performances. Come was somewhat luckier with an always-good performance from the Tennessee D and a big day with the boot from Lindell, allowing him to improve to 2-2 on the year. QB suffers yet another unfortunate loss and falls in to dead last. Ridic Team (74.05) defeats Tinfoil Hat Brigade (59.62) League Prediction (1-4) A top of the table clash between 1 & 2 brings us another upset here as Shep manages to grab his 3rd successive win. An incredible 6-TD game from Favre meant this could have been a blowout, but some bad performances from his RBs kept it closer than it might have been. Despite doing alright across the board, Wiff failed to put up any stand-out performances, bringing his unbeaten streak to an unfortunate end. He drops two spots to 3rd, while Shep continues to climb the ladder, now sitting atop the rankings in 1st. Sexy Rexy Sea Heros (87.11) defeats Michael Victory (76.04) League Prediction (2-3) A high-scoring match sees DK return to his winning ways once again. Down by more than 10 points going in to MNF, DK manged over 20 points from Pittsburgh to snatch the win away from Youse, who loses a 3rd straight despite some superb performances from Coles and LJ. An especially painful loss for Youse - now in 10th place - given that he would have beaten any one of the other 10 teams in the league. Ng's SuperTeam (64.87) defeats PDOs Perfect Players (56.15) League Prediction (2-3) Not a whole lot to say here, as The Elite predicts wrong once again. Double-digit points from AP, Witten and Nedney helped Ngamer to put together a decent day, despite nothing from his Defense, while most of PDO's players just couldn't get in the endzone. Mason and Baltimore D narorwed the gap on MNF, but it wasn't enough, and PDO suffers yet another loss to put him in 11th. Ngamer's second straight win moves him in to 7th. Boss (67.61) defeats wheat (54.51) League Prediction (2-4) Four players under 2 points - one of which lost him points - meant this was going to be tough for Wheat to win. LT had a great day, but Boss was fairly good across the board, with Owens, Prater and Buffalo D all surpassing 10 points. Boss grabs a solid win after two disappointing losses to move in to 4th, while Wheat gets his second loss and falls to 8th. Jimbo's Calories (65.97) defeats Killer Kangaroos (35.09) League Prediction (3-3) Usually my season doesn't go quite so downhill until about half way through the year, but it seems I'm getting started early on something at least. Four players under 2 points and none over 10 helped me on the way to the lowest total of the week. Jimbo on the other hand put up a couple of solid performances, handing him the biggest win of the week. Jimbo wins his second straight, pushing him in to 6th, while my second straight loss drops me in to 9th with the fewest total points. The other two are 3-6 not out of it by any means. come and wiff are looking solid at 7-2 though neither are that safe yet. In other words who likes flipping coins? that's about the same thing as this fantasy season. Post by: Ngamer on November 11, 2008, 03:37:00 am Post by: Neo on November 11, 2008, 04:31:00 am ...better late than never? ;_; Post by: Neo on November 19, 2008, 03:02:00 am WEEK 11 RESULTS Come (66.01) defeats Youse (44.03) League Prediction (1-2) Yahoo predicted an incredibly tight result, but with 7 straight wins under his opponent's belt it was going to be very difficult for Youse to pull an upset here, and it proved to be just that. Come started strong with the very smart play of Broncos RB Hillis, who accounted for 2 touchdowns early. Gore managed to match that performance for Youse, but 4 Field Goals from Rackers accounted for more than every point. The rest of Come's line-up was more than enough secure him a comfortable win, as an 8th straight win moves him 2 games ahead of his nearest rival. He is now almost guaranteed to make the playoffs - a very different story from Youse, whose 3-8 record all but rules him out of the finals. Shep (72.77) defeats Jimbo (37.28) League Prediction (3-0) A good performance by Favre on TNF set the tone for the weekend, as Shep quite literally ran away with this one early. 2TDs and almost 300 yards from his backs could almost have taken on Jim's entire team, who could only find decent points in the GB D. It was Jim's 4th loss, who has spiraled out of control since his big 5-win streak. His poor points performance drops him down to 10th place. Despite being in 9th and 10th place respectively, they remain just one game out of the top 4 (and a ton of points, mind you), so a sweep of their final 3 games might give them a chance at the finals. DK (55.75) defeats Ngamer (42.44) League Prediction (2-1) Leon Washington proved superb for DK on TNF, and got him out to a big early lead. The rest of his team didn't come close to matching that performance, but it was still enough to take care of Ngamer, who, apart from Housh and Gostkowski, was very disappointing across the board. DK's win puts him in a similar situation to Shep and Jimbo, and will be looking to sweep his final 3 games to give himself a chance. Ngamer's loss pulls him back in to the 6-5 pack and will now have to fight for the finals. Boss (62.83) defeats Wiff (41.72) League Prediction (2-1) Wiff, like Jimbo, seems to be spiraling out of control, as he suffers his 3rd straight defeated. 2 second-half TDs by MJD was the only significant performance on Wiff's team, and it wasn't nearly enough to take on Boss, who got solid performances from Manning, Turner and the Miami D. A third straight win for Boss keeps him in the top 4, now just one game from Wiff. QB (65.80) defeats Wheat (65.05) League Prediction (1-4) Well, I'm pretty sure you can put this down as the second most bullshit fantasy victory in history, right after Boss's Tuesday stat-correction defeat of yours truly. Not only did Wheat fall just 16 yards short of a victory, but his kicker was BENCHED right before the game! Not much else to say here, except that this was a ridiculously close game that Wheat should have won. His ridic loss breaks his 3-win streak and forces him in to needing a sweep of his last 3 games. QB's big win keeps him in 3rd, and is looking good for the playoffs with his nice points total. Neo (80.05) defeats PDO (68.74) League Prediction (2-1) Going up against the league's worst should have been a breeze for me, but PDO was to determined to put up a fight, posting the 3rd highest total of the week. Rodgers and Crosby combined early for great numbers, but three touchdowns and nearly 250 yards from my two backs boosted my team nicely. A big performance from the Giants D helped me on the way to the biggest points total of the week, as my 3rd straight win pushes me up the ranks once more, now just one spot out of the top 4. PDO's 8th loss of the season removes any hope of playoff contention. This week's predictions: 11-9 Here's how the rankings look after Week 11:
I'll be back tomorrow with a look at both next week's games and the overall playoff picture. Stay tuned! Post by: Ngamer on November 20, 2008, 12:12:00 am Post by: Neo on November 21, 2008, 01:32:00 am WEEK 12 PREVIEWS ***Game of the Week #1 *** QB (6-5) vs Boss (6-5) A big match-up here that will go a long way towards deciding who makes the playoffs, as both teams sit in 3rd and 4th respectively. The winner will make a giant leap to confirming a decent playoff spot, while the loser will be faced with a very difficult task of making the playoffs at all. Yahoo predicts a Boss win, and although he dominated QB in their Week 1 match-up, I'm going to give the slight edge to QB, who always seems to pull through even when the odds are against him. ***Game of the Week #2 *** Wiff (7-4) vs Ngamer (6-5) Yet another important game here with big playoff ramifications. Wiff currently sits in 2nd place, just 1 game ahead of the four 6-5ers, whilst Ngamer sits at the back of those four in 6th position. A win for him would keep him very much in the top-4 hunt, while a loss would severely cripple him. Wiff, on the other hand, is looking good for the playoffs, and a win here would very likely confirm a place. He won an extremely close battle by just 2 points in their Week 1 match-up, but I think Ngamer will turn the tables and win this one convincingly. Come (9-2) vs Shep (5-6) With a playoff spot all but wrapped up for Come, he now has the opportunity to solidify the #1 seeding, destroying Shep's very slim playoff hopes in the process. Come won their initial meet by a comfortable 15 points, but with Shep's rookie RBs tearing it up, this one might be a lot closer. Even so, it's hard to pick against Come's incredible 8-wins-in-a-row, so I see him making it 9 in a row here. DK (5-6) vs Jimbo (5-6) Not the hottest of games, but an important one nonetheless. The winner will hang on to their (very) slim playoff chance, while the loser will be out of it completely. Week 1 saw an incredibly tight finish, with DK taking it by less than 2 points. This one looks to be equally as tight, but I'll give the edge to Sea Heros. Neo (6-5) vs Wheat (5-6) After a disappointing mid-season slump, 3 straight wins has me back in the playoff race. I'll have my hands full here against Wheat, however, as he fights desperately for a playoff spot after a horrific loss last week. Although I won comfortably by 20+ points in our first meeting, Yahoo has less than a point separating us, and it may very well come down to just that kind of score. Consider this a "must win" for both teams. ***Toilet Bowl*** PDO (3-5) vs Youse (3-5) I know we generally assign this title to the final Consolidation Playoffs game, but I couldn't pass it up here. With no chance at making the playoffs whatsoever, these teams are now fighting to decide the wooden spoon. Youse came away with the win in Week 1, and I think he'll do the same here. Now for something a little different; QB pitched me the question a few days ago about the likelihood of each team making the playoffs. This is very difficult to answer, given that each team has 3 matches left to play and taking points in to consideration is (as I see it) ridiculously difficult, so here's the best I could come up with (maybe Octo/Ng or anyone else with a good stats mind can see another way?); I wrote a quick program (with big help from Infil <3) that generates all 2^18 (that's over 216,000) possible results for the final 18 games - then with each set, I apply the wins/losses to our current rankings, take the top 4 and increase the tally of those four teams by 1. So basically, I figure out how often each team will make the playoffs given these 2^18 scenarios, and determine a percentage from it. Here are those numbers: Come - 100% Wiff - 87.66% QB - 59.01% Boss - 54.26% Neo - 42.54% Ngamer - 35.40% Wheat - 10.15% Jimbo - 4.80% DK - 3.09% Shep - 3.09% Youse - 0% PDO - 0% If it wasn't obvious already, these numbers are highly imperfect, as this method has two major flaws (one moreso than the other): 1. The outcome of each match is assumed to be a coin flip. - That is to say, a 50-50 chance of each team winning. This isn't the case, as we can say based on past performances that QB/Come would be more likely to win a game against, say, PDO. However, given the huge number of factors (individual player match-ups, complete luck, etc), it's much safer (and easier) to put it at 50-50, and it produces good enough results. 2. A team's current total points is used as the tiebreaker. - This is the big one. For instance, if Ngamer and I have the same record, I will always make the playoffs ahead of him because I have more points right now. Come (mathematically) isn't a 100% lock to make the playoffs, and he could lose all 3 matches, have a number of 6-5 teams sweep their remaining 3 matches AND catch up to him in points, which would knock him out - though there is little chance of this happening, given the match-ups that are actually going to take place. In summary; points totals are going to change and it will very likely change who makes the playoffs. All that aside, I think the numbers are interesting enough, so take them as you will! Post by: Neo on November 26, 2008, 02:53:00 am WEEK 12 RESULTS ***Game of the Week #1 *** Boss (96.88) defeats QB (66.98) League Prediction (2-4) This looked like it would be a pretty close match-up, but Boss completely ran away with it. Turner put up 4 TDs, Hightower another 2 and Owens put up over 200 yards to give Boss the highest points total of the week. The win moves him in to 2nd place on the ladder, now only 3 points behind QB in total points. QB's loss moves him down to 6th position, and will now have to win both his final games to make the playoffs. ***Game of the Week #2 *** Ngamer (64.91) defeats Wiff (35.93) League Prediction (6-1) My prediction of a comfortable win for Ngamer turned out to be quite accurate, as he takes this one by a cool 30 points. Despite a few disappointing performances, Rivers, AP, Gostkowski and the Tampa Bay D combined to give Ng the majority of his points. It was a whole other story for Wiff however, as none of his players could even reach double digits. His 4th straight loss means it will now be a challenge for him to even make the playoffs, let alone be a strong contender. Ngamer will now face off against QB in a knock-out bout to decide which of the two will contest the playoffs. Come (77.10) defeats Shep (23.88) League Prediction (4-1) I'm sure most of us saw this coming, but probably not like this! 3 TDs to Moss set the tone for Come's team, as his team combined for a respectable total. It was the complete opposite for Shep however as 8 of his 9 players couldn't even surpass 6 points. His total is the lowest of any team this season, and marks a disappointing end to his season. Come's big win, coupled with Wiff's loss, not only guarantees him a place in the final, but also the #1 seeding. Jimbo (60.08) defeats DK (60.02) League Prediction (0-5) Six one-hundredths. 1.2 yards. Says it all, really. DK's absurd loss knocks him out of playoff contention, while Jimbo's equally absurd win gives him a slim chance, should he manage to win his final two games. Neo (85.01) defeats Wheat (49.94) League Prediction (4-2) Wheat would like to put this one down to bad luck, what with another of his Giants being benched right before the game and all, but in reality this one was always going my way - 2 TDs and over a hundred yards to Moore on MNF still resulted in more than a 35-point gap. Another great prediction by Come had me start Pennington right before game time, and it paid off with 4 big TDs. Williams and Longwell also chipped in to give me a solid points total, lifting me to 3rd in the rankings. Wheat's second straight loss knocks him out of playoff contention, putting to rest a season he seems to want to forget in a hurry. ***Toilet Bowl*** PDO (89.46) defeats Youse (82.80) League Prediction (2-3) This must have been played in one of those fancy Japanese toilets, because it turned out to be one of the best games this week! A very high-scoring affair saw this one come down to a battle of the QBs on Monday Night Football, and it was pretty close there as well, with Brees out-throwing Rodgers by just 3 (fantasy) points. It wasn't good enough for Youse though, as PDO snatched the win away, thanks in large part to the Baltimore D (who just happened to outscore Shep's *entire team*). Although the playoffs were out of the question for both these teams, it was still a good day by both, and they could still fight their way out of the bottom 2, if nothing else. My predictions: 3-3 League predictions: 18-16 Here's how the rankings look with just two weeks left in the regular season: I'll be back in a day or two with a look at Week 12's match-ups, along with another look at possible playoff scenarios. Post by: Neo on November 26, 2008, 08:35:00 am WEEK 13 PREVIEWS ***Game of the Week #1 *** Neo (7-5) vs Boss (7-5) 7-5 and 4 wins on trot for each, but only one is going to walk away with a much-needed win in this battle of our 2nd and 3rd ranked teams. I edged a 2.98 point win against Boss in week 2 of the season, but a lot has changed since then, and the stakes are much higher. A decent points total and the winner might just lock themselves a playoff spot, while the loser will have to play it tough one more week. Boss has looked much stronger than I in recent weeks, so I give him the advantage in this one. ***Game of the Week #2 *** Ngamer (7-5) vs QB (6-6) If ever there was a must-win match for two teams, this is it. Both sit just outside the top 4, in 5th and 6th respectively, and a loss for either will be potentially fatal. QB won their first match by just 8 points, and he'll be looking for an even better result here. I predict another win for QB, but it really could go either way. Come (10-2) vs DK (5-7) A fairly meaningless game here, as Come has wrapped up both the playoffs and the #1 seed, while DK is out of the playoff race altogether. Even so, DK is one of just two teams who've managed to beat Come this season, so it'll be interesting to watch if nothing else. Despite the result of the last game, 9 straight wins makes Come impossible to pick against. Shep (5-7) vs Youse (3-9) Speaking of meaningless games, this one has it in spades! With the playoffs very much out of the question for both teams, it's now a fight to stay off the bottom of the ladder. Shep will be looking to bounce back from a truly dreadful showing last week, but should Youse duplicate last week's strong performance, he could take this one by a big margin. Wiff (7-5) vs Jimbo (6-6) For two teams that are still in the playoff hunt, I'm finding it hard to be excited about this match-up. Wiff has lost 4 games in a row, while Jimbo sits 2nd last in points. Nevertheless, it'll help determine who makes the playoffs, so I suppose everyone should keep an eye on it! Jimbo always seems to be able to steal wins somehow, but I'm backing Wiff here anyway. PDO (4-8) vs Wheat (5-7) Another meaningless game, as both teams have been knocked out of the playoffs. I'll back Wheat here, but as always, this could go either way. Finally, nobody seemed to be interested in this last time, but I'll post it again anyway; updated playoff predictions based on some shitty method of calculation! Guaranteed Playoffs Come: 100% Playoff Race Boss: 79.69% Neo: 71.09% Wiff: 65.62% Ngamer: 48.44% QB: 25.78% Jimbo: 9.38% Better Luck Next Year Wheat: 0% DK: 0% Shep: 0% PDO: 0% Youse % See you next week! Post by: DavidK5 on November 26, 2008, 07:28:00 pm (Luck luck luck luck luck luck) Post by: wheatrich on November 26, 2008, 07:36:00 pm Post by: Neo on November 26, 2008, 07:51:00 pm But yes, it's an awfully specific scenario you'd need. Post by: Jimbo on November 27, 2008, 02:09:00 am Post by: Neo on December 02, 2008, 09:09:00 am Week 13 Results *** Game of the Week #1 *** Neo (72.22) defeats Boss (46.73) League Prediction (1-2) A week after Turner torched QB with 4 TDs, Williams has managed to do the same here to Boss. He stacked on 28 points to make up for lackluster performances from my QB and WRs. Boss, on the other hand, couldn't get an ounce of luck, as Manning put up a fraction-of-a-point game and his RBs failed to put up a single score. The loss puts to rest Boss's 4-game winning streak, while my 5th straight win pushes me in to 2nd place with just a week left in the regular season. ***Game of the Week #2 *** QB (77.75) defeats Ngamer (54.07) League Prediction (3-1) White, AP and Witten combined for over 40 points, but Ngamer couldn't muster any more, with his QB, WRs and Defense stumbling when he needed it most. QB had somewhat better fortunes, wih Frerotte, Jones, Folk and Dallas D all exceeding 10 points. His wins thrusts him back in 4th place, hot in the playoff race, while Ngamer's loss is going to make it very difficult for him to make the top 4 after next week. DK(105.43) defeats Come (58.79) League Prediction (1-2) BOOM! DK manages to make it a sweep of Come in both their matches, and he does this one in style. Romo threw for 3, Westbrook ran for 4, Jennings and Holmes each caught one and Pittsburgh D put up huge points, which all combined to give DK the first 100 point performance of the year. It was almost enough to double to Come's total, who like many other eliters, found his players struggling to find the endzone. Luckily for him, he's already wrapped up the first seed, and unfortunately for DK he's already out of the playoff hunt - still, he can at least take solace in the fact he's beaten the regular season winner twice this year! Shep (73.31) defeats Youse (54.61) League Prediction (1-2) Shep held on to a 10-point lead going in to SNF, but the 12th 99-yard TD pass in history - this one to Berrian - propelled Youse to a narrow 2 point lead. It didn't last long, though, as Slaton blew this one open on MNF, gaining over 180 yards and 2 TDs. Though he is well out of the playoffs, the win at least gives Shep a shot of the consolation finals, while Youse is given just one more chance to get out of last place. Wiff (55.46) defeats Jimbo (42.25) League Prediction (3-1) After 4 losses, Wiff finally manages to turn his fortunes around and grab a win - and just in time too, as he now has a good chance to hang on until the playoffs. He can thank Bironas for the win, who managed to kick for 21 points. Not a great day for Jimbo though, as none of his players could even hit double digits, and short of a miracle is now out of the playoff race. Wheat (84.08) defeats PDO (66.96) League Prediction (4-0) Warner, Fitzgerald and Chris Johnson put up big numbers, and the rest of his team more than overcame a negative performance from his Arizona D. Rodgers, Crosby and Baltimore D put up big numbers, but the rest of his team sure didn't, as none could surpass 5 points. Like Shep and DK, Wheat is another winner that is already out of the playoffs, but now gives himself a good shot at the consolation playoffs. Here are the rankings with just one week left in the season:
Instead of waiting for my weekly preview, we're going to have a look at the playoffs now - no need for any crazy simulations this week, because with just one week left, we can pretty much determine it ourselves! Come Has secured not only a playoff spot, but also the first seed. Neo Will *NOT* make the playoffs in the following situations: - Ngamer AND Wiff AND QB AND Boss *win*, OR - Ngamer wins and gains 44.52 points on Neo AND 2 of Wiff, QB and Boss win, OR - Ngamer, QB and Boss win, AND Wiff gains 36.15 points on Neo (Neo surpassing QB OR Boss in points will remove some of these situations) Wiff Will make the playoffs in the following situations: - A win over Come - Ngamer and QB OR Boss lose - Ngamer wins but does not gain 8.58 on Wiff (Wiff gaining 36.15 points on Neo will allow for more situations) QB Will make the playoffs in the following situations: - QB wins AND Neo OR Wiff lose - QB wins AND Boss does not gain 33.83 on him with a win over PDO - Boss AND Ngamer lose (Neo gaining 62.43 on QB will remove some situations) Boss - Boss wins AND Neo OR Wiff OR QB lose - Neo gains 28.59 on Boss, AND Wiff OR QB lose Ngamer - Ngamer wins AND Boss AND QB lose - Ngamer wins and gains 8.58 on Wiff, Wiff loses AND QB OR Boss lose DK, Wheat, Jimbo, Shep - QB AND Boss AND Ngamer lose, AND they gain 71.68, 72.76, 144.35 or 149.22 points on QB respectively. (This isn't going to happen, trust me) NB: These scenarios may be off slightly, as I did them entirely in my head. Give me a break! Well done, sir. Post by: wheatrich on December 22, 2008, 07:19:00 pm Congrats come--despite having some god awful RB's you had the best team in the league so well deserved and well done. Post by: .. on December 23, 2008, 08:10:00 am Anyone want to give input on changes we should make for next year? I didn't mind the 4/TD and 1/INT for QBs, but I know some people disliked it. I'm not sold on 10yd/pt on rushing/receiving though, which had been suggested at some point. TDs seem undervalued there, but overvalued at 20yd/pt. 15 would be just silly though. Post by: rshepherd1000 on December 23, 2008, 11:47:00 am Also would like a freeze on trading after the games, particularly in the first few weeks of the season, so that I have a chance to pick people up Post by: Jimbo on December 23, 2008, 01:08:00 pm Post by: youseinthehouse on December 23, 2008, 08:37:00 pm TDs are way too overvalued with yards at 20/pt. I've found the 10/pt almost a perfect fit in all the other leagues I've played the past couple of years. TDs worth the same as 60 yards (for non QBs) is NOT undervaluing them. TDs worth 120 yards is just ridiculous. I'm fine with 4/TD for QBs, but I still like -2/INT rather than -1. Also, I would definitely remove kickers entirely, but I realize I'd be in the minority on this revolutionary suggestion. If offensive points are NOT upgraded (i.e. same yardage values kept), then I'd definitely scale back the defensive points handed out. Post by: Ngamer on December 24, 2008, 01:55:00 am Hmm, a 2.00 pt loss to wiff right off the bat in W1. Good thing I was about to get even by pounding him in W12! Then a 4.18 loss to Boss in W6, that hurts. Two wins after that, and... UGH, 0.57 defeat to Come in W9. That stings almost as bad as the... 0.50 loss to Neo in W14! Wow, looking this over, all 8 of my wins this year came by margins of over 10 points, and most of them could fairly be described as blowouts. But when it really mattered, in games decided by 11 or fewer points, the Superteam was... 0-5. Bah, talk about disappointing. I can't get around how closely the Superteam's season resembled the Packers'. All the pieces in place to make a nice run, but stuck with a complete inability to finish off opponents and close out close games. (Except that the Pack is actually 0-8 in games that were within 8 points in the final five minutes.) --- Enough rambling though. For next year, I'd be okay with raising the yardage points, but don't feel too strongly about that either way. One thing I would like to look into would be (as QB has suggested in the past) adding a new position for a dedicated kick returner. Also, I'd be opposed to any extra defensive stuff (for instance everyone drafting one linebacker or something). Post by: wishiwasfamous on December 24, 2008, 02:24:00 pm I like the way the league was this season, TDs are more important than high rushing totals. I'd also like to see it go back to 6/-2 for QB TDs/Ints, because a Touchdown is a touchdown, pure and simple. This puts more value on not picking a crap QB, after all, they're being used far more than any other player on the field all the time. QB points should natually produce more points than a star WR or RB. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
