Title: 2008 NFL Picks, Discussion, and Betting Topic
Post by: Ngamer on August 28, 2008, 12:41:00 am
8 years later, and we're still going strong! With the first game of the season only a week away now, it's time to get those opening weekend picks set. Good luck to everyone once again this season!

* What is it? Pigskin Pick'Em, a very simple competition we run from ESPN every year where you just pick which NFL team you expect to win each week. Nothing complicated here- don't worry about the spread or the over/under or player performances like in Fantasy; just click your expected winners.

* But I'm no football expert! No need to be one- just join for fun and see how you're able to do. A non-expert (and many times a non-American!) is generally in the running for the overall win every year, so this season probably won't be an exception.

Start here: http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin/frontpage (http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin/frontpage)

Sign in and make your Week One picks. Then say Join a Gro
up, you want to search for
The NFL Elite
(as always, our password is just "elite")

Bam, you're all set!

Two important announcements. First, this year's overall champion will be taking home a pretty nice prize package:

Ultimate Gaming Pack: A Circuit City gift card valued at $1,100 (which can be redeemed for an HDTV), an Xbox 360 gaming system, and a suite of four (4) games. (Estimated Value: $1,500.00)

The second place finisher gets something pretty cool as well.

Replica NFL jersey and helmet from the pro team of winner's choosing and an autographed football. (Estimated Value: $250.00)

And just for having the best picks of the week you'll get a hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap. We came within just a couple points of someone (someone named Matt) winning this just last season, so maybe this time it will be you!

Secondly, I'm proud to announce that Shep will be returning as our NFL picks analyst this season, posting full results along with his always-hilarious commentary after each week of Pick'Em and Spread action is completed.

Here's to another exciting season!

Also, let's get things off on the right foot by hearing everyone's prediction for who will play in and win this year's Superbowl!

These are always fun to look back on and have a good laugh about at the end of the season.

QB's pick rules. It's my pick, too, simply because I cannot deny the truth. I don't care what you all say about that.

Although, Wheat, I actually had a dream that SF knocked Eagles out of the playoffs just last night! My one niners fan friend was all over me about it.

Reminder: the first game of the season is Thursday night! Be sure to join any of the above leagues that interest you before that time!

(Actually missing the ESPN or Spread wouldn't be a big deal, should only set you back 1 win, but Survival surely locks once that first game kicks off, so make that a priority.)

Post by: mikerspd on September 02, 2008, 10:48:00 pm
Actually, I believe Survival just locks out the teams that have already played, so if you want to pick either the Redskins or the Giants, you would have to do it by Thursday before kickoff.  However, the other teams should all be available up until their respective kickoffs (I believe).  I think this because I was forced to pick a shitty team on a Monday night (I'd picked the favorite already) because I failed to make a pick prior to that. *tear*

QB's 2008 NFL Bets

So it's looking like this'll be it for this year:

Dallas Cowboys UNDER 10.5 wins - Risked $500 to win $650
Oakland Raiders UNDER 6 wins - Risked $500 to win $550
Green Bay Packers OVER 8 wins - Risked $202.50 to win $150
Philadelphia Eagles OVER 8.5 wins - Risked $175 to win $100
Detroit Lions UNDER 6.5 wins - Risked $110 to win $100
Tampa Bay Buccaneers OVER 8 wins - Risked $105 to win $75
Seattle Seahawks OVER 8.5 wins - Risked $87.50 to win $50
Baltimore Ravens OVER 6 wins - Risked $58 to win $40

Justin Tuck UNDER 12.5 sacks - Risked $120 to win $100
Wes Welker UNDER 1050 yards receiving - Risked $80 to win $64
Wes Welker UNDER 8 receiving TDs - Risked $70 to win $50
Steve Slaton OVER 425 rushing yards - Risked $62.50 to win $50
Earnest Graham OVER 1000 rushing yards - Risked $57.50 to win $50
Chester Taylor OVER 550 rushing yards - Risked $55 to win $50
Brian Urlacher UNDER 6.5 sacks + ints - Risked $50 to win $50

Clinton Portis to lead NFL in rushing yards - Risked $10 to win $500
DeSean Jackson to win Offensive Rookie of the Year - Risked $10 to win $250
Aaron Schobel to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $200
Kyle Vanden Bosch to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $100
Trent Cole to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $90

These next 3 were placed months ago but they'll soon be resolved:

Adam "Pacman" Jones will be reinstated and will play in week 1, YES - Risked $250 to win $100
Kansas City to be the first team to defeat New England (week 1) - Risked $50 to win $700
Miami to be the first team to defeat New England (week 3) - Risked $100 to win $3500

And lastly, bets with Jimbo:

Cleveland UNDER 8 wins - Risked $100 to win $100
Donovan McNabb to accrue more rushing + passing TDs than Aaron Rodgers - Risked $100 to win $100

Now let's get this season underway!

Edit - got another $115 back from some no-actioned baseball bet so I threw some more on Dallas and added a Baltimore bet
---

Oh yeah, I have an avatar bet again, with DK this year. He wants to stick me with this Hellmuth nonsense for another year!

If the Eagles win the NFC East, I pick his avatar for the next year. If the Cowboys win the NFC East, he picks mine. Any other result means...Nothing!
---

Jimbo's 2008 NFL Bets

So QB and I have an Avatar vs Sig bet, just a basic bet of whoever has the better record, Green Bay or Philadelphia.

Total money risked: $685.

1. Jimbo vs QB for $100 that Aaron Rodgers will have more passing/rushing TDs than Donovan McNabb. Both QBs MUST start game one. After that, bet cannot be voided.
2. Jimbo vs Drag that says Green Bay will beat Minnesota straight up week 1 on Monday Night Football. I am risking $100 and Drag is risking $70.
3. Jimbo vs Wheat that says Reggie Wayne will beat Randy Moss in fantasy points this year. (10 yards a point, 6 points per touchdown) My $90 vs wheat's $100.
4. Jimbo vs Drag that says Jason Witten will beat Antonio Gates in fantasy points (10 yards a point, 6 per touchdown). I risk $95 on Witten to Drag's $100 on Gates.
5. Jimbo vs Wheat for $100 that says Cleveland will finish 9-7 or better, wheat taking a 7-9 or worse season. 8-8 is a push.
6. Jimbo vs Youse for $100 that sets the same identical criteria as Jimbo vs QB invovling Rodgers/McNabb. Both QBs have to be starters in week one however.
7. Jimvo vs QB for $100 that says Cleveland will finish 9-7 or better, QB taking a 7-9 or worse season. 8-8 is a push.

To start off the season, Jimbo is putting up 100 (on the pack) to my 70 (on the vikes) on the pack @ vikes to start off the season.

The '08 season is officially upon us, so it's time to get serious.  All NFL discussion has been compressed to this one topic to keep things easier to follow (except for course for Fantasy).  Remember that Survival has locked, but you can still join the Pigskin or Spread pools if you would like.

Also feel free to get in your Superbowl pred if you haven't done so yet!

Survival Week 1: Phi and Pit seem to be the best valued picks in this round, but aren't as sure-fire as NE, colts and the chargers. I can't blame anybody for picking the big three this week, especially NE and the chargers with some very easy games, however I prefer to seize any opportunity to use a mid-card team as a moderate favorite and hang on to the big guns for later in the season (assuming you make it..)

wheat's week 1 main bet is a... WONG teaser

Philadelphia -1.5 (love this)

Minnesota +8 (ugh)

San Francisco (really ugh) +8

hate the last two but there wasn't another wongable game so here we go. wheat is risking $25 to win $45 on this particular wong. (prop bets didn't leave me with much $ there)

(in case you don't know what a wong is you pick 3 or whatever teams and get the points pushed back by 6--it was shown whatever years ago that any time you can cross the 3 and the 7=profit! right about when I heard of this so did the books and now most lines are adjusted to -3 +3 to make me a sad panda thus any line with 1.5-2.5 you move up and any line with 7.5-8.5 you moved down)

I might take some on Chicago ML later as my rule after the superbowl is now to always bet against the injured QB with a big ML.

I'm quickly changing my tune about Yahoo's pick system. The new system is horrible. I was never able to edit my picks after initially making them a few days ago. I'm not sure if that was the case for everybody, or it had to do with my OS (I'd tried it on two different web browsers with no luck). Also, I picked KC +16.5 when that line was available, and didn't get credit for it. I guess only the final line they post counts? Either way, I'd have changed it to NE -0 if I could have, but there was no way for me to edit my picks after the fact. On top of that I can't, for the life of me, figure out why the line was Offed. It's like they were psychic about it. Also it says I didn't pick EITHER side for NYJ/MIA when I definitely did. I just don't understand what's going on with it this year. It doesn't matter too too much, as my picks, as always, are terrible anyway.

Hope you took a bunch on that Chi ML, Wheatrich!

Happy about Green Bay's win, so far +$90 with everyone I've bet with. McNabb has a 1 TD advantage over Rodgers and I'm losing my Cleveland/TE/WR bets so far, but the season is very long!

^^ it says I didn't pick NJY/MIA also, though I know I did

And I, too, hate their new pick system. It should NOT lock so early, ffs. FYI, if they change the line after you make your pick, you're stuck with it. That's how it was last year, too. It makes for a more "fair" scoring system, when comparing multiple users. Obviously if you look at it in terms of betting, that system is simply terrible, as if the line changes, your pick might too obviously.

I just wasn't sure because I didn't do a spread pickem last year (I think), just a regular on Yahoo. There, I was able to edit my picks at any time up to 5 mins before kickoff. This year, I'm in a Spread and a Standard at Y!, and couldn't edit either after the initial picks. Weird. And stupid.

Anyways, I put 5 bucks on a Super Bowl pinata just for fun (Every team 25 to 1), and got Dallas. I was so thrilled with getting a decent team I did it twice more with 2$ on Dallas again, then 1$ on Indy. I got a little cocky and did it for 1 more dollar on St. Louis. Then I quit. So, if I don't kill myself after Dallas potentially wins this year's Super Bowl, I'll earn a cool sum.

Screw Ryan Grant for basically giving Rodgers a QB sneak with his extreme lack of breakaway speed. Still up 3-2 and feeling good looking at McNabb's October and November schedules.

(If he makes it)

I don't know what your problem was, but I was able to change my picks just fine. I also took KC +16.5 and I wish the line would've stayed there, but when the line went off the board, I switched successfully to NE.

They did, however, lock the Sunday and Monday night games after the first wave of games started.

I can't imagine how much fun it would be for Cassell to make a phone call to Leinart this week. Who in college football would've ever thought that would be the order of starter-backup in the NFL? (that and how much would Tennessee and Arizona want a do over to select Cutler right now? loooooool) Texans passing on both Reggie Bush and Vince Young for Mario Williams--how does this look now!. (remember the titans young vs leinart debate--never mind lol)

fun to go back into the past for these things (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

I tried to change my Spread picks on Saturday night, but they'd all been locked down. I assumed it was because everything locked at once when the Thursday night game kicked off? So QB being able to edit up to the last minute makes no sense... Oh well!

Eh, I think the Pats line went down on Tuesday so I could have changed it anytime between then and Thursday. I thought I had changed them after Thursday, but maybe that was only the non-spread picks. And speaking of the non-spread picks, I think this week is surely the hardest set of picks I've ever seen.

Opening week tends to be pretty straightforward to pick and the Elite did very well as a whole, with over half of the group picking 10 or more correct which was an 83.7 percentile.

Disappointing as always to see wheat incapable of putting his money where his mouth is and picking with us. Great to see Jimbo not participating so the overall Elite average isnt dragged down.

Elite Pickem - Win Table

Just the one week. Just the one winner

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Skins 8 Giants 16 - I think Giants were the obvious pick here despite the fact that the only thing they had going for them at the end of last season deteriorated greatly over the past few months due to injury and retirement. That being said the game was actually a lot closer than it appeared to be. The Giants did not have a sack after the first play of the game, did not score a td after the first drive of the game, did not score ANY points after the first half of the game, yet they were able to win because the skins were somehow worse. Yes the play calling was terrible toward the end of the game, but had the skins not fallen victim to some horrendous officiating earlier when brandon jacobs was not flagged for a personal foul that would have left 3rd and 20 on their td drive and santana moss not ruled down incorrectly later, the skins could have been driving at the end for a fg to win the game. And when you consider how POORLY washington played generally there is only one conclusion - the giants look pretty horrible still.

Lions 23 Falcs 3 - lol preseason. Im very shocked that the falcs only had 3 picks here because they seemed to be the smart choice. The lions are just a terrible terrible team. That doesnt make Atlanta great though. I still dont expect them to win many games this year, but it sure helps if you are a rookie to begin your career throwing against that secondary. Ryan did look great though so he should fare ok even against tougher opposition. Cue massive Michael Turner overating by all across the world.

Seagiantromos 15 Bills 13 - Well I had the Bills for some odd reason. That was definitely an incorrect pick by me and I freely admit a suckout. I dont particularly mind the Bills this year, they have a lot of things going for them and if they stay mainly injury free have a real shot at a wild card. However Seattle are still a very good team that have just fallen victim to a horrendous volume of injuries and any time you concede two (basically three) special teams touchdowns the score will never truly reflect the skill gap between the teams.

Jax 23 Tits 5 - I think Jax was the correct pick here howver I dont think the loss was a complete shock. I havent really seen much of the game yet but if Vince Young was THAT bad and still managed to win the game then Jax must have been absolutley abysmal. Together with the injury struggles it could be a long long season for the most penalised team in sports history.

Jets 26 Fins 2 - Absolutley no doubt that the Jets were the correct pick here however they are now being chronically overrated. This was freakin Miami. It was a one score game. Hell the fins could have even won it at the end there. Favre was mostly great but honestly if they were playing anyone but Miami then that heave extends his int record and not the td one. Make no mistake about it, the Jets have A LOT of work to do if they are to get a playoff spot this year. They are just fortunate to be in what is now a very average division. Yes the Jets could still end up winning it, but they might do so as an 8-8 team! In fact Id favour the Bills over the Jets if the Pats implode.

Chiefs 0 Pats 28 - Speaking of which. No brainer pick here and a pretty safe point in the end despite the blown coverage at the death that set up a goal line stand to keep things interesting. Despite that terrible hit on Brady (wheres the fine please?) and the resulting season ending injury I believe the Pats still have what it takes to win the division. If we somehow make it to the playoffs there wont be a single team that wants to play the Pats in the postseason, brady or not. Its somewhat concerning that they go to the Jets with a QB that hasnt started anywhere this DECADE, but lets give Belichick some credit for knowing a bit about the game.

Bucs 6 Saints 22 - Im not sure the Saints were the right side going in to this game at all, even though I picked them. Didnt really catch much of this one either.

Rams 1 Eagles 27 - The Eagles went throughout the entire off season playing second, third and even fourth fiddle (yes really some tv pundits are total morons) to the other sides in their division. Barely anyone was talking about them other than when showing Desean highlights. Hoepfully theyll now get the attention they deserve. Yes the Rams are bad.

Texans 1 Steelers 27 - This game was apparently a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. The lone Texan picker was SZ and it wasnt really a bad pick imo. If Houston doesnt get too down about this loss they'll still have a good year. The Steelers have a brutal schedule so we'll see about them.

Bengals 18 Ravens 10 - Very surprised at all those bengals picks. Ravens played just how I expected them to.

Pants 0 Chargers 28 - Although everyone picked the Chargers I wouldnt have complained about anyone taking the Panthers. This was certainly a lot closer going in to the game then many people thought and the way the game played out demonstrated that, whether delhomme makes that play at the end or not.

Cards 21 Niners 7 - Niners arent without hope this year. Once they get the hang of their new system and personnel they could test a number of teams. The Cards open strongly and again should be contesting a wild card spot.

Cowboys 27 Browns 1 - lol offensivelineaments

Bears 2 Colts 26 - Well this was just a ridiculous result. Without question the biggest upset of the week and may end up being the biggest upset of the season when its all done. There is no possible justification for picking the bears.

Vikes 7 Pack 21 - The pack came out and did what we all knew they would do, play solid football all over and allow their qb to win them the game. The vikes on the other hand have a lot of work to do. Against a lot of teams AD alone will do enough on the offensive, but in the absense of a solid QB and WR set I dont expect them to go far this year. Their defense was also a little disappointing with the lack of pressure they put on rodgers.

Broncos 23 Raiders 5 - I have no idea why I picked the Raiders. Just inexcusable. Cannot think of a single reason to justify it. Cutler looked good. Deangelo Falls. etc

Chatroom quote of the week

With Miami down 6 and time expiring, the Jets defense started to fall apart and a game winning touchdown seemed a distinct possibility:

I chose Kansas City this weekend (over Oakland), hopefully my gamble of NOT taking Green Bay so early will pay off later in the season. Also, anyone interested in placing a $300 or $400 bet on GB -3 for me? >_<

This is a very fun weekend in football, I think. A lot of would-be favorites are now just meh, and I think most lines will be shattered. But in which direction? Obv I don't know as I suck at spread!!

Steve Bryze is coming up to Green Bay (and probably spending a night at Jon's in the process) to watch the Colts/Packers game with me, that should be a lot of fun.

CHI over Carolina (L)
CIN over TEN (L)
GB over DET (W)
JAC over BUF (L)
OAK over KC (W)
IND over MIN (W)
NYG over STL (W)

4-3 so far. I had 9 wins last week, 6 losses. So that takes me to 13-9 so far on the year.

As a brief example of the fun to be had, here's a snippet from tonight's Cowboys/Eagles MNF game.  This was our reaction to Tony Romo fumbling the ball in his own endzone, picking it back up, then fumbling it away a second time, resulting in an Eagles TD.

Elite Pickem

Hi

Elite Pickem - Week 2

1 Boss - 11
1 mikerspd miscreants - 11
1 Matt8000's Pants - 11
1 Come - 11

Any week matt8000 is involved in a tie for the lead you know is a farce and can be written off immediately, so thats exactly what we'll do here. Some very silly results mean that the overall table has a new feel to it:

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 Boss - 22
1 mikerspd miscreants - 22
3 QB's Surefire Successes - 21

Elite Pickem - Win Table

Now a five-way tie at the top

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 1
1 Boss - 1
1 mikerspd miscreants - 1
1 Matt8000's Pants - 1
1 Come - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Tits 17 Bengals 7 - Its really hard to tell where the Bengals are at right now. Having played two of the top defenses in the league in back to back weeks. Taking the Bengals was the correct side here though before the game so I have no problem with losing this pick.

Saints 21 Skins 3 - Unlike this one which is just absolutely ridiculous, even more so because both QB and SZ took the skins. Theres nothing more frustrating than watching Jim suckout on a ... nevermind.

Bears 12 Pants 11 - I'm really not sure why so many people took the Bears here. After a very solid opening week from Carolina on the road it seemed like playing a much inferior team at home should see a huge pickem run on the Pants. This was not to be however as many seem to have bought too much stock in the Bears following their fortuitous victory over the Colts last week.

Bills 6 Jax 17 - Im still finding the Bills difficult to place after the first two weeks. Jax was probably the right side here but their complete lack of an oline was possibly enough reason to take the Bills and feel good about it.

Pack 23 Lions 0 - Probably the most straightforward pick of the week, but the Pack gave us a scare late in the game with some crazy defense to allow the lions to creep back into it. The game was over so early that I guess the Pack just went to sleep for a while before remembering that Kitna likes to throw ints as much as Favre used to. OMG FAVRE REFERENCE, Neo wont be happy about this!

Raiders 3 Chiefs 20 - I didnt see any of this game yet but the Chiefs have been pretty unfortunate with QB injuries to start off the season. Lets not forget that, as bad as the Raiders were in Week 1, the Chiefs are also a pretty horrendous team so it isnt a major shock at all to see oakland take it. That being said only people like matt8000 were picking them here. And Alec. You know he had 4 correct picks in the early games this week? In fact he guarantees a top 3 overall position if he joined pickem. Not that he can of course, you have to be 21 and Alec is younger than that so he will politely wait 10 years until able to legitimately enter. I know everyone is looking forward to this day, for several reasons. Firstly, when Alec joins

sadly notepad crashed at this point and I lost the remainder of the Raiders/Chiefs writeup.

Giants 23 Rams 0 - Nothing interesting could possibly have happened in this game. Question: What happened of interest in this game?
Spoiler
   Nothing!
Colts 19 Vikes 4 - It's hard to know really what the correct pick here was. I think it was probably the Colts although its more or less a coinflip. As far as the game itself, lol tavaris, lol childress. The vikes should have been up like 24-0 at half time if they had anyone in there who could throw the football even remotely well. AD was running all over a ragged Colts D and the Vikes dline was dominating the woeful group facing them on Colts possessions. But Tavaris cant throw and the Vikes forgot that running on Indy worked. Thus after some gonzo magic set up the first td it was later left to vinatieri to kick the game winning fg for the 234234th time in his career. Hejsan Gus Frerotte. Hejda Playoffs.

Niners 3 Seatavaris 20 - Well obviously taking the niners here was dumb but congrats to those who did and lucked out.

Falcs 8 Bucs 15 - Im fairly surprised so many people took the Falcs here. Kinda a big leap from playing the lions d to the bucs d

Pats 15 Jets 8 - On the other hand I guess it doesnt surprise me that so many people took the Jets for this one given the RIDICULOUS media hype about how the Jets were winning the Superbowl and dominating the league for the next 30 years all because Brady got hurt. Cassell stepped in and did a solid job managing what is now a running offense. The Pats D really stepped up to hold the Jets and Favre to practically nothing but are still vulnerable to giving up the big play with more regularity than is comfortable. However Id probably say a fair line on the Dolphins winning next week in Foxborough would be 35-1.

Fins 1 Cards 22 - Yes Miami are still bad. Yes Kurt Warner is still good.

Chargers 12 Broncos 11 - Well everyone who correctly picked the Chargers this week got royally screwed. Really not much more to add to this. Other than shanahan going for 2 was awesome. I have serious concerns about the Chargers D now for the remainder of the year.

Steelers 23 Browns 0 - Fairly straightforward pick and everyone obliged with the correct choice

Eagles 4 Dallas 19 - SHOCKING. How can only FOUR people take the Eagles. I dont think Dallas was a terrible pick, but for only four people to go with Philly is unreal. lol mediahype. Anyway, great game that had just about everything except for the result everyone wanted. Someday a Dallas lineman will get injured and the whole offense will collapse.

The Skins were in the exact same scenario this week as the Bengals so I don't get your reasoning at all how one was ridiculous and the other was obviously the correct side.

Lol at everyone already out in survival. That's really pathetic. Everybody but Indy that was the "sure" pick the first two weeks won.

Well it's only early on, I expect my score to plummet within the next month.
For the record, I generally base my tips on a team's win loss record for the season (even if we're only at round 2!), so one we've played a few rounds I'm sure to get a few correct. I'll usually pick one or two longshots, and I tip the Eagles most rounds regardless of form.

Elite Pickem

The field gets better every week!

Elite Pickem - Week 3

1 Boss - 12
1 QB's Surefire Successes - 12
1 wiff's super DUPER picks - 12
1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 12
1 DK's Penalized Picks - 12

A strong week from the Elite this time with many players doing much better than the average. A five way tie for first place with a reasonable 12 points is noteworthy only for the fact it would be a tie for SECOND place had wheat been picking with us this year.

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 Boss - 34
2 QB's Surefire Successes - 33
2 mikerspd miscreants - 33
4 wiff's super DUPER picks - 32
4 Shep's Ridic Picks - 32

Elite Pickem - Win Table

Boss and Shep's second appearance in a leading position pulls them one ahead of the rabble with one.

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 2
1 Boss - 2
3 mikerspd miscreants - 1
3 Matt8000's Pants - 1
3 Come - 1
3 QB's Surefire Successes - 1
3 wiff's super DUPER picks - 1
3 DK's Penalized Picks - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Falcs 22 Chiefs 1 - Our resident nutter matt8000 provided the one blot on the Elite's record here. For what its worth the Falcons are statistically one of the best teams in the league right now, until theres enough data available to adjust them for the teams they have faced.

Bills 23 Raiders 0 - Can't complain about a sweep of Bills picks although I think this week gave us a better idea of just how good the Bills really are. That being said they still might be the best team in their division right now, which is a pretty dismal state of affairs really.

Bears 16 Bucs 7 - Despite being the home team in a close matchup I am kinda surprised at the number of Bears pickers, and I'm sure wheat would agree.

Tits 20 Texans 3 - I would have liked to pick the Texans as a risk but thought better of it. Houston are still probably better than they appear, having opened the season with two tough road games. Although their schedule doesnt really get an awful lot easier any time soon.

Vikes 8 Pants 15 - Odd to see so many Panthers picks here. I like Carolina a lot but really the Vikes at home should have been able to deal with them, even with Smith returning. And thats just what happened.

Pats 23 Fins 0 - Just one of those freak results I guess, or was it? Miami has always been a nuisance team for the Pats but maybe this is the first legitimate sign that New England is in decline. Its really difficult to tell as there is so much coaching ability and (old) talent on the roster still to make this a playoff team yet.

Giants 23 Bengals 0 - Pretty straightforward pick here but the Giants were considerably overvauled in the spread. What has happened to that Bengals oline?

Skins 9 Cards 14 - I havent seen the skins since week one but I'd really like to do so again now because it would appear they are a completely different outfit. I wasnt comfortable at all picking the Cards here and I guess it was the wrong side

Broncos 20 Saints 3 - Meh. The Saints were obviously the correct risk pick this week and I am so ghsfdihgiudhiurdgiphsuidgupgs annoyed that they didnt get it done, despite the multiple opportunites they had to come away with the win. Im sure matt8000 and dykstra are as frustrated as I am.

Niners 16 Lions 7 - Why are people still picking the lions?

Seajimbos 23 Rams 0 - The St Louis Lols

Ravens 17 Browns 6 - Hard to know how much of this is the Ravens being awesome or the Browns being terrible. I've never been a huge Anderson fan but is he really the reason Cleveland are sucking so much thus far??

Eagles 16 Steelers 7 - So the Steelers arent content with being a miserable team, they want to also ensure any game they are involved in is miserable to watch also.

Colts 21 Jax 1 - Yes one of Ngamers cousins chose to protest and not pick this game either way. I think the Colts were the right side here (only Sucram went the other way), but the Jax offense really started to get themselves back together this week and show some promise for the games still to come. Whether or not Taylor and MJD can stay healthy all year is another matter and certainly they wont come up against run defenses this porous that often, but it was still a great improvement. Peyton continues to suffer from the curse of being drafted by me in my $ league, although it largely isnt his fault.

Pack 7 Cowbowys 16 - Well this was just dumb all round. Firstly the Pack should have been favoured here so I dont get all the Cowboys picks. Secondly I somehow picked Dallas here anyway even though I didnt intend to, so I totally luckboxed a correct pick thanks to some fat fingers type screw up. Thirdly the Pack give up several retard touchdowns in a game they could otherwise have won. Fourthly Dallas are going to the Superbowl this year for a number of reason: a) they are overrated b) they have an overrated qb c) they win games despite a+b d) a+b+c loses me money e) a+b+c+d makes me mad f) a+b+c+d+e means i will rant about it here g) a+b+c+d+e+f = superbowl

Chargers 16 Jets 7 - The Chargers winning big was the most obvious result of the week.

Elite Spread Pickem

Elite Spread Pickem - Week 3

QB somehow gets credited with the official win on Yahoo, no doubt thanks to the coinflip 'what will the square root of the number of times Mike Martz advises Mike Nolan to throw a flag, multiplied by the number of Fred Taylor broken tackles, divided by the sum of Gramatica field goal misses and Favre interceptions, cubed be' tiebreakers.

1 QB's Spread Offense - 11

I love you wrap-ups, but some of your commentary is a little confusing. Shouldn't the "right pick" be the team that wins, lest we all be picking the favourite each week? And the Cowboys killed the Packers, even Jimbo agrees with this.

Yeah Dallas was correctly favored, and although I agree Dallas is incredibly overrated, our team is too young to take on the talent they have in priiiiiimetime.

the 'correct' pick is a mixture of favourites and underdogs that I think are good opportunities to make a pick that is different from the masses. ie picking the pats was correct last week, as was taking the packers or saints. the result of the game is irrelevant. Now, people can disagree as to who they think are the favourites and where the best places are to take risks and thats fine, im presenting one viewpoint. Obviously everyone here spends like 30 secs doing their picks each week and this is a fun competition, so no one should take the writeups too seriously. (although from a sports betting perspective some of the stuff i write here is enough to put me on tilt)

I didnt really say anywhere that Dallas didnt kill the Pack, but I still think they were the right play in a pickem pregame. The Packs defense matches up very well with the Cowboys offense and I think for pretty much most of the game that was obvious, although less so after Al Harris died. I dont know wtf happened for the felix td and then miles flippin austin burns the secondary?????? Couldnt have seen that coming. Someone made a great point about the WCO breaking down in catchup football, I cant remember who it was - maybe one of Madden/Michaels - and that was really the first time so far the Pack missed Favre, as Rodgers with his inexperience didnt seem to be able to deal with it as well. That being said if Driver takes it all the way on that monster play things may have been very different.

Haha, "personal bye week". Good one. We ought to be even: 1 for Jackson dropping it, 1 for McNabb sneaking it vs Bears. ARGH!

Also I wanted to mention that I went to high school with Montell Owens... Jacksonville's 3rd halfback on the depth chart and terrific special teamer (once recovered an onside kick vs. Dallas) who ran in the fake "punt" 41 yard for the TD against Houston on Sunday.

SMAH BOY!

Elite Pickem

Looking through the list of entrants this year I only have one thought. Wheres Brandon?

Elite Pickem - Week 4

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 9
1 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 9
1 Esox Magnus - 9
1 MMF Moles - 9

Respectable score totals on a bye week, although several big upsets really killed off a number of obvious picks. Its so rare to see one Bearder near the top of the leaderboard let alone TWO!

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 QB's Surefire Successes - 41
1 Boss - 41
1 mikerspd miscreants - 41
1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 41
5 wiff's super DUPER picks - 40

Elite Pickem - Win Table

As the win table welcomes the addition of the Barbers and Drag, Shep takes an outright lead with his third weekly leaderboard top.

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 3
2 Boss - 2
3 mikerspd miscreants - 1
3 Matt8000's Pants - 1
3 Come - 1
3 QB's Surefire Successes - 1
3 wiff's super DUPER picks - 1
3 DK's Penalized Picks - 1
3 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 1
3 Esox Magnus - 1
3 MMF Moles - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Browns 2 Bengals 21 - Well everyone except Jon and Drag took the Bengals here, although I think most of us realised we should have changed that pick once Palmer was confirmed out. Everyone was too busy trying to make money out of the situation rather than thinking of altering their pick though!

Vikes 2 Tits 21 - Its amazing how far the Vikes stock has fallen in the first 3 weeks to lead to this kind of pick distribution. Likewise the Titans are playing incredibly well, especially on defense. From being pretty much the consensus wooden spoon favourite in their division, the Tits are now looking good to finish on top!

Broncos 23 Chiefs 0 - Most people had $ on the Chiefs to cover, but win the game outright?? Did anyone really think that would happen? Not in the Elite league thats for sure!

Niners 4 Saints 19 - I guess a shot on the niners here would have been acceptable had they been at home, but not on the road.

Cards 10 Jets 11 - Well that was a ridiculous game. I find it fairly astonishing that Favre has never thrown this many touchdowns in a game before. On the other side I guess this wasnt even close to Warner's turnover PR (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ftongue.gif&hash=7cfc888ebd66cf455a55fd5e124ee8267da91148) I don't know what the right side of this game was really so picking either was fine.

Pack 18 Bucs 5 - This was all about the Bucs beating themselves mentally early on, according to Alec. I suppose they won the game mentally thereafter. I'm not sure what the right side was here either. Like the Jets game I would say picking either was defensible and an example of why you dont need to necessarily look to make too many upset picks early in this game to try and stand out from the crowd. There'll be enough 50/50 games that will give you opportunities at better odds.

Falcs 4 Pants 19 - Pretty straightforward pick for those of us who have less faith in the Atlanta offense than Alec and friends.

Texans 1 Jax 20 - Jax eek out another victory against a divisional rival and are slowly playing themselves back into things. The offense still seems a little one dimensional, although Del Rio does his best to compensate with his jap plays (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fhappy.gif&hash=7b9cd982f9a41f9aefcd7ea74682d5f1e4caf4c6)

Chargers 23 Raiders 0 - lol Raiders. I actually think Kiffin has a lot of potential as a coach and I don't understand him being fired from the perspective of an organisation that likes winning. Of course the Raiders don't, so the dismissal makes complete sense. The Chargers show here they still have some work to do if they are to contend later in the season.

Bills 23 Rams 0 - Nothing of note to see here other than a dumb decision to sit Bulger.

Skins 1 Cowboys 22 - Wiff was the only Dallas hater to put his $ where his mouth was this week, and he was handsomely rewarded with what in all fairness was an upset pick. The skins really impressed me with how they performed, particulary the speed with which their personnel are adapting to the new system. After the week 1 semi-debacle they all deserve a tremendous amount of credit for this reversal in performance.

Eagles 19 Bears 4 - How did the Eagles not win this game given all the turnovers? I suppose the simple answer is no Westbrook and its probably also the correct one. Although some very dumb play calling at the goal line was arguably equally to blame. Credit the Bears defense though.

Ravens 2 Steelers 21 - Sadly I didnt get to see this because my recording equipment failed, however this can't have been the most thrilling encounter despite the overtime.

Elite Spread Pickem

Elite Spread Pickem - Week 4

A lower scoring week than previous, although with teams on a bye now there are less potential points to pick up. Jon takes the outright win

1 Ng Says Spread'Em - 8

Elite Spread Pickem - Overall

1 Shep's Nonsense - 38
2 Ng Says Spread'Em - 35
3 Boss - 34
4 QB's Spread Offense - 32

I have no problem with the goal line play calling by Andy Reid.

On the earlier first and goal series, Buckhalter would have walked into the endzone had McNabb not tripped on his own two feet before the handoff. Replays showed the blocking was a yard deep into the end zone. On the final goal line drive, Reid just went with the statistics. There is a 99% chance of moving the ball 18 inches on three consecutive running plays. Granted it's 99.9% for three straight quarterback sneaks, but reports were that McNabb was still very sore all week from the Steelers game, and why risk more off time for your most important player when you have a 99% chance with another method? The call was okay, and the players didn't execute. On the leap-over attempt, Matt Schobel, a guy I couldn't dislike having on the Eagles more, allowed the defensive end to go right by him in order to try to block the linebacker, which he could barely even touch. That defensive end was the only reason the flying leap got halted soon enough to avoid paydirt, grabbing Buckhalter around the legs in midair just as he leaped. It was a case of the players letting the coach down, and now he'll take all the heat for it (also note our best offensive lineman was out for the game).

The real reasons the game was lost was a muffed punt, and TWO MISSED FIELD GOALS. If even one of those go in, we're not even getting stuffed on fourth down, we're putting 3 more points on the board and definitely putting the game out of reach given how our D was absolutely slaying their O.

Anyway, we're the worst team in the NFC East so far... this is NOT good.

I don't have a problem with the playcalling either, and I'm not entirely convinced that we didn't score on 2 of those plunges! Anyway, we'll be fine. I'm not panicking at all.

Post by: rshepherd1000 on October 01, 2008, 06:05:00 pm
I don't think you can blame missing 50 yarders early in the game. Its hiding the fact Philly got a lot of great field position in the game and didnt do much with it. The muffed punt wasn't great, but if your d played as well in the red zone as it did in the bears half of the field that wouldnt have been as big an issue either.

To be clear I didnt mind the call on 4th down as much as the one on 3rd (referring to the final drive). The leap just seemed so ridiculously ambitious that you have to call something else. I would have liked the sneak on 4th also but I wasn't aware Mcnabb was so dead he couldnt pull it off. That being said it looked like a td to me anyway.

Post by: youseinthehouse on October 01, 2008, 06:39:00 pm
Missing a 50 yarder is OK, following that up (you should be tuned at this point) with a 47 yard miss is NOT OK for an NFL kicker who is often (wrongly) considered one of the best.

And I agree, the overhead camera on the 4th down play looked like the ball broke the plane... it would just depend on whether the overhead angle was directly over the line or back farther, making the touchdown just an illusion. Andy Reid is one of the most depressing coaches when it comes to challenges, using them much too frequently for plays that have no shot at being overturned... this was a time when I wanted him to bust one out. His track record probably told him not to challenge and save the timeout for the defensive stand (which also failed miserably allowing a first down).

I won't be panicking unless we lose at home to the Skins this week. I predict both Westbrook playing and us winning big though. That will really bring the NFC East into a very exciting situation... although Dallas and NYG both have some snoozers coming up where they'll win by double digits each for the next few weeks.

Post by: youseinthehouse on October 03, 2008, 04:02:00 pm
Madden and Michaels (mainly Al) seemed to think so, but I think they were just trying to create something to talk about... That call was in no way overturnable after watching several replays... it was a good non-challenge. I was watching the game with many biased Eagles fans and nobody thought we should challenge it.

See what I mean about horrible challenges?

Andy Reid challenging a play is a good reason to cheer if you're the other team.

I'm in panic mode (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ffrown.gif&hash=9bb8520656650a7c2457ae0ae2ee8996e4109fd6) Luckily my dad is keeping the faith, which is keeping me from going off the deep end. (Also the Phillies are really helping out here).

Also I live another day in Survival, but my pick was flat out owned by Neo's. In fact given our already-picked teams, he's looking a lot better than me so far.

Elite Pickem

Some questionable strategy from Larkin this week. Nothing better than picking only one game and getting it wrong.

Elite Pickem - Week 5

1 Mor Lemonparty - 10
1 Poteau Jedi - 10
2 wiff's super DUPER picks - 9
2 MMF Moles - 9
2 StoneHands - 9

Fairly strong totals from some unexpected sources. SZ manages to finish first, joined with Nate on 10 correct picks.

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 Boss - 49
1 wiff's super DUPER picks - 49
3 mikerspd miscreants - 48
3 Shep's Ridic Picks - 48
5 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 47
5 QB's Surefire Successes - 47

Elite Pickem - Win Table

More new joiners to what is fast becoming a cluttered mess!

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 3
2 Boss - 2
3 mikerspd miscreants - 1
3 Matt8000's Pants - 1
3 Come - 1
3 QB's Surefire Successes - 1
3 wiff's super DUPER picks - 1
3 DK's Penalized Picks - 1
3 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 1
3 Esox Magnus - 1
3 MMF Moles - 1
3 Mor Lemonparty - 1
3 Poteau Jedi - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Bears 19 Lions 2 - I'm not high on the Bears at all, but against the Lions? QB felt otherwise and took Detroit

Falcs 1 Pack 20 - This result was pretty much locked up as soon as Jimbo opened his fat mouth and said that the Pack were a good bet.

Chargers 18 Miami 3 - Theres a recurring theme this week in that there were several upsets that those you see at the top of the weekly leaderboard picked out. What happened to cause this Chargers slump other than me drafing LT #1 in my $ league?

Sealols 1 Giants 20 - Nothing interesting here

Skins 4 Eagles 17 - Poor Eagles. Just can't get a break ever. That being said, Washington continue to impress and may actually be the best team in the NFC right now.

Chiefs 0 Pants 21 - Pants are quietly putting together an impressive string of performances that could see them end up as a solid playoff team. The Chiefs are woeful, but any time you shut out a team its not a bad thing. Except when youre facing that D in Fantasy (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fmad.gif&hash=a7d299cdc47984306fa32671e3a59bcf63c85b4c)

Tits 14 Ravens 7 - Damn those Tits are looking mighty fine right now. I really don't think they are as good as their record says, but they are probably one of the best teams in the AFC nonetheless, possibly the best.

Colts 17 Texans 4 - I think picking the Colts here was the right play, but the suckout win was absolutely ludicrous. Why does this kind of thing NEVER happen when you want it to?

Bucs 8 Broncos 13 - So the Broncos arent really as good as everyone thought after 3 weeks, but are probably going to the playoffs given the state of their division. I had the bucs here but I think that may have been the wrong play.

Bills 14 Cards 7 - I think the Cards were the correct play here, although we were certainly helped by Edwards getting laid out early. I know Come agrees.

Pats 16 Niners 5 - Taking the niners here was a good play, although I didnt go as far as to do that myself. This weeks game against the Chargers could be a total lolfest.

Bengals 0 Cowboys 21 - Fortunate time to play the Bengals really as Dallas have started to get exposed recently.

Pitt 7 Jax 14 - I flat out hate watching Pitt play as I like just about noone on their team. Jax played reasonably well at times but several bonehead penalties must have had Del Rio on suicide watch on the sideline.

Vikes 4 Saints 19 - Probably the best game of the year so far. Incredibly entertaining and some huge individual performances including one of the best blocks I've seen in a long time. This was the result that gave Jim/Nate top spot for the week as more or less everyone else, including guest pickers Larkin and co, had the Saints.

Congrats Neo!!! You Neowned me, and everybody! I'll contend that we truly deserved to tie, as even Boss will tell you Minny had no business winning today, what with that absolutely ludicrous phantom PI call late in the game to seal the easy winning FG.

Eh, I stand by my Vikings pick, but I'll be the first to admit it should have gone the other way. For a good while there I was sure it would be Skins-Lions victories, so I most certainly agree that we both should have won or lost together this weekend.

I still think I could have taken you in the long run though, so I think it's unfortunate that I should win in such lucky circumstances... hopefully I can go a good many weeks yet and prove it hasn't all been luck. In any case, just glad to get my first gold Yahoo Trophy!

Yes, I still commend you, and didn't mean to take anything away by sounding like a whiny bitch! I mean, speaking in terms of lucky victories, I should have lost with both Buffalo and Jacksonville earlier in the year, so I can't really complain too much. I'm just disappointed I couldn't make the year more epic. Imagine if we were still going toe to toe in week 13! (I am really going to let my two Skins fans buddies hear it-- they gave me such shit for hyping up the Eagles huge win over the Rams by saying what a joke team they were... welp: joke's on you guys now!)

Still, I'm rooting for you to go the distance in Survival... you've picked adeptly so far and have lots of good teams left to use.

Great job Neo, just don't use Indy/GB this week! Youse I don't think you'll ever give Rodgers enough credit (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ftongue.gif&hash=7cfc888ebd66cf455a55fd5e124ee8267da91148)

Rodgers is certainly exceeding my expectations, and for getting 3 TDs with a very sore shoulder definitely earns bigtime props from me. Tell me one good defense he has carved up so far, and don't even try to say Minny! He got pwned by Dallas and their defense isn't even that great as it stands.

Super 5 isn't so much playing below expectations as the entire team is just not finding the end zone right now. There have been maybe 3-5 TDs this season that were set up by beautiful pass plays to within the 5 yard line or so that were then punched in by a running play (not even counting the DeSean gaffe or the TWO different should-have-sneaked goal line series). These things will even out. I hope.

Elite Pickem

Remember its never too late to start to play, that goes for you too wheat!

Elite Pickem - Week 6

1 wiff's super DUPER picks - 10
2 Shep's Ridic Picks - 9
2 Tuffy - 9

Since everyone has no doubt already heard him celebrating, it is fairly old news to report Wiff's stunning victory this week with 10 correct picks. He now opens up a little lead overall.

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 wiff's super DUPER picks - 59
2 Boss - 57
2 Shep's Ridic Picks - 57
4 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 55
5 QB's Surefire Successes - 54
5 Neo's Aussie Picks - 54
5 mikerspd miscreants - 54

Elite Pickem - Win Table

Wiff joins Boss with 2 weekly wins.

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 3
2 Boss - 2
2 wiff's super DUPER picks - 2
4 mikerspd miscreants - 1
4 Matt8000's Pants - 1
4 Come - 1
4 QB's Surefire Successes - 1
4 DK's Penalized Picks - 1
4 Ng's Picks of Awesome - 1
4 Esox Magnus - 1
4 MMF Moles - 1
4 Mor Lemonparty - 1
4 Poteau Jedi - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold):

Bears 19 Falcs 3 - Just an awesome finish to what was otherwise a fairly entertaining game. As much as Ryan's college stats suggest he shouldnt have a succesful NFL career, he is actually doing a reasonable job right now. Could Alec be right about this guy afterall?

Pants 12 Bucs 10 - I'm kinda surprised so many people took Carolina here, although the scoreline probably didnt reflect the quality gap between the two sides.

Rams 0 Skins 22 - A true matt8000 special. Except he didnt pull the trigger and the Rams still won! Even though this loss is very ridiculous for the redskins I still have them as one of the better teams in the league.

Miami 14 Texans 8 - The Texans finally manage to win a game that they should have. Crazy play calling at the death.

Ravens 6 Colts 16 - Meh I was on the Ravens and it clearly was the wrong side. Although again I dont believe the scoreline accurately resembles the quality difference between these teams.

Lions 0 Vikes 22 - Well we all caught a break here as the Vikes struggles immensely in a game full of coaching blunders, retard qb plays and critical turnover moments.

Raiders 2 Saints 20 - Very dull game as the Raiders offered up almost nothing of interest except their standard 60 yard fg attempts.

Bengals 4 Jets 18 - I guess even the 4 who had picked the Bengals outright would have changed once Palmer was ruled out.

Jax 6 Broncos 16 - I had Jax but I'm not sure it was the correct side to play. Can probably pass it off as an ok gamble pick.

Cowboys 18 Cards 4 - WOOOO Cards. This one was wrapped up before a ludicrous finish almost threatend to undo everything. And now Romo is gone for a month... or is he???

Eagles 20 Niners 2 - Despite everything the Eagles might be the best team in the league, but they try so hard to make every game closer than it needs to be.

Pack 17 Seapack 5 - This pick was locked up as soon as Jimbo put $ on it.

Pats 11 Chargers 11 - Meh I had the Pats and it might have been my worst pick of the year.

Giants 21 Browns 1 - Woll obv.

Elite Spread Pickem

Elite Spread Pickem - Week 6

Some higher scoring by all this week. Shep pulls off the win with 10.

Heh, I have a disgustingly high number of Cowboys fans for friends. I don't know who parented these people, allowing them to become 'girls fans growing up around here. I'm not sure if the America's Team phenomenon is everlasting or if it was just because the Cowboys were dominant in the age when my specific generation was very young and had such a malleable mind (early 90s). Yes, the specific joke's on them now with the Rams thing and I'm going to have another great week of trash-talking. But let's face the bigger picture-- the joke has more or less been on them since early 1996 IMO (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

In fact one of the biggest Eagles fans friends of mine used to be a Cowboys fan... switching over around the beginning of the Eagles glory years in 2000 or 2001. We didn't warm up to it for a while since it was obvious how much of a huge front-runner he was being. Now it's pretty much accepted because you can tell he never gave a shit about the Cowboys and was sucked into that whole youthful exuberance thing I mentioned.

Man I can't believe how badly the Packers made Manning look. This game was probably the best I could have gone to this year (barring playoffs if we get there, and I'm sure Ngamer would agree). The decibel level of the crowd was absolutely ridiculous on most 3rd and 4th downs. The INT/TDs by Collins and Rouse were super awesome and this game had everything one could ask for. Rodgers only got 1 TD in McNabb's bye but it still stands at Rodgers having a 7 TD lead going into HIS bye. We'll see how this 2nd half goes (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown

I really dont have much to say this week. My feed was dead or otherwise intermittently active on Sunday and recording of the games likewise failed for S/MNF. Suffice to say I contemplated suicide on several occasions as a consequence. In fact only last night I actually woke from a nightmare where I had dreamt that there was no NFL chat during the early games in the Elite Chatroom (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ffrown.gif&hash=9bb8520656650a7c2457ae0ae2ee8996e4109fd6) True story. Anyway, there wont be much if any chat from me again this week as I'm off to watch the Chargers play the Saints in London! Should be a lot better than last years miserable affair between arguably the two worst teams in the league at the time (Miami improved a little afterwards).

9 Come - 1
9 DK's Penalized Picks - 1
9 MMF Moles - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold)

Bucs 14 Dallas 8 - Noone had any business taking Dallas this week.

Redskins 22 Lions 0 - Fun fact I read on 2+2. In 6 of the Lions first 7 games this season, the opposing QB has set his career high passer rating. Guess the exception?

Bills 19 Miami 3 - Miami are a very strange team and I'm really not sure what right they have to be winning any games.

Rams 0 Pats 22 - Kinda surprised that nobody took the Rams here, although the Pats were justifiably a reasonably sized favourite.

Chargers 11 Saints 11 - Well this was an infinitely better game than last year. It sucks that it seems no one in the US got to see it live though. Crowd was excellent - I lold at fact Rivers got booed out of the building at his player introduction for example. Watching football live is just so awesome and I wish I could do it every week. You get to see so much that you dont on TV, particularly the CB/WR play which interests me a lot, and any time the ball is aired out the anticipation in the crowd is really something. Hopefully there will be a game to go to next year.

Chiefs 0 Jets 22 - Thought someone might take a flyer on the Chiefs here as well, but not to be.

Falcs 2 Eagles 20 - The Eagles are back on track with two wins over the resolute niners and plucky falcons. Youse HAS to feel comfortable now with the odds of a playoff appearance.

Raiders 1 Ravens 21 - Lark was our rogue picker this week.

Cards 9 Pants 13 - Not much to say about this other than it was sone of the two games Jim got incorrect, the other being the Bills.

Browns 2 Jax 20 - If theres one thing worse than Jax blowing games its the Browns winning games. DK is going to have to start accepting some responsibility now for these losses

Bengals 1 Texans 21 - Just how bad are the Bengals this year? Sucram thinks theyre still capable of winning on the road though.

Giants 8 Steelers 14 - God the Steelers are just so useless.

Seawheatfield 9 Niners 13 - I hate meaningless games.

Colts 5 Tits 17 - At the start of the season it would have been quite unimaginable that we would have had this kind of prediction set for a Colts/Tits game. Now lets see the Pack end the Tits domination next week.

Elite Pickem

Bungles!

Elite Pickem - Week 9

Fairly average week for the Elite as the winners only managed to get 10 picks correct. Furthermore a poor week for the rest of the top overall pickers thus far lets QB rise to the top of the leaderboard.

1 DK's Penalized Picks - 10
1 Come - 10
1 StoneHands - 10
1 Cyber's picks - 10
1 Esox Magnus - 10

Elite Pickem - Overall Table

1 QB's Surefire Successes - 84
1 Boss - 84
3 wiff's super DUPER picks - 83
3 Shep's Ridic Picks - 83
5 mikerspd miscreants - 82

Elite Pickem - Win Table

A Bearder now moves into a tie for the most number of wins, with Jon lagging way way behind.

1 Shep's Ridic Picks - 3
1 Boss - 3
1 Mor Lemonparty - 3
1 Esox Magnus - 3
5 wiff's super DUPER picks - 2
5 Matt8000's Pants - 2

11 mikerspd miscreants - 1
11 MMF Moles - 1
11 Poteau Jedi - 1
11 StoneHands - 1
11 Cyber's picks - 1

Elite Pickem - Pick breakdown (winner in bold)

Jets 1 Bills 20 - VERY surprised that only one peson too the Jets (Cyber). This seemed like a tossup really.

Lions 0 Bears 21 - Somehow the lions almost won this. At least wheat got his wish and Rex is back at QB.

Jax 19 Bungles 2 - Are Jax really this bad? I mean I know they are bad thanks to their ridic unluck with injuries, but the Bungles?

Ravens 8 Browns 13 - Another surprising pick distribution with the majority inexplicably taking the Browns. Still, Jimbo will be much more optimistic about his Browns bet now Brady Quinn has been named starter.

Cards 17 Rams 4 - Meh I picked the Rams here and it wasnt a misclick. That proved to be an awful choice! And FO has the Cards ranked as the 4th best team in the league!

Texans 6 Vikes 15 - Feels like a meaningless game, except the Vikes are somehow still in legitimate contention for a playoff spot.

Pack 5 Tits 16 - I really thought the Pack had a great shot at winning this game so am very comfortable with picking them. Oh well, Jimbo lost money at least.

Bucs 21 Chiefs 0 - Everyone dodged a bullet, although the relative overall scores obviously wouldnt have been affected either way

Miami 3 Broncos 18 - Don't know what to say about this, Miami apparently have one of the top offenses in the league now according to FO, whilst Denver are in complete freefall.

Dallas 3 Giants 18 - Dallas are a total mess right now.

Eagles 18 Seagles 3 - Always a relief to see the Eagles actually win a game they are expected to.

Falcs 19 Raiders 2 - lol

Pats 11 Colts 10 - Odd that more people thought the Pats were favourites. I didn't give them much chance at all of winning this game. Bob Sanders makes the dumbest play of the season.

Steelers 7 Skins 14 - Highly frustrating to see the Steelers get this done, especially with Leftwich win for so much of the game. I dont really rate Pitt that well at all right now.

With Aaron Rodgers now out to a commanding 18 to 15 lead in total touchdowns, I wondered if Youse might have lost faith in winning his season long bet against Jimbo. Here's how he responded.

TopRogue7: what is it now, 15 to 15?
ImNgamer: no, actually Rodgers also has three rushing TDs, so-
TopRogue7: I've never been a part of a tie. I never even knew that was in the gambling rule book.
TopRogue7: If it's part of the rules, I guess we have to go with it. I was looking forward to getting the opportunity to support my team and try to win this bet.
TopRogue7: But unfortunately, with the rules, it looks like we might settle with a tie.
TopRogue7: Which would result in something called a "push." I guess I'm aware of that now...
TopRogue7: But I hate to see what will happen in the Super Bowl and in the playoffs.
ImNgamer: uhhh, pretty sure this bet is just for the regular seas-
TopRogue7 has signed off

Heh, good one.

On the contrary, I'd love to see what would happen in the Super Bowl or in the playoffs, since I'm giving us virtually no shot at even making them this year (~1%).

And it pains me to see so many Packer TDs within the 2 yard line be passing or QB sneaking when they have Ryan Grant (there must be 5-6 such TDs at least so far this year). My logic on this one is that Mike "Ultimate dumbass" McCarthy needs to pad AR's stats as much as possible to make it seem like he's not the ultimate dumbass he is for letting Brett Favre go.

Don't playa hate on A-rod.

Edit: In all seriousness, Youse, that has a lot to do with our top-notch WR core!

Not hatin'. A-Rod has been a key to my success in my hometown fantasy league ($$ league). Almost as much of a key as everyone else in the league being terrible at fantasy football. I'm even starting to lose faith on this bet. I figured this past weekend would have equalized the two QBs at the very least. Instead, AR gained ground on Donny Mac despite playing a supposedly stout Bears D while we had the Bungles to tear up all day....

The only thing we got goin' in our favor here is that the Eagles are in absolutely must win mode. Also, McNabb should internally be putting himself into must-be-completely-phenomenal mode in order to remain the quarterback here. All the haters on the radio/tv/newspaper are calling for his head on a silver platter. It's depressing, because he's definitely still the guy.

Andy Reid, OTOH, should GTFO.

This may be surprising, but the Bengals pass D has been much better than the Bears pass D this year. In fact, one might call the Bears pass D deplorable.

I'd go as far as saying that their run D is just as bad! (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Another edit: Both the Eagles and the Packers are in absolutely-must-win mode, for us it's a 6 game season between 3 teams, so we're in the same boat.

I'd go as far as saying that the Packers give up 60 more rushing yards per game than the Bears.

That was a total hit on their ability to stop Tennessee, but their inability to stop an overrated Ryan Grant from running 145 yards!

Cincy locking us down had less to do with how good they are at pass D (which looking over it, they do seem legit there) and more to do with them completely not caring about the run. We ran the ball four (FOUR!) times in the first half on a day with >15 mph wind for much of the day. Short of Westbrook being "secretly" slightly hurt, I see absolutely no justification for that play calling given the conditions.

What didn't help was when receivers were open, there were a few poor throws (wind) and dropped passes (WTF?).

Well here are some small tidbits from Jimbo after that Green Bay/New Orleans game:

1. Drew Brees is one of the finest Quarterbacks I've ever seen. I've never witnessed a QB throw a perfect game before (literally 158.3), but now I have. Our pass defense was supposed to be able to contain that ridiculous arm and WR core of his; there is a reason our pass defense is 3rd in the league combined and 1st in INTs and all that good stuff. We were matching them TD for TD in the first half and I was impressed as hell with that. Why our pass defense did NOTHING is something I have yet to figure out, it may just be that Brees is his receivers are just that good. (then again if they ARE that good, why is their record only 6-5?).

2. Rodgers had a fine game imo and gained 3 TDs on Donovan McNabb, yay for me. The 1st pick he threw was an error on Greg Jennings (who doesn't fuck up very much) and that was a clear gift to Jason David (who imo is incredibly overrated and laughable most of the time). The 2nd INT was more Rodgers' fault as it was underthrown, and the 3rd was a Favre-heave to the end zone where Jordy Nelson simply got out-jumped.

3. The Packers are not out of this by any means, we're 0-3 against the NFC South this year and damnit I really hope it's not 0-4 after next week (since QB and I will be at the game at LAMBEAU FIELD). One game out of of the division lead is by no means awful with 5 games remaining, but I'm starting to worry that our team can't stay consistent. I think next week vs Carolina will give me, and a lot of other GB faithful, a much better idea/reality as to how good we really are and what we COULD do if we win the division (which I still expect, of course).

If the Packers had to lose this game, I'm happy at least that Brees kept his miraculous season going, you have no idea how badly I want to see Marino's damn record from 1984 fall into the depths of hell. He's on pace for like 5100 yards and damnit I hope he does it! Go Brees!

Hahah, I actually hadn't considered your sadness at the time, or any sadness for that matter! Despite how gay the rest of this sentence might sound, I actually almost always think of you whenever I hear about the Bucs in any capacity, since you're the only one I know who roots for them. The Bolts I mainly associate with DK now, and I don't recall you ever being huge on the Rays, for the likely reason that they were so irrelevant before that you wouldn't have had reason to spout off about them so much.

All I felt was extreme joy. I'm talking about total euphoria. I wasn't looking to rub it in anyone's face, and I didn't hate the Rays like I hated the Dodgers-- that fateful night was solely for positive, cleansing enjoyment. The only thing slightly annoying about your team was their mohawks, but I'd still have rooted for them over any other playoff team, period.

It's funny... Tampa, on the whole, has broken my heart more than any other city-- but I'm not really mad at them/you, like I'd be if it was a New York or Pittsburgh or Dallas team or something. The toughest was when the Bucs closed out the Vet in the NFC Champ Game with a loss even more crushing to me than the Super Bowl loss to the Pats was, for two reasons--- i) I knew that game was the Super Bowl (either team would've crushed the Raiders, as proven), and ii) the Patriots cheated anyways, so there's some solace there (not much, but enough to slide SBXXXIX down to #2). Then, the Bucs really rubbed our noses in it while opening up the Linc with a shutout win the next season. Almost as tough as the NFC Championship was the Lightning ousting the Flyers in the following year's conference finals in 7 games. The crushing experience had a massive silver lining, though, as it was elongated by my favorite hockey game ever (Game 6).

So yeah, I really don't hold any grudges toward the city and therefore couldn't revel in your tears. In fact, I still like the recent Bucs because of Garcia (of course, I wouldn't mind stealing their playoff spot). That said, had the Rays followed through on 90% of the experts' picks and taken the Series, I don't know how much more Tampa owning us I could take. That might have been the last straw. I'd be so hell bent on revenge, I might try to convince Lightning ownership to hire a washed-up-coach-turned-analyst as their next head coach and sign Lecavalier to a financially burdensome 11 year contract. That'd show 'em!

hehe yeah.. I think the collapse of the Lightning should be satisfying enough for you.  When the Lightning suck, hockey sucks.  I mean, not even a playoff race to think about 2 years straight?  God damn.  I'm paying $160 for out-of-network games (in miami - fuck the panthers), and so far I've been treated to 7 wins in 30 games (fewest in the league, comfortably) and fewest goals scored.  This with the team that was supposed to be the Celtics of the NHL.  Melrose?  A bust (well, still fired absurdly premature)  Stamkos?  Nothing so far.  Boyle?  Traded for guys we already flipped.  Still, Lecavalier and Marty are still solid.. it's an outrage that the team is this bad for the 2nd straight year.  And Mike Smith could be an All-Star if he were on another team.

I'd have to say this World Series really strengthened the Philly-Tampa rivalry, although it's tough to become rivals with a city that already has tons of well established rivals.  But some memorable battles for sure, as you noted.  I will admit 2 things about the Rays.  One, I admit that yeah, wasn't much of a fan before this year.  But who could be?  Two, I admit that I didn't feel too bad about losing the world series.  Both of these admissions are ones that even the more serious Rays fans I know also have made.  The Red Sox series felt like the World Series, holy shit.  After blowing the huge lead in game 5 and then losing game 6... the fear of losing that game 7 made the win extremely satisfying.  Realistically, it was nearly impossible to feel bad about the Series after how much surprise goodness the Rays supplied the fans.  I definitely thought of you when the Phillies won and figured it meant more to you.  The Lightning and Bucs championships were truly a couple of the best nights of my life, so I figure everyone deserves to know that feeling.  I will also say that I don't really despise Philly teams usually (I seem to have purer hatred for miami teams - it sucks living here)... the Flyers piss me off a bit, but with the Lightning down and out it's lost some meaning.  The Eagles are a subject of pity more than anything else.  I find myself pulling for them.  And the Phillies... can't really object to guys like Utley, Howard, and Hamels.  Lidge and Victorino.. another story.  But overall, hardly villains.

I was much too young (8 years old) to really appreciate Green Bay's win in Superbowl XXXI, and my favorite driver had seemingly THE worst way to lose a NASCAR championship in recent memory. Sterling Marlin was a damn idol of mine (as was Dale Earnhardt, but I always liked Sterling more) and in 2002 he was THE guy to beat for 25 weeks of the year (at the time it was the longest consecutive reign of #1 in history). In September, he had 2 crashes which ultimately sidelined him the rest of the year. I was 14 then, I still am not over this to this day. Tony Stewart is not the 2002 champion, Marlin is!

I really started getting into NFL Football in 2005, obv I had always watched but NASCAR was #1 to me. That first year, Green Bay went 4-12 and I couldn't believe that I had just witnessed Green Bay's first losing season in 14 years. Long story short, the Packers' 2007 magical 13-3 season resulted in us HOSTING the NFC Championship game in January 2008, and I really felt like I had the chance to watch something special; not only did I always dream of being able to savor a Superbowl victory, but this time possibly defeat an undefeated team to that point. I honestly think we could have beaten New England in the Superbowl as well if Favre had not thrown the most ridiculous pass in playoff history. (Jennings and Grant were WIDE FREAKING OPEN yet he underthrows into tight coverage to Donald Driver, gah)

Edit: OK most ridiculous pass in playoff history is Favre's INT to Brian Dawkins in the 2004 Divisional Playoff game @ Philadelphia, I'm sure Youse will remember that one nicely.

Dipset can get three weeks running highest spread score with a Bears cover tonight!

And congrats Neo, although I'm not so sure the Falcons won't let the Lions win out of pity. They're assured a road game in the first round regardless against a bad team, so they might play a ton of scrubs to both rest up their ballers and be nice to Detroit.

am I the only one thinking the Lions have a pretty good shot at a win? GB doesn't give a shit and the Lions do always yields for some entertaining game anyway.

would be so lol the Panthers one missed FG away from #1 seed and instead getting the 5.

Everyone that needed to lose for the Bears did so (Eagles, Vikings, Cowboys, Bucs) awful nice of you guys. Why do I have this feeling that we're going to fuck that gift up.

er, yeah, what was I thinking. I just remember looking at the Eagles' playoff scenarios BEFORE this week and realizing either TB or ATL had to lose this week because next week they are playing chumps. I just mixed up two major chumps. Anyway, wheat, if I thought Detroit could beat Falcons I'm definitely thinking they can do it, and rooting for them to beat the Packers. Mainly because I love Calvin. I would give one of my arms for him to be on the Eagles. We'd be the Super Bowl champs this year with him, almost undoubtedly.

How bout the rest of y'all? Rooting for or against Lions to be perfectly bad?

I'm pretty proud, given that everyone else was out by Week 6, and I still have a couple of good teams I never used (Giants, Ravens, Bucs, etc). Most people are saying it's because of the Lions, but I've only picked against them 4 times... 14/17 picks have been against the 7 lowest ranked teams, but you'd be an idiot to go against many others.
>_>

I'll post some other random stats next week, provided the Falcons win, lest I get screwed over like I did in Fantasy and rage quit again. PS Screw the Bears.

They played with as much intensity as the Eagles did in terms of fighting for an improbable playoff spot (aka NO intensity)-- only they were at home! Turns out 1 inch was the difference between the two teams' outcomes.

Post by: Quiet Bol on December 28, 2008, 10:43:00 pm
By request, I'll now look back on my preseason bets to see how they fared!

Dallas Cowboys UNDER 10.5 wins - Risked $500 to win $650 - WIN! (9-7), +$650
Oakland Raiders UNDER 6 wins - Risked $500 to win $550 - WIN! (5-11), +$550
Green Bay Packers OVER 8 wins - Risked $202.50 to win $150 - LOSS (5-11), -$202.50
Philadelphia Eagles OVER 8.5 wins - Risked $175 to win $100 - WIN! ( 9-6-1), +$100
Detroit Lions UNDER 6.5 wins - Risked $110 to win $100 - WIN! (0-16), +$100
Cleveland Browns UNDER 8 wins - Risked $100 to win $100 - WIN! (4-12), +$100
Tampa Bay Buccaneers OVER 8 wins - Risked $105 to win $75 - WIN! (9-7), +$75
Seattle Seahawks OVER 8.5 wins - Risked $87.50 to win $50 - LOSS (4-12), -$87.50
Baltimore Ravens OVER 6 wins - Risked $58 to win $40 - WIN! (11-5), +$40

Season Win Totals: 7-2, +$1325

The bet on the Eagles was the only one to come down to week 17. Some of the others look like close calls, but most were decided a while back. Raiders were 3-11 before finishing with 2 wins and getting to 5, not to mention that 6 would have pushed. They were certainly a long way from 7-9. Cowboys would have needed 3 straight wins over Giants/Ravens/Eagles to get to 11 wins, so that wasn't a great cause for concern. Weirdest of all, Bucs ran their record up to 9-3 before dumping the last 4 games of the season, but I'll take the win.

Justin Tuck UNDER 12.5 sacks - Risked $120 to win $100 - WIN! (12 sacks), +$100
Donovan McNabb to accrue more rushing + passing TDs than Aaron Rodgers - Risked $100 to win $100 - LOSS (25-32), -$100
Wes Welker UNDER 1050 yards receiving - Risked $80 to win $64 - LOSS (1165 yards), -$80
Wes Welker UNDER 8 receiving TDs - Risked $70 to win $50 - WIN! (3 TDs), +$50
Steve Slaton OVER 425 rushing yards - Risked $62.50 to win $50 - WIN! (1282 yards), +$50
Earnest Graham OVER 1000 rushing yards - Risked $57.50 to win $50 - LOSS (563 yards), -$57.50
Chester Taylor OVER 550 rushing yards - Risked $55 to win $50 - LOSS (399 yards), -$55
Brian Urlacher UNDER 6.5 sacks + ints - Risked $50 to win $50 - WIN! ( 0 sacks, 2 ints), +$50

Player Props: 4-4, -$42.50

Uh, I'm still not sure how I won the Tuck bet. I thought he had beaten 12.5 with a couple games to play but every source is telling me he had 12 sacks. Another stat correction in my favor? Graham was lost to a season ending injury but he was off-pace when it happened anyway. Slaton with a bit of overkill.

Clinton Portis to lead NFL in rushing yards - Risked $10 to win $500 - LOSS (4th with 1487 yards), -$10
DeSean Jackson to win Offensive Rookie of the Year - Risked $10 to win $250 - LOSS (undetermined, but safe to mark as a loss), -$10
Aaron Schobel to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $200  - LOSS (only 1 sack before getting injured in week 5), -$5
Kyle Vanden Bosch to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $100 - LOSS (only 4.5 sacks but also missed 6 games), -$5
Trent Cole to lead NFL in sacks - Risked $5 to win $90 - LOSS (9 sacks), -$5

Awards Futures: 0-5, -$35

I'm not unpleased with the first 2 bets. Clinton Portis, in particular, was leading the league in rushing halfway through, lost the lead, and then regained it in week 12. Unfortunately, he battled injuries over the last few weeks and fell off the podium. The sack leaders can be pretty random but those bets don't look very good in hindsight.

Adam "Pacman" Jones will be reinstated and will play in week 1, Risked $250 to win $100 - WIN, +$100
Kansas City to be the first team to defeat New England (week 1) - Risked $50 to win $700 - LOSS, -$50
Miami to be the first team to defeat New England (week 3) - Risked $100 to win $3500 - WIN, +$3500

Offseason bets: 2-1, +$3550

I guess I'm not sure why these are grouped together but they were made weeks before the season started and all were resolved early in the season. Maybe not fair to count the Pacman bet on my record of posted plays, since it was clearly going to win by the time I posted it. What a lucky win on those Dolphins!

Vikings to win the NFC North - Risked $480 to win $192 - WIN, +$192
Jets to win the AFC East - Risked $100 to win $120 - LOSS, -$100
Packers to win the NFC North - Risked $100 to win $140 - LOSS, -$100
Bucs to win the NFC South - Risked $50 to win $137.50 - LOSS, -$50

Mid-season Division Bets: 1-3, -$58

These were all bets I made midseason and they were all mathematically sound bets at the time, I swear! The Vikes bet was with 3 weeks to go, the others were placed with probably 6 games to go. These teams were generally being undervalued because they had a lot of tiebreaker advantages that weren't being accounted for, or in the Packers case, just because they're so much better than people realize. With the Jets and Bucs collapses though, the tiebreakers weren't enough, and the Vikes seemingly tried to blow it as well.

3 of these 4 teams with rookie coaches will make the playoffs - Redskins/Falcons/Dolphins/Ravens - Risked $50 to win $350 - WIN, +$350
49ers to win over 2.5 games under Mike Singletary - Risked $120 to win $100 - WIN, (5 wins!) +$100
Roy Williams under 4.5 TDs with the Cowboys - Risked $110 to win $100 - WIN, (1 TD) +$100
Pacman Jones will return from his suspension and play another game this season - Risked $20 to win $40 - WIN, +$40

Mid-season Team and Player Props: 4-0, +$590

The first one was a lucky hit but also a smart bet, as Shep and I independently found this offering and calculated it to be a profitable play based on multiple sets of published Playoff Odds. The bet on the 49ers came with 9 games left and many of them against weak opponents. I found the prop rather bizarre from the start, and though the Niners lost his first game at home vs the Seahawks, they still surged to a 5-4 finish under Singletary. Roy Williams became the odd man out in Dallas and never threatened to beat me. I only regret not betting against his yardage as well. Thanks Goodell, for allowing Pacman to come back not once, but twice this season, both profitable!

Eagles to win the Superbowl - Risked $100 to win $1100 - Undetermined
Ravens to win the Superbowl - Risked $20 to win $800 - Undetermined

I imagine even the Ravens bet is poor at this point, with both teams being 6 seeds and needing to win 3 road games + Superbowl. I give both teams a good shot vs anybody in the playoffs, but considering fair odds on the Giants last year were about 200-1 from the 6 seed, I could surely do better. Both of these bets were made very early in the season, before the Ravens were deemed a serious threat, and when I still believed the Eagles could win the division and earn a bye. Still, I thought the bet was foolish immediately. Time to get lucky!

Overall on this season's multi-week wagers:
14-15, +$5329.50 with 2 wagers pending

Boom?

Title: 2008 NFL Picks, Discussion, and Betting Topic
Post by: rshepherd1000 on December 29, 2008, 03:20:00 pm
as requested here are my preseason bets ...

College Football

Season Wins

Arizona State Under 8.5 regular season wins -140 - WIN
Arkansas Under 6 regular season wins -150 - WIN
BYU Over 9 regular season wins -170 - WIN
Colorado Under 6 regular season wins +120 - WIN
Miami Florida Under 8 regular season wins -175 - WIN
Michigan Under 8 regular season wins -200 - WIN

Cant complain at all about this return. None of these were really close.

Player Props

Tim Tebow Under 18.5 Rushing TD's Regular Season -120 - WIN

This didnt end up being that close either, but Tebow is such a crazy guy that the bet was never completely safe.

NFL

Season Wins

Baltimore Ravens Over 6    wins -123 - WIN
Cleveland Browns under 8 wins +110 - WIN
Dallas Cowboys Under 10.5 wins +121 - WIN
Detroit Lions under 6.5 wins +115 - WIN
Oakland Raiders Under 6.5 wins -163 - WIN
Philadelphia Eagles Over 8.5 wins -175 - WIN
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Over 8 wins -117 - WIN
Green Bay Packers over 8 wins -140 - LOSS
Seattle Seahawks Over 8.5 wins -156 - LOSS

Denver Broncos -1 wins vs Detroit Lions -180 - WIN

I'd make all of these bets again, minus Philadelphia perhaps given the juice. Seattle obviously looks awful but was a reasonable wager at the time it was made. The Packers really should have been a win. Dallas was probably the riskiest bet before the season as we were relying on team chemistry blowups and injuries, which did indeed transpire in abundance but could not have.

Team Futures

Baltimore Ravens to win div +850 - LOSS
Houston Texans to make the playoffs +800 - LOSS

Very happy with the Ravens bet. The Texans panned out pretty much as I expected them to. I thought they'd start slow and pick up to the end of the year as their schedule improved. With a little luck I hoped theyd pick up an extra couple of wins at the start of the year and get a wild card spot. This was a fair risk given the price and how awful the Titans should have been!

Team Props

Baltimore Ravens Over 17.5 pass interceptions +100 - WIN
Dallas Cowboys Under 22 pass interceptions -165 - WIN
Oakland Raiders Under 18 pass interceptions -165 - WIN
Miami Dolphins Under 14 pass interceptions -130 - LOSS

Chicago Bears Under 40 sacks -150 - WIN
Detroit Lions Under 36.5 sacks -150 - WIN
Miami Dolphins Under 32.5 sacks    -140 - LOSS

St Louis Rams Over 31.5    sacks allowed -125 - WIN

Happy with all these, although Miami overperforming by so much was obviously unexpected and annoying.

Player Futures

Clinton Portis to lead the NFL in rushing yards during the 2008 regular season 50/1 - LOSS
David Akers to lead kickers in points during the 2008 regular season 25/1 - LOSS

Both these were good bets. Portis led the league in rushing for a long time before getting injured and was clearly much better than 50/1. The Akers bet hasnt been officially graded but as far as I know he ended up coming 3rd, close behind Gostkowski and Bironas. Gost was always the favourite, but with a little better out of the Eagles offense in that miserable middle of the season and Akers would have won this. Of course had Brady not got hurt its possible Gost would have got more too.

Player Props

Andre Hall Under 460 Rushing Yards -120 - WIN
Chris Johnson Over 575 Rushing Yards -145 - WIN
Steve Slaton Over 425 Rushing Yards -120 - WIN
Michael Turner Under 1060 Rushing Yards    -115 - LOSS

Brad Smith Under 430 Receiving Yards -115 - WIN
Jeremy Shockey Under 675 Receiving Yards -115 - WIN
LJ Smith Under 600 Receiving Yards -125 - WIN
Calvin Johnson Under 1050 Receiving Yards -130 - LOSS
Devin Hester Under 625 Receiving Yards -125 - LOSS

Leon Washington Under 675 Rushing & Receiving Yards -115 - LOSS

Torry Holt Under 91 Receptions -140 - WIN

Donovan McNabb +12.5 Touchdown Passes vs Tony Romo -200 - WIN
Peyton Manning -1.5 Touchdown Passes vs Tony Romo -185 - LOSS

Vince Young Under 3 Rushing Touchdowns +105 - WIN

Donald Driver Over 4.5 Receiving Touchdowns -140 - WIN

Chris Johnson Over 3.5 Total Touchdowns    -140 - WIN
Julius Jones Over 4 Total Touchdowns -115 - LOSS

Julian Peterson Under 9 Sacks -115 - WIN
Justin Tuck Under 12.5 Sacks -125 - WIN
Jamaal Anderson Over 3.5 Sacks     -115 - LOSS

Brian Urlacher Under 6.5 Sacks+Interceptions +100 - WIN

Im happy with most of these too. Still have absolutely no idea how the Tuck bet won but I'll take it. I probably sucked out on McNabb vs Romo given his injury, and had no business coming close to winning the Peyton vs Romo bet (had Dungy not benched Peyton after one series this could easily have won). I underrated Romo at the time I made the bets. The Turner under looks fairly dumb but all evidence points to long time #2 running backs usually not gaining 1,000 yard seasons when they are given a starting opportunity. The Roy Williams trade hurt the Calvin bet but I think I was well on the way to losing that one anyway.

Mid season Props

(19th Nov) 3 rookie coaches to make the Playoffs +750 - WIN

(19th Nov) Neither Warner/Brees to throw for 5000 yards or more -200 - LOSS

The rookie coach bet was always going to need a little luck to hit exactly 3, but we were getting much better odds than expectation at the time. The problem was that the 4 contending teams (Ravens/Falcons/Dolphins/Redskins) were in many scenarios knocking each other out. Sadly the Pats had to pay the price for this bet winning (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ffrown.gif&hash=9bb8520656650a7c2457ae0ae2ee8996e4109fd6) The Warner/Brees bet was basically on Brees and was probably fine at the time. He really had no business covering it with even one game to go!

Alecboys picks

Fading Alec's picks - WIN

For a few weeks of the season I got Alec to give me his picks against the spread, did a little line shopping, and faded them for a fun $5 unit a time. I came out ahead $10 which isnt really significant given natural variance. Indeed my own picks ATS (that I put money on - not the yahoo fun thing) were barely profitable this year, despite routinely beating closing lines. Not enough evidence therefore to conclude that fading Alec is in any way correct, but its still enjoyable!

Great wrapups, Shep and Neo! Also very impressed with Neo, mikers, and myself for what ended up being pretty decisive victories in the three pools for this season.

Here is the final table for Pigskin Pick'Em (weeks 10-17 shown).
