Title: Elite & Friends Fantasy Hockey 2008
Post by: youseinthehouse on September 26, 2008, 02:27:00 am
As the well-respected amongst you all are most surely aware, the time of year when the best sport ever created is rolling around again. It is said by many a scholar that God Himself would have created the Earth entirely without water if He didn't feel the need to play the great game of hockey every now and again on the cloud-tops. ("Jesus saves, this time literally! And Good wins the shootout AGAIN, 3 - 0! Or is it 1+1+1 - 0. That's another topic.")

At any rate, I've determined from numerous sources that there is hearty interest in starting up a so-called "fantasy" version of this great game within this fine community. So far, either directly or through the grapevine, I've discovered that Come, Dayle, Infil, Goose, PDO, Alec, Shade, and the one and only QB are up for the hearty competition. I can easily round out four more people between myself and others I've met in what's known as "in real life" to create a nice dodecahedron of teams, with each face of said polyhedron focused on one thing: ultimate glory.

There are a few things at hand we ought to discuss as a governing body, rather than myself making each decision proper:

1. Money or no money? Last year we all placed a wager on the league, and Come took down a nice prize for his efforts. This was mainly because my erstwhile league including so-called "real-life" friends was dropping off in terms of participation throughout the course of a season; we thought a small pot would keep teams hawking at the waiver-wire and crafting elaborate trade proposals all year long. The introduction of Eliters, patrons who quite obviously do nothing else besides sit at the computer all day long regardless, proved that the money didn't need to be there in order for participation. Coupled with the fact that I will keep the "real-life" pool down to certifiably enormous hockey fan friends of mine, I don't see money being necessary at all for competition's sake. In fact, the money wasn't even my idea last year, but I had to be the one organizing everything as the central hub of personalities contained within the league, which I wasn't thrilled about... especially considering ye olde well-documented snafu with QB rotating guys faster than all of your mothers combined. This one's up for vote nevertheless.

2. Draft Time? This one's obvious. Just state when works for you, and when doesn't. The largest cross section of "works-for-me"s will probably take it.

3. Scoring Format. Well we're definitely going to abandon last year's dreaded head-to-head system, which many of us were heartily against from the start. The old commissioner, who wishes he had a third of the wisdom as the fictional and seemingly omnipresent MTL commissioner, thought H2H was a good idea. Never again, as QB showed how incredibly broken it was without a maximum games cap (which I believe was possible but could not be instituted after the season began). At any rate, I was considering the old standby, Rotisserie, where each team accumulates yearlong statistics, and gets a proportional number of points for each stat based on their relative standing within the league. However, when I went to create the league, I noticed a separate option, which could be new for this year-- I haven't set up a league in a long time, so I'm unsure: A "Points" league.

This system, eerily similar yet a world apart from Rotisserie, works on the same basis yet can assign different weights to different statistical categories. For instance, the Y! default Points settings, give goals 3 points each, assists 2, Plus/Minus 1, PIM .5 each (1 point per minor penalty, 2.5 points per fight, this is obviously terrible and could be changed, as no way should a fight be equivalent to a goal... you can forget about those fighting & misconduct & game misconduct & instigator = 27 PIM = 13.5 points = 4.5 goals scenario!), PPP 1 point, SOG .4 points. Goalies default to -1 GA each, .2 each save, 2 each shutout... also something that seems out of whack to yours truly.

Personally I'm intrigued and enamoured about this scoring system, but I do feel it would be quite difficult to find a balance for the categories. I'd like a feeler vote from you all as to your thoughts on it. NOBODY DISCUSS SPECIFIC POINT VALUES YET UNTIL WE DECIDE WE WANT TO GO THIS ROUTE! We will get the points right if we decide that way. Let's first just decide Roto v. Points by essentially all voting if we think it would work or not. I'm definitely on the fence... especially keeping in mind that Roto is a steady companion that would never hurt us.

Kindly chime in on each point, numbered [1-3] above. Also, the list of players I gave is by no means final. If you're on that list and don't want in, chime in. If you're not on that list and want in, chime in.

Edit... damn thing pointed out the symbols for Plus/Minus so I had to verbalize it.

Don't worry, I didn't express interest, nor do I have any.

If this league doesn't really require anything other than drafting players then I might be interested.

Roto is the best option if we decide to stray from H2H. I don't mind the H2H as long as we get the waiver and max move settings correct this year :P

Any draft time in the morning/early afternoon is fine for me, depending on the date.

I think we'll get more of the people that actually want in (DK/Infil/Dayle) if we do no money, which is also fine by me since then I don't have to care as much about defending my title.

I'll be doing it obviously.

Playing for money, even if it's a tiny amount, creates too much conflict of interest for me, especially if I am forced to draft players that I hate. If we play for fun, I'll do it if the draft time ends up working for me.

Great, no money it is then and we're leaning towards Roto. Let's get that final list of everyone who's in and get the party started! Start posting draft times that work for you, people!

It's on like Donkey Kong!

Weekend mornings work the best, as during the week I have an 80-mile commute to work. Could possibly do early afternoon during the week, but since my work is entirely dependent on things out of my control I can't guarantee that I will be home at a certain time, just that it's likely on certain days that I might be home then.

My schedule is pretty flexible, I would try to deal with any draft time.

League ID: 64663
pw: flyers

Get up in that stuff as soon as possible all who're playing. The draft is set for Friday at 1:30 Eastern, so 12:30 Central, 11:30 MT, 10:30 Pac. This works out with everyone except possibly Dayle. I'd be happy to move the draft to Saturday if she cannot make this time. The season actually starts overseas on Saturday is the reason why it's set for Friday right now (with most of the league not beginning play until NEXT thursday).

So far we haven't heard form PDO, Infil, or Alec about doing it. Also pack is a good fantasy sports player and presumably from Wisconsin. Should like hockey, no???

I'll listen to debate over the following points. Include SHP as a category or not (currently not because the skaters already have 6 categories-- I didn't want too much imbalance between skaters and goalies). Include SOG as a category or not (potentially replacing it with SHP or just not using it). Include Saves as a goalie stat (Right now it's S%, GAA, W, SO for them).

pack is FROM Wisconsin but has been living in California for a number of years now, so I'm thinking he wouldn't be looking to join.

PDO is excited about the season and will sign up, but can't make it home Friday until 4pm Central. He could make a draft at any time on Saturday however.

Infil will arrive shortly to give his thoughts.

UPDATE - Infil is sad to say that he's going to have to pass on this season of fantasy due to too heavy a workload at school.  However, he'd like to be talked into joining anyways.

thanks Youse. I'm locked and loaded. I can hit pretty much any draft time before 1pm EST on any day other than Tuesday/Thursday, so Saturday at 12 or 1pm works great.

Hm, what's with the 4 D spots? Seems like too much to me but I guess it's standard now?

I'd say keep SOG over SHP (SHP is too much like CG in baseball, just random). Saves for goalie is up to you, would just add more balance if goalies had 5 categories instead of 4.

No way I'll make it, 11:30 is way too early considering the 80-mile commute at 7am.

Changed to Saturday at 1:30 Eastern.

The four D spots also threw me for a loop, but yes, it was default. I was going to change it to 3, but I thought of an actual hockey team, with a 3:2 forwards to D relationship... so it's the same in fantasy. That was reason enough for me to keep it, but I'll move it to 3 if we get more than 10 total players or something. Also I added the Util, can't believe that wasn't default.

Ngamer, thanks for the info. YOU should join up, you are much more than welcome! I've got to get to work on that Infil, I've likely the same work load as him so I might be able to "slip him a convincer".
