Also, just placed $200 (to win $230) on the Red Sox to win their series with the Angels, so I'll be rooting Bosox for the next 3 or 4 games. Shouldn't take any longer than that! And with pack's post we've officially had all 8 teams predicted to win the Series. Actually now that I look at it pack's was only the 8th pick- not a single agreement on a winner until Goose! Ha, what a crazy postseason this is going to be.

FUCK YEAH PHILLIES.
Those brewers in 4 (WTF? CC can't pitch em all) picks should be sweating this one out. You're going to need consecutive wins from Bush and Suppan in addition to some fly paper to line your fielders' gloves and hands with. Yeah, that could happen.

Is there not a lock on submitting for this contest? ;-)

There is so much luck in the playoffs that any set of picks are good imo. The postseason is a whole different thing compared to the regular season. I wouldn't be surprised if TB wins the World Series.
-
Rofl at all the Cubs predicitons!
-
I nominate Brett Myers for best at-bat of the infant 2k8 MLB postseason.
Did you see CC see that?
-
yeah, that was pretty awesome. More responsible for the 4 runs than the guy who hit the GS.. almost!
also
DODGERS!!! yay (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Youse, if only one of the following four things could happen in the next 365 days, which would you choose?
* The Philadelphia Flyers hoist the 2009 Stanley Cup
* The Philadelphia Eagles take home the Vince Lombardi trophy for 2008
* The Philadelphia Phillies win the 2008 Fall Classic
* The Philadelphia 76ers emerge from the NBA Finals victorious in June of 2009

Hooooray! I didn't come in thinking we'd have any real shot to win this series outright, and I still don't think so, but I was really hoping we'd be able to win tonight and at least get to have both home games. Tomorrow should be really cool- this one was kind of ah "oh well, no biggie" result for the Phils, but if they drop another they know they're going to be going up against CC once again, and this time on more than three days rest. Even with home field advantage that's not prospect you'd be looking forward to! Plus Jenny was down at this game, would have been a shame for it to not end well.
Now come on Dodgers, let's end the Cub's postseason with one fewer win than Milwaukee's!
-
Yeah, despite the Phillies playing pretty terrible today, I was still feeling good about the prospect of facing Gagne and Torres. For the most part, they didn't disappoint in terms of edge-of-your-seat innings, but in the end the sweep wasn't to be. I've got to admit, I am already pretty nervous about facing an angry CC looking to get revenge (though we'd have an even more well-rested Cole Hamels going), so we absolutely MUST take care of business tomorrow. Blanton can't give up the walks we were giving up all day today, and the invisible Utley/Rollins are really going to have to contribute so we can just get this over with.
Re: Championships. That's funny, because one of my friends asked me this exact question the other day and it's one of the hardest questions I can think of (not having to do with quantum physics or thermodynamics or abstract algebra or Shakespeare or global economy, etc.)
Well, so the Sixers are definitely fourth in this debate, no question. That said, I watch a fair amount of Sixers games (the most I've watched in a season is probably around 30 (the AI/Webber experiment year), but I average about 15 + every playoff game if any). I had a lot of fun watching the young team develop last year, toppling Boston at Boston, Detroit at Detroit, Phoenix, etc. etc. in some big upset games down the stretch. We'll definitely be contenders for top 3 in the conference this season.
As much as I love the Phillies (and as truly ridiculous the amount of time I blow watching them or listening to them every year is), they have to be #3. I try to watch them whenever I'm not busy doing anything else, or even sometimes when I am busy doing something else! And if I'm driving while they're on, they're guaranteed to be on my radio, which has been pretty often now that I have a long commute. I would go absolutely nuts with a World Series victory, but I'm just more passionate about football and hockey, where the true difficulty in answering comes up.
Hockey is my favorite sport, there are fewer commercials during the action (but plenty during intermission), the game is more paced (no standing around for 30 seconds between plays), and there are more games in an equally demanding athletic context. Additionally in hockey, a championship in my opinion means a LOT more. A victorious team has to survive FOUR BEST-OF-SEVEN ROUNDS. In football, you can make the playoffs as a slightly-better-than-mediocre team, more or less luck your way to win four playoff games (three if you're elite) and be done. Recent examples include the Pats in 2001, the Steelers, and the Giants last year. Hockey makes the best team prove that they're the best team.
On the other side of this coin, football has that "anything can happen" situation. Take the Falcons over the Vikings in the 199? NFC Championship game when the Vikes were double digit favorites and blew it. Hell, again, take the Giants last year. Football is exciting as anything, and boy do I bleed green. It's disgusting how many Cowboys fans, Giants fans, and even Redskins fans I'm friends with. Every year I have to put up with jokes about how many Super Bowls the Eagles have ever won (to which I always retort "who has more NFL Championships? (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)"). Since 2004, I've had to hear how McNabb isn't clutch and how we'll never be able to produce on the big stage. The Flyers have won multiple Cups before, the Eagles have not won any Super Bowls before.
All of this is just stalling, like I did when my friend asked me. The true answer is found when I stopped asking myself what the facts were and I started asking myself what does my heart say. My heart says that if only one of the things you mentioned were allowed to happen, I would want it to be a Super Bowl. The only Cup Finals I was of age for was a sweep. The only Super Bowl I was alive for was an amazing near miss that I watched with 20 people. It was a truly great moment in my life when we went up 7-0 and for the first time felt like, "hey, this is possible". I might be happier, internally, with a Cup, but nothing would galvanize this area more than a Super Bowl. The happiness would be palpable and would last for months or maybe years. It'd be a huge monkey off our back being the last one in the division to take down the crown.
I'd go insanely wild either way and definitely attend the parade and go more wild. And then get some sleep and then wake up and go wild all day again.
Also, my answer might have been different if you'd asked me in April :-D

Lol gg Angels. Way to be able to bunt a strike right down the middle.
-
I found myself rooting for the Rays even moreso than the Cubs in the DS. Guess I'm a sellout.
-
I'm rooting for the Rays more than the Phils. I've also been meaning to buy a Rays cap since before the season started and soon I'll look like a huge bandwagoner after they win the World Series. You guys make me sad.
This is the era of no home team pride, I guess, effected by some combination of fantasy, gambling, and ESPN. I'm not judging, you, I'm just shedding a tear for days gone by.
-
I'm all for the low payroll teams!
-
I don't have money on the Rays now! I just like them more!
I was a pretty big Phillies fan growing up, back in the Dykstra/Kruk/Dalton days, but after the strike, there was a long period where I didn't care about baseball, and I became unfamiliar with the Phillies roster. I like most of the guys on the team now (maybe everybody but Myers), but I just can't get myself to care about the team for some reason. I will feel happy for the city at least, if the Phillies can surprise me and win a championship. Heck, I'm even strangely proud when I see a Ryan Howard subway commercial. I think he's a fine young man and a great representative for the team and the city, as are most of our players.
The Eagles are really the only team I still root for like I'm a kid. It feels like they bring the whole community together when they win or send us all into depression with a poor year.
-
Yeah, I hear you about the Eagles, and thoroughly agree about Ryan Howard. What a down to earth guy for being so awesome. Unfortunately he's up for arbitration again soon and there's talk the Phillies might just get rid of him than pay him the ungodly amount he will undoubtedly be awarded. I fucking hope not.
Here's the numbers for local television ratings on the Eagles/Skins game versus a POSSIBLE (and actual, speaking with hindsight) SERIES CLINCHING GAME for the Phillies. Averages throughout both games (which both started and ended at almost the same exact time) were 300,000 share for the Phillies and 900,000 share for the Eagles. Utterly ridiculous given the situations, but definitely proves your point! I personally brought my TV downstairs and we had them both on at the same time, listening to the Phillies for the most part since we synced up the visual feed with the radio so we could listen to Harry Kalas, LA, & Wheels instead of TBS's jokes of announcers.
Another thing that proves your point is that like I said, I was watching both games at the same time. Despite how happy I should have been feeling afterwards, I instead felt a slew of disappointment from the Green Team mixed in with the "fuck yeah" I was getting from the Red Team. The two games ended literally within 30 seconds of one another...
-
Eh, not really a fair ratings comparison though, with MLB being on TBS while the NFL option was right there on FOX for anyone to see, though I'm sure the Eagles would have drawn the bigger crowd regardless. I don't see that as a knock on baseball so much as a credit to how the NFL is just in a whole different league compared to anything else in sports/entertainment right now.
So anyways, the Final Four is set! Phils play host to the Dodgers in a 7 game series that just kicked off a few minutes ago, while the Red Sox travel to Tampa to start their 7 game set 24 hours from now. My bracket has the Phillies but I like the Dodgers well enough, so either outcome would be okay with me there... on the other side, though, definitely going to be rooting heavily for the Rays.
octo, how about for scoring if we use a 1 - 2 - 4 system, BUT, you get double points for that result if you pred it perfectly, as in having said "Dodgers over the Cubs in 3 games"?
-
the rays-sox game was crazy last night. people are definitely going nuts for the rays down here. i was at the lightning's home opener and when they flashed favorable score updates, the crowd cheered like goals had just been scored. they projected it on the outside of the st. pete forum after the game where people camped out and watched the game.
-
I was at a bar/restaurant during game 3 of the NLDS between the Philles and the Brewers and everyone was going as nuts as I'd ever see a crowd get; just as wild as the bar got last year when Green Bay beat Denver in one play in OT (82 yard bomb to Jennings). It was nice to see them win and it was nice to see that stupid 25 year losing streak snapped.
