We're back for another year of fantasy golf! It looks like there have been some improvements over the 08 version in terms of the game being more user-friendly. Anyway, begin at this link: http://golf.fantasysports.yahoo.com/golf (http://golf.fantasysports.yahoo.com/golf)
Make a team and then join an existing group.
Group ID: 2076
Pass: apples
Hopefully guys like Topes/Lobos/pack etc return once again. You have until Jan 8 to sign up if you want to make the entire season.

I follow the PGA. Tell me a little about how this works and why it's worth participating in.

Yeah I guess that would be a good idea wouldn't it.. basically you are selecting 8 golfers (2 from the A group like Tiger, Phil, Sergio etc, 4 from the B group like Appleby/Toms/Love III etc, 2 from the C group like Donald/Crain etc) every week that are entered into that week's PGA Tour tournament that you think will shoot the best score (most under par for the week). You might have to do a bit of research (pgatour.com, check tee times) to make sure all the guys you select are entered (occasionally yahoo messes this up).
Anyway, you can change guys within each group for each day (usually Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday). A player gets 20 points for having the best round of the day (say 63), and 2 points are taken off for each shot over the best round (18 pts for shooting 64, 16 pts for shooting 65.. 10 for 68.. 0 for 73 and worse). Half your golfers are on the bench each round (you play 1 from A, 2 from B, 1 from C). Usually you'll average around 40 points per day with your 4 golfers. It can vary depending how well the best golfer does relative to the rest of the field. I think one day last season I only got 8 points before cuts were made or something horrible like that (yeah most golfers were 10+ shots off the best round, it happens more than you think). You can get up to 80 points in a day.
There are bonuses for having your golfers placed in the top 3 (20 points for 1st, 10 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd). You only need to play a golfer 1 round to qualify for a bonus. If any of your golfers miss the cut, they will automatically get 0 pts for every round after the cut is set (usually Saturday/Sunday). Same case if you play a golfer that isn't entered in that tournament (happens to a lot of inactives). It's important to have a good balance of golfers, ones that have consistency as well as high likelyhood of winning the tournament. A group you definitely want to aim for the one that has the best chance to win, B group for consistency, C group for making the cut.
The biggest twist to the game is that you can only play a golfer 1+ rounds of a tournament 10 times throughout the season (sorry, can't abuse Tiger every week). Of course Tiger (hint hint) may not even play 10 tournaments this upcoming season. There are 37 tournaments in the fantasy season (12 winter, 12 spring, 13 summer) or something like that.
Finally, the objective of the game is to score more points than anyone else over the 37 weeks. If you average around, say, 150 points/week, then a good score to aim for would be 5550 pts. I forget how much I got, but I know I was over 5000 for sure. Along with your group ranking, you are also ranked among all yahoo users and 4 experts in a percentile (I was in the 98 percentile last season). If you stay active throughout the whole season, you should have little trouble being over 90 percentile.
It would be great to see you join, Clark.

It's already time for this again... 36 weeks or something... man...
-
alright, i joined. eli (old challenge 30 partner) has been invited, too. how many people played last year?
some questions:
how are groups A, B, and C determined?
so you only use up one of your players 10 usages if he plays 2+ rounds?
where do you usually find out whose playing in upcoming tournaments? i noticed i could pick tiger for the mercedes-benz - wtf?
-
I would play again but:
a) I can't ensure I'll be able to make picks for 38 straight weeks
b) Boss doesn't want me to play

There were around 7 or so of us that had good finishes at the end of the season, out of around 17.
Yahoo determined who's in the 3 groups.
A player gets a usage if you had him inserted for 1 round during the week (and he at least tee'd off that round). You don't get a strike against usage if he didn't play that round. Guys on your bench do not get usages either.
Yahoo will usually have some indication in the Notes column if they are entered for that week. But like I said before, it's best to check pgatour.com before each tournament starts to make sure your guys are entered.
Yes goose you can join again. It's open to anyone. The hardest part is committing yourself to 38 weeks of picking players and changing around during the tournament. That's what turns people off from it as the season progresses. Shep did fairly well just going with his Thursday guys if you want to just play it out that way.

more people need to join up!
TWO days til the season starts

lol sucks

I joined... but there's only 3 other teams?
a shame
