Title: 2008 NFL Playoffs [Final Results]
Post by: Ngamer on January 06, 1999, 04:31:00 pm
Wild Card Weekend Wrap Up

The Elite said...

Colts - 15
Chargers - 7
Result: Chargers - 23, Colts - 17 (OT)

Ravens - 12
Dolphins - 10
Result: Ravens - 27, Dolphins - 9

Falcons - 17
Cardinals - 5
Result: Cardinals - 30, Falcons - 24

Eagles - 13
Vikings - 9
Result: Eagles - 26, Vikings - 14

The only blowout was the game we were most uncertain about.  The one game that we collectively thought was a lock we were wrong about.  Also had way too much confidence in the Colts and way too little in the Eagles... all in all a horrible showing for us!  Let's see where that leaves us for

Current Prediction Standings

Im Ngamer (4:25:21 AM): updating playoff picks
Im Ngamer (4:25:55 AM): holy crap, Alec picked the Colts, Dolphins, Falcons, and Vikings

The Chargers have just finished one of the most unlikely runs to the playoffs ever, which means the field is set for the '08 playoffs!  Now's the time to post your predictions for all 4 of next weekend's Wild Card playoff games.  And those are...

AFC
5. Colts (12-4)
at
4. Chargers (8-8)

6. Ravens (11-5)
at
3. Dolphins (11-5)

NFC
5. Falcons (11-5)
at
4. Cardinals (9-7)

6. Eagles (9-6-1)
at
3. Vikings (10-6)
---

Pick 'em!

(Remember that we only pick one week at a time in the NFL, because there's no set bracket and so we don't know which team will play the #1 and #2 seeds next week.)

And the top two seeds who get to have a bye through this first weekend are

AFC
1. Titans (13-3)
2. Steelers (12-4)

NFC
1. Giants (12-4)
2. Panthers (12-4)
---

So now that the whole field is set, let's take a glance back at how good everyone's Superbowl Preds are looking, shall we?

wheat: 49ers over Jets - wow, this looks even dumber than he already realized it would be when he made it!

Jimbo: Packers over Jets - nice try Jim, but this dream matchup was not to be

QB: Eagles over Patriots - amazingly the first part still has a chance; too bad the Pats got shafted

Matt H: Patriots over Giants - again, decent pick as both teams looked very good heading down the stretch, but the Pats didn't quite make the cut

DK: Chargers over Cowboys - again, it's incredible that the first part of the pred still has a chance, but the Cowboys are (thankfully!) out of the picture for '08

Come: Colts over Buccaneers - looked like a solid pred a few weeks back, but the Bucs flat out imploded down the stretch and couldn't even take care of the lowly Raiders to punch their playoff ticket

Youse: Eagles over Patriots - copycat

Ngamer: Chargers over Saints - whoops! it took a miracle for the first part to stay alive, and for the second, despite Brees and the Saints passing attacking being fantastic, the D was too awful to earn a playoff spot

Third: Chargers over Eagles - oh man, luckiest call ever! imagine the odds he could have gotten on both of these making the playoffs 5 weeks ago... would be so funny if they DID end up playing for the title

octo: Chargers over Vikings - came within just a few plays of neither of these being in contention, but as is octo's still alive!

afan: 49ers over Raiders - there were about 428 problems with this pick right from the start

Shep: Eagles over Ravens - came pretty close to neither getting their wildcards, but they're both still around and keeping Shep alive for now

drag: Buccaneers over Patriots - oh noes! what looked like a great pred 4-5 weeks ago instead blew up in drag's face this weekend; what a shame!

Alec: Patriots over Vikings - shockingly still has a chance to be half right for the first time in his playoff predicting career

mikers: Chargers over Cowboys - seemed a sure thing that only one of these would make the playoffs... but ended up being the OTHER one

Goose: Lions over Dolphins - holy smokes, still has a chance to be 1/2 correct!

SZ: Patriots over Cowboys - awww, nice try though

Neo: Colts over Cowboys - Tony Romo collapsed in the post-game shower after being told that Neo made this prediction

1. COLTS - I think it's safe to say Manning is gonna light up San Diego's secondary worse than the Chargers have seen all year. Their 9-game winning streak scares the hell out of me and I really think Indy ends up representing the AFC in the Superbowl this year.

2. RAVENS

3. CARDINALS - OK I'm with QB here, not entirely sure why I'm picking Arizona, but it's hard to make a case as to how Atlanta is gonna be able to cover Arizona's receivers, especially in the comfort of their own home for a change. It was nice seeing Atlanta rebound from last year and make the playoffs, but they'll be one and done at the hands of Arizona.

4. EAGLES - This is a no brainer, Minnesota sucks and Childress is retarded; not only that but Philadelphia is on FIRE and really ought to use their luck as house-money and gamble on every play. Gogogo Eagles, make it to the NFC title game @ Carolina!

Colts

First of all, as bad as the Chargers were this season they were a heck of a lot better than the Broncos and deserved to be in (week 2 or whatever BS that was). Now for those Colts... their schedule was darn soft lately, and they looked awful to start the season but have obv been impressive and should be feared! The colts won in the regular season in SD, barely, but as much momentum as the bolts have, the colts have more. I don't see how SD wins it, and if they do it'll be an ugly one.

Ravens

I'm sorry, but the the Fins 11-5 is just too much for me to handle. Yes, they pull off some nice close victories.. over some shafty teams half the team. Ravens are too studly on defense for the petty Dolphins to do enough, and I think the Ravens will manage to score enough to win this game.

Falcons

What a boring game, IMO. Maybe b/c I don't know anything about either. I think the Cardinals are pathetic - but they have some threats and showed up today. They could show up again and look like they did first half of the season.. but I think it'll be fun to pick all the away teams, so I'll continue the trend

Eagles

Vikings won another very soft division, and I give them little to no credit against the Eagles, who I think made it in much more miraciously than the Chargers did. I don't see how the Vikings win a darn playoff game, ugh.

How fun, all 4 wild cards! Just shows how pitiful some divisions were this year, wow. 49ers will return to the playoffs next year, mark my words!

In the big picture, I think the Colts and Eagles have the best shot to go far out of the wildcards. The top seeds all look vulnerable, too, and a week off can be disastrous

1. Colts - It's insanity that the Chargers are even in the playoffs (though considering the first Broncos game, I guess I'll let it slide), not to mention the fact that a 12-4 team has to visit an 8-8 team, but that just goes to show you how retarded the seeding is in the NFL. I'd be fine with it if we were a shoe-in, but we're anything but! A Chargers win wouldn't surprise me at all, but there's no way I can even consider picking against the Colts this early. Short of another 6-INT performance from Manning, this doesn't even deserve to be a contest.

2. Ravens - Kind of funny how the Dolphins can turn it around so dramatically, and are now set to play the lone team they beat last year... I really, really hope the Dolphins play a flawless game and pull this one out, but it's hard to see them doing it against the Ravens. Backing them, but rooting for the 'Fins!

3. Falcons - I still have some lingering hatred of the Falcs from the Vick era, and I do have a fondness for Warner... but given much of the Cards recent play, I'll have to go with the Falcons here. A win by either won't be shocking to me in the least, so whatever.

4. Eagles - I still don't know how the hell they made the playoffs, but whatever. Vikings are lucky enough to come from what turned out to be a pretty shitty divison imo, and after the absolute trouncing the Eagles gave the Cowboys today, I see them doing something similiar here.

Didn't think I'd be picking 4 away teams, but there you go!

I could have sworn we picked the entire post-season right now in previous years, so I'll do that again here, even though I'll re-pick with everyone else next week.

Titans > Ravens, Colts > Steelers, Panthers > Falcons, Giants > Eagles
Colts > Titans, Giants > Panthers
Colts > Giants

(I just want to see Manning v Manning, tbh)

Nay, we've always picked one week at a time, although you seem to have a habit of picking the whole post-season regardless.

Here's last year's playoffs for those who would like to look back:

Colts - The Colts are the team to beat heading into the playoffs. Im actually fairly sick that they are playing the Chargers already as it should be an epic game and is probably worthy of the conference championship given the quality of the two teams right now. In fact Id probably pick the Chargers over any of the remaining sides in the playoffs. Rivers is clutch but so is Peyton, I just dislike the Chargers D here.

Ravens - Watch the Dolphins win the SB somehow. They have no right being in the Playoffs and I fully expect the Ravens D to shut down their gimmicky offense, exposing their complete lack of quality. The concern is that Flacco might fold under pressure and I do expect this game to be tight. That being said the Ravens are the better team.

Falcons - This will likely be a shootout or a turnoverament. In the former I like the Falcons a bit more due to the variety in their offense, in the latter I obviously like Matt Ryan more than Kurt Turnover.

Eagles - Their are countless ways Philadelphia will find to not win this game. Fortunately the Vikings will have beaten them to most of these already.

Colts- As hot as Peyton Manning and company have been, and it's in Indy, I just can't see a team that just got in on the skin of their teeth defeating arguably the hottest team in the league.
Dolphins- This team has proved us all wrong time and time again. Chad Pennington especially, I'm taking Miami.
Vikings- They were initially my NFC winner at the beginning of the season. I can't go back on my pick, can I?
Falcons- Seeing as how the Cardinals haven't been too impressive lately, and they won the NFC West in rathe rugly fashion, I'm going with the Falcons, who could've easily had a bye week.

Shep, is that to win the Championship, or just make it to the SB?

In other news, quote from the DVOA that I don't think should come as a surprise but I wanted to post anyway:

* Green Bay ends up with 8.9 Pythagorean wins, which means the difference between their actual win-loss percentage and the Pythagorean projection is -.183. The Packers end up ranking as the ninth most "unlucky" team since the 1970 merger. As you might expect, eight of the other nine teams in the top ten improved the following year, most by three wins or more.

Also, here are the final regular season rankings in terms of strength of schedule. These are adjusted to NOT include results against yourself (for instance the Lions played the 2nd "toughest" schedule of the year, but if you remove the 16 free wins they gave up themselves, they fall down a few spots on the ranks).

Playoff teams are bolded.

I don't think the packers were unlucky at all. They ended 6-10 and that is what they deserved. If you have a coach who makes the same mistake every week, a defense that gives up a TD every time the offense gives them the lead, have a kicker who can't make a clutch kick, and a Quarterback who can't drive the team down the field when it matters most, 6-10 is about as good as you could ask for.

Post by: Ngamer on January 02, 2009, 10:39:00 pm
After careful consideration, I'm going to have to go extremely bold and predict wins for all 4 road teams. I'd feel totally awesome for doing this if only they weren't all favorites!

5. Colts (12-4) over 4. Chargers (8-8)
* Colts are good on the road, good at pulling out close games, and I try never to bet against strong, experienced QBs or teams on a big winning streak. I think it'd be very fair to call the Colts the overall favorites if they can survive this game... yet all that being said, I could still very easily see the Chargers edging them out.

6. Ravens (11-5) over 3. Dolphins (11-5)
* Chad Pennington is without a doubt the best story of the '08 season, but even in this parity era of the NFL, how can you honestly pick a team that was 1-15 a season ago to make a deep playoff run? Just seems like the Fins will be in "happy to be here" mode while the Ravens will be more hungry, and so I'm thinking the result will be much like the regular season meeting where Baltimore owned them. This is the only result this weekend that I have even the least bit of confidence in.

5. Falcons (11-5) over 4. Cardinals (9-7)
* Originally I was going to take the Cards here because, like the Dolphins, the Falcons have had an amazing turnaround year and honestly should just be happy to have cracked the playoffs, especially with a rookie QB and coach. Also I was counting on Arizona fans being fired up and loud for their first-ever home playoff game... but then I heard that even at only $60, the Cards were barely able to sell all the tickets to this game. Pathetic! Seems even the hometown fans have a deep mistrust of this Cardinals team- with that in mind I'll back the team with the decent D and good running game.

6. Eagles (9-6-1) over 3. Vikings (10-6)
* I'd feel 200% better about this pick if not for two things: how the Eagles came out of the gate flat and played like class A chumps with their season on the line against the Redskins, and how AP singlehandedly won that Week 9 game in MN through sheer determination on the last two drives. I have an extreme lack of respect for Minnesota's coaching, QB play, and passing attack, but AP and their (loud) home field advantage should be okay equalizers, plus I can't see the Eagles picking up 3rd and short on the ground against that Vikings front four. All that being said... I still think they find a way to lose this.

(11:36:30 PM) octoinky has entered the room.
Im Ngamer (11:36:33 PM): let's get an opposing viewpoint
Im Ngamer (11:36:34 PM): morning octo
octoinky (11:36:37 PM): morning
Im Ngamer (11:37:09 PM): Neo, all three were legit calls
CarathornPD (11:37:12 PM): CieloAzor (5:37:32 AM): I think he'll come in saying the end was bullshit though
CarathornPD (11:37:20 PM): DKK5 (5:36:59 AM): Neo's going to come in here soon with that crying smiley
octoinky (11:37:23 PM): that the colts got lucky to even make it to overtime, thats what I think
CarathornPD (11:37:27 PM): Im Ngamer (5:38:30 AM): eh, yeah, I'm sure Neo will complain about the last series
Neo26988 (11:37:28 PM): XFD
Neo26988 (11:37:35 PM): Chargers shouldn't haven't even been in it at the end
Neo26988 (11:37:41 PM): The fact that they made OT is the luckiest fucking thing ever
octoinky (11:37:42 PM): two redzone turnovers and the manning 80 yard quicksnap play? all chargers fault, arguably, but still breaks
octoinky (11:38:04 PM): complete shut down D by the chargers, and some INCREDIBLE kicking
octoinky (11:38:06 PM): plus
octoinky (11:38:10 PM): indy should have given up the safety imo
octoinky (11:38:17 PM): you're going to punt from the 2 yard line to sproles?
octoinky (11:38:24 PM): he practically returned it to FG range, on a good punt
Thiradell (11:38:40 PM): Safety makes it 17-16.
Thiradell (11:38:42 PM): FG wins it there for SD.
Thiradell (11:38:45 PM): Risk is too great.
octoinky (11:38:48 PM): right, but chargers would need to go a looong ways
Thiradell (11:38:51 PM): Better to give them good field position to send it into OT.
GoldenJimbo007 (11:39:00 PM): nah I side with octo
Thiradell (11:39:01 PM): You can still return a safety punt!
Im Ngamer (11:39:05 PM): but Chargers could easily have scored the touch as well
Thiradell (11:39:08 PM): They would've had to go 35 yards max.
Im Ngamer (11:39:34 PM): I don't know, I think a safety could have been okay there
octoinky (11:39:38 PM): and the overtime calls were nice breaks for the chargers, yes
octoinky (11:39:42 PM): from what I could tell, legit though
Neo26988 (11:40:01 PM): They were ridiculous, but I guess not incorrect
Neo26988 (11:40:04 PM): Should never have even come to that though
octoinky (11:41:00 PM): colts couldn't do anything but get a few deep turnovers to stop the chargers from making it a blowout
Neo26988 (11:41:03 PM): Not even close
GoldenJimbo007 (11:41:21 PM): That Sproles fumble for a touchback was sooooo lucky for Indy
octoinky (11:41:26 PM): well
octoinky (11:41:30 PM): I don't like to call turnovers lucky
octoinky (11:41:33 PM): they forced it and recovered it
Im Ngamer (11:41:47 PM): I have to agree with octo here- that game was one quick snap and one huge fumble at the 1 yard line from being an easy Chargers victory
octoinky (11:41:49 PM): but the fact it was at the 2, not midfield or something, makes it look worse for the bolts
Thiradell (11:41:49 PM): Turnovers are rarely luck-based.
octoinky (11:42:16 PM): and the endzone pick was a bad throw really
Im Ngamer (11:42:17 PM): the Colts played well, true, but overall they had been outplayed leading up to the overtime
Neo26988 (11:42:23 PM): Not for a second Jon
Thiradell (11:42:24 PM): It was definitely unfortunate that it happened on that play.
Thiradell (11:42:30 PM): But gives Indy worse field position that way anyway.
octoinky (11:42:43 PM): not for a second? I saw the chargers driving moderately well every time, and completely shutting the colts down on offense
octoinky (11:42:59 PM): they fell asleep on one play, sure, but other than that I didn't see the colts do anything. first half I didn't see
GoldenJimbo007 (11:43:00 PM): barring the quick snap
Neo26988 (11:43:00 PM): No idea what game you were watching then
octoinky (11:43:08 PM): it was like 3 and out after 3 and out
Thiradell (11:43:17 PM): Colts took good care of the ball.
Thiradell (11:43:26 PM): Other than that, I dunno on how they outplayed SD.
Thiradell (11:43:29 PM): Didn't seem that way to me at all.
GoldenJimbo007 (11:43:45 PM): Rivers was 0:2
GoldenJimbo007 (11:43:47 PM): manning was 1:0
GoldenJimbo007 (11:43:49 PM): 300 yards
Thiradell (11:44:08 PM): Chargers also had more rushing yards (I think).
Im Ngamer (11:44:11 PM): you have to admit the Colts were easily outplayed on special teams at least
Im Ngamer (11:44:17 PM): look at those starting field positions
octoinky (11:44:20 PM): chargers had way more rushing yards
octoinky (11:44:23 PM): colts basically couldn't rush
octoinky (11:44:33 PM): and the awful chargers pass D was able to get pressure so the colts couldn't do anything
Neo26988 (11:44:34 PM): Punter had a lucky as hell day, I'll give him that
GoldenJimbo007 (11:44:34 PM): Best punting game I've ever seen in the NFL
GoldenJimbo007 (11:44:50 PM): Well one day anyway
Im Ngamer (11:44:54 PM): I think it was close between the two teams in all the other areas, but ST swung it to Charger's favor
Thiradell (11:45:05 PM): KR for Colts was awful.
Thiradell (11:45:10 PM): One of the worst I've ever seen.
Im Ngamer (11:45:37 PM): oh yeah, I forgot about the almost-fumble on that kick return for the Colts
Neo26988 (11:47:32 PM): Well I'm done with football for the year, too much bullshit for one year

Steelers over Chargers- with that performance from Darren Sproles, I'm really tempted to say San Diego, I don't see how you can't call them Super Bowl favorites if they pull it out in Pittsburgh. However, with the way Dick Lebeau has handled this Steeler defense, I don't see how it will happen. Pittsburgh advances

Tennessee over Baltimore- Should be an interesting matchup- Ravens D vs the rookie Chris Johnson. I'll go with Tennessee since I don't know if Flacco can win 2 straight games on the road.

Arizona over Carolina- Remember, Carolina could easily have played this week, but they had a bye this week they earned the last game of the season. Arizona really impressed me, and I think Kurt Warner has it in him for what could be his last legitimate Super Bowl run.

New York over Philadelphia- As good as Philadelphia is, I don't see them walking out of New York with a victory. I like the combination of Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs to run over this Eagle team, and advance to their 2nd straight NFC title game.

No, but we are 12 quarters away from the second best year of sports in Philadelphia... so far! You'll have to wait until early June when Mike Richards will be kissing the Stanley Cup to proclaim 2008-9 as the #1 Philly sports year of all time. Check out 1980, where not only did the Phillies win the World Series, but the Eagles, Sixers, and Flyers each made their respective sport's championship game or series. Granted, each of these three teams lost in the end, but still... 4 for 4 in getting teams in the finals (with one win) is an amazing feat, not quite topped (but perhaps equaled) by two teams winning it all.

But yeah, that's all besides the point in terms of what you meant. Of course we're going to romp to a title this year. The one Giant who constantly kills us, who we never have any answers for, Plaxico, will not be playing. This was very clearly the difference in our week 14 win @ the Meadowlands. Eli Manning looked like the grade A chump he is without his 6 foot 30 inch savior reeling in horrible throw after horrible throw.

Then, we're going to go down to Carolina and get nothing but the sweetest revenge for the 2003 NFC Championship game.

Finally, I'm not afraid of anyone in the AFC (we've already out-defensed Pittsburgh this season). The only thing I am afraid of, is our potential to play really, really bad seemingly at random for an entire four quarters (see @ Washington in week 16). Any of that type of heartbreaking performance will be certainly lethal for our hopes this time of year.

So yeah, the picks are:
Steelers
Titans
Panthers
Eagles

I may or may not change my mind about the Steelers/Chargers game, eventually.

Steelers
I gave up on my Chargers early this year, and to avoid being a fair weather fan haven't watched much of them since, and am still paying more attention to hockey and basketball. But I must say, their win over Indy was very impressive. I wasn't sure who I was rooting for, MIA or BAL to determine who the Bolts will play - still not sure, but I think cold + crazy pitt defense is enough to stop the chargers. While not much on the steelers offense makes me think they can run away with this, I just think the chargers will really be shut down. They know exactly what the bolts are bringing.

Titans
Miami was a good story, that win was nice, but come on, who isn't going to win that big with that many interceptions. Will they get that many again? Not a likely story. I like a close game here, but I think the Titans win this at home. Somebody already said it - Flacco 2 road wins in the playoffs? Nope

Panthers
Another possibly close game, but isn't a key Cardinal WR injured? I didn't think they had it in them the first game, and I don't think they have it in them this game. Panthers disappoint, but still win

Giants
Philly has some talent, but their miracle playoff birth and joke of a first round opponent comes to a dead stop here. Giants come out way too determined to let this one go. I think Philly will hardly show up, just a hunch!

Hmm, thats boring, all the road teams the first week and all the home teams the second week. Thats some major lack of confidence for the 3-4 seeds. Just how I see it shaking out though! If I had to call an upset, I'd probably say its zona > panthers. Then ravens > tits.

I think a lot can happen by the superbowl, and calling a favorite is pretty rough now. I can't really see Zona, Ravens, Eagles winning it. Chargers showed potential, but arguably will have the hardest path to get there, even including their first week's game, just projecting winners all the way to the SB. Makes it real hard to think they can pull it off. Giants could get a gift if Zona pulls an upset, but I think any potential AFC championship game is pretty good.

Chargers - SD are unlikely to be able to use Sproles so effectively this week, but thats ok because Rivers is good enough to win them the game.

Ravens - I havent managed to get excited about the Titans all year and I don't really have much reason to start now given the form that the Ravens are in.

Panthers - This might end up being a much closer game than I have in mind, but I like the Panthers a lot here.

Eagles - There is little that the Giants offer that Philly arent equipped to deal with. I guess just about any outcome is possible in this game though given the variance in play of the Eagles.

Steelers, duh
Titans
Panthers, duh
Eagles, I guess

I just bet $1600 to win $100 that the Chargers won't win the Superbowl, and also $1000 to win $100 against the Eagles. Since I already had $100 on the Eagles to win the Superbowl at 11-1, I'm now basically freerolling on the Eagles, where I'll either win $100 when they win, or else lose nothing. I don't know if I could have stomached the bet otherwise, but just by punching a few numbers into a calculator, it clearly has value.

Post by: Ngamer on January 10, 2009, 03:17:00 am
I'm going to go with...

2. Steelers (12-4) over 4. Chargers (8-8)
* Chargers were by far my favorite team to make the playoffs, but as cool as it would be to see a 4-8 team win out to the AFC Championship I've just got to pick against them again. I mean, they've been playing great D and I've got serious questions about the Steelers' offense as a whole and Big Ben's health in particular. ...but, to travel across the country into cold weather with LT still limping around? The Bolts would surely need another lights-out game from Sproles to pull this one out, and the chances of that happening on the road against the league's best defense just doesn't seem too likely. So, give me the Steelers in a close.

6. Ravens (11-5) over 1. Titans (13-3)
* I've had a lack of respect for the Titans all season long- time for it to finally pay off! I don't think playing on the road bothers the Ravens much, and this seems like one of those cases where a short week vs a long layoff could actually be an advantage. The Ravens looked great and are clearly on a roll whereas the Titans called it quits at the end of the regular season, which always seems to come back and bite team. I envision Lewis and those linebackers crowding the box to shut down Tenn's running game early, forcing Collins to win it with his arm. And Kerry Collins' arm vs Ed Reed's hands? What's not to like about that matchup! Ravens to play it tight before busting out in the 4th quarter for an easy victory.

2. Panthers (12-4) over 4. Cardinals (9-7)
* I can't believe the Cards even GOT here. Sorry, but they didn't impress me against the Falcons despite the win, they certainly didn't impress me on the road at any point during the regular season, and to now have them travel all the way across the country to play a well-rested D with a strong running game... Yeah, just not seeing any way the Cardinals keep this close. Panthers in the easiest victory of the weekend.

1. Giants (12-4) over 6. Eagles (9-6-1)
* Again, I love the miracle run this team is on, but I think it ends here. Sure they topped the Giants a few weeks back, but New York messed up with the whole Plax fiasco and wasn't playing for much there while the Eagles had their season on the line. And speaking of seasons on the line, even when that's been the case Philly has had a ton of trouble moving the ball against the Redskins and Vikings. I like their defense, but can't see them putting up enough points on the road against that strong Giants D to pull this out. I'll take NY to edge them in another tight contest.

Picks from others

SpiderWaffle (1:42:54 AM): all home teams

dragondragon18 (10:59:52 AM): steel, tits, pants, giants

BossOnGLB: Steelers
Ravens
Panthers
Giants

Rofl, worst NFC championship ever? At least seeing parity is good in the NFL.

Chargers really didn't show up - impressive first drive then... gone! Special teams won the first playoff game, and arguably lost their second.

I'll pick Eagles and Ravens.

Either game could go either way which is fun. Gonna be weird if the NFC wins the superbowl - neither team is your traditional superbowl champion-type, as in a few weeks ago you'd laugh at the prospect of them winning 4 playoff games. I guess that's all that matters once you get into the playoffs, though. Pats showed us last season the regular season is just to get your seed, still need to show up.

A part of that is that NOBODY going into the playoffs except maybe the Giants were very impressive and a popular pick to actually go all the way. I'd rather have that - a lot of teams to fight it out - than a prohibitive favorite like the Pats were last year or the AFC top 3 was in general the last few years in a row. Nothing ever seems to shake out that way, though.

My predictions.

Steelers over Ravens- A matchup of great defenses here. The Ravens had the #2 defense in the league this year. However, the Steelers were #1. The Steelers were #1 in total defense, pass defense, and #2 in rush defense. Flacco has certainly overachieved this postseason, and he's been a great story. However, seeing as what kind of a defense he has to go against on the road, give me Pittsburgh to advance to the Super Bowl for the 2nd time in 4 years.

Cardinals over Eagles- can you believe it? Can you seriously believe it? The Cardinals aren't just participating in the NFC title game, they're hosting it! Here is a team that has been the laughing stock of the league for years. They haven't made the playoffs since 1998, and they haven't won 10 games since 1976. Yet here they are. I really am happy for Donovan Mcnabb and all, but I gotta root for the Cardinals.  Here is a team that has overcome a few obstacles in the playoffs. They first defeated Matt Ryan, who set the completion record in a postseason game by a rookie, and they intercepted Jake Delhomme 5 times, who has performed well in the past. I like the edge Arizona has in receivers. I expect Fitzgerald to outperform Deshean Jackson, and take it for Arizona.

stuck with eagles and ravens here too. I still don't trust those steelers. I wanted to take the eagles against NYG for bet purposes but everyone but strahan was picking them on FOX and fading them is one of the biggest +EV things I've ever seen in sports betting.

AFC title game in Pittsburgh is always mega lol (even the 93ish one indy almost won it on a hail mary at the end)

Worst NFC title game ever and the ratings will probably show it. Personally I'm rooting for the Buzzsaw. I want a team to win the SB who lost a game by 40 earlier in the season.

If the eagles win the SB game is a rematch Eagles beat the Steelers and got anally raped* by the Ravens. The Eagles win that game and the bengals get a moral victory this season.

*unconfirmed report

A-ha, well, to my credit, that was a higher percentage than most other people were giving them at that point.

Plus on that day, I was very, very, very, very, very, very frustrated.

I can at least look back and say that I was never in the idiotic group of Eagles fans that were in such a hurry to usher in the Kevin Kolb era in Philly, and supported my man the whole way.

On the other hand, I was part of the idiotic group of Eagles fans that was through with Reid. I'm a complete 180 on that stance right now. It's not just because of our current position, either. It's because he's back to being a stable (hell, great) coach who hasn't made a god-awful challenge or taken a dumb timeout pretty much SINCE the Baltimore game. He's back to being the guy who's been to so many NFC Championships in the past (and present).

He seemed to be in panic mode back then, making horrible decisions almost every game. For the first time, it seemed like he was caving into the media (who are with few exceptions a bunch of incredible morons) outcry over his unique play calling and some of his (admittedly bad) personnel decisions. This was not what made him great for all those years and I felt it was time for a change.

His players absolutely love playing for him, so now that he's back on track game-management-wise, I'm all for him staying indefinitely. If you see shots of the 4th and 2 stop from yesterday's game, check out some of the offensive players (and Chris Clemons-- who would only be in for passing downs) getting pumped on the sidelines after the stop... you can see them at the bottom of the screen going wild. To me, that is the definition of a fired up team, which is a hallmark of a well coached team, player-wise.

AFAIC, Reid and McNabb should be here until they want to retire-- with the possible exception of McNabb eventually trying to "Brett Favre" us-- and you'll never hear different from me otherwise.

Eagles, I never like to say the scores I pick because they're usually dreadfully wrong, but last week I had, in secret, 24-10 eagles which was dangerously close. But this week, I'm going with 31-20 (with Rackers inevitably missing a long field goal at some point).

Steelers.... I guess. If my boy Flacco (I've been in the same house as him, which qualifies us as boys!) had one more year of experience, I'd give it to Balt. 19-13

Hey, one of you 2 insane Philly homers, care to take a $100 wager on them? I'll happily take Arizona +4 (line right now) for $100! I know QB will bite but I want Youse taking a stab at this too!

I am not an insane Philly homer!

(I'm far, far worse than that!)

Also, wheat, I don't get the point of your post. Not that you had a point, but if you did, is it that you think the games will be bad? Or you just don't like any team left? I'm baffled as to why a major sports fan such as yourself would not watch two potentially epic championship games, one looking to be a nonstop shootout, the other looking to be the most physical chess match ever played.

Anyway, I'm mulling it over, Jim... I'll think about it more tomorrow, but that +4 is scary. Last I heard (Monday or so from some chump radio host) it was +3. I don't typically bet on the Eagles due to the double-negative potential. (Of course, I placed 50 on their ML last week, which I don't mind so much in hindsight!)

Personally, I've got to go with

Eagles over Cardinals
* Ehh, the Cards played pretty well last week, but mostly that game seemed like a complete implosion by the Panthers. I DO like their home field advantage, and its hard to argue against the Eagles' record in NFC Championship games. BUT... nay, just can't pull the trigger on the upset.

Steelers over Ravens
* The Ravens are a team built for playoff success, but the Steelers are a step up from the Titans defensively- I see them picking off Joe Cool on at least a couple deep balls late in the game to seal the deal.

Expecting both of these games to be pretty close and competitive late in the the 4th quarter, which has me frightened of making spread bets in either direction!

Current Superbowl odds (Pinnacle):

Pittsburgh Steelers +526
Baltimore Ravens +1345
Philadelphia Eagles +1462
Atlanta Falcons +2806
Arizona Cardinals +4000

With one more win, would this make the Cardinals the most unlikely Superbowl Champ in the history of sports betting?

40-1 was available on the Giants last year and because of their tougher road to the championship, they were definitely more unlikely.

Unsurprisingly, betting the Cards moneyline in every game and rolling over the winnings to the next week would have gotten you 105-1, even though they were lucky enough to have a home game in the NFC championship rather than playing @ NYG. Taking 40-1 would have been a rookie mistake!

I seriously cannot say I'd be surprised if Arizona pulls this off. At this time last year it was New England this, New England that. Nobody gave the Giants a chance. The Cardinals are getting the same treatment on a smaller scale, and I hope they silence their critics.

Post by: Quiet Bol on February 01, 2009, 04:08:00 pm
Noted, Jon.

My ridic bets:

Cardinals to get the first 1st down - $435 to win $300

Cardinals to punt first - $340 to win $200

Cardinals offense to cross the 50 yard line first - $105 to win $100

John Madden will say Kurt Warner's full name before Ben Roethlisberger's - $90 to win $50

Brenda Warner to be shown on TV under 3 times - $80 to win $50

Budweiser to have more commercials than Bud Light - $200 to win $50

Madden and Michaels will say "Big Ben" under 6.5 times - $125 to win $50

No NFL players to be arrested during Super Bowl week - $62.50 to win $50

Al Michaels to allude to the point spread before the total - $175 to win $50

Larry Fitzgerald to be tackled by the hair before Troy Polamalu - $275 to win $50

Obama will NOT call the winning team before the broadcast goes off the air - $100 to win $50

Pittsburgh wins and the stock market goes up on Monday - $50 to win $72.50

Pittsburgh wins and the stock market goes down on Monday - $50 to win $90

Matt Millen will NOT correctly pick the winner in the pre-game show - $50 to win $105

Bill Bidwell's tie to NOT be red - $50 to win $200

No Jay Leno appearance during the pre-game show - $50 to win $50

6 or more planes in the pre-game flyover - $50 to win $92.50

Zero blocked punts - $1000 to win $100

No scoring in the first 7:30 of the 1st quarter - $50 to win $75

Steelers to have the longest kickoff return - $75 to win $112.50

First play to be challenged will be upheld (not reversed) - $130 to win $100

First score of the game to be a TD - $150 to win $100

Gatorade to be dumped on the winning coach's head - $50 to win $500 on Lime Green and $50 to win $80 on Yellow (I'm pretty pissed about this whole situation. Lemon lime is more green than yellow imo...though maybe not when it's watered down. Could have gotten like 4-1 on Yellow and had no desire to bet "Lime Green" if lemon-lime doesn't count, but now I'll probably lose $100 somehow.)

I really haven't even looked at player props, or even most of the team props available. (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fembarassed.gif&hash=5641b47ebaa060c9559e379ec4d9f9bfb35dd661)

Well if the scoring system wasn't such garbage, I'd win the pickem league again but meh. I bet the spread on Arizona +6 against QB and won that for $100, won my work playoff fantasy league by a huge margin (bragging rights for a year!); and best of all, I don't look retarded for sticking with Arizona! All of QB's bets added up to be +$27.50 (not factoring in the Monday bets), but then he lost $100 to teh Jimbo to put himself in the minus category.

fucking steelers not covering the fucking spread

fuckers

winning bets
steelers to receive opening kickoff

everyone forgot the odds that Ari would've also deferred here

cardinals to NOT score every quarter
Warner to throw whatever the hell yards that was to break the all time SB record for career  YES +425
something I forgot what it was NO -160
Urban to beat Sweed in yards
a roth prop

losing bets
rushing play 1st down
Arizona Cardinals score last
Steelers NOT scoring every quarter  (man that last TD really fucked me didn't it?)
steelers to cover spread
an alternate line for steelers to cover
push
Fitz hair

I regret not firing on the gatorade thing as that was free $ in hindsight.

Results
+$50  would've been well over $100 had the steelers either
A) covered the spread   or
B)  not scored at the end

edit--missed one we need the market to go
