Subject: Will no longer use elite boards or aim, tell other eliters about it please (copy this message on elite boards)
Last night I got nailed with malware/trojans etc from one or both places (the-elite.net boards and aim). I'm through with ever using the elite boards and aim again. No offense to any of the other eliters that will continue to use the boards/aim, but I will not risk fucking up this computer further to enjoy that stuff any longer. I'm not sure how I will get messages across about new WRs and stuff or possible meets, but I suppose I could use e-mail or some other medium. I will miss talking to you guys. I may set up a yahoo messenger account or something more trustworthy in the near future so I can be informed on WRs and other happenings, but for now I'm staying away from instant messengers. What the Devil?
Here's what you should do to not end up like Boss:
1. Always use FireFox to get around online. http://www.mozilla.com/en.../firefox/?from=getfirefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?from=getfirefox)
2. After you install FF, click these links to install two very useful extensions: AdBlock https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)
3. And NoScript. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722)
This way you'll never have to see an ad you don't want to, and it makes surfing sites a ton faster; especially the boards!
AIM itself is a safe program. The only problem it has is that the latest versions are loaded with all kinds of junk you don't need. For best results just use a classic version, for instance 5.2. That can be found at

If you feel that you need extra security, start up AIM and go to My Aim - Edit Options - Edit Preferences and move to the File Transfer tab. Change the security setting here to "Reject from All Users"- this will make sure no one can send you a potentially harmful file.
What should I do if I think I may have been infected?
Run scans with the following programs to get your computer back to clean and save status.

If you feel you need even more protection, AVG is a good free option for real time protection from both spyware and viruses.

2. I've had the same kind of spam as well, but its not from Aim, its from Yuku.
3. Jon I installed those add-ons, but the No script thingy fucks up the total layout of the boards so I disabled that one quickly :P
4. Boss is probably using his parents computer and got spammed and now his parents forbid him to use the computer (for these purposes)

Cara is probably right with the 4th one. I think I got malware'd quite a bunch still using IE, but Firefox indeed is much better, never had this spam shit people talking about, but the boards are pretty slow (slower than it used to be?) so that's still kinda annoying.

True Cara, NoScript makes the boards look weird- what you can do then is to click the bottom bar and say "Allow yuku". That way all the main scripts for how the page looks will work, but all the background ads and popups junk won't be allowed to run.

I had everything which Jon mentioned would be needed apart from NoScript, it does make the boards look a bit weird at the minute but i am sure i will get used to it.

You don't even need an old version of AIM - just look up "AIM ad hack" and there is a site that has the newest version of AIM completely ad-free (and without all the stupid bells and whistles like WeatherBug). I've been using it for over a year and love it.

instead of aim i use trillian basic. never had any problems with it... 3 years ago i had problems with aol so since then i moved to trillian... though im hardly ever on it since i love windows live messenger and ventrilo

umm.. the actual reason for using an older aim is not to get rid of ad shit. the newer aims for some reason stopped having getfile features, or multiple transactions are not possible or gay stuff like that. (tho probably the same for older versions). I'll still stick to 5.5 anytime.
