Title: Your top 10 most influential games in your life
Post by: Jimbo on January 12, 2009, 07:10:00 pm
Topic is pretty self-explanatory! What you're about to read from me is a direct copy/paste from Facebook, so don't mind the retard speak! (explaining what certain games were).

10. WORMS WORLD PARTY (PC). My freshman year of high school, Andrew Freitag brought over a demo of this game to my house from Dustin Ott. We played the hell out that demo and over the next few days I decided to (illegally) download the real version from KaZaA. When we got it, we could not stop playing it. I gave him an extra copy and we played the absolute piss out of that game for at least until the end of the calendar year 2002. I still have this game on both of my computers and play off and on when I'm bored.

9. GRAND THEFT AUTO III (PS2, June 2001). I first played this game at Devin Hedsand's house (a friend of Rex Coldagelli at the time). It was the first game of it's kind; a revolutionary free-roam style game with a storyline, side missions, and top-of-the-line video and audio at the time. The game still remains one of my favorites today, regardless of it's awful physics! Andrew and I both had this for our PCs at first and played the crap out of it as well. I'll always remember making my own radio station of all Rammstein songs; so every time I hear certain Rammstein songs, I automatically think of the first days of GTA 3.

8. GRAND THEFT AUTO SAN ANDREAS (PS2, October 2004). I still remember the first day GTA SA came out, it was a Tuesday, and I was with Austin Feirtag after school when we picked it up from Best Buy. We played HOURS at his house marveling at how ridiculous the graphics and physics were (good thing). It was a game I fell deerly in love with, and remains my most played NON Nintendo game to date. (well over 1000 hours and beaten 8 times). An honorable mention goes to GTA Vice City, which game out January 2003; it's a great game but not as influential as it could have been.

7. MARIO KART 64 (Nintendo 64, Nov 1996). This is a no brainer, and this is where the list begins of games I grew up with and played non freaking stop for a long time. MK64 is a basic, short game; with 4 sets of 4 races a piece and 4 separate difficulties. What gives this game so much replay-ability is it's vs mode and it's battle mode and it's time trial mode. My dad and I played vs mode against each almost every night for many years, establishing him as a fairly good Karter and it excelled me as a Karter as worldly good. Nowdays, big competitions are held in Virginia and MK64 is one of the games highly played; in 2008 I finished THIRD in the final tournament ahead of many high profile Kart players with much better time trial record than I have.

6. PAPER MARIO 64 (Nintendo 64, Feb 2001). There is something about the incredibly long storyline, the great puzzles, the awesome twists, and the fact that Mario (and everyone else) is in 2D while in the midst of a 3D world. It's a very unique idea that Nintendo turned into an absolute smash hit. When I first picked up my copy, I had a very difficult time solving the chapters; it's really a test of memory. As the hours and days went along however, I found myself breezing through the rest of the game and at the end I felt very satisfied with the game as a whole. There isn't just a storyline here, there's many side missions, and lots of hours needed to complete the game 100%. As of now I've beaten this game easily 10+ times, the latest time in as little as 12 hours play (the first time needed 40+)

5. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (Sega Genesis, 1992). Dear God why did my dad have to let me have both a Genesis and a SNES at such a young age. It's a very basic, 1 dimensional game; yet I found myself in awe as to how fun it always was. For many years, I could never beat the final robotnik; that is until I turned 12 years old and I FINALLY found the right strategy to do it (took THAT long to figure out I could jump higher than his arms). With so much nostalgia attached to Sonic, this game easily ranks top 5 because had it came out in say... 1999, I would never have strived to beat that damn robotnik! It's also incredibly fun to get Super Sonic as early as possible and dominate the game that way.

4. SUPER MARIO ALL STARS (Super Nintendo, Dec 1994). OK this might be cheating, SM All Stars is actually 5 games in one but it's the only way I could put SMB 3 and Super Mario World on this list. Nintendo did the most unbelievable thing at the time by putting 3 NES games, an unreleased game (lost levels) and Super Mario World into one supreme package. Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 by itself are AMAZING games, but this time they had upgraded graphics and audio! How can you go wrong? I still play this game nearly daily before bed, it's great! There is nothing else to say, most of you should know this SNES cart very well.

3. PAPER MARIO THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR (GameCube, August 2004). As if I needed another reason to waste another billion hours on a Paper Mario game! I personally think PMTTYD is THE greatest game ever made, but I can't put it above the top 2 for obvious reasons as you'll see. It's everything the first Paper Mario had but with insanely better graphics, better moves, better battle system, better everything. It's a very enjoyable game that I think everyone should play and beat at least once before they die. One file of mine is a level 31 and has over 50 hours invested into making it a 100% file. In total I've beaten TTYD probably 10+ times; and the pit of 100 trials once.

2. PERFECT DARK (Nintendo 64, May 2000). Perfect Dark is an exact, updated replica of Goldeneye obviously. The guards are smarter, the weapons are better, the storyline is cooler, the physics are neater, the levels are prettier, the levels are bigger and badder, and best of all.... the multiplayer is 40x better! I can play simulants ranging from ridic easy to ridic hard anytime I feel like it. I tried speedrunning PD for a while but I just suck at it. Needless to say, I have about 50 combined days stuck into PD since it's creation. (each day being 24 hours). AND NOW, you're number 1 is....

1. GOLDENEYE 007 (Nintendo 64, August 1997). There are very specific reasons Perfect Dark and Goldeneye grace this list as #1 and #2 respectively, and that's the elite. Without these games, who knows how I'd be in real life. I've sunk RETARDED amounts of hours into both combined. I've risen to fame, won national tournaments, made and lost friends both at the expense of Goldeneye. You ask any of my closer friends as to what game I have played the most, and it's Goldeneye. My parents know all of the tracks, my friends know all of the levels, my teachers knew what I would do at night instead of doing homework. There is almost nothing in Goldeneye I have not done in some way. If you took Goldeneye alone out of my life, I would so drastically different it wouldn't be funny; I'd probably be in college! The single most important thing that Goldeneye has brought to me are friends, fellow eliters that all gathered in Virginia, eliters I have known since December 2001. It's been a joy. Rising to 3rd in the whole world though and staying there for a year was a great joy too =D

When i have time later ill list my top 10... but why did you make your own radio station on gta III that takes away from the game! listening to those no name songs (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Post by: Time was untied when set. on January 12, 2009, 07:58:00 pm
Well, Here are my top 10 games:

10. Doom (SNES port) - I just loved the music and even though the graphics were very pixelated, they were impressive for the time. The computer version is good too, but Ive never really played computer games.

9. Mario Bros 3 - Classic. I just remember struggling to ever beat it, and I dont know if I ever did till at least 2001 or so.

8. Metroid - Another classic game that could have been ranked higher, the music is amazing for NES and captures the theme perfectly for every level, and going around Zebes looking for new upgrades is just such a great idea. Bosses are pretty easy, but for an NES game that is ok. Ive never speedran this game, probably wont. I just remember those days where Id play hours trying to find where to go next...its so illogical and random that it makes it all that much better.

7. Zelda - Similar story with Metroid, never really gets old to play this game every few years just to beat it again.

6. Final Fantasy 7 - Some say this is overrated, but I dont really see it. This is an amazing game that, while lacking replay value in the long run, will always be one of my most memorable experiences.

5. Final Fantasy 8 - I just think the characters, music and storyline are what make this game a beautiful experience. Squall was badcore, and even though the Junction system has its flaws in terms of making the game ridiculously easy, this game never disappointed me once I got into it. Definitely one of the most epic storylines ever seen in a video game.

4. Final Fantasy 6- NOSTALGIA! This was one of my very first RPGs, although I dont really have any motivation to play it any more, its still a great game that is the highlight of the FF series. Every character has different skills that only they can do, and the Esper system makes for tons of possiblities.

3. Super Mario RPG- This game is jsut brilliant. I know it is a bit on the kiddie side and the challenge is almost non existant to experienced players, but the entertainment of this game is just unmatched. There are cameo appearances from classic Nintendo characters, hilarious lines from various movies, the music is jsut absurdly good, Squaresoft and Rare combine to make one hell of a masterpiece.

2. Goldeneye - Okay, so ive put the most hours into this game, but thats for speedrunning. This game is brilliant regardless, though. I just remember the first times I played it i marvelled at how realistic it was. But of course speedrunning is why this is ranked so high..without that I probably would barely even have it on the top 10.

1. Super Metroid - This game is the best it can ever get. Every single area sets such an exquisite atmosphere that I have yet to ever see in another video game, much less the pathetic Prime installments with halfass music that ruined the Metroid experience for me. Super Metroid has the best soundtrack PERIOD. Sure listening to them on their own without the game may not be the greatest, but when you play the levels and hear the music, its just such an amazing combination. I tried speedrunning it a little, but for me this game is purely an experience.

10. Super Mario 64 - A game that blew everyone away. It was so amazing to play in 3D, and the world felt so incredibly real (despite it being pretty barren, looking back on it now). Even though I was about 15 when I first played it, I felt like a kid again.

9. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - The first game I played through to absolute 100% completion, as far as I can remember (there were a few around that time), that required more than just completing all the levels. Finding all the flowers and red coins without a guide was very rewarding as a 12 year old. I still remember seeing world 4's secret level "The Impossible? Maze" and being terrified at the mere thought!

8. Donkey Kong Country - The first console videogame I ever owned (no, I didn't own a NES, and no, I didn't get a SNES when it first came out). I did own a Game Boy and I played many NES and SNES games at friends' houses, but this was a special game for me. Doing that gauntlet of levels at the start of the snow world (without being able to save) was memorable.

7. Final Fantasy 7 - I didn't get into the FF franchise until this game, and it was pretty remarkable, especially since those days were the beginning of the Sony/Nintendo rivalry. I went over to a friend's house, we rented Mario Kart 64, and he showed me FF7 on his shiny new PSX. I had no idea what I was watching (I even remember being slightly disinterested at the time), but I have good memories of those days! And, of course, I later played FF7 multiple times through to completion, and most of the following FF games as well (all except FFX and X-2).

6. GoldenEye - The game that needs no introduction, it was my pseudo-start to speedrunning... not even on a competitive level, but rather trying to do a level faster than you thought was humanly possible. Back in the infancy of the internet, I remember reading an article in Nintendo Power which outlined how to get the Invincibility cheat, and there was a video online (!!) that you could download and watch one of "Nintendo's top testers" get 1:25. I went to my grandparents' house, spent 4 or 5 hours downloading the 5 megabyte file, and I couldn't believe it was actually possible. Getting 1:53 after eight hours of torturous gaming is still one of the most rewarding experiences I can remember.

5. Beatmania IIDX - I would like to rate this higher, but I'm not sure I can justify it over the top 4. Easily the hardest videogame ever made, I've spent two years playing (one year at a pretty hard pace), and I'm still nowhere near the highest echelon of play; I might be slightly over the halfway point. No other game is like that. I own all 13 Japanese discs (from 3rd Style up to 15 DJ Troopers), and it has some of the best videogame music ever made. If I got into this before DDR, it would be rated higher. As it stands, I got into it quite late, but it's some of the most fun I've had with a game, and definitely the most challenging game I will ever play. The presentation, music, fun-factor, and challenge is unmatched in any music game (perhaps any videogame) to date.

4. Smash Brothers Melee - The game that really got me into competitive fighting games, I've played this for years at a high tournament level, and done a bit of traveling to play people in out of town tournaments, too. My brother and I would play this almost daily for five years, and I've met several of my current best friends through the game (well, we met at university, but the friendship was strengthened through rounds of Melee). The game was fast, fun, and always had moments of intense wackiness or insane skill. I also won my expensive DDR pads in a US tournament by playing Melee as the final game in a "multi-game" tournament; one of two moments where I've won a $500+ prize playing in a videogame tournament (the other being Rock Band, not listed). If you want to know who I play, the answer is "everyone"... characters I would feel most confident with in a tournament setting are Falcon (dark red color), Marth (white), Dr. Mario (dark red), and Jigglypuff (green).

3. Street Fighter III: Third Strike - My foray into competitive Street Fighter; after learning I was decent at Melee, I decided to pick up a real fighting game. I've spent thousands of hours in the arcade, at home, at other people's houses, or online watching tournament fights for this game, and I consider myself one of the better players in the city at it. I'm still amazed at the regularity and thoroughness that the Japanese beat North American players in this game, though; it's really something else. After the DDR machine kind of went broke at our university arcade, I would basically camp at the 3rd Strike machine for 3 or 4 years. I don't want to guess how much I've spent on this. And like Melee, I've made some of my longest-lasting and best friendships over rounds of Street Fighter. Unlike Melee, I am not confident with "any" character in this game, though I've been picking up more throughout the last two years or so. My best characters are Ken (HK white, SA3), Ryu (MP gray, SA3 and SA1), Necro (LP+MK+HP gold, SA3), and Dudley (LK white, SA3). To get good with a character in this game requires dozens of hours of study and practice, so while I can "play" everyone, I certainly can't do their advanced combos and tactics. The characters listed above I can play at a pretty high level, though I've spent the most time on Ken and Ryu.

2. Perfect Dark - I debated ranking this a bit lower, even, but it's hard to argue the impact PD has had on my life. Even though I retired in 2000, I still spend a lot of time in chat, and participating in Elite projects. I also ran a PD fansite for a good year before PD's release (my first experience with websites), and that was a lot of fun as well. I wasn't the best speedrunner, and I only achieved 6th as my highest ranking, but the longevity of its impact ranks this game as high as it did. Derek (SnapDragon) was one of my best friends while he was still in Calgary, and I wouldn't have met him outside this game.

1. Dance Dance Revolution - If you know me, you know this pretty well. I used to be a top 10 player in Canada before I dropped off due to lack of money and time, and the amount of hours spent playing this game (at home, in arcades, or on PC), studying stepcharts, watching videos, and listening to the music is measured in the thousands since 1999. Between this and 3rd Strike, I have easily spent over $5000 in the arcade. I've owned at least five soft DDR pads, and I won two Cobalt Flux metal DDR pads at a tournament ($300+ each), which got thorough use for years. It was the start of my exposure to music games, and since then I've become proficient in practically every music game I can find on any console; it's become my favorite videogame genre. I still am friends with a select few of my old DDR buddies back from 8 or 9 years ago, though most of those friendships dropped off. Whether you talk about playing with friends in dank arcades (and driving to get there on an afternoon), watching one of the world's best players get a AAA in front of your eyes, or playing on home pads with your friends doing goofy dances, this game easily has the most memories/nostalgia points for me. Between friends, gaming experiences, money spent, and influence in gaming preference, DDR is next to none in my gaming career. Oh, and I also spent a good chunk of time contributing to the arcade accuracy of the StepMania simulation files on DDRUK.com.

Honorable Mentions

- Mario Kart 64: A great game played at friend's houses (see FF7 above) and in my own basement for a long time. Was one of the first competitive games I enjoyed against my brother.

- Super Mario RPG: I believe this was my first exposure to RPGs in general. Excellent game, but I chose FF7 over it for the "RPG spot" on my list.

- Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Just for sheer magic of the experience the first time through. I don't think I was ever the same after playing through Kokiri Forest at a Toys 'R Us demo station (my first Zelda experience, since I got a SNES late and originally missed out on LttP), and then all the way through the Deku Tree dungeon at a videogame event at my church's youth group. I was in disbelief that a game could be this "real", this "involving". I wanted to put it on my list, but this game was more about giving me the warm fuzzies, rather than changing my gaming preferences. You can be sure this would be #11!

- Worms: No, not Worms 2, or Worms Armageddon. I'm talking about the original Worms, which I saw played on Windows 95 back when it was still new at a friend's place from Jr. High. I played this a LOT, but my fervor never really extended to the Worms sequels for some reason. I still prefer this art style + weapons arsenal to any Worms game!

Crap! I just realized I forgot about Zelda Link to the Past. Ah well. OoT was a  great game too, but I feel it is very overrated now , and despite investing 1 or 2 years into it back in the 90s, if I cant play it and still see it as a great game, I cant think too highly of it.

Well i'll try to keep the list simple just beacuse i do not feel like typing all that much (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ftongue.gif&hash=7cfc888ebd66cf455a55fd5e124ee8267da91148)

10. Starfox series (snes, 64) - Woke up Xmas morning to unwrap a N64 and i was thrilled... i rand down to the phone to call my friend telling him; iwas so excited just wondering what it was going to be like. Turned out I'd play it for hours non stop. Trying to take the hard route proved how good you are at games...really showing patients and skill. Plus you cant be the talking "do a barrel roll!"

9. Megaman X (snes) - Believe i was in 2nd grade coming home from school my mom picked it up for me. played this game non stop. figuring out all the bosses and getting all the weapon upgrades. Awesome shooting game with non stop fun.  and the hyruken! or however you spell it! but i'll never forget the code that i memorized for it...7431-3842-8523 everything unlocked with all upgrades!

8. World of Warcraft - Did you just sit at your computer for 12 hours straight? I sure did. Thanks WoW!

7.  Bomberman 64 - Talk about F*cking fun!!!!! Same as Star Fox 64, unwrapped it and went to town. Played this game for hours collecting all the gold cards, took so long but worth it. Game was so fun and strategic which some levels were a challege. Not to mention the multiplayer was addicting. instant classic in my books.

6. Mario RPG - Hands down one of the best RPGs ever! who would of thought they would of actually made a rpg off mario. Everything about this game to me is pretty perfect. Its a awesome RPG and yet its very easy to play and understand unlike some others that are a lot of talking and such. The characters were great and not to mention the "Mario RPG rap" kicks ass.

5. Perfect Dark - Challenge 30, co-op, shut out, GREG FUCKING WOLL. yeah aesome game and the multiplayer is by far one of the more superior ones they have out there or should i say for its time. just played so much multi with that game and i didnt even own it...greg did so yeah spent a lot of time with him (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fwink.gif&hash=4979046fbfc7ed25a03644bf608e503c4aa73f0f) kick'n ass and takin names. probably favorite part of the game is the co-op. teamwork and goodtimes!

4. Goldeneye - Thanks to this game i've meet many good friends, online and in real life...Eddie Lovins for example one of the best even though he set me up with a shitty girlfriend who turned out to be a whore...hey thanks eddie! but none the less awesome game for competition and broken controllers (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e) really fun to beat kids who think they are awesome at this game saying "they kill anyone" not knowing we are part of this site and then just get wrecked. take my hat of for goldeneye.

3. Legend of Zelda series (snes, 64, gcube, wii) - what cannot be said about these games and how amazing they are...the showed me everything in a hero and what it takes to kick some ass. Most fun i ever had playing OOT just trying to get everything. Got caught up in the story like where i'd want to do nothing but run home from school and just play it non stop. While playing majoras mask i hade a gf in 9th grade when it came out. I got the game and it was to good for anything else so i broke up with my gf for it...wise choice? fuck yah. This game goes down in my record books.

2. Super Smash Brothers series (64, gcube, wii) - probably moved up on my list this year after playing it very competitively during school. I've really learned this game and how to play (brawl) while i was good at the others i've accelerated in this one now. I have a tourney coming up hopefully i'll do good. I really could play this game with a equal competitor for hours apon hours...literally i can never get enough of this game. just all i do now and probably will for a while. This game opened my eyes to what i love to do. So much fun and i accept all challengers (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

1. Super Mario World - Well this is number one in my books...cuase honestly it started my video game obession. all the mornings waking up at 630-7am to play this game for 6hours straight every day. I loved every minute of it. actually playing with my brother it start because we would take turns just that started out the competition side of me trying to beat him. this game is by far my biggest influence not to mention I was most proud beating this game running at the end while collecting the coins where I believe it said "congratulations you are a super mario brother" i just filled with joy and really was so happy that i knew i loved video games (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e) So thanks to Mario this has all happened to me.

#3. Dice rolling
#2. Poker
#1. GE

Dice and Poker cost me to lose all the money I ever earned when I was 15 years old. Then GE cost me 4 years of my life and counting.

You can read my bio but I'll bite anyway.

  10. Poker, board games, and whatever else I've dipped into.

  9. Any mario series.  Games are too easy now.  Saying the game is hard because 'one' boss is hard doesn't count.  Overall they're not that   bad.

  8. Final Fantasy Tactics.  Slower and somewhat more difficult than other FF's.  Maxed this game too.  Needed a difficulty setting.

  7. SSBM.  An avid player of this game.  Requiring quick reflexes to master a few fast characters but overall this is probably easier than GE.

  6. Perfect Dark.  Not a fan of the future.  Loved the multiplayer but this game fell along the wayside recently.

  5. Final Fantasy V.  Didn't quite max the game but it feels more like a true FF with lack of technology and more dragons.

  4. Final Fantasy VI.  Maxed entire game.  Beat at low level and high levels.  Found nearly all it's items.  Don't like that this game is modernish.

  3. Goldeneye.  Do I need to explain this here?  Except I wouldn't have joined this community without it and gain a bad reputation that's better than   none.

  2. Magic The Gathering.  Invested much money into this and have made a surplus in return.  I know what pulls to make in drafts to make and what decks to   build.  Don't lose that often except for manaflood.  Likes green.

  1. Chess.  Games been around for a long time.  Been playing for years, nearly undefeated in HS, won tournaments.

Simply an excuse to keep my mind busy from jobs and rl.  These games are almost like a job.

10. Uno - Greatest non-standard card game ever.
9. SSB64 - This was the dorm game of 2005-2006. Damage 200%, no hearts, no tomatoes. EPIC. My buddies and I had every single formula, value, and classification down, and by God we had all night slugfests with this game.
8. MS-Dos Gorilla - First multiplayer game I ever played, my dad would always kick my ass heh.
7. GTA3 - Now tame by today's standards, this game made me shoot up my school, rape whores, and do massive drive-bys was all about how much havoc you could create until you got a  "game over."
6. TMNT arcade - Basically my favorite childhood videogame. I'd hog it all the time at Chuck E. Cheese's.
5. Risk - Greatest board game ever, whenever family game night was Risk, I peed my pants.
4. CoH - Close second to CoD2, it's the only RTS I excel at. Nothing better than a V1 rocket taking down an entire battalion of blobbed riflemen. Vet 3 Grens ftw. 400 hours(!)
3. CoD2 - Only game that comes close to the amount of playing hours I put into GE/PD (which isn't even remotely close lol). XFire says I've played 426 hours of it, but that's only how much xfire KNOWS I've played it. Plenty of times I've left it off and played for hours. So at LEAST 500 hours. It's the GE of my PC gaming life. Carentan is my MAP, son.
2. PD - Way fun
1. GE - Need anyone say more? My friends don't play me anymore, and I'm 2 years inactive at it. Still waiting for that Depot 26...

10. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - I'm still amazed and delighted by how big this game is. I played for about 10 hours one day trying to beat it without warps...made it most of the way through World 7. Of course I've beaten World 8 multiple times, fooled around with Game Genie codes...good stuff.

9. Perfect Dark (N64) - So I haven't played this game very much, but I still remember thinking, "These levels are going to be impossible on Perfect Agent" to saying "ALL LEVELS COMPLETED!" and "ALL CHEATS UNLOCKED!" I played levels like Chicago and Carrington Institute quite a bit to get good times, and put quite a bit of time into multiplayer also. Getting Duel 0:06 was cool as well.

8. StarFox 64 (N64) - Memories of playing this with my family for sure. "Dude, I beat Aquas!" "Dude, if you go to Venom through Area 6, it's totally different! Even Andross is different!" Put a decent amount of time into getting high scores here too; got too frustrated to continue as much as I have with other games, but definitely good memories. I can still quote almost every line from the game!

7. The Legend of Zelda (NES) - I still go back and beat this one a couple times a year (if I can find my way through the ninth dungeon, that is). Like SMB3, it was big and complicated for its time, and I'm sure there's still several secrets I don't know about this game!

6. Mario Kart 64 (N64) - Sure, my times suck, but that doesn't mean I didn't have all kinds of fun with this game. This was the only N64 game my family had for a few months, so we kinda got sick of it at that point (we've gotta play our new Nintendo! Let's...right. Mario Kart) Later on, however, I took it up again and had great fun with Grand Prix and getting decent times in Time Trials (beating the three course ghosts in particular).

5. Madden NFL 2004 (GCN) - Got this one for my 13th birthday, and proceeded to play the crap out of it. I completed at least 10 seasons in this game (including seven with my brother in a Franchise we did together), got every Madden card for my profile, and fooled around for hours in Practice mode. I've also had a lot of fun with 08 recently, but this is the game that got me into football video games (and sports video games in general).

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES) - I have three older brothers; all of us love this game. After many hours of frustration, my two oldest brothers finally managed to beat Krang and Super Shredder and finish the game. It was a great achievement for our family at the time. Maybe a year later, my youngest (but still older than me) brother and I managed to finish the game as well...and to be honest, we hadn't played it for that long (certainly not as long as John and Garrett). I started playing the game on my own...and a few months later, I finished the whole thing BY MYSELF. That was the moment I knew I loved video games and wanted to keep playing them for a long time.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Ahahaha...THIS was the game I had to struggle through to get good at video games (I beat TMNT III a couple years later). It took my brothers and I a few hours to get into the Deku Tree! John printed off ALL of marsh's guide (he had to refill the printer in the middle of it twice). Eventually we found our way to the tree, the cavern, the belly (had to wait for King Zora for awhile, but we made it), the Temple of Time and beyond. I've now beaten this game almost 10 times, and there's still new, fresh things I can find in it. An amazing game in its own right.

2. Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) - I have an announcement to make. I am in love. I love adventure games in general, and this game just absolutely suits me. I've gone through the majority of this game at least 10 times, including playing through most of it without hovering TWICE. I'm working on improving my minimum% speedrun so it'll be higher quality (it was already a five-minute WR), and the 100% speedrun will be coming soon also (if there was another category to speedrun, I'd do that too! Any ideas?) My brothers got bored with this game fairly quickly because, by objective judging standards, it is probably a good game at best. But I love it.

1. GoldenEye 007 (N64) - So how could anything beat that? Oh, trust me, this one can. While I may not understand speedrunning as well as some people, I know everything else about this game! And of course there are the memories like getting 2x RC-P90 and Invincible (and laughing at how hard I thought those things were!) Getting a new PR is a great feeling, and I've experienced it many times here (the most memorable being Dam 0:54, Runway 0:23, Bunker 1 0:18, Frigate 0:26, Archives 0:17, Streets 1:57s, Control 4:10 and Caverns 1:04) I remember finally understanding the Cradle nade strat and immediately making huge improvements on SA/00 (down from 1:37/1:49!) And all this is just single-player! I've played enough multi-player to where I can consistently dominate my brothers (I hope to see how good I REALLY am in August). Making long-range shots on Caverns...laughing at the couple times we did try Throwing Knives...and of course the-elite.net! #1 for sure.

The Elite: Misogyny is our middle name!

These are in no particular order, there hasn't been one game that has changed my life, but there have been a lot of games that were fun to play!

Rampage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampage_(arcade_game)) - How can you not love this game? You're either Lizzy the Lizard, Ralph the Werewolf, or George the Giant Gorilla. You go around eating people, punching buildings, and throwing cars. This game was always fun when I was a kid, but there is a particularly memorable time when my dad was recovering from cancer and we went to an arcade and spent hours playing this game. It was the first time in months I saw my dad smile, and I would later find out how close he came to giving up on everything.

Joust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joust_(video_game)) - When I was about the preferred age of Ryan's desire, we had an Atari 2600. I loved Joust - you rode an ostrich (that could occasionally fly!) while stabbing other ostriches and dudes and avoiding the lava hand of DEATH. I have considered buying another 2600 JUST so I could play Joust. Every now and then I'll run across Joust in an arcade, and I ALWAYS have to play.

Kangaroo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_(video_game)) - Another great game for the Atari! You punch things, eat lots of yummy treats, and rescue your joey from some evil Donkey Kong wannabe. The graphics are loltastic but endearing.

Snow Bros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Brothers) - The first video game I ever beat (and actually, my mom and I beat it on 2 Player after quite some time trying). I now can go through and beat it in around 20 minutes (see, I DO speedrun!). Not much to it, but it remains my favorite game to this day.

NHL 98 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_98) - The first sports game I ever played. I had just really started getting into hockey and I spent far too much time on my new PlayStation building my dream team of NHL superstars.

Final Fantasy IX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy_ix) - The first FF game I played, and while I still haven't finished FF7 I still like 9 more. The first time I played through, I got really annoyed with "Amarant" since he kicks your ass a few times before joining your party, so when it asked me for a name, I called him "Flaming Assmonkey". This lead to lots of hilarious moments as he introduced himself throughout the rest of the game ("How do you do? I'm the Flaming Assmonkey!").

Super Mario Bros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros) - Come on, it came with the NES! Well, I had the original version on our Atari, which played like the mini-game on SM3. Sad but true fact: I have NEVER beaten this game.

Tetris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris) - Another given. Don't know anyone who doesn't like Tetris.

The Lion King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_King_(video_game)) - I had a Sega Genesis that game with this game and Aladdin, and then I got an Animaniacs game for it. Loved the Lion King, I could always get to the exile part but I've only managed to get Simba to adulthood a handful of times. I should see if the Genesis still works and try to beat this one.

TMNT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(NES_game)) - I think this game is tough as shit, I only ever got past the swimming part ONCE. Despite that, I love the game play. Donatello rules!

I beat Dragorn and am still improving some of my segments! He's a very good player, but SMS is not one of his better speedruns (his SM64 single-segment is amazing; possibly my favorite speedrun to date). I plan to finish a 100% run also, yes.

10. Chips Challenge - First game I ever played.
9. Mega Man - Awesome
8. Super Mario Bros 3 - This game truly rocks. It's surprisingly big for being a NES game.
7. Mario Kart 64 - Spent countless of hours of multi of this game.
6. GTA VC - I remember how fun this game was when it just had been released
5. NHL 2000 - Spent countless of hours making my own players and teams.
4. FIFA 2000 - My favourite sportgame. It should be since soccer is my favourite sport.
3. Super Mario 64 - Don't know what to say really except that this game is great in every way.
2. Mega Man 2 - I've beaten the game like 30 times or so. Best NES game imo. The music is brilliant.
1. Goldeneye - From its release, GE has always been my favourite and also the game I've played the most of. Thanks to GE, I discovered the-elite.net in mid-2006 and since then I've managed to meat some awesome people from here and hopefully I'll go the the U.S this year to meet up with some more (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Land of Lore III - have to be my favourite game, eventhough I love GE alot and the fact that this game got low ratings from media this one have to take the price.
GoldenEye 007 - Just awesome, I remember the first time I ever played GoldenEye at my cousins place.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 - best THPS/skateboarding game made imo.
Body Harvest - Whaaat a great game, cool bosses, big worlds (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)
Perfect Dark - Alot of great game memories, I actually liked this more than GE back then...
Donkey Kong 64 - I got 200 bananas on this, then my brother deleted my gamefile lol.
Super Smash Bros - Many great gaming mameories from this one.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - First skateboarding game I played, and pretty much what got me into skateboarding too.
Turok 2 - Really tough game and levels big like the Earth.

and one more... meh :P

10. Dungeon Siege and the expansion played this too long probably took forever to level up in the game late and I just said screw it and deleted everything so I wouldn't ever do that again.
9. Counter Strike best LAN game ever cause it works on everyone's computers.
8. Blast Corps killer game got all platinums --one of the rare times I bothered to complete everything in a game so that's how good that was. It's the only thing I've done gaming wise that anyone ever seems impressed by.
7. Heroes of Might and Magic series--played this way too damn much and long.
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl competed a bit on single player but that's about it there.
5. Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Wolfenstein Enemy Territory
wtf it's 5 AM and I've got a test tomorrow? One of my all time gaming moments happened here where I saw one guy open a "door" on a modified map on ET and I fired a rocket perfectly in there all the way across the entire map/screen and then heard multiple of the "death" noise and went wtf? Then saw xxx was killed by wheatrich's (rocket) about 8 or 9 times lol. That room is usually not inhabited and is intersected by 2 hallways I must have hit it dead perfect to kill everyone in those hallways and at the end of them. They didn't mount a challenge to the objectives for another 2 minutes after that.
4. Americas Army--played it a few years. Learned I really didn't care for the clan scene.
3. Super Tecmo Bowl played this probably 5-6 years or so. Am a beast defensively playing any position. (yeah every 6 year old kid discovered the NT dive and thought they were geniuses always made me laugh before I squashed them in the third Q (always took me a half to get warmed up and the game was over after 3 Q's every time then I'd let them "win" the 4th lol)
2. Mario Kart 64
1. I guess it has to be Perfect Dark sure I sucked at it but it led me here and for some fucking reason I didn't leave.

Best Lan Memory was in Unreal Tournament where I had a sniper perched directed at the opposing teams base and I hit everyone with a headshot running out of there on one of the respawns (though I'm sure you guys do that every damn time but whatever I get once)

when I'm done with goal line blitz that will enter my top 10 somewhere (and thanks a lot neo)

10. I'm doing this list backwards (so starting with 1), so I'm kinda wondering what should still be in here and what I haven't mentioned so far. Maybe some Zelda game (MM?) or Mario Game (Sunshine?). I don't have a clue.
9. Mario Bros. 3 - Just in general Mario games are awesome, but this one was my favourite on the NES.
8. Mario 64 - First experience with N64, kept me busy for a long time.
7. Megaman series - Preferably MegaMan 2, which was my first game I've ever played on a console. It's funny how it took me weeks to finish it, now I can do it in half an hour lol.
6. GoldenEye - Never really put that much effort into it, but still keeps me entertained from time to time.
5. Zelda OOT - My favourite of the Zelda games series for sure. Though haven't played all of them. Finished this game maybe 4 times; should finish it again some day.
4. Smash Brothers Melee - Played this game soooo many times, for sooooo long. Tried almost every challenge (Home run contest, Smash the targets etc.) for a good score/time.
3. Super Monkey Ball 1/2 - These were fun times. Gaming till 7am with Carathorn when we were 14 or so and drank too many energy drinks, so we could never sleep and were still playing when dad went to work.
2. Heroes of Might and Magic III - I have played this game since the day it was released, and 8 years later I'm still playing it. By now I know every map, almost every fun online map and I can win everything on every difficulty, but it's still fun anyway!
1. Perfect Dark - For obvious reasons. Got me into the-elite first of all. And after 8 years, still fun to play I would say!

I'm not sure if I forgot some obvious games, I probably have...

Nice topic Jim!

10 : Star Wars: Rogue Leader (Gamecube)

My very first gamecube game. I remember it being so enjoyable to have this feeling of freedom of going in any direction. I had played Rogue Squadron on N64, but the graphical difference was so much impressive, that no comparison was possible. Great moments spent.

9. Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64)

It's hard to explain why I liked this game so much. I guess one of the key point is that the gameplay has rarely been matched: you really have the impression to control your moves. Anyway, I spent much time playing it with friends after its release, like each time a teacher was absent at school...

8. Ocarina of Time (NIntendo 64)

Not much to say, I guess everyone has played it and knows the game. Great times there too.

7. Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64)

Soon after I bought the game, I concluded that this game outperformed Goldeneye in every way. If this is still true from a technical point of view, the impact of the game cannot be compared with Goldeneye since it looked like it in many ways. Still, this game had a big impact in my gaming life because of its difficulty and the time I spent on it, and I was so happy when I first finished it and got all the cheats...

***

6. Donkey Kong Country 2 (Super Nes)

Ah... The feeling I had when playing this game for the first time cannot just be put into words. The graphics. The music. The moves. Everything. I don't know how many times I have finished it since, but at least 10. A wonderful game when released.

5. Gran Turismo 3 (Playstation 2)

When I first discovered this game, I was enrolled in the "Console War", supporting the Gamecube; fighting the Playstation 2. A friend of mine came an afternoon to my house, and proposed to take his PS2. I accepted. We only played Gran Turismo 3. I couldn't be bored with the graphic design and the modeling of the cars. One week later, I had bought a PS2. For this game. Of course, I later bought GT4 and I preferred by far the 4th opus, but in terms of impact when first playing the game, nothing was comparable.

4. Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl (Gamecube, Wii)

Rarely have I played a game in multi which provides such fun. I couldn't separate the two episodes of the series since after having played Brawl I can't think of Melee of such a great game, but you have it. The quantity of modes and challgenges contributes for much in the quality of the game, and getting all the trophies, stickers, challenges, notices etc. in Brawl was enough for justifying the purchase of my wii.

3. Super Mario 64(Nintendo 64)

Well... I still remeber the sensation when playing this game for the first time. The three dimensions, all the different moves. Nothing like any Mario game previously made that I didn't like so much. Hapiness. Wow, I'm feeling old all of a sudden...

2. Goldeneye (Nintendo 64)

Pretty much like Mario, moving and shooting on guards in Dam for the first time is a unforgottable experience. As my 2nd game on N64, I instantly loved it. Still, because of the difficulty of the game (or the fact that I'm not so good - especially at the time), it took me several "come backs" before finishing the game completely. Then came the elite.

1. Final Fantasy X (Playstation 2)

While I discovered FF7 only later and didn't like it so much, the X episode of the "FF series" is the game which had the biggest impact on my gaming life. Incidental was the first time I saw it (a cousin of mine was playing at it); it just looked like a graphically correct game for the time. I bought it quite accidentally, since I had a PS2 because of GT3. Still now, I cannot explain what in this game is so strong, but I recommend everyone who has an opportunity to play this game to give it a try. Really.

Honorable mentions:

Pokemon blue (GB) - a lot of hours spent
Doom (SNES) - remember it to be so stressing when I heard the sound of a door opening, when knowing what was behind
F-Zero GX (GC) - Challenging; fast.
Street Fighter II turbo (SNES) -
first game I have played
Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - while I expected it ot be just "ok" as the previous versions, it turned out to be a very good surprise

Title: Your top 10 most influential games in your life
Post by: marshmallow on January 19, 2009, 05:07:00 am

Ngamer forced me to post in this topic.

Remember, this isn't my ten favorite games. Just most influential. Although if I were to try to make a top 10 favorite list the top four would probably remain about the same (maybe swap 3 and 4).

10. Mario RPG:

The first turn based RPG I played to death. I'm still not the biggest fan of the genre but it made me try some others out, like the superior Chrono Trigger.

It has crisp graphics, quirky characters, music which is burned into my brain forever, and is overall a lot of goofy fun. I never could finish the level 3 challenge though (I could never get past Exor).

9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES):

Not the arcade beat 'em up. The sidescroller adventure one with the top down world map.

When I was a wee lad (say 5-6 years old) my father and I played this game together quite a lot. As any other red blooded American boy of the '80s I was a Ninja Turtle fanatic. I watched the show and had a turtle back pack and action figures, so it makes sense I'd like the game, right? Or so my parents figured.

This game is lengthy and difficult, particularly since there's no saving or password system. Once a turtle is dead it's dead for good. It probably required more dexterity than my 6 year old self should've been able to handle. Hell, it's hard for older people too. My dad was always trying to find tricks and shortcuts when I was at school. Looking back it's all so strange because he never became interested in any other game I played. Sometimes he would watch and ask questions but he never wanted to play one.

I discovered my first exploit here: using Donatello on top of the boxes to kill Rocksteady without taking damage. Take that, short sighted game developers! You got owned by a 6 year old.

The most infamous section of the game was at the end of the airport level where there are several vertical screens where 1-hit kill red walls collapse towards the middle from either side and you must navigate down tiny holes. All side movement must be halted PRECISELY at the hole or the momentum will carry you to the other side, wasting precious time. If you make more than one mistake per screen your turtle is fucking dead. We called them "the squeezers." *shudder* That was like 2/3 of the way to the end too. Absolutely heart wrenching.

Another annoyance was that little jump in the dam level. If you played the game you know what I mean. What sort of sadistic people designed these levels? Isn't it aimed at children?

When I beat the game I felt like I conquered the world. God damn techno dome gauntlet of doom. I just remember those floating blue guys destroying me. And just finding the techno dome felt like the universe frowning down upon me. It was always in one of three (I think) locations, but it's random, and the longer it takes to look the more damage you take and the more valuable items you lose, the more risk of falling down a hole, etc.

8. Super Mario Brothers 3:

This was another game I played when I was little. Several classic tunes will remain in my head until the day I die. They can not be removed. If I get hit in the head with a wrench and forget everyone I know I'm gonna come out of the coma humming action stage and Mario theme music. I played the hell out of this game and I consider it one of the better side scrollers of all time, if not the best (certainly in a class with DKC games or Yoshi's Island).

Of course, this was back in the day before you could save the game like in the SNES All Stars version. And there was no internet and I didn't have a guide or anything so I didn't find those whistles for a loooong time (a friend showed me the one where you fall through the white block, I found the one in the first fortress). So yeah, playing through every single stage...as a kid. That's how you teach patience and endurance!

7. DKC 2: Diddy's Kong Quest:

I list this for one reason: its secret system has colored my perceptions of what an ideal bonus should be ever since I first played it back in the mid '90s. For 98% of games getting hidden things is its own reward. You find them and pat yourself on the back. Not this. It hands you an entire secret world and new end boss, all extremely well constructed. The levels in the secret world are the hardest of the game and have their own secrets inside them which you have to find to unlock the other secret stages.

Ever since, if a game has a bunch of extra junk to collect I am extremely disappointed if it doesn't result in bonus levels. It strikes me as the perfect incentive.

As an example of the type of thinking this breeds in me look at Super Mario World. In each stage there are five Yoshi coins. Collecting them all gives you a 1-up. That's it. Some of them are hidden pretty well and require exploration into areas you may ignore otherwise and I'm sure others could've been hidden better if Nintendo made them a requirement to get into the more advanced secret levels. But they didn't, so a potentially rich replay value add-on was wasted.

Yoshi's Island, on the other hand, pulled this off nearly flawlessly. The only thing it misses is a secret boss. Another good one is Bomberman 64, which had some murderous puzzle stages and two cool bosses.

6. Zelda -- Ocarina of Time:

I'm flabbergasted by those who list this among their top favorite games of all time. I could write a lot criticizing it -- and I have nostalgia on my side here, since this was actually the first Zelda game I ever played. I didn't play the others until after I got a taste of this.

Despite that OoT wouldn't make my top 20 or even 30 favorite games. It's solid and has many memorable and genius parts and I do love it, but it's basically a slower, uglier super easy 3D version of A Link to the Past with mostly inferior music (it has some good ones though).

So why did I place it here? Because my first wildly popular guide I wrote was for this game. Everyone and their dog used my guide because it was the first complete walkthrough from start to finish. In fact, another poster in this thread even mentioned how he printed it out once upon a time, something I've read quite a lot. If anyone remembers a guide I wrote it's either for OoT or PD. And since I enjoyed writing the guide so much, well, the rest is history I guess you could say. It led to five more megs of guides. I look back and shake my head...such a waste. But I had a tremendous amount of fun, so it's all worth it I suppose. And it's all probably due to this game. Right place, right time.

5. GoldenEye:

I thought about putting in Perfect Dark. After all, PD made me famous in the Elite. It was a tremendous amount of fun in the early days, battling with Paragon and writing my PD guide and all that. But no. PD is the inferior of the two and the only reason I wanted to play PD in the first place was because of GE. PD isn't chopped liver, of course, but when I think of "the Elite" I think of charging through green guards with the Soviet ablazing. Sorry Joanna.

This game had an absurd amount of replay value -- getting the cheats, the secret levels, messing with the cheats, Dark settings, personal challenges (beating 00A with Enemy Rockets FTW), speedrunning, trying to beat the game with only slaps...woooo.

4. Super Metroid:

Of all the single player games I feel the most visceral connection to this game. The art style and the music make me feel strong emotions. I've watched every speedrun, TAS, hack (there are a lot on youtube), and I've downloaded a huge library of remixed music that makes me feel warm and squishy on the inside.

Some other Metroid games have had a comparable mix of challenge and general actiony gameplay (Zero Mission was tremendous, if not superior in many ways -- SM is kinda easy) but none will ever approach the atmosphere and presentation of Super Metroid. The Prime series is an abortion. They're OK as far as games go, but they don't' feel like Metroid at all.

Super Metroid was the first game I did speedruns for just by myself, for my own pleasure. This was a long time ago, before the SDA, before emu-rapes even existed I think, before I even got into GE speedruns or anything like that.

3. Diablo II:

I have a love/hate relationship with Diablo. On the one hand it's an excellent all around game with a solid atmosphere, great monsters, preposterous replay value and it's thrilling to play with friends in ventrilo. When I think of Diablo II I'm flooded with hilarious and charming memories.

On the other hand, I weep at how much time I've shoveled into the fire playing it. It's addictive. But its advanced end game is repetitive. Getting items is like playing the lottery. I'm a poor single mother spending her pay check to hit pay dirt. The sickos at Blizzard knew what they were doing though. You can't not do item runs. "One more time! I'll get the item this time for sure! I mean I'm so good anyway it won't take too long to try again so..." Ad infinitum. And once you do get all the good items you had in mind you want more so you can make another build of a different character so you can do different areas that your character can't do. You want to make a super uber god character who can destroy the entire game on hell 8 players solo. And I did that a couple times.

Then they kept adding new areas and making the game harder and harder. Every time a new patch came out and changed the game balance dramatically it was like a completely new game. Which meant doing it all again. The Uber Quests were great, frantic fun with friends.

AND A RANDOM MOD I PLAYED WAS AMAZING! Yes, it's called Median. Do a search. There are lots of youtube vids too. It's a fan made mod of Diablo II. I played it with a devoted Diablo fiend. It has completely different characters, spells, enemies, and dozens and dozens of new areas and quests and it's absurdly difficult and my friend and I played it into the wee hours of the morning and have many epic tales to tell. It's sad. We are both embarrassed. Or should be. On the plus side, I felt it was actually superior in many ways to the original game. It cured me forever, in a way, because it's over now. Although my friend says Median did a large update recently. Fuck him. I hope.

Here's (http://marsh.speedrunwiki.com/d2/median%20pics.zip) some pics I took when we played Median. You can also go back a directory and look at my D2 pics, if you're really curious...there are some pretty good ones.

2. StarCraft:

I've played this game since before replays ever existed. I've watched thousands upon thousands of replays and VODs. I've followed the pro scene for years and years, watched players rise and fall. I've played thousands and thousands of games. I've 1v1ed, 2v2ed, played shared/BGH nubs, 1v1 nub bashing, back stabbed, played epic team games against Ngamer and his friends, with my friends...

My god...it's beautiful. It's full of stars!

Random memories:

a. Playing 1v1 against nubs specifically (advertise 1v1 noobs on BGH) and humiliating them with bizarre strategies which would never work against anyone who knew what they were doing such as mass queens, science vessels (vs. zerg), ghosts, workers, medics, arbiters, DAs, and so on. There's nothing funnier than melting everything a zerg has with irradiate and just wandering around his empty base with a cloud of vessels as he fumes. One guy said that was pretty clever and acted like I implemented a super secret l337 strat.

I remember mass recalling 100+ probes into a nub's base on many occassions and freezing his choke so nothing can save his base. I've gone mass Dark Archon and mind controlled EVERYTHING, including his own workers and built cannons in his own base with his own probes. I've stolen an SCV, built mass facs and recalled 20 sieged tanks into his base. Yes, you can recall a tank in siege mode. Yes, it's funny.

b. Epic 2v2s with my friends against random pubs. Ventrilo is key of course. Lost Temple is mined out, what will happen? O_o

And, of course, the classic (although cowardly) "breaking their will" strat that Breck and I formulated. Basically, if it looks like we may lose (or if the game is going long enough) we both retreat to an island and turtle the fuck out of it. Six rows of turrets. Complimentary units are needed to prevent common counters. Either they kill you or they ally because the map is mined out and they can't do anything. Sometimes we would both be Terran on accident and we would turtle the entire map with turret/tanks and go BCs and just chill. Once both teams did this and I played for four hours winning a 1v2 (breck was alive but just had a depot or something on my island). I lost my main but I yamotoed everything they had until they gave up because they couldn't approach my island and they couldn't prevent my yamato.

Then there was the time I did it as Zerg, against two Terrans. Mass lings on the island rim + spores on the rim + sunkens up top + devourers + some guards + using the rest on mass scourge. My god, it was a sight to see. They almost got me with mass d-matrixed dropships but I held out. That replay is GOLDEN.

c. Shared is EPIC. :O Or Zero Clutter, whatever. Mass money is nub? Sure is. But it's also really fun. And since everyone is usually bad you can be the fastest and have a huge army and mass buildings before the map maxes out. And you can do hilarious strategies like mass muta bomb or reaver recall or offense nydus or nuke or with a friend make complimnetary combinations (mass guard/sair, although you can do that with MC too but it's much harder to do by yourself since the map maxes although I did it once, killed the other team by myself, then back stabbed and won easily, gg guards + sairs + d-web).

I have so many good shared replays...so many classics.

Oh yeah, and if your friend is on the other team on shared, good times, good times.

d. I have a giant collection of downloaded replays that are just...too good for words. They will make you salivate.

1. Counter-Strike (1.3-1.6):

The GOAT video game. Bow down and show your respect.

Actually, that may be a little much. Without my friends (many who I met through CS, actually) I may not go as far. But that could be said of most multiplayer games. Experiences are enhanced with who we play with. If we're in the company of enjoyable and funny people then the experience is magnified.

But yeah...Counter-Strike. It's crack in video game form. Counter-Crack. I'm in awe of how many hours I've played it. How many times have I pubbed? How many nubs have I killed? How many people have I killed fucking around on ice world or poolday or some other wacky custom map whether small or large? How many scrims have I been in? How many matches? What's my total kill-death, career? Pub vs. match/scrim? How many demos have I watched? How many professional games have I watched? How many times have I almost peed myself laughing at the unlikely events unfolding in front of me?

My CS folder is 56 gigs...

I've made the most video material from this game. Two personal movies, dozens of clips both of others and myself, a blooper movie or two, and I have another large project in mind that will hopefully be the funniest of them all. Not to mention the hundreds of gigs of other people's CS movies I've downloaded over the years, including my friends and clan mates.

It never, ever gets old. And I'm more than happy that Valve's attempted rape (CS: Source) failed miserably. Long Live 1.6! A near perfect combination of individual skill, team work, environmental influence, strategy, and heart attack inducing action and clutch performance. Coming back in a match, winning a 1v3 and defusing, thinking on the fly and out thinking the other team -- makes you really feel good inside. Makes that adrenaline pump.

Honorable mentions: Yoshi's Island, Mario 1, Chrono Trigger, Pacman, and Mario 64. The HL2 series is pretty sweet. Portal was sublime. I also find Left 4 Dead to be crack in zombified form as of late... not really influential though.

Ngamer time goes by "Response Units" which are as long as it takes him to respond to an IM. In standard time measure these are equivalent to 31 hours 14 minutes 44 seconds.

7 minutes in heaven.  I remember playing this at my friend's birthday party when I was 16, where I got jerked off by this chick Ashley in the bathroom.  It was more like thirty seconds in heaven though because I came long before the 7 minute allotted time.

Very bored at work...counting down the minutes til 5:00 so I might as well make a list!

Honorable mentions - NBA Live 97 (Sega), NFL Blitz (N64), Batman (NES), original Mario Bros., Lion King (Sega), San Francisco Rush (N64)...probably more I'm forgetting.

10. Mortal Kombat 1-3 (Sega) - Fatalities were the first codes I ever looked up on the internet, it was the coolest thing when we finally got them to work.

9. Sonic 2 (Sega) - Took me forever to figure out how to beat Robotnik, classic bosses all around really. After I could beat it easily I played it through often to see the highest amount of extra lives I could get...I think my record was 47 or something, I wonder if found them all?

8. Super Smash Bros. Melee - Being such a pro in the original (see below), I actually didn't play this game until 2007! It was way different to me at first but put a lot of hours of practice with my brother and by February 2008 (Matis/Woll MI meet #2) we were good enough to beat them just ONCE...one of the favorite moments of my gaming career: watch it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHsrZqhdpM4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHsrZqhdpM4)

7. TWINE - I know everyone says this game sucks but my brother and I really got into the multi and played a ton of hours and have played it at some point of almost every year since it's been out. This is part of how I decided on "TuxedoBond007" when I first joined the boards. We always played 2vs2 against bots Jaws and Oddjob since they had the highest health (although we'd still win 15 minute matches by scores of like 160-30, lol). Our best kill totals in the only 2 scenarios we ever played could very well be WRs, considering how many hours we played them and how few people have probably played it as much, lol.

6. NBA Live 2000 (N64) - The sports game I played the most, and the most recent sports game I own. This was the first one (I think) where you could create your own players, and I created a guy I named "Bi Zaaw" (like, bizarre) who was 7'10" and 350 pounds, but could handle the ball and shoot like a guard...like a combination of Michael Jordan and Shaq (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Flaugh.gif&hash=657f1346088ce2081c398c7379c3a47e4cf5861b)

5. Ninja Turtles 2 (NES) - The first team game I played with my brother all the time which we beat countless times. Probably started playing when I was 9 and he was 6. We took this game up north once when I was 12 and accidentally left it there and never got it back; however, my sister's fiance is a big gamer and has a working Nintendo and Turtles...and at a party a few months ago Jake and I played it for the first time in 11 years and beat it again first try.

4. NBA Jam Tournament Edition (Sega) - epic 2vs2 action. The codes in this game were the best, I forget exactly what they were called but for example the one where you could dunk from anywhere, lol. "He's on fire!" Me and my brother had some 83-game win streak on this game, but there were always problems with the memory and our wins were getting deleted all the time.

3. Mario Kart - Played a good deal of multi with my brother at this and plenty of time trials too, enough to get me into the top 150, if I remember correctly, back in 2003. I consider myself more unbeatable at Kart multi than GE actually, as proven by both 07 and 08 Virginia meets (I wish that weren't the case, lol) and will never forget embarrassing the hell out of the guys I played in that Ohio tournament I went to in May 2007.

2. Super Smash Bros (N64) - By far the most hours of multiplayer I've played of any game, 99% 2 on 2 matches with my brother vs. level 9s, we have over 55,000 KOs between all the characters on our cartridge (ask Matis and Woll, they've seen it). We have always maintained nobody could match us 2vs2, and we'll back that up in Virginia this year! (he should be coming this time)

1. Goldeneye -  No explanation needed.

Awesome it's 4:59 now *leaves* (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Flaugh.gif&hash=657f1346088ce2081c398c7379c3a47e4cf5861b)

In no particular order, and with very short comments...

Shadow of the Colossus - The game that convinced me video games could be an art form. The sense of magnitude this game gives is just unreal.

Perfect Dark - Yup

Grim Fandango - Amazing art style, great music, great story, and one of the best games of all time.

Unreal Tournament 2003 - Despite the fact that I used to play (almost exclusively) low gravity, bombing run, instagib (which I absolutely raped at, mind you), this was the game that got me into online FPS action.

Super Mario RPG - First RPG to really hook me.

Phantasy Star Online - The original one. This was my first (possibly only?) extreme addiction to an online game.

Shenmue - A masterpiece. Really. They need to finish it.

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike - The only fighting game I've ever truly loved.

Ocarina of Time - The wonder, amazement, and joy of my first playthrough was just great.

Super Mario 3 - Still my favorite platformer of all time.

Grim Fandango (and the Monkey Island series) are all great games as well! I only own one of the Monkey Island ones so I didn't even think of the series when I made my list.

Prob forgot a bunch, other than top 3 its hard to distinguish between others.
(went for top 11 due to feeling bad for leaving one out)

11. Mario Party N64 - Introduced this game to about 50 ppl at Uni couple years ago. Subsequent cult following grew and days later we were scheduling 'Mario Party Parties' with alcohol, girls, gaming and good times.

10. Mario Kart Double Dash - perhaps sentimental value, but 4p against bros and friends with this game cannot be beat for pure fun.

9. GoldenEye N64 - n/a

8. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 PC; first PC game i got to work on my n00b PC still remains one of the best for no reasons other than brilliant soundtrack and great level design.

7. Killer 7 GCN - like other games to other people, this is the game that showed me that gaming was ready to be seriously considered above childish 'entertainment'.

6. Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings PC: RTS + Medieval history lesson = the pro

5. Eternal Darkness GCN - before storytelling on the Killer 7 level, there was storytelling on the ED level; fantastic story, atmosphere, gameplay mechanics.

4. Golden Sun GBA - imo GC is what a rpg/adventure game is all about; epic, egaging, addictive interesting well told story and gameplay.

3. Metroid Prime GCN - proof that nostalgia and legacy can be reinvented and remain intact in a new world.

2. Advance Wars GBA - took strategy gaming to handheld gaming like heroin to ozzy ozborne

1. Perfect Dark N64 - really?

10) Max Payne. Another good game.
9) Amped 3. Wacky, wacky game. Hilarious as well.
(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fglasses.gif&hash=bff6876d09c6ed8ee21b0a68387099c1d34ffa13) Paper Mario/Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Really Fun RPGs, the best I have played.
7) Magic: The Gathering. Played this since I was in 3rd grade or so. So many memories and so much fun.
6) PD/GE. Classics, but nothing too special.
5) Diablo II. Numerous days I came home "sick" from school in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grade so that I could play Diablo II. Sadly, when I upgraded to Vista, it no longer worked! :/ Haven't played for a few years now.
4) Half-Life 2 (and any other Half-Life game, including TFC, TF2, and Portal). These are really great games.
3) Max Payne 2. One of the best games I've ever played, period.
2) CounterStrike. I hardly play anymore (for some weird reason) but it's great fun when I play.
1) StarCraft. I've probably played this game more than any other. Numerous hours spent online with Koch/Zerg after school

Well this will be extremely hard to rank accurately and I will miss games but Here I go

10 - Guardian Legend (NES) OK this game just owns severely. I still play through it to this date. Its very unique

9 - Mario Series - could very easily be ranked higher, but i never had any specific game grab a hold of me. Paper mario/RPG/World all were great.

8 - NHL 95 (SNES, Sports) - I must have played 10 seasons over easy, This is my favorite sports game ever. Played this game alot in grade 6/7

7 - Legend of Zelda (NES, RPG/Adventure) I learned how to read playing this game. Beat it when I was 4 with some help from my parents explaining what I had to do. I couldnt read at the time fluently. I played this game to death

6 - F-Zero/Mario Kart toss up (SNES, Racing) Got me into racing games. Played the hell out of these as a child, always improving my time trials times

5 - Super Metriod (SNES)- Purely an amazing game. I enjoyed metroid for NES before this came out alot. May have replayed through this game the most of any other.

4 - Final Fantasy Series (Noting mainly #1 Nes, Mystic Quest, FF4 and 6) Mystic quest the first snes rpg I had played (rented it weekly in grade 1 till I beat it lol) Final Fantasy was a series I enjoyed alot throughout my childhood

3 - Runescape (PC, MMO) - Basically what I play now, at least until I max it out. Another 1-2 years till that happens. I enjoy this game

2 - Goldeneye (N64, FPS) - Spent alot of time speed running this game, even before finding the elite. Basically the only fps game I like. Gotten many WRs over my carrer

1 - Starcraft - Broodwars (PC, RTS). Invested way to much time into this game. 10's of thousands of games played. Played daily for hours for like 6-7 years. Was asked to join Can-A team, and me and my 2v2 partner beat wcg canadian champ and his partner many times. Undisputed Elite SC champ lol

Extremely honorable mentions:

Bionic commando (NES) Loved it
Faxanadu (NES) THe first RPGish game I played. I loved it
Rest of the Zelda series - very good games
Random Square/enix games - They were mostly all great
Perfect Dark (N64) - mainly for Multi. I never really enjoyed speed running it.
Uniracers (SNES) I really enjoyed this game as well. Speed ran it alot as a child

Probly forgetting stuff here

Nice list, you have some awesome taste there. (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

I remember renting FF3 for SNES, and Mario RPG, I racked up a lot of late fees because I couldn't stand not playing it lol, eventually we stopped going to many game rental stores because the late fees were all racked up.

  3. PAPER MARIO THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR (GameCube, August 2004).
+1

It's a real pleasure to see that I'm not the only one to think that (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e) (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

Classic games make me remember things from my childhood especially the music in the game.
Here is are the top 10 games that influenced me the most:

10. Banjo Kazooie
9. Mario Kart 64
8. Killer Instinct Gold
7. Diddey Kong Racing
6. Donkey Kong 64
5. Grand Theft Auto - Vice City
4. Turok - Seeds Of Evil
3. Turok - Dinosaur Hunter
2. Goldeneye
1. Super Mario 64 ( My first game. My dad bought this game for me when it came out. I was 5 years old. I quickly got 70 stars. I realized that i was an insane gamer compared to my other friends. My dad was impressed. I loved showing my skills to my dad. My second game was Goldeneye wich i beat on 00 Agent in a few months (I was stuck in Egypt in a long time cuz i didn't know how to get the golden gun) Super Mario 64 started my gaming carreer wich has lead to many personal goals today. Reaching the top 20 (Maybe 10 afterwards) in Goldeneye. Become DLTK champion. Beat Illu's Super Mario 64 PAL wr and even Myles on NTSC, taking over Marshmallows world records in those games i own and caking other world records in games that i have in mind.

Greetings from Denmark. I'm happy to be in The Elite.

10. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - N64

9. Mario Golf
 - N64

8. Guitar Hero II - PS2

7.Super Mario 64 - N64

6. Perfect Dark - N64

5. RuneScape - PC/MMORPG

4. StarCraft - PC

3. Pokemon Gold/Silver - GB
If there were any school nights that I was sitting up in my room, on my gameboy with my little screen light, I would be playing my Gold Version. I worked with friends to get a Pokedex of 250/251. (only missing Celebi, which you can only get through a GameShark) I racked up a save file with 270+ Hours on it.

2. 1080 Snowboarding - N64
This was the first N64 game that I really got into. I loved it and could not stop playing time attack/trick attack/ and contest. I feel like this is the first videogame I played to the fullest.

1. GoldenEye - N64

(Might update this post later)

Sup Luke (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ftongue.gif&hash=7cfc888ebd66cf455a55fd5e124ee8267da91148) How long did it take you to get 0:53 Dam PAL? Ever thought about coming back into the game again?

Dam 0:53 took about 10 hours i think, maybe 20 at most. I actually doubted whether it was even possible on PAL for a while, but had a 0:55 pause out on a messed up ending (missed the jump), so that pretty much motivated me to get the time. i don't think i will be speedrunning seriously for a while, but i still play multi a bit. i have a friend who is Deadly at multi :P keeps me on my toes. anyway i wish you the best of luck if you aim to take out the current Super Mario 64 70 star run. It was just over an hour if i remember correctly? one of the finest runs i have yet to see.

Yeah i've been thinking about that record too. But It takes a lot of effort not talking about the record for the 120 star run(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsick.gif&hash=147d83ab69333060437ede2e0058676600b3ea8c) by Peter "Dragorn" Illu's PAL record for the 16 star run is pretty cake for me, but have you seen Myles' 16 star wr NTSC? It's like 1 minute from a TAS time(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Feek.gif&hash=5fc5b032ffecc0869b61bad31bcee959c46eea9d) That is one of my biggest goals and i'm not gonna stop before i beat it. Well, thanks for wishing me luck i'm gonna need that too i guess.. Have a good time i'll probably see you someday somehow on AIM or somethin..
