Title: General Questions about Capture Cards

So I am going to make a Halo 3 montage.  However, I don't want to buy a capture card for a one-time use.  Is it possible to find someone that has already bought one, say, in the Cleveland area, and borrow it off them for a little while?  EG can you install the software on someone else's computer?  Can you capture stuff through a VGA cable and monitor?

It would be helpful if someone could explain the basics of capture cards and how they work before I get in over my head.
