Title: Your closet obsession
Post by: Jimbo on April 18, 2009, 11:36:00 am
General Chat desperately needs a new kind of topic, so I figured I'd take a shot. When April 15 rolled around, I asked around work if they had any idea as to what was significant about that day besides it being tax day; not a single co-worker of mine knew that April 15 represented the day Titanic sank. The point of that story is that for my whole life, I've been obsessed with ships and maritime living when most don't give a shit hehe. My grandpa was in the Navy for 22 years, I built plastic models on many many different famous lost ships, I own several books on ships (9 on Titanic alone, 14 total on various other large vessels). Now, for about the last 4 months, I've been watching documentaries that people put on youtube in many different parts either before bed, or in the morning before work.

You guys probably have that buddy who's obsessed with cars or RC airplanes, and mine is ships/Titanic, what is yours? Details?

I can safely say that speedrunning is an obsession (which I guess counts for many of us). Apart from that, maybe reading.. but then again that's probably just for fun.

Before I answer here I guess I have to figure out a distinction between a hobby and an obsession. (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

One day we will have a topic where Jimbo does NOT mention Titanic, and it will be good.

Max, Jimbo would fuck the Titanic if given the chance. That changes it from a hobby to an obsession.

Ugh, god damnit, I guess now that we have the mandatory retarded responses out of the way, can we please go on and have some real answers? Red Bull had a fine answer I guess though...

Anyway people, embarrassing / uncool hobbies qualify here too, like coin-collecting for me.

Oh, and gaming. Company of Heroes ftw.

I seem to obsess over keeping stats about stuff. I used to keep sports stats by hand over every single day of the NBA season (before I could just look it up on the internet). I also kept track of the high temperature every day for 4 years starting when I was 12, compared to average temperatures, made/kept updated a sheet of records like hottest day/most above average, etc. Nowadays for example the times Adam and Greg came over for a weekend I keep track of everything we play and write up some summary of results after they leave to see who ranked where at each game. I also have this spreadsheet at work that I update every day I come in, and put in the time it took to get there from which route I took so I can compare which route is fastest.

Etc etc etc, I've always been a nerd like that, but I'm a math guy so no surprise.

collecting albums (music) is very fun and while i don't have every album in the world, i do have over 2200 albums, which keeps me occupied for lots o the time (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

I have many obsessions...

Lifting - Way addicted, if I don't lift every week day, I feal bad about myself but not to depressing. I also take things before I go lift and if I dont take those I will feal like im getting nowhere.

Drumming - I usually drum 1-2 hours a day. But I probably spend about 2 hours watching youtube drumming videos.

Counter Strike: Source - over 3 years and I cant get away from it!! When I play im like a 7 year old at a pony party, I get all fickled inside.

I like this topic.

I have had many obsessions over the years.

First when I was young (like 8 years old) I was obsessed with birds and bird feathers, I actually would go around my city and collect bird feathers from peoples yards lol and my own. I still have a box full of them like 300 feathers from random birds (cardinals, blue jays, hawks, woodpeckers, you name it)

Then a few years ago I became obsessed with severe weather outbreaks. What I mean is, I would look up past tornado outbreaks and get as much details as possible about the conditions, tornado paths, numbers etc. I was also obsessed with weather maps, and I would sit and for hours look up sypnotic charts for each day there was severe weather and compare to where the tornadoes were or what the temperatures were etc. I even downloaded maps from like the 1930s (tri state tornado)

Obviously I am obsessed with speedrunning, but I think I was obsessed with several games over my lifetime, especially Super Metroid which, just a few years ago even, I would play like every day, not even speedrunning much, I just loved the game and I still do, though I get bored now with it too fast and speedrunning it isnt very interesting for me.

And Jim i dont blame you for obsessing over the Titanic, its a very interesting story and the movie also is one of the best out there.

I still think most of the things people describe here are considered hobbies. Just because you spend a lot of time on something doesn't imply that it has to be an obsession. An obsession in my eyes is something you can't get away from, not something you like to do or are interested in (like collecting bird feathers).

Title: Your closet obsession
Post by: AZ on April 19, 2009, 08:01:00 am

Nice topic, Jimbo

I have a habit becoming obsessed in my hobbies

When I was a kid I was totally obsessed in cars and I could name like all the brands. I have no clue why I got obsessed in it, just fascinated I guess. After that I got obsessed in Lego. And after that I started to collect Donald Duck magazines. And then Pokémon (oh god, I wonder how much money I spent buying all those playing cards) What's worth mentioning is that all these obsessions I kept doing stats of. (I've also always been fascinated in airships, astronomy, high buildings and large bridges and that sort of stuff, but I can't say its an obsession of mine.)

Sports is also something I've been performing (and still do) and making stats of (mostly soccer and I've watched close to all games in World cup/Euro since France won in 1998's world cup). And of course, video games (mostly NES and N64, FIFA & NHL). I'm not even tempted to try the new consoles and I'm VERY happy that I have never played WOW because if I should start playing that, I believe I just wouldn't be able to stop playing it since I easily get obsessed in things.

Geography is also an obsession of mine. I like to travel and I used to know all the countries flags and the majority of all capitals in the world and putting all countries where they were on the world map. I also used to know all the elements and their characteristics like atomic number, melting/boiling point, when it was discovered etc.

I've been obsessed in movies since 2002, when I first discovered the imdb top 250 list. Before that, I think I just was a bit above average, but back then I was obsessed in James Bond movies (now the interest has decreased) and I can surely say that I am the most knowledgeable eliter when it comes to movies. I own like over 1000 DVD's and over 200 books related to film. I just love to see, discuss, writing reviews/analysis etc about movies. (I may not be so obsessed in music, but I've always enjoyed listening to it)

But I think my main obsession is, and always will be, (quoting Lovins) "Keeping stats about stuff" (especially stats about my other obsessions) But not only that, I'm obsessed in categorizing stuff. I've created countless of lists related to film, GE, video games, music, the periodic table etc, and I am particularly interested in "top/bottom or favourite/most dislike" lists. I love to ask people what is their favourite film/artist/food/music style/color etc etc. I love reading Guinness book of WR's and that sort of stuff. I love to ask people what you prefer the most, A, B or C and keeping the answers I get updated.

One of the main reason I joined the-elite was because of the ranks. I got totally obsessed in climbing the ranking as fast as I could and I kept compared players times like "what is their strongest/weakest levels", memorizing all their pr's, their names and where they lived etc. I still think I can name almost (if not everyone) who is at the top 100 atm (GE ranks) without checking the ranking. (call me a nerd if you want)

Lastly, I would like to mention that I am completely ignorant in some areas. For instance: I don't know much about religion as it has never interested me. I'm an atheist and I don't care a jot about discussing religion since it is (often) uninteresting. But I do understand why some of you guys like discussing it. Other subjects I do know comparatively little about are biology and politics.

Nice Jim the titanic. Sounds interesting and im sure building the models of ships must be fun/enjoyable. I'm sure you know alot about different ships as well. It's also interesting to read that david and lovins are interested in weather/tempatures and their patterns. I think thats interesting.

At work I usually jot down the condition each day and the direction of the wind. I also always usually see the news and watch the weather and see what is expected. Its one of those things in nature thats unexplainable as far as pattern and severity of what any condition could actually bring. I loved twister and what those tornado watchers did (im sure there is a name for them but my brain cannot think of it right now)(the movie is also sick on a sick surround sound) again its interesting to see david and eddie into this as I could see myself being interested in this, obviously not obsessed though.

Ackez makes a good point where I dont know alot about different areas. He also makes a good point, that im sure a good percentage of us agree on which is ranks and how each one of us was obsessed with achieving times and competing to get better and move up the ranks. I never really kept stats much and dont feel the need too anymore as I jot it in my iphone. Its like my second brain now. Most of the time I'll remember certain things and if I jotted something important down that i've learned, it most likely will have it for me to view. It also has any program available to anyone, so the access to information is unlimited like the internet. It keeps my brain on standby mode because im not stressing about dates/times things that need to be accomplished as per I just manage things accordingly and get reminders (hour/s before to a week/s before). I digress on the iphone, but I can honestly say that what made me pursue goldeneye was wanting to be the best. As we all know at that time there wasn't as close as to what the competetion there is today nor how detailed every strat has gotten. But it was fun sending in the first video proof of a WR. Especially 1:04 or 1:09 on Facility OOA which crushed the 1:25 or 1:45 that was published in Gamepro. That drove me and my obsession at the time to setting the bar and it continued on every level and seperate agents. The competetion was somewhat limited but it was good because IT wasn't as ANAL as it is now. Which I can see could be very stressful and really unfun with being disappointed. Then again rewarding for setting a WR if that's the case.

I obsess on being the best person I can be. I realize everyone isnt perfect but I feel if I do my part that it makes the world a better place.(I may come off stand off ish but I feel happy and confident deep down and im able to listen to others) I feel god would smile upon me as well as others who got this oppurtunity to live in such a moving time.

I had some obsession with poker but gave that up. I do like to lift weights but not as much as alex=). I like to play sports and be active (like that all american guy you see thats 45 who has the scarf on his neck playing tennis) funny to say that because I laugh deep down at it. I love the female body especially my gf's. I've been attarctive to women and its nice to give love in the RIGHT way. I'm a sucker I know. I have car obsession I guess, I want my car to be the fastest maxima, buts its not nor will it ever be. I've given alot of time to my car though. Great community there at maxima.org.  Anything I do I try to do it the best but try to have fun in the same time, I try not to get over anal on something..but I do push myself and have a drive deep down as a competitor to achieve greatness, as you all can see on toads turnpike as well as royal raceway sc in mario kart. I do get upset with crappy results when I lose or dont perform to what im capable of  but who doesnt, I wear it on my shoulder I guess you could say.

I dont even think I responded to jim's question regarding obsession but oh well. I cant say im obsessed with anything. Seems like that would be too much fun or stressful;)

Also going to Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournaments. Probably favorite game by far and could play it forever. Other then that I was obsessed with Superman 2 when I was a kid. I don't really have any CLOSET obsessions, but I have an obsessive personality. Whatever my current "project" is, I go hardcore on it, for a year at least, until I'm very very good at it (in my eyes) and then I ditch it and move on to something else.

I have done this since the start of high school with: perfect dark multiplayer, electric guitar, kungfuchess, mariokart64, guitar hero III, and now I'm on GLB.

Too bad none of it has to do with a potential profession. LOL

I've been obsessive over 2 different games: Guitar Hero and Counter-strike. GH is just trying to constantly get better, but at least its an addiction where I still have fun every time I play (unlike some people with games like WoW). Counter-strike I've played on and off for about 7 years. It never gets old, especially playing w/ people like Disco, marsh, breck, PDO.

I also have a slight obsession with geography. After someone introduced that stupid "Name 192 countries in 10 minutes" website, I've learned all the countries and where they are (actually did that website challenge with 5:26 left), and now I know about 150 of the capitals and always like to learn more.

I also have certain obsessions with movies. I love lists of any kind. I keep a list of the IMDB top 250, AFI top 100, the Best Picture winners, and all the Hitchcock movies and track my progress going through all the lists. I can actually name which movie won Best Picture in any given year, and can usually give at least the actor/actress for that year too.

I also have an obsession with random trivia. I like to memorize and accumulate as much knowledge as possible. You never know when you may need it!

Dude Cyber, you share two obsessions with me. I used to know where all countries are on the world map. I can also name all the movies who won Best Picture/Best Director category every year and most of the actor/actress. I've also seen every picture, from 1927's "Wings" to 2008's "Slumdog Millionaire". The same goes to Hitchcock movies.

over the years i become obsessed with something until i find something else to be obsessed with. i basically move from obsession to obsession. it would probably be more correct to classify these as addictions, ill get to the obsessions later.

Trains: as a young boy i fucking loved trains. i went all the way to make my mum stop the car when a train was passing at the local station. i had shitloads of train lego, the entirety of thomas the tank episodes on VHS. Trains gallore.

Lego: related to the train addiction i liked to stay inside and build lego. it really helped me be creative and it was some of the most enjoyable times.

N64: it was an addiction

Magic Tricks: ^

Origami: ^^

Record Collecting: this is more recent and i have loads of albums on vinyl now. i have slowed down on buying them though because i have to service my car and buy plane tickets soon.

But Obsessions! you know those tech-deck skateboards... i used to play with them loads - maybe as much as an addiction, but the obsession was that i would pretend to use on just with my fingers and grind ledges, stair rails, books, etc.

that was mostly in highschool, but now i throw my mobile phone. i walk around and every now and then, throw it up in the motion of a skateboard trick and catch it (hopefully) again.

Hitchcocks worst movies are imo "The Pleasure Garden" and "Juno and the Paycock".

We've still never figured out how to distinguish hobby from obsession, nor why Jimbo thinks his love of the Titanic is a closet obsession when he brings it up a lot in the elite.

Anyway...

One of my hobbies is collecting model horses (most common brand is Breyer, there are a few others as well as artist resins which are not mass produced and therefore pretty pricey - many cost more than my real horse did). I've collected horse-shaped objects since I was 2 or 3 and I had quite a set of My Little Ponies. When I was a bit older, it was Grand Champions, and at age 13 I got my first Breyer. 300+ model horses later (and that's after selling a significant portion of my collection in 2001) and still going pretty strong. I'm even currently bidding on a model horse on eBay, and waiting for a resin that I paid quite a bit of money for to arrive. However, none of this is a "closet" hobby, as I have some of my collection on display in the apartment and everyone in my family knows about it (and most continue to help my collection grow).

I also collect McFarlanes, well, the Avalanche players at least.

Oh, and keeping things in their packages is lame, you can't enjoy something if you're too busy hoping that mass-produced "collector's item" will someday be worth an extra $5.

Clark - my uncle collected Beer bottles. He traveled all over the world and collected them. Granted he was an alcoholic, too.

Anyway, they had an entire room upstairs, all 4 walls covered (except window and door), floor to ceiling, shelves barely higher than a beer bottle size, of unique beer bottles. Must have had thousands in there, was pretty cool =)

That is a fucking closet.  Do you know what a closet it?  It's a place you put clothes and other things that you want to hide.

Your closet obsession

closet obsession

closet

Since you guys are all too fucktarded to understand what closet obsession is, I will give you an example from my life.

I am obsessed with soap.  Yes, bar fucking soap.  The shit you scrub yourself with every fucking day in the shower.  For those who still don't understand, these are what I am talking about;

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbabybirdbath.com%2Fstore%2Fimages%2F4ae76d04%255B1%255D.jpg&hash=3373f360722ce9feb7b628d88004cbf4cd15cb98)

Now that we have this out of the way, let me explain.

I am fucking obsessed in the closet with bar soap.  It just smells so fucking good.  Whenever I go to the pharmacy and have spare time, I go to the soap aisle and smell all the soaps.  This is my order of soap bar scents;

1. Dove
2. Jergens
3. Irish Springs
4. Ivory
5. Palmolive

They just smell so fucking good I want to eat them.  Back in 8th grade, I was even more obsessed.  I would carry a fucking bar of soap around with me wherever I went.  People eventually found out, but I love fucking attention so I thrived off it.  I started making soap carvings.  I starting keeping the shavings in a fucking urn.  I'd bring a box of soap powder around with me, which looked like it were drugs.  People would ask to sniff it and they would end up choking and coughing.  It was hilarious.

That year we had a run to the city finals in minor bantam A hockey, which we won.  I brought along my soap obsession into the room as a superstition.  Before every game, we'd all sniff from the urn of soap.  I made a carving of our opponent's logo, and every time we beat them, I would cut off part of the carving.  It was fucking epic.

That is my closet obsession.

closet obsession.

closet.

Why is it closet?

Because not everyone knows about it.  In fact, very few people in my life today know about it.  Only those on my hockey team that year and my class that year know about it.  None of the new people in my life know that I am obsessed with soap.

I think if you're posting on a speedrunning forum, people know you are obsessed with speedrunning.

Thus it is not a closet obsession.

Thank you, and God bless America.

Lol, you think my resume is fake? Hahahahahhaaha do you want to call my references? Man dude, you are pathetic. Why are you calling me out like that? Do you honestly believe I've accomplished nothing in my life? There are 24 hours in a day, you can do a hell of a lot in that time.

OK a closet obsession for me is...

1. When I see a date posted somewhere, such as 10/24/2008, I always go back to that period to think of exactly what I was doing / thinking then. (I have a personal journal that goes back to March 2007 so I pretty much know what I was doing every day back to then. October 24 marks my last week on the road at work and the last week I could have dated Tracy and not having it qualified as her "cheating on her boyfriend". January 20 2009 marks the coldest day of this winter, a low of -19F (screen print to prove it!) and a Thursday before pay day.

2. Playing out every single possible shoulda-coulda-woulda scenario for situations in my life that have gone bad. My relationships, the Packers losing playoff games / Marlin losing races, my life-changing decisions, etc. What ifs are a huge part of my life. Right now it's what if-city with Tracy still (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Ffrown.gif&hash=9bb8520656650a7c2457ae0ae2ee8996e4109fd6)

3. I facebook stalk EVERYONE, it's my way of being in-the-know. EVERYONE.

There we go! Now we're getting somewhere!

Things people don't know unless I've told them:

1. I have researched my horse's pedigree back as far as I possibly can (back to the point where it turns to all "unknown", which is approximately 1700). This was a project that took me several months and led me on a lot of interesting paths, as back in those days there weren't any registries so there were multiple horses with the same name.

2. I only feel slightly weird that I know the name of my horse's great-great-great grandsire, but I don't know my own family history past my great grandparents.

Well Dayle, if your great great grandfather is Abraham Lincoln, it doesn't mean very much for you. Human lineage has less value. If a horse's great great grandsire is War Admiral then holy fuck, you better train him to race (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

I like it when girls can do totally insane things with their hair and makeup and have it look good.  I guess it's the female equivalent of peacocking.  This girl is a perfect example.

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpeg%2F96726861ea579c6392ccfe752ad5bbcd00633adf.jpg&hash=385f35c4364650d0d89a74ff108dd7a0c79bd431)

Now that is really hot.  It shows an ability to coordinate everything perfectly, ability to be organized, they are outgoing, willing to have fun and aren't shy to show who they are.

Given that I'm a more classy, tidy guy, Taylor Swift is also a good example of this kind of look, particularly in her video Love Story.

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi281.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk239%2Fglamourgirltips%2Fhair8.png&hash=3ece26c0c628339b2780f57b6b7c11400e77e17a)

Hayley Williams of Paramore also has this outrageous style;

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.short-hair-style.com%2Fimages%2Fhayley-williams-hairstyle-23997.jpg&hash=796af2eecb01492ce2a9eee9dec83ba55000e77d)

Look at how her eyeshadow matches her hair perfectly.  That's just total awesome.

And of course, Lady GaGa embodies this style perfectly.  She's a bit too outrageous even for me sometimes but...

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi128.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp191%2Fchosen1234%2FScreenshots%2FLadyGaga-PokerFace.jpg&hash=d18772b79c25cf9f94671679859038243bd45875)

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailywacky.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F01%2Fladygaga-200x300.jpg&hash=d47b0df16a78f526755948526428d63b7b45f6ed)

It grabs your attention, it's daring and it looks good.  Girls who aren't afraid to go extreme with their hair and makeup (particularly around the eyes) are my "closet" attraction in regards to women.  None of you knew this did you? (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e)

I don't think I'd like to be in a serious relationship with a girl who looks like these (excluding Taylor, good luck getting your parents to approve) but they would be epic fun to be with for a week when you're loaded with cash and confidence in Vegas, London or Dubai or something.

Taylor on the other hand... she's got the style down and you could still take her to the most formal of events looking like that.  Just pure <333333333333

Hell yes. Especially when it's long enough to rest on her chest (just like the first girl Ryan put up there).
