Maybe I missed it...
Anyway i'm quite concerned about this. The rate of cases coupled with the mortality rate and the person to person transfer ability makes me think this is going to result in a severe pandemic.
Is anyone here close to confirmed cases? I don't know where any are in australia, but there is currently "91 suspected cases". Well, there are still only like 20 really confirmed cases of people dying from this in Mexico alone. Apart from that, the possibility of someone dying from this in Europe/America/Any other developed country are quite small, because it can be cured (I read about this on some government site).
It's coming close here;there is a confirmed case in Germany and one in Austria, but so far no suspected infections in Holland.. yet..

This is mostly media, IMO. Only third world mexico can't deal with it, and people die from the regular flu etc etc. Though I guess it is killing some healthy ppl there, really doesn't seem to be a huge issue elsewhere.
We'll see if it actually blows up into something more. I have a feeling it wont

I considered that although the death rate is... well almost non-existant outside of mexico, that's probably because people are getting good treatment. Perhaps if tons of people have it then not everyone will be able to get treatment.

Even more misleading? The death in the US was a boy from Mexico that was sent to Texas for treatment. Wasn't even American!
It's going to be like West Nile, the people that freak out the most will be the ones that get it (my step-mom was paranoid as shit about WNV, and when we were in Alaska in 2004 we were kayaking on a lake that had a large population of mosquitos, and she kept freaking out, and she was the ONLY person out of our group of 20 that contracted WNV).

I would be worried if this was the first time the media panicked about something like this, but seeing as they've cried wolf like 5x before about this kinda thing, then I really just don't care.
Plus it's not like it's the black plague, or anything even TOO serious. As long as the body can fight it off, I really don't even care what I get to be honest.

I find that the amount the media panics about something is inversely proportional to how much you should worry about it. During actual legitimate moments of crisis, take 9/11 for instance, the tone of the media was very somber. Reporting, on the whole, stuck to being informative and reserved. Additionally, specific instructions to stay calm and NOT panic were often repeated.
OTOH, If there's a total BS story (such as swine flu), the media will do its best to play off of people's fears for ratings/clicks/what have you. Remember, they're a business when it comes down to it. Do NOT ever fully trust the media- always view stories with a skeptic's eye.

We had the first case of swine flu in my state 2 days ago and it was from a 15 year old girl at this school that is almost right next to my school! I have 5 friends that go there and that school has been canceled until further notice.
