Good soundtracks...well I have some in mind, not sure where to rank Lost Odyssey at this point 'cause I haven't finished it yet.

I will not rank them because they are all so wonderful in so many different ways, but here are my top 10:
Mega Man X - Hearing Sigma Stage 1 music just invokes such an epic feeling, you don't really need to explain why old games had such better music when you hear a track like this..just brilliant. Another great track is the intro stage. Youtube link to song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgUZNwd97AA)
Super Metroid - Definitely a game that always comes to mind instantly when I think about great music. While it may be fairly simple and repetitive overall, the themes are absolutely amazing in a dark way and they fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the game. Every single area you go in, the music fits it perfectly and I find myself thinking about the music even when not playing the game, particularly Brinstar and Crateria (after you get the morph ball and go back up, awesome) Red Brinstar is very nice as well...I find Lower Norfair's theme to be quite overrated. Soul Blazer - Not a very popular game, the first in the series of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma (havent played this game). Awesome game, the music seems inspired by classical music. Final Fantasy 8 - Every Final Fantasy game has great music, so I will limit just one FF for this list...and this one overall has my favorite music, although 4, 6, 7, Tactics and 9 also have great parts. I find this one to have the most deep music, very emotional and fits perfectly with the story of the game. This is one of my favorites from the entire series: Fishermans Horizon
Super Mario RPG - Some of the songs in this game may be a bit too upbeat to really enjoy listening to for long periods, but overall it fits perfectly with the game and enhances the experience so much. Zelda Link to The Past - Another awesome SNES game with great music. While I find the Light World theme grows old along with the dungeon theme, this theme is just great: Dark World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgQaK7TGjX4)
Zelda 2 - I just had to... I actually think has the best music from the entire series, the Palace Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIb2GxXHduM) is just absolute genius.
Doom - Not only is this one of my favorite games (Only beaten the SNES version, though), but the music is fucking ownage, it is up there with Super Metroid for great atmospheric music, the game itself is quite simple...you are on Mars killing Demons, but the music is very dark and goes perfectly with the atmosphere. It is quite sad that the later installments in this series went with dull atmospheric music that imo just makes the experience much less interesting. Wild Arms - both 1 and 2 have some insane music, but overall I find 1 has the best. It isn't too western themed, and it fits every area perfectly. Not only that, but even when not playing it is great to listen to. Filgaia Overworld Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joq9WadIMxE&feature=related)
Perfect Dark - I feel kinda bad putting this on here and not Goldeneye, but this game just has the better music at the end of the day. It is so much more complex and interesting, and although Goldeneye has nice themes for the levels, Perfect Dark just makes for a better experience music-wise. This is my favorite theme: Chicago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV3RC2sDwQs)
Of course there are a lot of other games with great music, but these are my favorites.

Good thread. I just clicked through my videogame soundtracks directory to do some "research" for this topic (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Fsmile.gif&hash=1adea417e08e9042f9ce1a5426616bf29f2ca20e) Here are some of my top games:
Goldeneye DUH! Clicking through the tracks, I could "hear" the weapons going off associated with each level. Right now KF7 bullets are whizzing by my head as I'm jammin' to Severnaya Bunker Complex (Bunker 2). I'm convinced that one of the biggest reasons I blew hours of my formative years on this game is how good the soundtrack is. Sure, I'll give a nod to PD's fine tunes also, but GE takes the cake. Pretty much every song is gold, heh-heh. Even the Citadel track ruled, which was for a level that missed the game's final cut.
I agree with Clemens about the Red Brinstar theme from SM... which is why I'm listing Metroid Prime 2 on my top games! An updated version of that track headlines a ton of gorgeous, atmospheric music. I'm lumping the original MP in with this pick, because that also had some fine remixes of tunes from Super Metroid, in addition to some fantastic original music.
I also agree with Clemens about FF8's music being awesome. I really don't know if I can give it the edge over FF7 like he did, nevertheless it is deserving of a spot in my unnumbered list. Highlights for me include Breezy (which I learned on guitar-- very simple to play, sweet melody), Laguna's Fight Song, The Stage is Set, Movin', Lunatic Pandora, Compression of Time, Overture, and of course Eyes on Me!
Which brings me to the aforementioned FF7! This deserves more than just a lumping in with FF8... Hearing that boss music kick in got you pumped for a tough battle. I haven't played this game in years, but I still find myself randomly humming the music from time to time. Hell, "Fighting" is easily the best battle theme of the series for my money. Aerith's theme still gets me every time! Everyone's played this game, so not much more needs said.
Medal of Honor (original). This game was revolutionary in terms of overall sound production, and the music was no small part of that. An amazing classical score played up perfectly to the tense moments in this game, like going undercover to infiltrate a Nazi hideout or escaping from the Catacombs, an intricate underground Nazi maze. Beautiful noise accompanied your every step.
Zelda series.... another huge DUH. Can't pick and choose here, every game in this series's music has been 100% fucking awesome. Somehow every Zelda track ever produced embodies the area it is played in and adds to it, rather than stands out or detracts from the experience. Favorite's probably OOT.
Metal Gear Solid 3: I am in love with this soundtrack, no questions asked. The intro track (called CQC) makes me want to go to the jungle and break some necks. Which is exactly what you proceed to do after starting the game. I haven't played MGS4 yet but hopefully the music lives up to the standard this game set. Strangely enough, I dislike MGS2 soundtrack on the whole.
Metal Gear Solid 1 (orig. PSX version). I was very disappointed when I bought The Twin Snakes for GC and it had an updated soundtrack for this game. The original soundtrack for this game is one of the rare video game soundtrack albums that has crossed the line into regular listening territory for me. It was even on my old mp3 player back in the day before it broke. The music that pulses as Grey Fox gives his monologue while saving you from Metal Gear Rex will live in my mind forever. It at the same time paints the beauty of life with broad brush strokes while underscoring the cold, hard reality of death and sacrifice.
There are many other games whose soundtracks I enjoy very much (DKC/L series, Chrono series, Sonic series, MK series, SSB series, Croc [lol], list goes WAY on), but the above are those that really stand out head and shoulders above the rest for me.

I can't think of, or order, 10 actual soundtracks, but I'll list my favorite.
1. Super Mario 64 - This is by far my favorite. Overworld and the water theme from JRB and DDD are great pieces and I listen to them almost daily before work. 2. Paper Mario 64 - My 2nd favorite from the N64 generation 3. Paper Mario TTYD - Probably the most underrated soundtrack ever, The Shadow Queen and Bonetail/Gloomtail/Hooktail themes are amazing. 4. Goldeneye - duh, too bad Bunker 1 X and Bunker 2 X are accidentally switched in the game haha. 5. Perfect Dark - GE's badass-ness x5! 6. Super Mario Bros 3 - The 2nd overworld theme is fucking brilliant (world 1 level 2, remember?), I hum it a lot.

GE - 1. Control 2. Cradle OoT - Saria's Song SSB64 - DK's level (the jazz part of the song obviously), and also the Polygon level on 1P mode
Probably forgetting several other good ones from games I haven't played in a long time too.
