As always, we're running an Elite bracket competition at ESPN.com, and everyone's invited. Just start here:

But wait, there's more! This season we're also trying out a BRAND NEW competition, it's called the

March Madness Fantasy Auction
Here's how it works:

* we will hold a Live Draft in the Elite Chatroom, scheduled for this Wednesday at 5pm EST
* everyone gets $100 to start, and can send in bids on any of the 64 tournament teams until they run out of money
* whoever selects the teams that score the most points in the bracket wins!
* scoring system: 1 pt for every win, but +1 bonus point for any win that's a seeding upset (by more than one seed- so 3 > 1 earns a bonus but 9 > 8 does not)

We have room for 16 players in this auction draft; if you will be available Wednesday afternoon and would like to play, post here so we can reserve a spot for you.

This bracket challenge is the best one you can win up to 10 million (9 million for a perfect bracket--which is ridiculous odds wise but hey what the hell) and the other prizes are 100x better than whatever crap ESPN does (some cash prizes, others are meet and greets with models who are taken, people mark jones has met, and irrelevant people)

btw if there's a tie for that 9M there'd be a random draw. That situation would be well up there in biggest tilting moments ever.

in fact it's 350k for first rather than espn's 10k which I think is actually an improvement over that espy crap (heh it's 10k this year good for them).

edit btw based on current betting lines this should be the best first two rounds in march madness history cause I can't remember the last time I've seen so many 1 or 2 point line differentials (I would've even made a 13 seed the favorite over one of the 4's lol)
There are quite a few 12's and 13's that would barely be considered an upset if they made the round of 16.

Vermont and Winthrop (play in) aren't auto wins for those 1 v 16 seeds as well.

for those of you who love 13 v 4 and 12 v 5 "upsets" this year really shouldn't disappoint you. the 16's might have a better shot at the 1's than the 15's or the 14's vs their respective seeds despite not liking two 3 seeds but I really don't like the 14's this season.

The Midwest region
I'm pretty sure Kansas was the 4th seed--they drew best 4 seed, traditional power in a 5, great team in a 2, and team that can beat (or lose to) anyone as a 3 with very good mid majors being the 8/9. Have fun with that. Also a 10 seed with the talent to be a 3 seed. This is why they shouldn't expand to 96. This quarter is awesome. A big congrats to the #1 seed now fuck you to kansas while duke (who nobody really thought would get a #1 seed) gets a big fat free ride to the final four--that I still can see them botching [fun fact they haven't beaten anyone better than a 5 seed in the last 10 years and in that region could get to the final four and still maintain that]

East
I'd rant about this region if the south didn't exist (rant on south later)
Texas was ranked #1 earlier this year and could face Kentucky in round 2. Best #2 seed here (seriously why again isn't WV or OSU in the south?) Temple Cornell is the matchup of underseeded teams (I had temple as an easy 4, cornell in the 10 range). It's a shame Cornell didn't get a better first round opponent really--I would've liked to see how good they really are [almost beat kansas at kansas].
8/9 are terrible, 6/11 are meh, 7/10 isn't very good at all though Missouri is brutal to play style wise on short rest. I badly wanted to go against WV this year in bracket pools (call it a lesson learned lol) and this is making it tough to do so. 3 seed is solid not great but not good.

Bilas called cornell a 5 seed. He picked them to the elite eight but that was mostly cause everybody else had some bracket like this for the final four

West
Gonzaga is a bit low for an 8. 12 and 13's are well ripe to beat 4's and 5's here. 6's and 3's aren't strong and the 10 shouldn't have even been invited (obviously that was labeled Mississippi State/Florida and Miss St was 1 sec away from landing that slot--and they didn't want to spend the time to look for another team to put in there cause of time issues [for example, everybody knows the Big 10 title game is meaningless so those two teams are always seeded a bit weird in the end]) and still could well win one. The 3/6/11 is tough to call. I'm trying to come up with a reasonable scenario that wouldn't be K State in the elite eight and am having difficulties (outside of they traditionally lose boneheaded games in this thing like that and that's possible). It scares me cause it's a little TOO easy.

anyone else crack a smile at Syracuse v Vermont? Syracuse is looking for some revenge. or....

South aka the joke region. Seriously flip Duke and Kansas and Kansas would be something like 1/7 to win the region. This is the type of bracket you create when a bunch of people who know nothing about basketball spend 30 minutes creating a bracket come up with while mostly avoiding the standard rules (don't play teams too early who've already played each other). If you stepped back and looked you would've gone holy fuck all the conf tourn winners aren't in here [aside from duke].

However that all said--this region is still the most wide open because one upset can change the whole complexion of the bracket [where the old this team would beat this team but wouldn't beat that team cause of matchups]; best 13 seed (you could argue that's Murray State), best 11 seed, 3 seed and 5 seed that'll play in state (so a bit of a home field advantage) if they get to the round of 16. Best 7 seed. Nova's the same as Gtown world beaters or they'll bust and who knows what round that'll be--7 seed is only pk vs the 10. and the 9 is louisville (I admit I'm not giving cal a shot lol) 6 seed I can easily see out in round 1 or going to the elite eight.
The toughest region to pick I've seen in quite some time. In fact I'd have to look at a tougher one. If you're looking for the next george Mason--it's Old Dominion. Same conference, same seed, solid team, even weaker pod than mason's was. [and notre dame should still probably beat them lol]

random guessing for the south region might just be as good as anything. Duke is tempting cause it's so so so weak overall but they're the weakest #1 seed by far as well.

Oklahoma State v Georgia Tech
South (tie)

East
Cornell v Temple by far. Let's see how good Cornell really was. (also most likely two digit seed to make the round of 16 in that region)

West
Gonzaga v Florida State. lol at picking the 8/9 but the zags have a reasonable chance to beat syracuse. and also a reasonable chance to lose to FSU.

lowlights
the mid majors playing each other again (UNLV v Northern Iowa play the same style so that game will end up something like 55-54 don't say I didn't warn you if you're stuck watching it)

entire south region. That part of bracket should entirely blow up in half the elite's face pretty quickly.

if you had given me 3 teams before the tournament I would've auto said one and done Texas and Wake Forest would've been 2 of them and obv they put them against each other. UNLV v WF and Northern Iowa v Texas should've been doable (and mid majors would've won both)
[also Ok st v St Marys and Richmond v GT instead of playing each other come on] The committee loves to do this--and everybody hates them for it.

Dick Vitale is retarded. OMG VT went 10-6 in conf--it's called unbalanced schedule (only played top two teams once each) and Seth Greenburg is retarded (called winning at NC State a great win lol [though Northwestern and others did just that--Duke and Maryland lost there--either way lol]) Then Vitale complained about mid majors getting in and was like how well would they do in the big east?--I remember one mid major who was literally the last team in a few years ago (George Mason). Something tells me they would've done just fine.

The committee chair constantly contradicting himself and sounding like a politician the whole time. It was sad.

there's wheat's annual preview--hopefully I've confused you all into taking East Tennessee State to go all the way.

Richmond 50/1 to win South (value bet)
wish I could reverse bet purdue I'd bet my entire life savings on 1/15 against.

need a bit of help on Siena pinny has +14763. I might fire a $10 flier on that (to arb vs say duke later obv). (bodog's line is junk)

West
BYU 12/1 value bet in my earlier analysis I had missed that Kansas State has a 7 seed that I had rated as a 5 seed. I see the winner of that game beating the 3/6/11 in that bracket.

East
Cornell 80/1
Wake Forest 70/1 yeah I think they suck and should be gone well out of round 2 but I can't pass this value up and probably arb Kentucky ML later.

Midwest
no plays

Just plunked $200 on that. Let's just say I'm very heavily rooting for one of those teams.

Vermont +18 (I would be very interested to know this ML and east tennessee state's ML edit ugh +2000 or so just isn't quite good enough) only value in longshot first round upsets I see atm is morgan state at +1900 so may have to get in touch with a pinny user for a flier (wouldn't be that much).
Siena +4 [this is one of the ML's I would've taken if I was allowed to bet them--concerned I'm over doing my anti purdue stuff but I just don't see it for them--hope that doesn't blow up in my face--one team usually does (west virginia has twice screw them lol)]

btw--my bet results in ncaa haven't been quite as stellar as my brackets. (I bet BYU like every damn year lol) so lose $ guaranteed or if you do win send me 10% finders fee...

The first three go-rounds put E. Tenn St. in the final (they only won it all once though). The fourth time I tried it, Kentucky finally outlasted that powerhouse... only to be slain by Morgan St. in the round of eight on their way to winning it all, lol.

Anyway, not really sure why I'm doing this. I think I wanted to see some non-standard picks filled in to get my confidence up for picking upsets. But this is pretty pointless.

Originally, I set my auction values based on a projection that leaned heavily on Kenpom's numbers. Now, I finally have what I wanted to use, a projection based primarily on the actual market's odds. I'll use this to provide what should be a fairly accurate projection of each Eliter's expected points. (These will be different from the totals I gave earlier, which were still based on Kenpom's ratings.) Also, the way I translated from Expected Wins to Expected Points was a little crude and could result in some slight inaccuracies, like a middle-seeded team primed for a deep run not being given enough expected bonus points, or any team from a historically successful seed being given too many. Anyway, just for fun.

Post by: sdkess on March 20, 2010, 01:52:00 am: A lot went my way today. Yesterday, a lot of the nail biters didn't. I tend to do well in the early rounds and then fall apart deeper into the tournament, so I'm enjoying this while it lasts. I'll probably get blown out of the water this weekend.

Matt H can beat sdkess if Michigan State beat Butler. No matter what happens after that, he will beat sdkess and resultingly finish ahead of me by 10 points.

Otherwise sdkess beats Matt H by 10 points.

I can only win if the final is Butler-WVU. This would give me the points to get ahead of sdkess and Matt H, and prevent Matt H from getting Michigan State points.

I backed MSU after seeing a bit of gameplay, and my whole bracket pretty much rested on them. Kinda surprised though.

My girlfriend is a basketball coach here in NC and is a huge Duke fan so I'm rooting for them, and I also tend to favor teams from my home state of NC. She coached one of the players (JT Thompson) from Virginia Tech so I was pulling for them although I knew they had no chance. It looks like I'm good if Duke makes the finals and Michigan State doesn't.

Our champion has been determined for Brackets, but not for the Auction!

In the Brackets, Duke beat West Virginia and Butler beat Michigan State, so our champion is none other than: sdkess!

In the Auction, Butler's win pushed Third to within one point of Howes for the lead. Youse owns Duke, but his team hasn't even earned 10 points, so he's well out of range to win.

If Third's Butler can win the National Championship, he will take the Auction, otherwise it will belong to Howes, whose strategy of buying as many teams as humanly possible seems to have worked well.
