Title: NCAA March Madness 2011 - Go BUTLER Go!
Post by: Ngamer on March 13, 2011, 07:41:59 pm
The US College Basketball Championship tournament (better known as March Madness or The Final Four) has returned!

As always, we're running an Elite bracket competition at ESPN.com, and everyone's invited.  Just start here:

http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage (http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage)

After you log in, pick an entry name (like "Ng's Superpicks!") and then click Create/Join a Group.  Do a search for

The Final Four Elite

Our pass, as always, is "elite".

(Sometimes the search bar appears to not work for some reason.  If you run into that, here's the direct link to our group:)

http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/en/group?groupID=46811&entryID=517917 (http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/en/group?groupID=46811&entryID=517917)

---

But wait, there's more!  This season we're also trying out a NEWISH competition, it's called the

March Madness Fantasy Auction

Here's how it works:

* we will hold a Live Draft in the Elite Chatroom, scheduled for this Wednesday at 10pm Eastern
* everyone gets $100 to start, and can send in bids on any of the 64 tournament teams until they run out of money
* whoever selects the teams that score the most points in the bracket wins!
* scoring system: 1 pt for every win, but +1 bonus point for any win that's a seeding upset (by more than one seed- so 3 > 1 earns a bonus but 9 > 8 does not)

We have room for 10 players in this auction draft; if you will be available Wednesday night and would like to play, post here so we can reserve a spot for you.

As of right now our confirmed players are
+ Ngamer
+ Third
+ Shadow
+ wheat
+ QB
+ Come
+ Thingy
+ octo
+ Youse
???

Sign up fast, as spots are going quickly!

btw--this year's bracket blows.  Most of the problems people have mostly have to do with the process (it's not what everyone thinks it is).  There's always gonna be some ridic random cause of it I think.  (and yes, sunday games are completely meaningless for seed purposes as there's not enough time).  That said, it does look like a lot of these matchups were done on purpose.  (Illinois vs 2 former coaches!)  Big east vs big east in second rounds, constant misseeds, UAB and VCU (VCU this year's how the fuck did that team get in?)  Sometimes I wonder if it's really just a week of orgy and crack and then they throw a bracket together  [fun fact--there has been a year and this year's wouldn't surprise me if we found out later--that the whatever you do don't release this bracket accidentally got released and since it got announced they were stuck having to defend it]

The region that'll make or break your bracket is the southeast.  Weakest 2/3/10/hell the entire bottom of the region and the 12/13's would've graded to be 6/7 seeds according to the computers so the entire bracket is really almost like flipping coins.   (that and pitt really doesn't matchup well with the 4/5's)  If belmont was the 11 in this... I might have had them in the final four as an actual legit prediciton.   The West is also pretty screwed up too.  The East is the toughest.  I'm having issues with the southwest too as traditionally underacheiving Kansas and a team I'm still not sold on in Notre Dame.   Also having struggling 6/3's in Gtown/Purdue.  This would've been a lot easier had they seperated the struggling teams (well nova/illinois are gonna get shitstomped on) Should be a fun month.

Wish I was at--Tuscon  Wisc, Belmont, Utah State, Kansas State  are all ranked in the top 25 in computer rankings.  Have fun with that.  Belmont's this year's trendy mid major pick that the computers like the best to win.  The last 8 of the computers... are 8-0 in opening round games.   However, Wisconsin is better the usual 4/12's down there.   crazy game.

I'll do the auction as well.

Also, the interface to join the group is terrible.  I still can't figure it out.  Searching doesn't work, and I don't see a link in the group to add my team...  am I this stupid?

yes octo you are that stupid. if you just login on the main page  there's a big  create or join a group.  Search final four elite  gets you right there.
Alternatively there's a tab when you're in the bracket called my groups.  search final four elite  and our group pops right up.

Anyway, creating a bracket of adjusted coin flips (all 1's and 2's win opening round--rest is a flip)  heads=top  tails=bottom advances.  Most likely this will destroy my actual one.
edit--maybe not..  Nova v Princeton, st>peters vs FSU and wofford vs ucla...... ok need to change adjusted to include the 3 seeds...  princeton, st.Peters, wofford in the E8... oh boy.  St.Peters vs Wofford F4.  LOL  never mind on that... fing flips.

second round of flips --the big 12 won every fucking game.  Jesus.  gave me kansas to win but over missouri  *facepalm*

Deadline for bracket is 11am thursday as that's when the second round tips off (yes, the ncaa changed it because they're retarded--playin/first round is clearly better).

Exactly, Goose.  It gives a list of suggested groups you have to click on, none of which are "The Final Four Elite."  And there is no link from the group that I can see to join, either.  I guess I'll try Chrome at work or something.

Post by: wheatrich on March 14, 2011, 02:55:08 pm
I just did this right now.  Go to espn  where it says tournament click play now.  Your bracket will load with a phrase called  "create or join a group"  click that.  Where it says search groups with the mag glass click on the text (might have to twice) and type in final four elite.   wait one second.  ONE NAME WILL COME UP RIGHT WHERE THE SEARCH BOX IS and it'll say THE FINAL FOUR ELITE.  THAT"S THIS GROUP!!!   total time 8 seconds.

there's about five ways to get to that page so I'll assume you've gotten there but damn guys.  #$@%@#%@

You don't press enter you literally just type final four elite and wait 1-2 seconds and something called The final four elite will fly up right under the search box.

the Southeast  where the 5th and 6th teams most likely to win it's region are the 12/13 seeds.  f'ing region.  and the next team you ask is?  Gonzaga the 11 seed.  *facepalm*  that's right (though the USU/Belmont #'s are likely debatable) the 12/13/11 seeds combined appear to have about a 15% chance of winning that region.  even assuming the numbers are a bit overrated--just throw in MSU for a double digit FF% appearance of roughly the number mentioned.  Kenpom actually has Utah State/Belmont as the 18th and 19th most likely tournament champions (though he admits he's not confident on the #'s being so accurate but he's right in that their seeds are criminally low).

north carolina has the toughest road assuming seeds hold up as it'd be up tempo team, up tempo team in washington that the computers love, syracuse, OSU.    But seeds likely won't hold (and quite possibly UNC won't either)

weird how the most confident I am about any sweet 16 team is actually a 4 seed in Louisville (cause nobody has any confidence in Vandy) and because of that I should be very concerned because I know the last time I said that it turned out to be wrong.

Auction Analysis!

During the auction, my model used data based mostly on Kenpom, but I made a ton of arbitrary adjustments based on market odds in the first round. Now I've got the whole bracket broken down with market odds, so these numbers should be fairly accurate. (Only problem was with VCU and their early opponents, where I had to fudge a few numbers because the line isn't out yet.) Here's everybody's expected points!

Thingy - #1 Pittsburgh, #2 Notre Dame, #10 Florida State, #11 Marquette - 7.67

QB - #6 Xavier, #7 Temple, #8 Butler, #8 UNLV, #9 Tennessee, #12 Richmond, #13 Belmont, #13 Oakland - 7.44

wheat - #1 Kansas, #4 Wisconsin, #7 Washington, #9 Old Dominion - 7.08

Youse - #3 Purdue, #4 Texas, #4 Louisville - 6.44

Third - #2 North Carolina, #7 Texas A&M, #9 Villanova, #10 Penn State, #11 VCU, #13 Princeton - 6.33

Howes - #5 West Virginia, #5 Kansas State, #6 Georgetown, #11 Missouri, #12 Memphis, #13 Morehead State, #14 St. Peters, #16 Boston University - 6.31

octo - #5 Vanderbilt, #6 Cincinnati, #10 Georgia, #11 Gonzaga, #12 Clemson, #15 University of California Santa Barbara - 6.26

Gabby - #2 San Diego State, #2 Florida, #8 George Mason, #9 Illinois, #16 UNC-Asheville, #16 University of Texas - San Antonio - 6.10

Goose - #1 Duke, #3 Syracuse, #14 Wofford, #15 Northern Colorado - 6.00

Come - #6 St. John's, #7 UCLA, #10 Michigan State, #12 Utah State, #14 Indiana State, #15 Long Island, #16 Hampton - 5.83

Ngamer - #3 Connecticut, #4 Kentucky, #5 Arizona, #8 Michigan - 5.77

drag - #1 Ohio State, #3 BYU, #14 Bucknell, #15 Akron - 5.58

Thingy is our 2011 Paper Champion! Good luck all!

DAY ONE UPDATE!

There were 6 million brackets entered nationwide this year at ESPN.  After the first 8 games today, only 11,000 perfect brackets remained.  With the first 16 in the books, we're already down to only 317 left!

Kudos to Nate, who had a great first day by going 14 out of 16 (that's good for the 99.7 percentile).

and obv coinflips is currently leading my brackets but it liked Lville to the elite eight.  Actually if that one had kansas in the E8 instead it'd look damn good right now.

edit--I recommend not doing coinflips.  Brackets 4,6,8 are already dead because Louisville won every fucking flip (morehead never won a one) and ended up in the final four (or better) in these 3.  Only VCU making the final four can save one of those and well that's not happening.  If Kentucky lost another one would've been burned to the ground on day 1.

edit2--wow @ me and QB only having a few differences left (BYU/ND/ucla for me, florida/kansas/purdue for him) in our brackets.

because the champion is worth 320 points you're only competing for the win with the brackets that have the same winner as you do.  in other words the first two rounds don't really matter.

Auction Standings were updated in chat last night, but it seems no one has refreshed the Bracket Standings for the end of Round 1! Here goes:

Stinson leads with 27/32, followed by Kessler and Woll both at 26.  After that things are arranged pretty evenly all the way down to 190 where Nate's dad trails behind everyone.  Cmon Nate you gotta give him some pointers for Round 2! As far as PPR goes, a bunch of people have 1580 but not Nate, so he might have a tougher time in rounds to come.  Too early to be looking at a ton of possibilities in specific, but 6 chose Ohio State, 6 chose Duke, 7 chose Kansas, and only 2 chose Pittsburgh to win it all.

hey, you beat come.

Still 7 teams mathematically alive in auction.

btw--texas got screwed  ref only counted to 4 before saying 5 seconds.  I said out loud "that was a faaasst 5 seconds"  and then replay proved it correct.

Apparently you can't call timeout after four seconds have elapsed, which is what the player tried to do. I had never heard this rule, but it makes sense because guys are usually pretty quick to call timeouts from out of bounds.
Title: Re: NCAA March Madness 2011 - Get your bracket in!

Apparently you can't call timeout after four seconds have elapsed

That is false.

Texas definitely got jobbed.  Especially considering the ref's explanation of "in my head, I had five seconds first", which indicates an even further discrepancy than the actual whistle.  Though nothing was dumber than the timeout to cause the inbounds play in the first place, or the foul on the game winning &1.  So really it's their own fault.

While the auction is a bummer (though I avoided last, like wheat said), the Longhorns loss puts my bracket in a 30x$50 winner-take-all pool on thin ice.  It was otherwise the prettiest KU champ bracket in the group.  Now I need 'Zona F4, i.e. goodbye cash.

The count to 5 seconds has to involve the ref moving his arm 5 times.  The ref only did 4.  It's never accurate and it's not supposed to be.  However, texas made many many mistakes in the last minute so I didn't feel bad for them at all.

I'm pretty sure if 5 eliters replaced Wisconsin at the start of the 2nd half Wisconsin would've won.  I don't know why it took them 30 minutes to actually start trying to win the game (or how it's taken 2 years to realize all you have to do vs Butler is play super up tempo).

SDSU went from the smartest team I saw in the regular season to the absolute dumbest in the ncaa tournament.   I didn't catch BYU florida but box score kinda indicates BYU should've clobbered them.

Can't wait for Marquette, Arizona, Butler, FSU final four?

Amen on SDSU.  I was getting pissed off watching that game.  They definitely deserved to lose that game, but at the same time I feel like they should have beat UConn especially b/c UConn didn't play that well either...

The Elite Eight is now set, and it's resulted in some amazing shakeups for the Fantasy League!

Updated sheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiClwvYRZkRVdEloMWlGYk94dFJMRUpCWEhVdklWVEE&hl=en&authkey=CLqStpkG

Ngamer's Michigan squad was a play away from eliminating Duke on Sunday afternoon- fortunately his boys from Arizona avenged his loss in a blowout yesterday, followed by his Kentucky team pulling the stunner on OSU tonight!  That combined with UConn's strong play gives him control of 3 out of the Elite Eight teams still in the running.

Here's the breakdown for how things can play out in the final three rounds:

Im Ngamer (11:36:52 PM): alright, so since UConn plays Arizona, my min point total is 13.  4 other players still have teams alive
Im Ngamer (11:37:01 PM): wheat's max is 9
Im Ngamer (11:37:16 PM): Gabby's max is 10
Thiradell (11:37:37 PM): my max would be 16
Im Ngamer (11:38:46 PM): QB's max is 15
Im Ngamer (11:39:10 PM): so it's a 3 horse race
CieloAzor (11:39:18 PM): I have a slow pony

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch much of the tournament this year. Work has been crazy, and I had a lot of other stuff going on that prevented me from watching games when they were on. Once my bracket was toast, I wanted underdogs to win everything.

I got home tonight in time to watch the 2nd half of the championship game. I had not seen UConn or Butler play at all until this point. It was hard to watch. I know that the defense and size of UConn affected Butler's offense, but I was really hoping for a VCU/Kentucky final. I don't like UConn, and my cousin went to VCU so that was my ideal final matchup once the Final Four was determined.

Also, I must have missed something major. I thought Cutler (DarkWrath/CyberWrath) was our group's winner when I checked the group last week. It looked like we had 29 entrants with none having a single final four pick correct. I now see 30 entrants and a bracket with UConn winning it all. Maybe I'm slipping in my old age and missed something?

You say that about the championship every year.

You also say that about the summer movies every year.

Is there anything in life you actually LIKE?

Nope.  I'm a bitter old man and I shake my fist at everything.  Damn you, Goose!

Yeah, I ended up winning.

The guy that's in first right now is some random dude who joined after our tournament was over but our group was somehow still unlocked. It's kind of funny really.

This probably goes down as the worst top score of the league to win 1st place in the pool, lol. Very disappointed in the final game... it was painful to watch, but congrats to the Huskies anyway.

an entire team of eliters would've shot better than butler.
