It's that most wonderful time of year... the NFL Playoffs! As always, we only predict these one week at a time (because the R2 matchups change depending on who wins during the opening weekend).
These top four teams will NOT be playing this weekend, as they had the best records and earned byes.
1. Green Bay Packers (15-1)
2. San Francisco 49ers (13-3)
1. New England Patriots (13-3)
2. Baltimore Ravens (12-4)
These are the 8 teams that will play; predict the winners!
Wild Card Weekend
6. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7) AT 3. Houston Texans (10-6)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) AT 4. Denver Broncos (8-8)
6. Detroit Lions (10-6) AT 3. New Orleans Saints (13-3)
5. Atlanta Falcons (10-6) AT 4. New York Giants (9-7)
I'll post some cool stuff later like our Super Bowl preds. Hoooooo boy!

For easier record-keeping, here are the picks posted in the last topic.

GO BRONCOS! (I don't even like Tebow... but this is funny)

Almost looks like they're hanging their heads in shame
-
One of Denver, NY or Houston better win this week. All huge dogs.
Niners/Saints is probably the best game on the schedule this week, but with how the Saints have been playing and how poor the Niners offense is, has the potential to get out of hand. I'm hoping it doesn't :)
Giants

On to Round Two we go! Full slate of 4 games this weekend, no more byes.

Let's see how things turned out for us during that first weekend.
The Elite's Wild Card Weekend Picks
Texans - 12 (Alec, Come, QB, fanny, wiff, Thingy, Lark, Matt, Youse, Neo, Cyber, Ngamer)
Bengals - 6 (octo, Jimbo, SZ, Third, drag, Shep)
Pretty good work by us there...
Saints - 18 (Alec, octo, Jimbo, Come, SZ, QB, fanny, wiff, Third, Thingy, Lark, Matt, Youse, drag, Shep, Neo, Cyber, Ngamer)
Lions - 0 (NOBODY)
PERFECT, go us!
Giants - 12 (octo, Jimbo, Come, QB, fanny, Third, Lark, Matt, Youse, Shep, Neo, Cyber)
Falcons - 6 (Alec, SZ, wiff, Thingy, drag, Ngamer)
Another pretty solid showing.
Steelers - 12 (Alec, octo, Come, SZ, fanny, Third, Matt, drag, Shep, Neo, Cyber, Ngamer)
Broncos - 6 (Jimbo, QB, wiff, Thingy, Lark, Youse)
...and 2:1 yet again! But this time we ended up 66% heartbroken by that 80 yard dagger in overtime.
But did anyone come out of the weekend unscathed?
Playoffs Rankings after Wild Card Weekend
Youse - 4
Lark - 4
QB - 4
Thingy - 3

Because it's sooooo two weeks ago. Get with the times bro.

What a ridicl poor showing by 75% of those teams I picked! Bunch of overpaid bumrushers.
Texans
Pats

Playing it risky feels like my only hope to swing back to the top!

Get with the times? Past events are worth discussing, always. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it! Or did you, ahem, forget that?
Anyway, I'll let the heavy-handed forum moderation slide while I throw down what I was going to say in this related thread, however lacking of the original discussion it may be.
I just wanted to point out how Boss crushed the SuperContest on a per-week scoring basis. Not sure why he sporadically played, but hopefully next year he will pick all year long.
The Saints
The Giants
The Patriots
And Nevermore,
The Ravens

And did Alec turn into a black man slash Ravens fan? If not, I'm p sure he could sue that guy on IP grounds, as the video format, coherence, and personality are identical matches.
-
So I'll be at the Packers/Giants game on Sunday, and they're bringing the 5-billion-pixel FAN CAM that takes a 360 degree shot of the entire stadium and you'll be able to identify yourself once published online. From there you can tag yourself and share that part of the picture with your friends, etc.
Anyone have any ideas as to what signs I can sneak in for a shout-out to the elite? Tempted to bring a NASCAR'd sign but that's not original. Need ideas!
-
Don't have your face blocked by people in front of you.
-
sign reads:
"blah, blah, blah... Packers are on an Elite path to le Superbowl... blah, blah, blah"
or something to that tune.

I'll say SOMETHING along the lines of...
2. Baltimore Ravens (12-4) > 3. Houston Texans (11-6) by 7
1. New England Patriots (13-3) > 4. Denver Broncos (9-8) by 14
3. New Orleans Saints (14-3) > 2. San Francisco 49ers (13-3) by 3
1. Green Bay Packers (15-1) > 4. New York Giants (10-7) by 10

Go Niners! One of the best football games I've ever watched last weekend. Won't pretend to be a diehard Niners fan (all but abandoned them while they sucked and I lived in SD), but still fun to experience the bay area sports fever right now!

The Elite's W2 Picks
Saints -15 (Alec, Jimbo, Neo, Thingy, Lark, Cyber, fanny, Come, QB, drag, wiff, Matt, SZ, Youse, Ngamer)
49ers - 3 (octo, Third, PL)
Ouch, very bad showing for us, especially considering the 9ers were playing at home. Guess beating up on the Lions defense isn't quite as impressive as we thought!
Packers - 13 (Alec, Jimbo, Neo, Thingy, Lark, Cyber, Third, Come, QB, drag, wiff, Matt, Ngamer)
Giants - 5 (octo, fanny, SZ, PL, Youse)
A SLIGHT improvement, but still not a very good result for us.
Patriots - 14 (Alec, Jimbo, Neo, octo, Lark, Cyber, fanny, Third, QB, Matt, SZ, PL, Youse, Ngamer)
Broncos - 4 (Thingy, Come, drag, wiff)
Wow, more Bronco believers than I expected! Quite odd that THIS game came so close to being our most-expected upset of the weekend.
Ravens - 15 (Alec, Jimbo, Neo, octo, Thingy, fanny, Third, Come, QB, drag, wiff, Matt, PL, Youse, Ngamer)
Texas - 3 (Lark, Cyber, SZ)
Great effort from the Texans, but they couldn't quite make these 3 Eliters look like geniuses. Special congrats to Ngamer for his perfect prediction of "Ravens by 7"!
Congrats to octo and PerfectLight for the only perfect 4-0 weeks! No one quite managed the opposite, but several came close at 1-3: Come, Lark, Cyber, drag, wiff, and Thingy.
Playoffs Rankings after Week 2
Youse - 7
octo - 6
QB - 6
fanny - 6
Lark - 5

wiff - 4
Alec - 4

Appears that Youse's hot streak from Superbetting has carried over to the postseason.... but he can still be toppled in these final two weeks!

Your games to decide this year's Super Bowl matchup... (have until Sunday morning to get these in, no Saturday games this weekend).
Conference Championships
2. Baltimore Ravens (13-4) AT 1. New England Patriots (14-3)
4. New York Giants (11-7) AT 2. San Francisco 49ers (14-3)
EDIT - Now let's take a look back and see how everyone did with their Super Bowl predictions back on Week One!
Superbowl pick:
Packers 31, Patriots 21 (take that to the bank!)
Whoa, surely his best pred ever! Won't QUITE work out, but props for getting both #1 seeds.
Steelers 24 - Eagles 20
This would have been a true "dream" matchup... on paper!
Colts 27, Falcons 13
*laughs for an hour*
Steelers 31 Eagles 17
Little better than QB's guess, I'll give him that much.
Eagles 27 Patriots 17
Congrats for one half of that pick!
Packers 31
Chargers 21
Heck, I'd have picked the same way myself!
My pick is Eagles 38 - Texans 21
I keep editing back and forth between Eagles and Packers. Think the Packers have the better team overall but the Eagles seem custom engineered to defeat the Packers 1v1 if it comes down to that. What I'm really afraid if is losing to the Lions or some upstart team a la Cards in 2008.
The AFC pick is 40% not wanting to be all like "me too" (Steelers have the best AFC--AND Elite FFL-- team), 80% wishful thinking (because F the Steelers, Pats, & Jets... and picking the Ravens never seems to pan out), and 30% "hey, a case could be made for this really happening".
Hmmmm... was right about the Packers being the better overall team, wrong with taking the Eagles anyway, but major props for his "30% chance" AFC team that came within 7 points of making it to next weekend! If not for those injuries to three of their top four players, Youse could very well have been the only one to pick the AFC correctly.
Falcons 30, Steelers 10
UH OH!
Eagles 21, Jets 13
:v
*snorts in derision*
Steelers 28, Eagles 17
Not looking so hot...
So for the record, that's a total of zero picks for 3 of our 4 possible actual SB representatives (not a single Eliter went with the 49ers, Giants, or even the Ravens). Let's count on Ng to bail us out!
Lot of wacky preds up in here... time to show you how the 2011 season is really going to play out!

Super Bowl Result
Green Bay Packers - 38, San Diego Chargers - 35
AFC: Slotted the East perfectly thanks to the Bills' late season collapse, whoo! Correctly guessed that Manning would miss some games and let the Texans take the South, niiiiice. Just didn't realize he'd miss the ENTIRE season, would have had another perfect division if so. North was ruined by those stupid Bengals, who also killed my Won't Make the Playoffs bet, but I slotted the rest of that correctly otherwise (if you call 12-4 Steelers/Ravens a tie, which I do). West was a disaster! But considering they all finished with 8 or 7 wins, I'll just mark it Too Close To Call and move on.
NFC: Perfect NFC North, booyah. Perfect South as well, expect for those stupid Bucs losing 10 games in a row to end the season, or whatever it was. East, uhhhh, well got the Redskins right and everyone else won 8 or 9 games, so that's a wash. West was my biggest blunder of all... not sure why I liked the Rams so much, but even then there was no excuse for keeping the 49ers below the Cards. Ugly, really ugly!
Since I'm my own harshest critic, overall I'll score myself at a B+ for this season.
Final Four: Welp, nailed both #1 seeds as hosting those games, and frankly neither the Eagles nor Chargers have any excuse for missing the playoffs given their skill levels and how hard the other teams in their division tried to fumble away their leads and let them back into the playoff race. But taking the Bolts to make the Super Bowl was admittedly a bit foolish on my part!

I feel confident that the Texans would be in AT LEAST the AFC title game without their injuries this year. As for NFC, 's/Eagles/Giants/g' my prediction and I'm all good, right down to the "custom engineered to beat the Packers 1v1" part. (I'm more infuriated than ever after watching these playoffs turn into easy mode that Reid failed to go over .500 with the talent he had... We would have crushed this.)
So, the SB could be a rematch of two different SBs from the past ~decade? gg parity. Harbaugh Bowl PLZ.
Picks to follow. For now, just wanted to lament how much of a mental coinflip my lone blemish (SF/NO) was for me. At least I stacked paper with SF +3.5

The Giants and the Patriots, obv

Slightly less retarded performance from my picks last week. Sadly it looks like I'm out of the race now so I'm forced to pick:

After thinking it over all week during the brief periods where I wasn't crying, I've decided to go with
1. New England Patriots (14-3) > 2. Baltimore Ravens (13-4) by 14
4. New York Giants (11-7) > 2. San Francisco 49ers (14-3) by 10

Rain all game, you say????
Pick Change = NINERS

Some of my more favourite twitter reactions:
"OMG! The #Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff tried to shoot himself moments after the loss to the Patriots. Luckily, the bullet went wide left."
""Billy Cundiff tried to hang himself after the game, but couldn't kick the chair out from under him""
"Breaking: Billy Cundiff misses the bus home and is stuck in New England for the night."
"Ray Lewis was asked if this was his last season in Baltimore, he said absolutely not. They did not ask the same question to Billy Cundiff"
-
Also, as much as it pains me
Patriots/Brady
-
I will be taking the Giants. MVP = Victor Cruz

retarded superbowl

Giants... i guess

std kicker getting all the blame when there's plenty to go around. Pretty terrible balt didn't call a TO when cundiff got rushed that much but w/e. (lol if he was expecting Belicheck to do that he's not an idiot like everyone else)
Pretty great games overall though Alex Smith is terrible. loved his quarter by quarter morphing
1st Q--OMG WHICH OPEN WR DO I THROW TEH BALL TO? NO, I"LL JUST SIT HERE AND TAKE THIS SACK INSTEAD
2nd Q--I'm only looking at the TE
3rd Q--pocket still intact, take off and run anyway and do it every play
4th Q--GROUND YOU ARE OPEN I THROW BALL AT YOU!!!
lol 49ers kick and punt returner. What's this replay thing? surely it can't give the giants the ball and show I was obviously wrong and didn't even try fielding it when I could've anyway, oh
lol Brandon Jacobs. Still thinks he should be juking CB's and S's and gets tackled by them for it when all he has to do si run them over and they'll probably NEVER tackle him. Shouldn't even be a split share in nyg, Bradshaw 1, Jacobs waiver wire.
lol coaching. 4th and 1 all the time, we have a power running game, hell SF even has a tebow like QB. SEND OUT THE PUNTING/KICKING TEAM!!!!
Lee Evans, I"VE GOT A GAMEWINNING TD I"LL CELEBRATE RIGHT oh shit.
Giants, Pats should be the best overall SB we could've gotten in terms of the game so that's fine.
Wilfork was the difference for the Pats (slash crappy ravens O line who couldn't even block him) win imo not the kicker. NE probably wins in OT. THey might've even onside kicked if they had lost the toss. What was cundiff gonna do to make them pay kick a field goal?

4th Q--GROUND YOU ARE OPEN I THROW BALL AT YOU!!!"
100% correct. Third quarter was honestly absurd, Smith had a few series in the game that were unbelievably bad, and overall it's probably the worst playoff performance I've ever seen from a QB. He completed one (count it ONE) pass to a wide receiver all game (for three yards), otherwise he dumped it to Gore or hit Vernon with lobs. 49ers offense/special teams blew the game so bad it's not even funny.
I'll pick the Patriots to win Super Bowl XLVI, Wes Welker MVP.
-
I love how local SF radio has been talking about Alex Smiths "transformation" all week, and that we should have been patient with his 3 coaches and 7 OCs or whatever it is. One week later, he's back to Alex Smith.
I agree with a lot of what wheat said - some weird/frustrating play calling. There was a long stretch where the Giants couldn't stop the run, but the Niners insisted on passing incomplete every 1st down.
Anyway, I'm more upset I have to deal with ESPN and a Brady/Manning superbowl for 2 weeks. I may just have to boycott anything besides networks playing hockey for the next 2 weeks.
I'll pick..
Patriots / Brady
aurgh!
-
The constant 4th and 1's in opp territory and punting was the worst. It's like coaches strategize before the game of "you know, how can I look good and still blow this so I don't have to work for 2 more weeks?" Considering playoffs, most of the time you'll get a coach to actually try (ala Mike Smith in atl, yeah kicking those FG's instead sure would've won that game you moron analysts) but since he got drilled (they lost 24-2? what they were gonna kick 8 field goals?) for it [you have to kick on the road!!! that's like saying you should play checkers differently based on the color of the checkerboard ie it makes no sense)
Can't wait for coughlin punting from NE 38 down 7 at any point in the SB.
but in those conf games; it was a standard mix but nobody went for it (in a non super obvious situation) on fourth aside from that ravens 4th and 6 (flacco threw it away). I was disappointed.
Essentially it comes down to
the object of the game is to score more points than the other team. Punting doesn't score points.
also
QB's shouldn't get credit for throwing the ball out of bounds* DON"T TAKE A RISK. If that were true, just kneel the ball every play and punt. Oh wait, that's the dumbest strategy I've ever heard.
The 7 OC's for hindering Alex still is a very good point though octo. It's extremely difficult for a QB to run an offense effectively in just one season. I can't think of an example of great success first year with that system (and new to the playbook, we're not counting rodgers sitting with it for w/e years) offhand.

Ng Bets the NFL 2012
Risking $5 to win $5 that Peyton Manning signs with the Miami Dolphins this offseason
-
MOSS TO THE NINERS!!!!!
*MANNING TO THE NINERS AS WELL??!!!!!!!!!*
-
Flynn will be a Dolphin (when Manning says LOL and goes to the 49ers, then Philbin realizes Flynn is pretty solid and he insta-signs with his old QB coach who now leads Miami).
LOL JON.
-
Moss would be a great signing for 49ers/Bears but for the most part he'd have to be used as a red zone target only pretty much and the nfl roster doesn't really have space for that kind of role* (the bears wouldn't use a roster spot like that anyway)
*because a lot of teams have 2 kickers and nonsense like that
5 kickers got franchised and a punter. NFL teams and GM's confirmed still really really stupid.
Flynn was Jarmarcus Russell's backup. He's this offseason's version of Kevin Kolb. Everyone thinks he's better than he actually is because of sample size and some team falls for it and overpays. He could end up good or solid sure like a Hasselbeck type, but historically it's a fail with those guys.
No mention of the RGIII trade eh? lol redskins (though I think the trade was fine for washington--they were going to be bad anyway without him, this just puts millen era lions level of suck into the possibility of this deal but if you hit, it's worth it) Everyone assumes rams dynasty but historically those teams usually just make one playoff appearance and that's it out of the deal. That said, I think draft picks are huge in this era of not paying them $ and everyone having a salary floor. I expect a bit of a wild overspending FA because of that floor. (backup WR's like Mario Manningham are expected to get 8M/yr deals--ridiculous)
Regarding manning, I don't see him going to SF. He 100% won't go to the nfc east (eli) or the colts (cut) or the chargers (again, eli). Jets extended Sanchez in name only (actual $ involved guaranteed was peanuts) but I think that's b/c they can't afford peyton.
Only teams left
Denver (40M cap room), Miami, Houston (idk, cap room), KC (actually has an offense). Jags have a QB need but idk why the hell Peyton would want to go there with almost zero offensive weapons to use in the passing game. Arizona's interested but has no O line to keep him upright, Seattle maybe, SF probably not, and everybody else is a big fat no.
He'll sign soon while the demand is high. Once teams sign guys like flynn or decide on other things there's less spots for him to go.
I have it between Denver and Miami myself. He'll probably go through the gauntlet of teams though for show.
-

Manning to SF
-
WOW, both Jimbo and fanny fell flat on their faces with those preds. Talk about embarrassing!
-
Booo, should have been Titans :(
-
It makes/made the most sense for Manning to go to SF, unless he was so die-hard against playing his brother every other year? Denver still baffles my mind unless him and John Elway are a long lost uncle/nephew combo!
Flynn made the most sense going to Miami, and I think he would have if Ireland was willing to fork over more cash than what his offer was (3 yr 22M); they dropped the ball on that one.
If Manning became a Titan, certainly Tennessee @ Indy would have been a Sunday Night game!

i like Manning to Denver. if Tebow doesn't get tossed out like yesterday's garbage, then he could easily be in a Favre/Rodgers type situation and in 3 or 4 years come in and tear the league up with his mad skillz

All making fun of Jimbo/fanny aside though...
Peyton Manning just turned down the chance to throw to
Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Frank Gore
behind an offensive line that allowed Alex Smith to win 14 games last year, playing across from the league's #1 defense in an awful division in a warm weather city...
in favor of throwing to
Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Virgil Green, Willis McGahee
playing across from not the league's #1 defense in a cold weather city, in the wind, one mile in the sky.
What the FLIP Peyton?

Broncos are already trying to trade Tebow away. Not sure what Peyton could teach someone with that kind of playstyle anyway.
Not sure I understand the Broncos choice either. I guess Come & Dayle are happy at least?

Pretty dumbfounded that Peyton chose Denver over SF, basically for the same reasons Ng posted. All I can think of is that he TRULY didn't want to play in the same conference as Eli, that there was no way the Niners were going to pony up 5/$96,000,000 for him, and that his relationship with Elway is really that strong.
Still, I don't think he'll win a championship with Denver, but I feel he'd at least have had a shot at a few with SF, and that all he needs to add to his arsenal of stats/money/fame is more rings.
Let me just say though, that if the Niners trade for Tebow as rumored this morning, I'm going to absolutely lose it. In my opinion, Tebow isn't even a worthy backup. Of course the Broncos want to trade him, why would they waste their time developing Tebow for 3-4 years? I'd much rather develop a quarterback who at least knows how to throw the ball for starters. All Tebow is good for is energizing your team and selling tickets/gear. The Niners don't need either, with a new stadium being built in the heart of Silicon Valley and Jim Harbaugh.

in the wind
Huh? San Fran is at least as windy, if not more so.
