Title: 2011 Oscars! [results up, plus Ng's SEASON IN REVIEW]
Post by: Ngamer on February 21, 2012, 10:13:02 pm
2011's best in film will be rewarded this Sunday night at 8pm EST, which means its time for the millionth annual Elite Oscar pool!  It's a competition that Ngamer won 8 years in a row (or so), but the last few years someone has been able to just edge him.  This year will that hero be YOU?

In the past I'd post a png of the entire ballot here and everyone would fill in the dots in Paint.  It was a very standard pick 'em pool, which was generally okay but never all that exciting, given how frequently the heavy favorites win the most important awards.  We're trying something new this year to freshen things up; feast your eyes on this fantastic Contest form QB set up for us!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtcM-UrNP3JRdGY3bEV5ZGZvOHlBVVB5dTE5OVRVa2c#gid=0 (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtcM-UrNP3JRdGY3bEV5ZGZvOHlBVVB5dTE5OVRVa2c#gid=0)

The contest has been turned on its head by using the REAL LIFE VEGAS ODDS for every category!  Now, you could still select only the big favorites, but doing so will only earn you +2 or +1 per category in most cases.  That will make it pretty easy for someone else to catch you,  if said picker makes a couple bold upset picks and is able to get them correct.  Or if there's a huge upset that no one would expect, you could win the thing just by calling that one award correctly!  (Maybe.)

We've also added a few "silly prop bets" to the bottom of the form that you can guess at to earn a couple extra points.  Should be fun!

Just remember to check the box for "Elite" when you send in your picks, so you'll be scored against the rest of us.  If you also post on the 2+2 boards though, feel free to check the POG box and play with those guys as well.

Good luck!

I've seen 62 movies from 2011 (30 of the Oscars nominated (possibly most in the elite?)). Might post my personal top 10 from 2011 also, but I think personally the overall quality this year's Oscar is terribly low. 2010 had one 10/10, and a few 9's from what I remember. I believe my highest rating 2011 for any movie is 8/10.

Well, as far as the nominated movies go, I've seen:

Moneyball, Tree Of Life, Warrior (LOVED Nolte!!!), Harry Potter 7.2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rango, La Luna, Drive, Transformers 3.

Honestly not too interested this year, as none of these movies really moved me (out of what I've seen), but there are several that I'm VERY excited to see!

Nothing from 2011 was great that I've seen, so I don't even feel like I could put together any kind of "best of 2011", however, when I get home I will review my lists and see if I can put something together.

As for the Oscars, I think The Artist will clean house, but other than that I have no idea.

I've seen a little over 50 movies from 2011, but I'm pretty disappointed with the ones nominated. Some really great ones didn't get a single nomination, but you'll see these in my top 10!

Gratz Pat! :)

Here's my top 10 2011 movies (out of a total of 21)

A Separation
Midnight in Paris
Hugo
The Artist
Drive
Rango
Bridesmaids
The Tree of Life
Warrior
Apflickorna

Worst film of 2011: Bad Teacher

edit: this year was very nostalgic as far as plots goes. I mean "Hugo" had Georges Méliès and early silent films in it, "The Artist" is a silent film set in 20s/30s, "My Week with Marilyn" is about Marilyn Monroe and in "Midnight in Paris" we could see Luis Buñuel and Ernest Hemingway.

Time for my heavily-anticipated

2011 Oscars Review

First things first: this wasn't a great year for Academy-nominated movies (OR non-nominated movies, for that matter).  And I say this as someone who actually liked all nine Best Picture candidates!  The problem was they all struck me as "pretty good," but nothing pulled away from the pack and really stood out as "great."  As a result I'd have to rate this as the weakest crop of Best Pic options since... *goes back and checks* eh let's say 2004 ($million baby, aviator, finding neverland, ray, sideways).

Due to the above, this ceremony was obviously at a major disadvantage going in- given that, I think they did a wonderful job!  Billy Crystal was the right choice as host for a night when all the top movies were about looking back in time to the "good old days," when there was drama over which of two 82 year old men was going to win an 84 year old award, when our greatest living actor won her first award in 29 years.  Some have been bashing him because all his jokes would have worked just as well in 1980, but HECK, it's what the night called for!

Now let's break down those Oscar moments into

THE GOOD

* SBC spilling Kim Jon-Il's ashes on Ryan Seacrest.  best publicity stunt in years

* Bret from Flight of the Conchords and Dean Pelton from Community are now Oscar winners, wow!

* some decent moments from presenters: Bridesmaid's girls doing the Scorsese drinking game was nice, Ferrell/Galifianakis pulled off some decent physical comedy, but my favorite was my girl Emma Stone cementing her Hollywood It Girl status while slamming Ben Stiller for being the worst presenter ever

* Dragon Tatoo's sweet 50 to 1 upset for Editing to keep from being shut out

* Hugo dominating the technical awards with very well deserved wins

* the right Foreign Language film won, OMG!  (this only happens once every 10 years, got to celebrate it)

* classy, understated In Memoriam segment (glad they've been smart enough to mute the audience mic these past few years; was so awkward having to listen for who got the loudest cheers)

* heartfelt (but short!) speeches from pretty much all the winners

* really speedy presentation and short running time, by Oscar standards

* those "magic of the movies" talking head interviews with all the biggest stars talking about the films they saw at 6 years old that made them fall in love with the theater were pretty cute, I thought!  except...

THE BAD

* ...Adam Sandler had to keep popping up and destroying their momentum.  "I put a little more of myself into every movie."  oh WOW, how much of yourself did you pour into Jack and Jill, you hack?

* it should have been Viola Davis' night.  no offense to Meryl, as it's ridic that she went three decades without a win, but did we REALLY need to give her this Oscar, considering she's sure to be nominated for three more of them in the next five years?

* what the FLIP was that Cirque du Soleil nonsense?  I guess they felt they needed some kind of performance, since there's usually 3-5 live Best Song performances throughout the night, but they were dead wrong.  just cut it and make the ceremony 10 minutes shorter please!

* Artist winning Best Pic was fine, but this was such a "nothing stood out" year that I'd rather have seen the awards split in a few more directions.  like, it was great to see Descendants and Midnight in Paris take screenplay but if on top of that Hugo had won the most awards and Artist took Pic but something ELSE took Best Director, that would have been ideal

* my awful, awful predictions

That covers it!  Overall I award this ceremony a solid

B+

Now it's on to the most prestige award in Hollywood history,

Ngamer's *double take* whoa! Award

Early buzz had this going to Stacy Keibler, who I must admit looked incredible in her golden statue dress, or Bérénice Bejo who was as impossibly cute in person as she had been on the big screen.  And the sentimental choice would have been Emma Stone, but ehhh, that giant red bow was a bit much.  Instead I'm going to hand this to...

Jessica Chastain!

(https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.upload.speedrunwiki.com%2Fimages%2Fgirls%2Fjessicachastainoscar2011.png&hash=a2a2d48a35b52fdc1e0f862b7cd937e0377f28fd)

A fitting end to 2011, considering she was the year's true Best Actress.  (If you take her great work in The Help, Tree of Life, Take Shelter, The Debt, AND Coriolanus into account).
---

Annnnnd done.  Here's to what should be an amazing 2012 in film!

Because NGamer asked for it, my... list of all movies I saw this year!  In order!

Just Go With It - 4/10 Such a forgettable comedy, I've forgotten everything about it.  Except that I was amused at the time

Source Code - 6/10 Entertaining, but didn't seem like such an original concept and seemed very short...

Bridesmaids - 8/10 One of the best comedies in a while, for sure!

Hangover 2 - 3/10 What a sellout

Mr Popper's Penguins - 6/10 I really liked Jim Carrey in this film.  Saw it with a 3 year old, which helped

Horrible Bosses - 7/10 A surprisingly good comedy.  Mutha Fucka!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - 5/10 Didn't read the books, only part that saved this was seeing it on an IMAX before it was released, and walking past the hoards of dressed up people waiting in line 8 hours before the showtime

Crazy Stupid Love - 8/10 I really enjoyed this movie a lot.  Love Steve Carell in this type of role

The Change-up - 4/10 I forgot why we even watched this, it really was such a copy of Freaky Friday I couldn't believe it

Final Destination 5 - 1/10 I can't remember if I actually saw this or not, it was so bad

Our Idiot Brother - 7/10 Good cast, well done

Contagion - 7/10 A bit overrated, but still really enjoyed the style of this film
