Hey guys. One of the things I'm most looking forward to at the Virginia Meet is potentially finding another player who can challenge me at GE 4 player. I have played all of the best players that Australia can offer but have yet to find someone who can play at my level.
I'm hoping to find another GE player out there that will provide a difficult match up for me. I have talked to a few of the guys going to the meet and for some reason they don't seem to be as competitive or enthusiastic about a 4 player match up as I seem to be. So I want to up the stakes and make things more interesting for them. I want to attempt to build some more competitive spirit.
Here is what I'm offering:
- 10 consecutive 4 player GE matches with 3 of the best GE players the US (or the world) has to offer
- Pistols, LTK, 20 score limit
- 1st - 3 points, 2nd - 2 points, 3rd - 1 point, 4th - 0 points
- The levels will be played in this order... Basement, Stack, Facility, Complex, Caves, Stack, Facility, Complex, Basement, Stack.
The person with the most points at the end of the 10 games wins US$250.
Now if I win the losers will not have to pay any money, the sheer joy of the competition will be enough for me. The 3 players can be nominated by everyone else and you can decide who will play in the show match. If anyone is interested in playing please post and comment below.

lol I'm in fo sho :v :v :v

You might have difficulty playing a PAL console in the US. I don't think you can even get a PAL picture on US TVs, so they play it using their computer's tuner card. It creates a delay, but at least it works.
NTSC in the US may have better frame rate than NTSC in Australia anyway.
-
If it can't be done on PAL that's fine, but we will have time to figure out the best way.
-
That's a very nice offer.
NTSC is slightly smoother I'm pretty sure, but there's not really much difference unfortunately.
To me it would be obvious Patrik should be in on this (if he can make it there) I don't know how good Eddie is at 4p but he can't be bad :P then there's Eise, if he wants in on this but someone might get left out with Clem also definitely in. In the end though I think you're in for some serious competition ;)
-
Might want to pick last 2 years winner/runner ups, they're the one who did good recently or add Sweden's meet to that and just take last year's.
Otherwise you'll get tons of challengers and won't have any good reason to just pick one more than the other :p
-
2 player is completely different to 4 player, so winning a 2 player tournament may not mean as much as you might think.
BTW, I will not be choosing the other 3 players. It is up to everyone else to decide who they think the 3 best players are :)
Remember, more than just cash is at stake here. This a chance for you all to take the cockiest person in elite history down a notch!
-
Patrik beat us on 4p 2007-2011 every god damn meeting (except 2010 when we didn't have a meeting) so yea :P
http://thengamer.com/GE/21-Multi/Patrik%20owning%20at%204%20player%20on%20swedish%20GE%20meet%202009.wmv (http://thengamer.com/GE/21-Multi/Patrik%20owning%20at%204%20player%20on%20swedish%20GE%20meet%202009.wmv)
The start of that game is pretty crappy but the ending is nuts.
I still wanna think the other meetings he wasn't that dominant though since it's pretty painful to watch that lol
I really hate 4p...
-
250 USD, that's like a third of my plane ticket, except it would be bold and go without much money, expect to win and go home without being broke in August with everything depending on four possible random FFA-matches. brb, encoding the 9 matches of 4-player games I have.
I would probably nominate Clemens, since we're always very close to each other in 4-player games, the few games we played in 2011.
-
I vote...
Karl
Eise
Patrik
Clemens
-
Karl got some solid balls
Patrik
Eddie
Clemmy
-
Patrik and clemens are lock ins
-
other than integrity, what's stopping karl's three opponents from colluding, giving free kills and splitting the $250 pot?
eddie and patrik are locks, not sure who the third would be. jimbo for entertainment?
-
If we're picking the best it'd be Me, Eddie and Patrik... final 3 from last year to show noob Karl what's up. I can play multiple people fine ;)
-
^ lolled irl
1v1 =/= 4p
Not sure why this is such a difficult concept to understand.
-
What's stopping K..'s three opponents from colluding, giving free kills and splitting the $250 pot? Me. If I see this happen I will remove the players and replace them with someone else.
My recommendation for choosing the players if there are more than 3 nominated: A few play in matches, pretty simple. But it's up to you guys like I said.
-
I wasn't comparing 1v1 to 4p Dave. Saying if he wants the best GE players it should be the top players from VA, not sure why that was so difficult to understand.
We've never done a 4p serious tourney before, so just because this is your "favorite" scenario doesn't mean you're god at it, I'm sure we're just as good running around and kill as you. It isn't hard to adjust to a different scenario, we wouldn't be the best if we couldn't perform this.
-
He he he... this seems like just one more thing to make everybody mad about.
With all the extra people, exactly when would this happen. I'm pretty sure that 1 v 1 matches would take precedence over this 4 player lolzfest. Aussies and Eise certainly want to see how they'd stack up against the Best of the West. I know 1 v 1 matches wouldn't count for anything, but they are a far higher priority for me personally than a 4 player sausage fest.
So on top of all of the Kart and 3 player tourny matches, I highly doubt that there would be sufficient time for a side tourney like this. The 1 v 1 matches that I'm suggesting could just be played at any time since it's not a tourney. But this just seems like a time waster.
Dave we know you're excited for 3 and 4 player, but this is getting ridic. You think that you sucked last year 1 v 1. If you did better last year (you got 5th, which is pretty good considering the talent), you probably wouldn't be so keen to try something different. I could be wrong.
Personally I don't care either way about this 4 player thing Karl wants to do. I wouldn't enjoy playing it at all, so I won't do it. If it could be worked out with the spare time, then cool. Seems like overkill though...
-
Fanny I'm pretty disapointed in you man.
You come into a topic to bash a 4 player show match with a cash prize that will take all of 1-1.5hrs total to complete when you were never even nominated to be involved in it. What the fuck is wrong with you?
-
this isn't so much a tourney as it is just casual 4p games one after another. just think of all the friendly matches we've played during downtime in the past.
collusion wouldn't actually happen, i'm sure, just wanted to cover all the bases lol. good luck to you, karl; the odds are against you :]
-
Wasn't really bashing anything. Just curious as to how you were planning out the logistics...
Trent's right though, there IS downtime for casual (aka intense) personal matches. But Karl, you're right, I won't be a part of this, so I really don't care much about it. :)
-
well to be fair 1v1 doesn't seem so different than 4P, less camping and more adjusting to other player's position not to get sneaked on but shooting accurately is the same I'd think! Plus I'm pretty sure Eddy, Adam, Woll, Jimbo and co played their fair share of 4P. Same with these Swedish meets.
So I'd still go with VAs competition since that is the highest level there was here and add some Swed so
Patrik is a must he did good at all of them pretty much,
Lovins won last 2 VAs? so he's a lock IMO.
then I'd pick Matis or Eise (Id go with Matis but I never saw Eise play so I can't tell)
Doing this will be more than 1h though since you WILL have to do play-ins if you don't want to draw a line and pick people yourself. Lovins, Matis, Clemens, Patrik, Eise at the very least might add Jimbo. Not sure what the play-ins will be as you want the best 4Ps so it has to be 4P matches!
I'd definitely watch some of it though if it isn't too scattered all over the place.
-
Seems like a couple of people are worried about choosing the top 3, so I've decided to create a set play in structure so there is no fighting between people.
PLAY IN STRUCTURE:
I need 8 players to be nominated by people as the best 4 player players. The 8 players will then be broken into 2 groups.
Group A - 2 games
Group B - 2 games
Same point structure as the show match, however ties will be seperated by kills. The winners of each group go through to the show match straight away. The losers are OUT. 2nd and 3rd then merge to create another group that will play 2 more games. Winner of the group goes through to the show match. The 2 levels will be BASEMENT and STACK.
Total games played for showmatch = 16. 16 games should take no more than 2.5 hrs to complete.
I would appreciate it if people nominated 8 players so I can tally and create the final 8.
-
BTW, the entire show match should ideally be done in ONE sitting. So do you guys think that 2.5 hours could be set aside for it? 5 of the players will only need to devote up to 30 mins. The final 3 will need to devote up to the full 2.5hrs. Is that asking too much? I don't know, I've never been to a meet.
-
Lol @ adding Jimbo. I spanked him last year. I also won a 3 player match against Eddie yesterday. We only played 3 games total though... :p
If the nomming is open to everyone (I know I wasn't "invited" according to Karl) then I'd pick:
Eddie
Patrik
Matis
Dave
I can't pick anyone I've never seen play, regardless of self praise.
-
Nominations are open to everyone. You can even vote for yourself. :)
Fanny, I really don't understand your attitude. This is me paying $250 for a good 4 player match for anyone that is interested. How about instead of giving snide remarks you just GTFO. Thanks.
-
Since fanny doesn't want to play, the 8 people I vote for are
Patrik
Lovins
Clemens
Eise
Matis
Trent
Boss
Jimbo
If any of those drop out, next up would be Zerg, Alex, OD/YE.
-
I'd pick the same as Jon.
-
Can I be nominated? I want $250. I'll start today.
-
Anyone may be nominated by anyone.
-
This is a complete troll-fest, no way Karl is going to pony up 250 bucks (jesus christ man!) to someone who can beat him in 4-player?! How is collusion not going to happen in some way?
There's no way I'm worthy of a vote in 4P, I know that. The best players by far are Patrik, Clemens, and Matis/Eddie (for 4P quadrant screens)... if we want Karl to come to America to lose his ass (I personally don't want to see this, but whatever)
-
FYI, the cash will be presented upon arrival and put in a safe place until the comp is decided.
-
Jons list looks good except since Jimbo doesn't seem up for it I would remove him.. could replace Trent too since I think it's been awhile since he was at his best?
Patrik
Lovins
Clemens
Eise
Matis
Trent
Boss
Jimbo
These others should be in for sure I think, I've seen 4p games with Bryan and he seems pretty good.
The remaining 2 I'm not sure but did people forget about Greg Woll?? Well I don't know if he's going but.. then there's Ryan Zerg Koch whos met up with Clem several times etc and how about Ryan Lockwood?
The bold green ones are my nominees anyway, not sure how to decide the remaining 2.
-
I can't pick anyone I've never seen play, regardless of self praise.
You've watched multi vids, surely?
-
"...no way Karl is going to pony up 250 bucks...". So true. He'd have to lose for that to happen.
-
I can't pick anyone I've never seen play, regardless of self praise.
You've watched multi vids, surely?
Not any 4P vids. Zero interest in them.
Again, Karl, sorry for the negative nancy attitude. I just really hate 4P. :P I really do hope that you all have fun and that this doesn't turn in to a real life brawl...
-
If it turned into a real life brawl, i'd be the best at that cause I own at smash bros (brawl)
-
Heh, this is an awesome idea. Props to you Karl, win or lose. And I think NG's list looks pretty good except for if Greg comes I would take him over Trent. The time set aside for this shouldn't be an issue at all if you're serious about it and besides you're playing for $250!
-
Adam, put up $250 vs me in Brawl this year. You'll see what a Jimbo/Diddy combo can do!
-
i'll be at my best if there's $250 on the line lmao ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE </kg>
also jimbo you won't take one brawl match from adam, that i can guarantee
-
If we're talking tournys we should do a team tourny ;)
Trent is absolutely right about the last comment, Jimbo we'll play a set and however many matches you like. If I win, you do the cinnamon challenge this year. If you win, well you think of something.
-
Just uploaded some old 4 player action from the Swedish Meeting 2007 if someone's interested: http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=855.msg371679#msg371679 (http://elite.speedrunwiki.com/forum/index.php?topic=855.msg371679#msg371679)
-
Fanny, thanks dude. I appreciate your last response.
Seems like we are starting to get an idea about who will be playing. If you have been nominated can you please post clarifying if you are either interested or not interested in playing. Just so people aren't voting for people who don't care.

Or paying me the money that you own me. :nesquik:
If you're serious (and if you won the prize), I'd probably not offer the rental car as transportation since I wouldn't be joining. Though I have a feeling you're only like 12% serious with that idea... :P
-
How about this :me , alex and boss all play karl and team up and split the money and pay you back. That way everyone wins. :nesquik:
-
As FB said, I won't actually have to pay any money because I will win. That's the beauty of it.
I've never been beaten and I never will be beaten. It's just science. If someone here was better than me at 4 player they would be defying the laws of physics. Einstein hypothesized in his Theory of Relativity that the maximum level of skill that could be attained in GE is equal to K.. J... This show match is just to prove that theory scientifically by demonstrating my ability to beat anyone over 10 games.
-
I think you're way too overconfident going into this four player match. Remember Karl, pride comes before the fall.
-
Adam, put up $250 vs me in Brawl this year. You'll see what a Jimbo/Diddy combo can do!

-
Larkin: I WANT to fall. That's why I'm paying the money for someone to beat me. I've never been beaten on these settings and I'm looking for someone to take me down. Yes I'm cocky, but is it cocky to say that gravity exists? Is it cocky to say that without air we will die? No. Because it's scientific fact. Just like it's a fact that i'm the best GE multiplayer in the world.
-
Really Karl, you're not going to win ha.
-
Adam, put up $250 vs me in Brawl this year. You'll see what a Jimbo/Diddy combo can do!
Can I sidebet on this, pleeeeeeeease?
I will front any amount of money you want. Assuming Matis takes the challenge and plays his hardest.
Name your price and I will bring it, up to $500. Tournament rules.
Unless, of course, you're just talking about a freeroll. In which case, forget it. ::)
---
Also, lol @ this topic... I basically don't see any way this bet is +EV. Even giving Karl a slight edge over all 3 other competitors (debatable), he can't be more than around 2.5 to 1 odds to win and he's offering even money.
There's also basically no way to avoid collusion. It might not be straight out "here, kill me 20 times", but it WILL be the case that, when there's a gunfight, people will try to kill Karl at all costs first. This is not legitimate 4p action here, this is 4p action with a goal in mind... make Karl lose as badly as possible. It's not even really collusion, it's just smart play given the parameters of the event. Why would a player go after someone who isn't Karl in a three-way gunfight, and then risk letting Karl get two kills out of it? If my opponent has 19 kills, Karl has 17, and I have 8, and I get in a gunfight with the 19 guy... why would I even want to get the kill? I'd rather just let him win, but I'll make it look good, by shooting a few times in random directions.
Anyway, if Karl is serious about this happening, he doesn't have to schedule anything... just find a TV, find your 3 people, put your $250 in cash on the table, and play. I guarantee people will stop what they're doing and come watch. I just don't see it being a happy ending at all. (Well, happy for Karl's bank account, I mean... someone else in the room will undoubtedly be happy)
-
Well whoever is in lead will be watched, if Clem would have like 17 points and Karl had 14 then I wouldn't wanna let Clem get away with it.
But yea to me 4p is a bit of a mess so who knows how this will go.
-
Someone videotape this if possible btw.. well some of it :P
-
I've never been beaten and I never will be beaten. It's just science. If someone here was better than me at 4 player they would be defying the laws of physics. Einstein hypothesized in his Theory of Relativity that the maximum level of skill that could be attained in GE is equal to Karl Jobst.

To clarify, there will be no splitting of the prize money. To even discuss collusion is, in my honest opninio, retarded. There will be only one winner, therefore team work will not be an issue. The players playing will also be highly competitive. I know that I would play and play to win because more than cash is at stake.
I have it on faith that each player will play honestly and to their best ability to win for themselves. I don't want this event to be spoiled anymore by talks of dishonest play. I believe that each of the 4 players will believe that they can win, why would they let themselves lose so someone else can get the money and the glory? It just would not happen in reality.
In response to Infil's last paragraph.. Why would I do this if I would not be happy with losing? This is not a gamble, it's a win/win for me. I'm not an idiot.
Furthermore, every sport has tournaments with cash prizes. It's not a big deal. Get over it and just enjoy it.
-
Actually, Infil, reading your post again it seems like you misunderstand the concept? The other players put up no money themselves. They are just playing for $250 that I will give one person if they come first. It's not a bet. I don't win any money. There are no odds. It's just a challenge with a prize.
I apologise if you did actually understand that :)
-
I truly admire your confidence, Karl ;D We need more people like that. Lets see if your words will be backen up ;D
-
Ignoring the GE multi talk here for now. Money and GE bring out the worst in me and the combination of the 2 will just ruin the meet for me. If I lose in a close match, I'll end up throwing the biggest hissy fit in the world and I can't tolerate the immediate trolling that will follow. If I were to win, I'd probably take whatever cash puts me at EVEN for trip expenses (gas, $100 entry fee, tolls) and do something stupid with the rest of it (such as put up the remaining 75 bucks or whatever in a Grenade Launchers freeroll).
Anyway, Matis, the only game I've really been playing the last few months is Brawl, so unless you're some god-tier player and I'm not aware of it, I'm not going to be the same pushover I was against Eddie last time we played!
Also Infil, I'd probably take you on in a straight bet, but we'll discuss this later!
-
Jimbo, I doubt you have actually played a competent tournament player in Brawl before. I've seen this before in SF dozens of times... some dude who beats his friends comes into the scene and thinks he can take on the city's best players, and we have to teach them very basic concepts about the high-level game that they've never seen before, and they never win a round out of 50 games. Matis will do stuff with the characters you don't even know exists. If you're actually giving me even money that you can beat Matis in a first to 5 set in Brawl, and Matis agrees to play his hardest and isn't terribly out of practice, I'll bet any amount you want.
As for Karl, yeah I understand the proposition. I also wouldn't want to see dishonest play, but the scenario I outlined isn't even really dishonest, per se. It's just smart long-term strategy that might even help YOU win later on. For example, say Karl is 1 game away from protecting his money and has 17 kills, player A hasn't won one game yet but has 19 kills, and I'm also 1 game away and only have 8 kills. I'm probably going to be okay sacrificing myself to player A so that he can prevent Karl from winning the tournament (whereas player A is unlikely to win long term), and then start another game fresh and try to win that, rather than seeing if I can come back from 10 kills down. Would you call this collusion or dishonest play? I would just call it smart strategy, even though it involves me running directly to player A and getting killed without putting up a fight.
The one thing you're right about is that, if you trust the players not to split the pot, there's not really any advantage for them to let someone else win the money just to prevent you from winning. So they're going to try hard to win, even if it means putting themselves in a position where you could win... except in certain situations like the one I listed above. But if the players can recognize those situations and take advantage of them, then that's fine. That type of thing could also apply to you, if we reversed the names in the above example.
-
Infil, the scenario you listed would work if we didn't have a point system. It's the total points that matter after 10 games. So if someone is losing to me they would not want to end the game immediately because I will gain a point advantage over them.
So, Jimbo is OUT. David, Lovins and Matis are LOCKED IN. Patrik and Eise are also LOCKED IN pending that they actually come to the meet. The remaining 3 places are still subject to votes and their own interest. From what I've heard it's only really the 5 players I listed that I actually interested in taking part.

I'd be in, I'm not very good though

Jimbo I'll be down for sure with Brawl, I haven't played in a while but I still go to tournies here and there. We can bet an even 100. Not make some crazy stakes... Like I said we'll play however many you like on certain stages, not retarded stages..official tourney stages. 8min 3 stocks per match.
Trust me i'll be playing my hardest infil ;)
-
If Jimbo isn't happy with losing only $100 to Matis, he can sidebet me for any additional amount he likes. But I'll let Matis have the first $100, since he's actually playing, lol.
Anyway, don't mean to super derail this topic.

I'm tempted to bet Jimbo straight up in brawl and I haven't played in years.
-
Jimbo claims to the best at literally everything he does. Hell, I've never played Brawl in my life and I'd be confident to play him.
-
i'll be at my best if there's $250 on the line lmao ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE </kg>
also jimbo you won't take one brawl match from adam, that i can guarantee
This sounds like a bet!
-
I never said I was going to beat anybody? I said I wasn't going to be a pushover, sheesh. I'm not THAT good, but I definitely want to play my fair share of it at the meet this year.

i'm always down for brawl jim, just come find me. i'd probably be a better match for you than adam (he's legitimately nationally known as one of the best with his character, pokemon trainer)

This whole topic depresses me.

WIWF, you should probably get your own life then and not base your happiness on what topics appear on the General Chat board.

Well I 'd rather have you gain a single point advantage on me than risk giving you 2 or 3 when I have close to 0 chance of gaining any points on anyone! But that wouldn't be collusion imo it's just part of the overall strategy. If Lovins is at 19 Karl at 17 Matis at 17 and Patrik at 8, Patrik will want one player to do better than the others in any scenario except first match. It's just normal play to me. Plus it might actually never happen that someone is so far behind with these kind of players (other than far behind Karl that is). Also splitting $250 3 ways or 2 ways is really cheap heh unfortunately there is no way to tell if they do later on or whatever. I don't think it would be an issue unless you're a real jackass and people really want you to lose $250 no matter what then letting someone else win when they are mathematically out of the race could happen. But yeah I don't think this will happen or just split the money so 1st get some 2nd get a little less and 3rd gets a bit, you could even add a $20 entry fee for a bigger pot and have 4th get back his $20 (or 3rd get $20 back and 4th lose $20 max)... of course that way you lose money out of $250 for sure but you'll likely lose less and still have a great match.
Also why are people against this? I mean it's just Karl giving people a chance to play and adding some money to it to spice things up, if you don't like it don't want to play then don't watch or don't play :p

Well I can guarantee that those playing in the match will be VERY competitive. You can't become the worlds best unless you are. Even if they (or I) are losing they will still try and beat the next person. No one will want to come last. As I said this is more than just about the money. Everyone in the match will be wanting to show that they are the best player.
As I previously said, every sport and most popular video games (starcraft, anyone?) hold tournaments with crash prizes. The Starcraft pro's can win $100K per tournament. To belittle the logic behind this topic is completely moronic. Besides, as PYL said, if you don't like it then you don't have to be a part of it. To express negetivity towards it openly in this topic only shows how self centered you are.

I update the first post with the levels that will be played and the order in which they will be played.

No Caves? Scared brah?

Fine, Matis, I will include caves for a match :)

I love this topic. I am the same way with Halo 1 for X-Box. Unbeatable. Period. The post about playing the cities best and showing him entry level high-end strategy hit the nail on the head. I had to do that all the time. Since I don't really play GE competitively I can only compare it from my competitive Halo 1 matches.
4 Player, to me, is in Karl's favor. Even against REALLY good players. The more players there are, the easier it becomes for uber Elitists.
Also, This colluding topic and all going for Karl instead of each other. Again this puts it in Karl's favor as well. I would rather have 3 people all going for me than a FFA.
There isn't really time in the game for players to try and kill each other over and over instead of going for Karl etc. If he cleans house like he claims, it just couldn't happen.
I know Halo 1 and GE aren't the same games etc but there has to be some similarities there.
Also, I am going to bring Halo 1 and if it gets played, awesome, if it doesn't, no biggie. I'm up for showing people some sweet stuff in that game.

There's one TV dedicated to my 360 that we've traditionally used for fighting games, Halo, and Live Arcade stuff. There should be no shortage of interest in some games of Halo here and there... you could also bring your 360 hard drive, generally 4-5 people do and we swap between them so that everyone has all their characters and maps loaded.
