(FFS FINALLY I COULD CREATE AN ACCOUNT, FUCKING SHIT)
Sup guys, greg k here. Made a new account, it seems like I lost my old one.
Anyway, I got all my n64 stuff back (was borrowed to some of my college friends) and <surprisingly> my controller is super wasted/warmed/fucked up. The analog sometimes get stuck at one point, so it's very annoying (and barely playable).
I'm looking for a "new" one here in Brazil but it's kinda hard to find. I found a few but I can't be sure if it's "close to brand new" or fucked up. Do you guys know where I can surely find a good one? Also, looks like it'll be hard to find someone on ebay or whatever who will ship all over to Brazil. How do you guys do on that situation (assuming not all of you find n64 controllers at your own country)?
Any help here will be useful :v

FOUR brand new #controllers I got about a month ago
HERE IS THE #SECRET TO WHAT I DID
1) Go to an online classified and search "nintendo 64 controller." In Canada we have one called kijiji.ca which is good. USA has craigslist.org. I imagine Brazil has a similar site.
2) Find a seller who has a LOT of n64 stuff. Not someone with 1 controller. Find someone with a LOT of goods. I'm talking 100s of games and dozens of controllers. This gives you the best chances that they will have good quality controllers. The guy I bought from said he buys massive lots constantly to collect, and selling the parts he doesn't want or need. You want someone like this.
3) Write this person a message, explaining that you are a high level n64 competitor, and there has been a resurgence of activity due to popularity of online streaming, etc. Explain to them that you need 1 or 2, possibly up to four GOOD QUALITY controllers with #fresh, #tight, #clean sticks like an 18 year old pussy. #mmmtasty Also explain to them that since you are a high level competitor, you would like to #MEET in person to look at their stock of controllers and assess for yourself which are the best.
4) Eventually someone will agree to these terms. Odds are the person you will be contacting is a #Nintendo nerd themselves and will think your gig is pretty cool. They will be excited to find someone who shares the #passion of Nintendo fandom and they will be open to meet with you.
5) Actually go meet up with this person, look at the controllers, and buy the best one (or four.)
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE NOW ACQUIRED A QUALITY NINTENDO 64 CONTROLLER.
-
Good job Goose, as always. Thanks. Already started doing that.
Wouldn't you sell me one of these four by any chance? :> I still trust any of you guys here more than anyone else in Brazil (apart from the other elite guys from here).
-
I paid $20 each for them. I don't want to sell them at all. I'd maybe consider selling my 3rd best for $200 but even then I probably wouldn't because I don't want to sell them. I'd need a price that is so completely ridiculous that I'd have no choice but to consider it ( like Django and Dr. King Schultz offer Calvin Candie for his 3rd best slave :nesquik: )
Fact of the matter is that N64 controllers in extremely good condition are rare, and once someone like me, who actually needs them and comes into possession of them, obtains them, you never want to let them go.
I understand you trust fellow eliters more, but I doubt any of us will sell. Just meet with someone in person and give them cash. Keep in mind that if your current controller WORKS, then all you need is a good, tight stick. So even if someone screws you over and sells you a non functioning controller with a perfect stick, the perfect stick is all you need (to then transplant in your current controller.) And besides, I really doubt that will happen.
Lol @ excluding irrelbrasil eliters from the trusted people list.
-
Okay :v Makes sense.
I also thought maybe someone here would know someone else (non eliter) who would sell good n64 controllers, and then send them to me etc. I still would trust more in that.
Already made a post at a online classified over here (famous gaming boards). I think it will work.
What the fuck is irrelbrasil?
-
irrelbrasil is a term I invented to collectively refer to irrelevant Brazilian eliters, such as;
chuck rox
Laercio Rodolfo
Guillherme Alberto
Jose ZEZINHO Tavares
Leonardo Santos
etc, I'm sure you can come up with a more comprehensive list.
Pretty much anyone who isn't Vitor, Narigutita, Dark Slayer, etc. The ones that just post irrel GE/PD times on the boards and don't do anything else.
-
You should read that again Mr Goose, he excluded brazilian eliters from the untrusted rest of brazil and not from trusted eliters :-*
-
On second read, the language appears ambiguous. Are the Brazilian eliters separated from the trustworthy eliters? Or are they separated from the non trustworthy Brazilian non eliters?
It's irrel anyways. Just like irrelbrasil.
-
True, can't really tell from his text only (https://forums.the-elite.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftwitchtvfaces.com%2Fimages%2FKappa.png&hash=17a49619750c5c77960f8bf53f4329786773816a)
My interpretation is more probable though.
-
What I said was that I would only trust 100% on those who played or still play N64 competitively (including the irrelbrasil, lol at that term), whether I know the guy in real life or not. I still get a little "apprehensive" doing business with a random people from an online gaming forum, EVEN if I get the chance to hold the controller in hands. There are more scoundrels (or whatever you call that) in Brazil than anywhere else in the world.
Yeah my irrelbrasil list would be a little different, for that matter. Chuck still used to post some stuff apart from PRs (same as Dark Slayer which you put in your "relbrasil" list), but I agree with the others - and would add preety much everyone else that I know. Sadly the brazilian players were too lazy to learn English back then :v Don't know how they're doing today though.
-
Good to see you back gregorio :)
-
:nesquik: :nesquik:
Victor Lima is sending me one of his good controllers (until I buy a new one). Hurray!
-
I'll lend you the best joystick that I have and keep the others for me, since I'm going to play just for fun. I don't play Nintendo 64 or any other game since a long time, the only game I have been playing is Avengers Alliance on Facebook, so I think it's going to be cool to join The-elite again.
But I need some help; I don't remember the registered e-mail from my account. So if any moderator can help me change the email, please contact me by PM. This is my old profile: http://rankings.the-elite.net/~Knuckles
If possible, I would like to change my e-mail and nickname and reset my old times.
-
You can just get your account activated by contacting either ngamer or jimbo (I just sent a pm to ngamer on facebook and had my stuff activated in like, 5 mins) it's really simple and the new ranking is pretty sweet ( not sure if it's new, but it is according to me :v ).
P.S: WTB n64 controllers, mine are in such bad conditions -_-
-
Yeah, YE contacted Victor, so I guess it's ok now.
The rankings are awesome indeed :P That's one of the main things that motivated me to get my stuff back and play.

I've done quite a bit of scouting around and thinking about this. One would think there would be at least a niche market for high-quality stick replacements.
Sanni over at Zetaboards has done a good bit of research, including re-programming the chip coming with the GC-style stick (Hori) and even wiring in/programming chips to make a PS2 or actual GameCube stick work in the N64 controller. Lodgenet also had an official Nintendo controller with a pseudo-GC-style stick that was superior to the original that worked in hotel rooms. It does require some dremel/soldering to integrate it into a N64 Controller.
The stick wears out because the knob of the stick sits inside a plastic bowl. After a while of plastic grinding against plastic, the bowl becomes deeper and of course you see the white powder.
I'm experimenting with coating that bowl with some hard substance (paint, fingernail polish, something), or finding some thin metal bowl replacement that could be glued down. This would prevent the bowl from wearing out but the stick would still wear eventually (but presumably at a slower rate).
So here's the options I know of:
Original N64 stick
hard to come by in good condition, we all know this.
OEM replacement
nearly identical to original, indications are that it wears out faster due to softer plastic
Potentiometer replacement
Looks like original but doesn't have the range or precision of original, but worst of all has a larger "dead zone" so you have to push the stick further in any direction before it begins moving.
GC-style replacement
Feels great, good quality, but skips which makes things like aiming on GE very difficult, smashing in Smash Bros near impossible, and can't do spin-attacks in Zelda. For racing and platformers it's generally good.
Lodgenet stick
These are going to be hard to come by and they will wear out as well, just at a slower rate. One has to be willing to use a dremel and soldering iron to get it to work.
GameCube/PS2 stick
This seems like a nice options but requires a PIC and a programmer and some soldering. Probably the most expensive for an individual to set up as it requires a chip, a programmer, GC or PS2 controller to destroy, and a N64 controller.
So the cheapest solution right now seems to be the OEM-style stick, which is available on Ebay for $8.49 (free shipping) as of this moment. It is strongly suggested that grease be put in the bowl of the stick to lubricate and alleviate the damage which will inevitably be done. In fact, I think it's a good idea to grease your regular controllers. They aren't hard to open up and do that and could extend the life by a good bit if it's not directly plastic-on-plastic wear.
Anyway, here are the OEM-style sticks, which are as close to the originals as anything out there right now. Oh, apparently the springs are weak so just use the original Nintendo spring instead of the one provided here.

Wow, awesome. Thanks. Someone should stick your post as a topic or something. The OEM replacement indeed sounds like a good and cheap idea (specially if I can buy a pack of them cheaper). I've found another friend who comes to the place I live once in a while and he said he's got a couple of controllers in nice conditions, so I guess I'm all set for now. But that's a really good option.
About original N64 controller wearing off, most of you guys probably have seen this, but Ghus Dark (one of the old school brazilian pd players, he's the one who found out the skedar jump!) is really good at fixing the analog. His video is quite famous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX9sF-xuXhI . All you need is another wasted controller (so you use the plastic from it) and some tools. I asked him if he could fix the controllers for me but he said he's not in the mood now haha.

This sounds good:

That's a helpful video. Perhaps I was mistaken as to what was the primary contributor to it wearing out: the black cross piece, since that's all he worked on. I wonder how long that fix lasts or if one could do something similar with epoxy.
-
Well, he fixed my controller in 2006-2007. And it started to wear out badly at like 2011 or so, but I didn't play as much as I did before, obviously (still played a good ammount of time, actually, including some PD and GE sporadically). It lasted preety well, if you ask me, considering that's the controller I have since like... 2003 or 2004. Ghus fixed a lot of controllers to us (the brazilian players), and I don't remember any of them not being fixed correctly and such, so it's a preety good solution.
My SOS A 1:37 was achieved not so long after he fixed the stick, and I remember it was very very smoothly as I was very consistent on the strafing. The stick feels awesome after the fix, because it's a little warmed up, so it's like perfect to speedrun.

Has anyone seen this video? I actually tried that method but it didn't work too good for me lol. I have had pretty good success with Illu's string method though. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz1sDW8f6sQ)
