Title: ***OFFICIAL*** Best Version by Level Topic
Post by: RWG on February 13, 2013, 10:38:34 am
This topic has been talked about for a long time.  Use this as a reference to learn which version you should be using for each level.  Other top players feel free to chime in and direct me here.

In general, these are the differences in versions:

NTSC-EN (EN) - Least laggy, bad auto aim, average guard accuracy
NTSC-JP (JP) - Laggier than EN, amazing auto aim, vicious guard accuracy
PAL (PAL) - Laggiest, like NTSC with lag and slow doors, claimed lower guard accuracy

So going level by level, here are the best versions to use and the reasons for them.

Dam

A - EN - Least laggy
SA - EN - Least laggy
00A - EN - Least laggy and less aggressive guards than JP, more likely to survive.  The auto aim is tough to deal with on 00A EN and JP helps a lot in that regard.  You will die more on JP for sure, though it may be easier for you to complete with the better auto aim.

Facility

A - EN - Least laggy, though I got 45 on JP with worse sounding music than some low 46s on EN.  There may be something to that.
SA - EN/JP - Interchangable, slightly less lag on EN but again, and slightly better auto aim on JP.  Again, Facility seems unknown.
00A - JP - The auto aim on the first guard alone makes JP worth it here.

Runway

A - EN - Least lag
SA - EN same
00A - EN same

Surface 1

A - EN - Least lag
SA - EN same
00A - EN same, though JP has not really been looked into on these levels.  The lag difference is very noticeable, but boosts might be easier to get.

This topic is a work in progress.  I will edit and finish.   :kappa:

Dam 00a might be easier for noobs on PAL. I remember Eise having a difficult time surviving the level on NTSC so he played it on PAL.

Yup if you want to compare pal and ntsc for dam 00a for instance, you also have to consider to compare average players with more advanced players. Generally PAL will be easier to get a decent time, but for 155/156, ntsc is easily the best system (Possibly 157 as well) JAP is easily my least favorited on dam 00a, but for players whose aiming skills isn't the strongest, JAP can be a good system to play on. It's all preference depending on your skill level.

Yeah - I'm in favour of NTSC Dam 00 Agent, where you can injure the guards slightly faster than PAL I think - I've played on both, it's just slightly easier to survive on PALbut shooting with the PP7 is laggier on PAL. Don't know about JAP on Dam, I'll see in a few weeks.

For your Surface 1 boost referention and maybe other levels - are the guards more accurate on JAP?

Good topic you started! I assume you can't test PAL :nesquik:

Marc said on twitch that Caverns is the only triple version level with A->NTSC, SA->PAL, 00A->JAP. The reasons for PAL on SA were AR33 shooting speed and that JAP auto aim screws very fast B areas IIRC.

Silo 00A is NTSC-US for sure for top players, JAP for noobs

Surface 2 Agent 0:48 is far harder / impossible on PAL I thought

There are more reasons for Cavs sa being PAL advantaged than the AR33 shooting slightly faster in B area, the guards are slightly more passive on PAL as we already know (A few of the stats probably lowered a bit), so the boost ratio from B area till the end are much more balanced on PAL thus making 119 cake as fuck.

Now NTSC definitely runs smoother when it comes to agent (and add the extra consistency of boosts due to stats being a bit more pumped) it would seem weird that PAL would be smoother on SA, but it is and it's not really a mystery to me. The systems works completely different, first of all, other than slightly faster AR33, PAL tends to handle lag better than ntsc when it potentially can get really ugly. On SA you are blowing shit loads of stuff up and using time mines, this lags less on PAL, or at least it is just smoother to play with those circumstances on PAL. When you just get down to minor lag, ntsc is the smoother system. Second of all, all the looking angle difference from A/SA makes NTSC/PAL different to judge depending on the area. You can't judge a system single handely on the level like most elite spectators and players probably would do, each area and each room actually have an unique feeling in the comparison of NTSC/PAL. That is just one of the reasons why i could write a thick book on PAL/NTSC differences, they might be minor differences, but there's a lot of them.

About PAL handling high lag better, that might explain why Train, Jungle and the black room on Aztec (Loads of computer screens around the room doesn't really help reducing the lag) is miles better on PAL. Henrik and Miika talked a little about that sometime before iirc.

And the superpad ofc Clemens kindly mentioned, a 3rd. party controller being advantaged on every single stage (+ 2.x) which Ace now have used to it's full ugly potential to destroy the elite forever  :nesquik: Long live the elite.

I'm going to complete the OP with every level and full explanations.  I will obviously write what I just wrote about Silo 00A.  The thing is, if you're a noob top 200 player, you probably don't need to get all versions.  The versions are most significant when you get in the top 8.

Anyways, like I said the OP will be complete eventually, but you got tired after 3.5 levels so you can see it's not the most fun thing to write out.

Surface 2 Agent 0:48 is far harder / impossible on PAL I thought

Opinions on this would be appreciated, preferable from multiversion experts Ace/Henning/Marc.

While we are at it, is there any rule of thumb on when to prime the SA WR grenade throw? Tried it with cheats and failed.
