Title: HORRIBLE; TRAGIC NEWS (My DVD recorder just broke)
Post by: RWG on February 18, 2013, 03:33:36 am
Yeah, my DVD recorder is broken.

Or at least it seems that way.  Most of us know DVD recorders break after a few years due to planned obsolescence.  I think I've had this one since '09, while my first one only lasted about summer '07 - early '09, so it did a fair job.

As of right now, it's not completely broken, but it takes a very long time to finalize discs and I just don't feel comfortable using it to record PRs since it's bound to fully break any moment now.

This is a problem because we all know I have the best video quality in the entire elite using my DVD recorder.  I really can't play (much) without it.

Due to the fact that I am currently unemployed and low on cash, I can't really afford a $150 luxury expense.  The next time I will be able to afford to buy a new DVD recorder will be when I get a new job (could be soon but unlikely,) receive a significant tax refund (within a month,) or start my summer job again (May-June; but wouldn't play much until October because it would be summer.)  I will probably be completely out of commission until then.

This really sucks because I was actually getting good at Goldeneye again

The other options are;

- Play while recording to my harddrive, but I don't like this option because every time I've tried this, it wouldn't record in game sound (or even mic'd TV sound) and I don't feel confident putting my whole confidence into this recording method.

- Stream, but only once my internet gets fixed.  This is also inconsistent because the stream can cut out easily, and I don't like having PR videos which are only live videos.  I want the DVD capture as well.  If I did this, I'd likely only do full game runs, Perfect Dark PA runs ( :kappa: ) and other games like OOT maybe.

So in conclusion there is a very realistic chance I might not be playing Goldeneye again until October; and that really sucks.

In the meantime I will be searching for the ultimate truth.

- Figure out how to robustly record to your HD with sound.

Burning DVDs is so 2004.

Might as well enjoy the balancing downside period before the good period, make the two one.

Goose, if your computer has a microphone jack, you can get a RCA to 3.5mm cable and use it to basically play the in-game audio through your microphone. You can then select the microphone (line-in) as the audio device in whatever direct capture program you're using. This is what I do when I direct capture using Virtual Dub.

The cable itself is cheap:

Oh yeah DK, thanks for reminding me.  Your capture card actually has a 3.5mm output, so I can do 3.5mm from CC to 3.5mm in computer and this should work perfectly.

I have loads of those cords for playing music in vehicles and whatnot.

This may be a solution.

Goose, are you 100% certain it's the DVD recorder that is broken and not the disc that is becoming bad?  Way back when I first got my DVD recorder it eventually stopped working correctly and I even called the manufacturer and explained the problem and they told me it was broken as well.  But when I exchanged it and brought the new one home the problem was not fixed!  This was when I realized that the disc had to be the problem and putting in a new disc completely fixed it.  Since then I've had other discs become bad but the DVD recorder itself still works fine.  So yeah, just making sure.

In all honesty, this topic was just an attempt to get antibieber really mad.  I was hoping he would make a post like "YOU ARE SO FULL OF YOURSELF, YOU CAN'T PLAY FOR A DAY AND YOU MAKE A WHOLE TOPIC ABOUT IT."  The topic is obviously troll and intended to annoy my haters.  I could simply have posted this in the WR discussion thread, but instead I wanted to get my haters MAD.

Anyways, yeah Jimmy that is very possible.  Axel reminded me of this possibility last night.  The discs I'm using are at least as old as the DVD recorder, from like 2009.  I had 5 DVD+RWs and 25ish DVD-RWs.  The +RWs all eventually broke (got a "ERROR: CAN NOT RECORD TO THIS DISC" message) and then with the -RWs it just takes forever to finalize.

Buying new discs may be a much more frugal solution to this problem.

Probably for being an obviously fake account that had no humorous purpose and only served to degrade, bully and upset members of the community?

Anyways, I bought these discs

http://www.amazon.ca/Verbatim-94834-ReWritable-30-Disc-Spindle/dp/B0002IQ162/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361267811&sr=8-1

So hopefully this solves the problem

Well, I suppose you would know :P

I'm genuinely asking so that the offense won't be repeated.

Making fake accounts isn't exactly allowed.  When they're funny like Sniper Patrol or jbrcolombia and they don't interfere with anything or anyone in the elite, it's usually OK.  If they keep mostly to FFA and don't screw around, it's OK.

But when people make fake accounts so they can hide behind them while trolling, flaming and offending other eliters while serving no other purpose... yeah that's not exactly OK.

If you seriously can't tell why antibieber should be banned then you should probably be banned too.

If that's the case, I was wondering why you hadn't been suspended... since you seem to have the most inflammatory posts in any given thread.

Aside from Karl, but I <3 Karl. :)

It probably has something to do with me being a real person and a competitor at the games which the elite was created for, as well as having just as many friends here as haters, as well as being one of the people who does the most for the community.

If I didn't compete at either games, did nothing for the community and had no friends, THEN my inflammatory posts would be a problem.  This isn't rocket science.

I don't know why you hate me either.  I always thought you were a reasonable guy.

I'm not trying to start a war here, but as I said in my PM, I don't hate you and I think Proverbs 27:6 sums this up:
"Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy."

Yet you love those who flatter you and hate those who point out any faults. I have faults, I hope that if someone pointed out ones I wasn't aware of, I would be man enough to try to fix them.

Though I wouldn't call myself a friend, I want you to consider that some people are trying to inform you, for your own good, that you are a bit egotistical. The problem is that you don't even consider any form of criticism, constructive or otherwise, but immediately lash out and call people "haters". What if, just what if, it's true that you sometimes act hypocritical and self-centered and bully those you disagree with?

Maybe I'm incorrect and everyone loves you and think you're the best thing that has ever happened to the-elite. But please don't just discount any form of critique of your attitude.

And it's so damn true.

Thanks to Jimmy and Axel for telling me what's GOOD.

This thread hereby is concluded.

Wait, so all you needed was to buy new discs.
And you started a topic about it?....

Hey guys! My life is over! My wireless controller is out of batteries and it's horribly tragic! There's nothing that can be done!

He did not know that new discs would fix the issue prior to making this topic. Of course it would have been more sensible to just say it's broken and ask for solutions. Nothing really wrong with what Goose did.

Marc is right. Streaming is good for the spectator, but people really dont realize how brutal it can be for the person playing. The fun only lasts a little while, and then it's mostly just obsessive compulsiveness that keeps us playing for better.

If (being fulfilled by) life is a obsessive compulsion, then yes :D Putting on clothes and brushing your teeth every day must be obsessive compulsion as well. Failing must indeed be the ultimate obsessive compulsion Durk has  :kappa:
