"The Dream Is Over" - John Lennon 'God'
Just over 3 months ago, on the 24th of November 2012 I went down to the local Cash Converters to purchase an AV cable for my house mates old N64 (I had been watching Marc and Ryan stream for a couple of weeks and caught the Twitch bug). To my surprise the sucker still worked and in an instant, Goldeneye 007 was again back in my life. After posting a photo of my new setup on facebook, both Marc and Ryan instantly told me that if I seriously wanted to improve my times I should get a CRT TV, and so next week I found myself lugging a heavy as fuck $10 Panasonic all the way home from Brunswick in the sun (it took 5 hours). The last time I had played the game seriously was back in 2009 when I got Depot SA 0:43 on mid-year holiday. Shortly after getting this time I began having panic attacks - to put it simply, I basically had a nervous breakdown and had to take a year off Uni to sort my life out. So I didn't play Goldeneye seriously for 3 years.
Some of you will know that 3 months ago I was ranked about 75th for points with about 2000 points. In that time I've managed to exceed my own expectations by a huge margin. I didn't realise how much of the game I had been missing out on due to my immaturity back in 06, or unwillingness to try out new levels and strategies. Somehow coming back to the game after 3 years made 1.2 feel more natural, my brain had finally completely discarded 1.1.
Streaming in general has been what drew me back to Goldeneye and I want to mention a few people:
Marc - for your hilarious commentary and extreme focus / attention to detail and passion for the game.
Ryan W. - your streams have a magical quality - your determination and drive to constantly exceed your limit, as well as engaging with your audience. thanks
Rayan - from my earliest memories of watching you play Jungle Agent for 0:50 I along with others, would tell we were watching something special. Also thanks for your constant feedback / help you've given me.
Jim - you are a very talented and entertaining player, don't let anyone get you down, now go get that runway 0:22!
Alex A. - again congrats on your AGDQ run, it was amazing to see Goldeneye represented by such a great player. Respect also for going for pr's that represent a personal challenge for you, not simply a point gain.
Clemens - very entertaining player with amazing talent, and it's great to see perfect dark and SM as well. please get a capture card soon though, your stream Deserves it.
Wouter - it's great to see you going for pr's / World Records / learning 1.2. you are very engaged with chat but like Rayan should consider using a mic!
Illu - a true legend, have you taken a break from the game? thanks for the help you have given.
Jimmy - awesome player, I saw you struggling with Train and Caverns live and your persistence is inspiring.
Eise - we picked Goldeneye back up around the same time and I consider you one of my rivals, thanks for helping me out and racing me.
Nick - it's great to see you keep improving your times and make the top 50! never give up on WR's.
Cara - hugely entertaining, I loved watching you pr on MBR and attempt playing Goldeneye.
Frank - best emu player :kappa: your streams are always fun and watching you improve at Goldeneye as fast as you did was impressive. I remember getting Frigate 0:25 while on skype with you, and you set a PB that night as well. good times.
Karl - terrific player, raw skill, you should consider using a mic though. If you keep playing you'll keep pushing me to play.
Lockwood - you're return has been impressive, silo a 1:03 and solid statue times, keep it up and you can go really far.
Phil - you have been one of the best additions to this community, here's hoping that you'll keep at it, and finally get those splitters!!
Suprioten - keep getting pr's and soon you'll be getting wr's
I think that's everyone I wanted to mention. Thanks also to Frank (Softman) for organising the-elite podcast and inviting me on.
About my semi-retirement; I'm going back to Uni in a couple of days, maybe even tomorrow and so I will be putting Goldeneye away for a while. I'll probably be able to play one day a week on weekends, and may use this time to stream. I want to keep my skills up at least, so that during the mid-year break I will have time to climb the ranks again.
Some things that have happened recently on the boards have been tilting me out. My control A 4:01 was a horrible video, yes, and this was why I held back from posting it for so long. The back roll surprised me, it probably shouldn't have but it still did. The next day there were discussions about creating a new ranking system, something which got more and more absurd as the day progressed, and basically forced me to post times to fill in my N/A's. Sorry if you found this offensive but it was something I wanted to comment on anyway. Wouter, Axel, I respect you guys a great deal and consider our relationship to be good, but when you constantly say things like "when are you going to fill in your N/A's", "i hate players having N/A's", "will a new ranking system motivate you to get rid of your N/A's". I start getting annoyed. Goldeneye is a process. If I wanted a full set of shit times I could do that in 1 hour, but I would rather show some self respect and reach my current potential on levels I know how to play. And freezing my time page... Really? At least it was appropriately timed :nesquik:

Damn, two of my favorite players are on a hiatus. Really sad to see you play less. You were one of the most entertaining players and your rise up the ranks was incredible. I was not expecting you to get into the top 30 so quick. I still remember the day you got into the top 50, it was awesome. I hope the best for you and your studies and hopefully on your next break, you get into that top 20!

I'll leave that here, live the dream man.

I appreciate the kind words Luke, and I hope to see you in my twitch chat when I start playing again next week or so :)

Sweet that you mention me :) Top 100 feels like a reasonable goal right now, so that should keep me motivated ^^
Good luck with your studies!

best emu player :kappa:

Bah, I've got the same uni blues. I'm doing the same 1-day a week of gaming thing. But still, all the best broseph!

ok good luck with stuff Luke
I played GE forawhile when it was still easy to keep Goose behind me, but now that's he's pulled away pretty clear I just play whatever, and lately it has been some PD and Mario 64. I also like to get away from playing only individual levels from time to time but yea I might just jump back to GE when you least expect it too, also busy with getting ready for beach 2013 8) and some other personal stuff so I guess I've just played less overall now too.

All best with Uni, Luke. I enjoyed participating on your stream a while back and wish I could have continued. You're very engaged with your viewers and available to answer questions or comment on your run as you go. Your runs were what inspired me to get a few PRs myself... then I went back to Xenoblade Chronicles :D

I currently also play about 1 day per week on average.
I don't know what you mean in your last paragraph. I don't hate players with N/A. That would make me hate every newcomer lol (which I don't). I was speaking in general, not directing anything towards you personally. I simply saw Lockwood with 24 N/As being 56th and I called top 50 crap and we've discussed that for a bit then. I tried to encourage you to work on N/As as well, and I may have asked when will you do so, but there was no expectation that you must do so. It was interest in your rise and skill. It was rather meant as a compliment than anything else. I support your GE process. I do not support posting fake times. You undermine your own credibility and integrity by doing that. You definitely are free to have your opinion and make a stand for it, like you have done here in this topic. You could also have voiced your opinion in the topic where it was being discussed instead of a revenge action to something that did not happen (like mentioned several times, the ranks aren't being replaced with a new system, but rather supplemented with one (if it comes through). Action being taken in response to yours is necessary.
I would like to finish off by saying I'd love to race you when our 1 day of the week happens to coincide :)

I agree with everything Wouter said.
I don't know you well, Luke, but you seem like an awesome guy and I hope to see you around.

getting ready for beach 2013 8)
;D
Good luck with life, Luke, you're a very talented GE player :)
-
I'm sorry Luke if I annoyed you with my nagging over N/A's, it was never my intention to offend you personally. Like Wouter, I hoped it would encourage you to play your N/A levels. I'm sorry if I went a bit over the top, but I was simply speaking in general and from a subjective perspective. It's no secret that I think N/As look ugly on the ranks (especially on long-time members like yourself), but I'd rather see you have your N/As than posting a bunch of fake times. You achieved nothing constructive by doing so. I don't expect you to agree with me on every topic but hopefully it makes sense.
anyway, hope to see you around and good luck with Uni and life :)
