Kinda new here and only picked up (PAL) Goldeneye again a fortnight ago after a decade+ long hiatus. Back in the day I thought I was a master, but holy crap you guys are fast ;D I've just entered all of my current best times for Agent runs, racking up an amazing 0 points in the process, and found that my total time (36 min 28 secs) is over 17 minutes slower than the total best time clocked up here :D
I've found a few levels (from watching all of your videos) where I can shave off a few minutes combined (Aztec, Control, Frigate, Train) but I'm guessing it'll be a few months before I even score 1 point here - thinking of jumping ship and trying Perfect Dark instead as I've already 100% finished Goldeneye anyway 8)
Just wanted to say hi really, and thanks for the videos and strats everyone has posted here. I'm recording as I play so I'll try to post up some videos soon and hopefully I can get some pointers to improve my times here and there.
For anyone interested, here's my current stats:-
Highest ranked level: Bunker 1, 0:21, 246th
Honourable mention: Jungle, 2:28, 298th (my least favourite level, and I'm guessing many others least favourite too)
Everything else, I'm outside the top 300 lol.

Welcome :)

Hey guy

Hello and welcome to the-elite Will! :)
Do you use 1.1 or 1.2? If the former, I'd suggest you change to 1.2 asap if you do want to score points since 1.2 will probably increase your chances (the majority of all top players use 1.2). And you won't get any sour thumbs :kappa: Of course, you can still achieve good times with 1.1.
The best levels to play when you're new at speedrunning the game are probably Facility and Archives since you utilize most of the techniques (opening doors, tight strafing, backswitch weapons etc) on those. Of course, all levels are good for practice but I think the ones I just mentioned stand out in particular.
Awesome that you already are willing to record your gameplay despite being a new and lowly ranked player. Now, times worth 0 points do not really require videos but the earlier you make videos the better, at least historically-wise (I regret not saving more taped runs when I was new here so that I could look at all my first submitted times today). Also, you'll be pretty much guaranteed not to be a victim of proof issues at a later stage.
I think the reason your Jungle time is ranked comparatively high is because that level is underplayed and yeah, my guess is also that it's one of the least popular levels in the game. Jungle is also one of the few levels (along with Train and Aztec) that is easier to play on PAL (less lag in general). All the remaining levels are slightly NTSC or JAP advantaged. Considering there are more NTSC than PAL players on the rankings, it's no real surprise, to me at least, that your Jungle time is one of your best. Jungle happens to be one of my favorite levels btw :kappa:
see ya around :)

Welcome :)
Says it all. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Glad to have you aboard!

Welcome Will!
I moved this topic to the appropriate forum where you might be able to get more pointers. A lot of our newer players have gotten pretty good by streaming their gameplay on twitch and getting lessons from veterans, so that might be a great idea for you if you're capable.

You'd be surprised how quickly you can get points once you've played some, man. Welcome to the-elite :)
-
Welcome! Bunker 0:21 is not far off from a time worth some points. With some practice, you can definitely get 18.
You should be playing levels that improve your skills though like Silo, Surface 1, etc. etc.
I hope you have a pleasant stay here.

hey Will, watch all of Marc and Ace's videos before playing again. Have fun playing GE! welcome

Hello :)

Welcome to the elite, Will. Have a nice PRing here ;).

Cheers for all the nice welcomes everyone :) Managed to shave a few seconds off some times earlier but still sat on 0 points ;D

Thanks for the tip, but I tried 1.2 earlier today and it just feels so wrong :-\ I wasted my childhood years memorising Goldeneye and Perfect Dark using 1.1, and when I tried 1.2 I was struggling to get out of the Facility bathroom :D Kept looking at the roof and floor when trying to move forward lol. Will try again tomorrow but it'll be difficult to change the habit of a lifetime ;)

That's precisely what I thought myself when switching control style, but somehow I promised myself not to play 1.1 ever again. Yes, it is very hard in the beginning, but within just a few weeks you'll get used to it ;)

Edit: You can disregard the below as I just now found all of the strats are posted on speedrunwiki.com lol. Videos would still be cool but given how detailed the wiki strats appear probably take bloody hours to show a single levels strat.
---
I was on twitch earlier and swompz showed me how to do the tracker bug throw on frigate from the top of the stairs (thanks again swompz) and it got me thinking.
A lot to ask but would any eliters be interested in recording commentaries on their videos to explain a strat in finer detail for other noobs? eg. on frigate slow down the video at the tracker throw to show and explain the runup needed, the angle to throw, the fact it needs to be in line of sight, and if you go down the stairs you've gone too far etc. On Aztec explain the guard opening door trick, on Facility the mine boosts, and how not to kill Trev when blowing up the gas tanks etc, on Control how to do the mine throw in the drone room, when and why Natalya is shot, the glass warp etc.
I could download each video and slow it down myself, but if a video from each level was slowed down at key points with the basic strat explained as commentary it'd be easier for noobs like me than having to crawl through page after page of forum topics, and it'd be cool to watch - like a documentary "How to speedrun Goldeneye" ;D Cheers

hey orkneywill, the exact thing you are explaining / asking for is something that's been on my mind for a few weeks now... just been too busy to properly think about it.
My intuition tells me that a 3 or so part video explaining the essential basic techniques, good beginner levels and tricks like tracker bug throw, aztec glass etc, could really help new players out. Then the more I think about it the more I feel it might just be a waste of time, but what the hell, I might put this together this weekend. what do you think?
-
Meh I saw Will's post and thought to myself that it would take me 3-4 nights of streaming 3-4 hours each night just to cover everything "basic" about GE speedrunning.
Perhaps my version is the David Attenborough BBC version still. You have to explain everything + explain why you do it for the WR strat + explain all the things that can go wrong + offer some beginner strats and explain those.
Doing this alone for Bunker 1 would produce a 2 hour long motion picture.
Some levels are simpler though... like Surface 1.
-
If you keep it ultra basic...it could work.
The problem is (as Goose pointedly pointed out) is length.
But still...interesting concept at the very least.

I like the idea of an essential basics video, these are what I can think of which should be covered (based on what I looked for & reading Youtube comments etc):-
Speed strafing
Back-cycle weapons
Quick-detonate remote mines
Mid-air nade explosions (hold Z for 'x' seconds and release)
Door warping/quick level exits
The dot
Lookdown
Cruise Control
Introduction to other controller setups (1.2, 2.4 etc)
Obviously not a complete list, but it's a start covering most of the stuff needed on more than one level, maybe I've missed some things too? Then theres level specific stuff like tracker bug, aztec glass etc but that list could be huge :-\

I can see how this could easily be longer than all Bond movies combined :D I doubt anyone watching these will be going for WR's anytime soon though so wasn't expecting that much detail. Was thinking more along the lines of making a video to promote the-elite and which might get more folk interested to try speedrunning. If the videos focused on Agent-only it'd be more noob friendly too.
If no-one has the time though I can appreciate that. Was just an idea and as I say I've now found the written strats and can follow those 8)

orkneywill, i like your style
the suggestions for a beginner guide sound really good and i would love to hear and see a video although as it has already been said, it would be pretty lengthy...depending on a few factors.
firstly you would not be able to get into specific levels in the beginning, but you would be able to take examples from all over the game for whatever is being explained.
the topics you just mentioned would merge together to make a great "intro to GE speedrunning" video. but for that video to exist, there would have to be more, cant have an intro and not follow it up.
in my opinion its totally worth doing a series of videos. sounds like luke is down to try and produce something and if you do, luke, personally i would appreciate it alot, even though I think I know everything(lol) about GE, i would probably learn alot.
later videos could go into detail about specific levels, maybe do groupings of levels based on difficulty or similarities. all the short levels would be easy to start off with (anything under a minute that isnt train agent rofl) then you can refer to the intro video so you dont have to explain the basics again and again.
i look forward to this :D
and this

Referring to the intro video would definitely speed things up :) For grouping I'd think it would make more sense to just group the levels in order (eg. Dam, Fac, Run in one video, Surface, Bunker, Silo in another etc) - then it could be watched in order in one viewing too. If only doing Agent and the basics are covered elsewhere it wouldn't need each video to be that long would it?
If folk are interested in arranging something maybe start a new topic to hash out ideas. I have experience with video editing in Sony Vegas but obviously as a noob speedrunner Im not in a position to put together the videos - if I knew how you fuckers ran so quick I wouldnt need a video strat anyway lol ;D

Lol. I've talked to you in my stream quite a bit and you're not that bad. I showed you how to throw the tracker bug on Frigate, but besides that I think you're gonna be a decent up and comer like me :kappa: Just keep practicing bro and if there's anything else you need to know, just let me know.
