Hey there.
It's likely that your TV has a huge amount of input delay. That's just a problem with new TVs.
Your options are either to deal with it (which is going to be pain) or get yourself a cheap, old CRT TV. Shouldn't set you back more than $30 really, and it's the best for any old console gaming.

one of those old big fat ass tube tv's is the way for GE speedrunning.

yeah thought that, thanks for the replies folks

Yes, exactly like Softman said. Anything LCD, Plasma, 3D, etc, takes like 40 seconds for the signal to come in when you're watching TV. If you're watching an old TV with an antenna right beside, you will notice the difference.
For video games, the lag difference is like 1 sec but it's still awful.
I recommend going to the thrift shop. You should be able to find one for like $5 or $10. If not, try kijiji, craiglist, etc other online classifieds. CRT TVs are the easiest thing in the world to find and it's a complete joke when new speedrunners are all like "wahhh I can't find one."

I have a backup 27 inch CRT in my closet in case my primary 27 inch ever shits out :p

Went to the pawn shop today to get myself a new CRT tv that has support for both NTSC and PAL signals. Bought two small ones that both support it. (Philips). Set me back about 10 bucks.
Have heard stories that it is hard to find TVs that support PAL in America though? :kappa:

America isn't exactly PAL friendly :kappa:

LOL @ the concept of getting a PAL TV to function in the Americas.
Would be similar to trying to get a right-hand-drive Peugeot from France certified for road driving in the USA.

most of the input delay on flatscreen tv's comes from the image enhancing filters, such as (but not limited to) noise reduction. the analogue/digital converters these days in tvs are actually very fast.
Many of these televisions should have a "game mode" where all image enhancing filters and processes are turned off, and therefor greatly decreasing input lag. You should look for it in your tv menus before you decide to go out and buy an old CRT tv.

I utilized this option on my 42" Samsung flatscreen, but it still delivered horrible lag. Not positive, but I think mine is a 2008 or 2009 model, so maybe it's gotten better in the last few years. Regardless, I concur with all the other guys that say CRT tv's are far better for speedrunning GE. Such has been the case in my experience. :)

Game mode is usually ok for casual play, but for n64 and speed running in general, yeah your going to be delayed, and any delay is not ok

Glen Stevens got into the top 10 using a plasma with lag. I got several wr's with a laggy lcd. Basically, we are amazing. However I bought 1 CRT for $2, one for $20, and a 27 inch for $25. IT felt amazing. Felt like I came over and over and over again in my mum's mouth.
Took a couple of days to get used to it but never looked back. Now my times are amazing and I have a lower body fat percentage. Thanks CRT! :)
