I know topics like this have been made in the past but people retired in the past because they were either too tired of the game or had to move on. Well, my reason for retiring is simple: it is too easy to splice videos in GoldenEye so there is absolutely no point in playing. How do I know if Marc's Bunker 2 Agent 0:23 is really legit? What if it was just another 24.00 with a shark'd endscreen? Even top players like Boss/Clemens agree with me that GoldenEye is a bad game to speedrun because it's insanely easy for cheaters to fake a time. What is the point of spending dozens of hours into getting an insane untied when there might be other players out there who user their video editing skills to make their way to the top? Also, what is the point of streaming the game when only 4 or so people watch you go for some sick time? This is why I don't like streaming anymore either. It's depressing.
I'm also disappointed people think "z0mg you have dat unstoppable luck" "LOL another ace luck run!?!?!? :v " "gonna watch dat luckfest 131 now :nesquik: :nesquik: :nesquik:", it's pretty sad honestly. Everyone has their share of luck in the game and denying that is just ignorant. Consistency matters far more than luck too (hint hint I had more than 5 legit 131 fails) but I guess not many people realise that. :nesquik:
So to sum up: I am done with GE forever. It's a really nice game to speedrun for me but unfortunately some people have ruined it completely. Clemens has pretty much retired from GE too and it doesn't seem like he will ever care about it anymore. Since me and him were really good rivals in 2008 and 2010 it's pretty worthless to continue. I might play PD from time to time since its a lot more better since *GASP* you can't fake vids there. I would like to get a really solid PD PA time.
I know I have disappointed a lot of people by making this decision but such is life.
stay true everyone :nesquik: :v

This saddens me greatly but I totally understand your reasoning behind it.
Best of luck in the future, make sure to stop by the board on occasion though!
-
Yeah this is bullshit. Ace, everyone LOVES you here man. Don't let bad eggs like Henning ruin the experience here for you. I'm pretty down about it myself, but this is insane.
I also don't believe you :nesquik: , there's no reason to "retire". Clemens retired because of the Superpad and because you were too good :kappa:

I have only one thing to say.
Shit...
Goldeneye has lost a great player today.

if it's viewership you want, you'll have to look on other sites to increase that since the elite is very small for a viewership community but with those viewers you won't be able to have much of a real conversation about the game you're playing and have to answer the same Q over and over and over again.
regarding people hey at least it's just times--kart had a guy who created a new identity every few months (ended up a bunch of accounts were banned at once, he claimed to be people from everywhere, he obv had proof vids), the best one is spending months pretending to be a 16* year old girl and I'm sure at least one karter fell for "her". Yes, even IM convos for months.
In serious tho ace, just give it time before saying FOREVER. There's plenty of people who enjoy watching your WR vids or want you to race with them but you have to do what's best for yourself and only you know what that is.
gaming retirement really just means at this point in time, fuck it.

I think webcam + commentary is something many people seem to want (I don't think people who know the game cares as much) and would therefore increase your viewer count. Other than that, the only thing you can do is to stream on a regular basis.

It's hard to take a retirement topic on the Elite seriously but I'll try my best. Retiring from Goldeneye speedrunning because of splicing is funny in the way that you've been speedrunning since 2006 (?) but you never really thought about how video editing could be used by many players. However, this whole Henning situation that has arisen does make you realize that splicing could really be part of any time on the ranks now. I've spoken to my brother about Goldeneye speedrunning on numerous occasions and he asked "Can't people just fake videos?". The answer is obviously yes and it really sucks that we don't have a method of checking if every run is 100% legitimate. Almost completely discourages you to even speedrun the game. I myself even felt less enthusiastic about playing the game with this whole Henning thing.
For streaming, you really need at least a microphone and decent quality to have a successful stream. I know you don't talk much while you play but it might be worth trying to commentate more when you have a microphone set up to have a stream with many viewers. You're already on SRL so you're one step ahead a lot of us to getting a great stream going. Also, this is just my opinion, I love having streams with less people. The only reason I wouldn't like Goose's stream is because he has a lot of viewers and the chat is all over the place and they sometimes say retarded things. For streaming, skill in-game doesn't matter very much. It's more about creating an attractive stream with good commentary, decent quality and other things like webcams and controller cams.
The people who said your run was luckbox are either stupid or trolling. I'm assuming Inky gave you a similar type of comment on your 1:31 but he's a troll. :nesquik: I'm honestly surprised that people seriously said that to you, it's pretty dumb.
It really sucks to see you leave the game. It really makes me wish I came so much earlier to the Elite to witness more of the skill you have. You're one of the best players here and it's really been nice talking to you. You're an awesome/smart guy who is always willing to help a noob out. I hope you reconsider soon and come back. Good luck and I wish the best for your future.

The stuff gotten on stream are really hard to fake, especially since you can make the player prove that the recording is real by asking them to do something unpredictable.
-
Yeah I think the future of proof for Speedrunning will lie around streaming with mic and or webcam
Cosmo was talking about Super Mario 64 splicing the other day on his stream and pretty much said anyone with mediocre video editing skills can splice together a 1:43:xx 120 star, but no-one would believe him because he's never shown his skills on stream. Even just a mic with live footage is pretty much impossible to fake live, hearing the controller inputs is pretty good proof imo.
More on topic: I hope this was just a moment of frustration magnified by certain things Ace, and not a permanent viewpoint. You are one of the players who most inspire me to go for good times. If you do keep playing PD and streaming it (your PA runs were getting 50+ viewers which is awesome) I think a mic would be nice, even if you only say 2 or 3 words every 10 minutes it just helps to personalise the steam / run. Wish you all the best, Luke

Am i the only fucking one who got the refference about the splicing thing :kappa: :kappa: :kappa:
Anyway if anything, Ace is likely just taking a huge break again etc. Besides, the 1st. place will be a cake ride if Ace retires now.

ace, subtle as ever

After having watched random streams on SRL the past few months, you can definitely tell that's it's more about the person and the quality of the stream that attracts viewers rather than the game they're playing. I agree with the Eliters here that if you start streaming at a consistent time most days on a regular basis and use a mic, viewership will dramatically increase. If you set up a webcam, viewership will increase even more. Everyone's played GE when they were younger, and seeing a fun FPS get demolished by one of the best players in the world is a recipe for a successful stream. Anyway, hopefully this isn't permanent.
Sucks that GE doesn't have a mission timer on screen and that it has various levels that complete on the last frame of the fade-out. Streaming is really the only good way to prevent cheating.
-
I agree 100% with you, Ace. Henning has been given ample opportunity to come completely clean and has chosen to make a mockery of the Elite in ways that almost nobody ever has. I stand by your decision totally and sincerely hope that the Council can see this matter clearly and erase Henning completely from our ranks.
This is of course if the council agrees to him being a multiple offender.

Hi Rayan. First of all, sorry for my bad English.
It's well known that my PRs aren't top times and my gaming isn't really good, but even considering that, I want to say that I started speedrunning thank to you. Every time I see a video of you I feel the best possible feeling, like "OMG, perfection does exist!". I still remember the first video I saw of you: Villa - PA - 1:32, which amazed me more than anything before that... Since I wasn't speedrunner there, I think the time was even better than my A one, lol.
Well, whatever decission you make, I'll support it, since it will be probably correct, and of course, I'll still keep watching all your videos again and again. I simply want to say that I hope that this isn't a "Goodbye forever", because it would be really a huge shame to lose in the GE Elite one of the best GE speedrunners (and one of the best skilled players) ever, if not the best, due to the egoism of some people that don't wanna play, but to cheat... I really hate that kind of cheating, so of course, I understand your decission... But for example, even though this is not a comparable situation, many people has cheated PD Dark LTKs in order to claim they have completed them, but I don't mind of them, and I'll keep playing till I complete my goal, because I'm happy doing it...
I just wanted make you know that many people like me admires your job on these 2 games, (top eliters and non-top eliters), and many people trust you. I think people should play for fun and not to be better ranked... Plus, even considering that there are times that can be faked, not every time can be faked, and I trust in the Elite Proof Policy, so those cheaters should know that even faking times, they won't ever be better ranked than you, probably, and of course, they'll never play as you play (consider that you have done 44/60 WRs in GE with people like Clemens, Marc and Boss playing till now, and that you became world GE/PD champ with just 13 years old, lol). Plus, still now in 2013, you're able to do more untieds, which is simply awesome...
About Twitch, if I had internet at home, I would be ever connected to your channel, so you would have 1 more viewer :). Not too much, but hope it helps :). Hope that happens before you retire from all the Elite stuff, though :S.
Well, choice the decission you think is the correct one, but please, think about it before leaving the GE speedrunning forever... :/.
-
Well, I can certainly see why you'd be turned off GE speedrunning if people can fake times really easily, but isn't the more important thing here that you enjoy doing it? I mean you must enjoy it to put as much work into as you have, so why stop? Why don't all weight-lifters in the world just give up, because they'll never match the pros who use steroids? Honestly, if you enjoy it and other people enjoy watching you, then I think you should continue.
-
Doesn't seem like good reasons to retire to me.
a) people who watch you play know you are talented. Henning faked a few end screens but he didn't fake most of his talent. There are only a select few who could really fake videos and it's never going to be all of the levels. Control and Frigate are the big ones right?
b) agree with the comment about a consistent streaming time helping with viewership but you really can't expect people to tune in for days to watch failure after failure in a grind for a specific record can you? I'm amazed anyone watches at all but think the community of viewership is fantastic. It makes you feel much less like you're playing alone than in the old days.
c) I don't know anyone who would say you're mostly luck, except Marc, and he doesn't count :P Like Jimbo says, everyone loves you.
d) is this a fake retirement?
-
It's really sad to see you go, and I will always remember you and watch your videos.
Goldeneye 007 is always a great game.
About streaming, I just have 3 or 4 viewers aswell, but atleast you have more proof than ever (:kappa:)
The downside is for less people that they will miss a new PR if set.
d) is this a fake retirement?
Faking retirements is always better than faking vids, so if you really need to fake something, just fake a retirement :kappa: :kappa: :kappa:
-
lol amazing comments from nick as always :)
Phazonn: No top player in GE/PD really enjoys speedrunning anymore. There are like 3 levels which might still be fun for me, but for the rest I'll have to force myself to play if I want to improve my times. Going for Bunker 1 1:02 wasn't fun, nor was Silo 1:22, Surface 2 0:49, nor will Caverns 1:01, Streets 1:12, Statue 2:18s etc.. The game is coming to a point where random lag and tiny stucks will screw you out of a WR. That's why most ILs are really boring now. :nesquik:
Shadow: What if randomly fluked Frigate 00A 1:03 offstream tonight? Getting times like that just don't have the value they once did for me for obvious reasons.
I want to do 100% runs but apart from that, meh. I might play ILs but I won't grind levels anymore. :kappa:
-
That's a much better reason to retire ILs. The randomness factor is why I preferred racing games when going for records myself.
-
Keep playing, Ace. Please :(
You're the one who still will break some WRs that other players can't.
I know some of the best players stopped playing this but if everyone thinks like this, the rank will stuck forever :(
I like watching your videos and there are, for sure, lots of records you still can have.
:/

This is a good read and a good thing to consider when focusing on negative influences.

A freaking shame.
Don't let cheaters hold you back from doing stuff you like. There have been and probably always will be cheaters. Luckily, some (I hope most) get caught eventually. Look at Lance Armstrong, the Henning Blom of cycling. It's his loss that he used dope and lost everything, shouldn't hold other people back from cycling right?
-
Agree ^
Please be back for good, Maxxx!
:D

HOLY SHIT. RED BULL.
Long time no see brother. How's life?
-
You dont know me, but I know you. I may not have the time to sit on twitch to watch WR attempts, but I watch all the PRs and WRs that get posted religiously. Dont stop dominating because someone could pretend to be as good as you; that's just you giving up because you are afraid if you hang around people will surpass you and you wont have the built in excuse of "well if he was still playing he might still be up there." No offense meant, but sack up and entertain me more.
-
Life's great ;)
I promise I will post some more here!
