Title: Controllers?
Post by: Wyst3r on July 07, 2013, 02:03:54 pm
Since i haven't had a playable controller for quite i'm now considering finally getting one. Although after looking through eBay i'm not really sure what the best option would be. So some questions:

Are GC-stick controllers (Hori mini pad, Gamecube controller with adapter etc...) worth considering at all? Or are they unplayable like most 3rd party stuff?

Do good replacement thumbsticks still exist? I got some many years ago that worked perfectly but everything these days seem to be 3rd party stuff that i'm not at all sure about?

If not any of the above, i'm guessing used official controllers are the best way to go (correct me if i'm wrong). If so, should i simply look for anything that seems to have analog stick in decent/good condition?

If you want to get good official controllers...

Quote from: Zenith Legend
FOUR brand new #controllers I got about a month ago

HERE IS THE #SECRET TO WHAT I DID

1) Go to an online classified and search "nintendo 64 controller."  In Canada we have one called kijiji.ca which is good.  USA has craigslist.org.  I imagine Brazil has a similar site.

2) Find a seller who has a LOT of n64 stuff.  Not someone with 1 controller.  Find someone with a LOT of goods.  I'm talking 100s of games and dozens of controllers.  This gives you the best chances that they will have good quality controllers.  The guy I bought from said he buys massive lots constantly to collect, and selling the parts he doesn't want or need.  You want someone like this.

3) Write this person a message, explaining that you are a high level n64 competitor, and there has been a resurgence of activity due to popularity of online streaming, etc.  Explain to them that you need 1 or 2, possibly up to four GOOD QUALITY controllers with #fresh, #tight, #clean sticks like an 18 year old pussy.  #mmmtasty  Also explain to them that since you are a high level competitor, you would like to #MEET in person to look at their stock of controllers and assess for yourself which are the best.

4) Eventually someone will agree to these terms.  Odds are the person you will be contacting is a #Nintendo nerd themselves and will think your gig is pretty cool.  They will be excited to find someone who shares the #passion of Nintendo fandom and they will be open to meet with you.

5) Actually go meet up with this person, look at the controllers, and buy the best one (or four.)

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE NOW ACQUIRED A QUALITY NINTENDO 64 CONTROLLER.

yeah, if ebay is your route, make sure the seller has over 99% feedback and ask as many detailed questions (also ask for as many pics to be sent to your email as you'd like-i've asked for up to 10 before for one controller) as you can to the seller (condition, stick tightness, etc).  i've asked up to 8 questions regarding controllers to a single seller before and i've had solid success.  i've bought over 50 N64 controllers through ebay and i'd say that my ability to study the photos and ask the correct questions has lead me to about 42/50 having been 8/10 condition with 8/10 stick or better.

not sure of the equivalent, but paying 20-25 USD for a good condition, regular color, original N64 controller is about average

The only good options is either a new original controller, or a new original replacement stick. Every now and then they show up on Tradera.

Thank the Lords Ace posted my "buying a controller" tutorial.  Easily the best way.  If you don't do that, and blindly buy one on eBay, and it happens to be a fake 3rd party, or shitty control stick, or whatever, then your fault.

I can echo this.

Being there in person to actually examine the stick is critical.

I got mine from a pawn shop, but I went to the staff and said, "I would like to examine them". On the face of it, they looked the same...but not when I actually tried moving the sticks around.

So yeah *INSERT GOOSE POST HERE* pretty much.

Any ideas on the price on these? Considering how rare new original stuff is these days i'd imagine them being quite expensive. At least on eBay a new original controller seems to be 120+ dollars.

$20

I got 4 for $80

Do exactly what I posted. Enough of your bullshit.

Get a controller and get back into the top 10 where you belong. The top 10 will be down a Swede soon. Your nation is counting on you.

Actual "new" controllers that are still sealed are WAY too overpriced these days, obviously. Goose's strategy of getting a bundle of them and then completely examining the loose controllers before committing is easily the way to go. Shawn's number of successful controller auctions are ballooned up because he is a collector, but I've bought and distributed probably 15 controllers in the last 2 years myself doing the same thing, with a lot of success.

The GameCube controller/stick is absolutely unplayable in my opinion but it makes for great uses on 2.x levels. These controllers are not banned, but beware - your records will be frowned upon by a lot of eliters. (I personally couldn't care less, I'm fine with regular controllers for 2.x)

My current controller, a relatively rare DK64 banana controller, was gotten at a good bargain price because of poor listing quality but great photos to examine. It's obvious what sticks are in perfect condition, but the seller's feedback will tell if he's being truthful about it being completely original.

TL:DR - Go out and buy 4 great condition controllers using Goose's method, it's pretty easy to do. Go for a transparent color, too!

I bought an original and unused controller for 209 kr on Tradera. It was out of the box (opened but never used, according to seller) but it definitely felt like a 10/10. If you manage to find a similar auction or "buy now" I think you can expect a price between 150-400 kr.

I also bought a stick on Tradera for around 140 kr and it feels like an original.

You could hit me up. I'd sell 8+/10 controllers to eliters for $15 a piece. Lord knows I am always sitting on a bunch.
Sure you wouldn't get to see them before hand but my stuff is tight bro.  :nesquik:

I wouldnt mind having a piece of this action  :nesquik:. Should just send a bunch of controllers at the same time so we can share the shipping costs.

I am going through all of my stuff this weekend. I will have an idea of what I have at that time. I found a whole bunch of bins of gaming stuff I forgot I had when I quickly threw them under the stairs for the last MN meet.

Here's a somewhat recent development:
http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5023.0 (http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5023.0)

It takes the Gamecube replacement stick (which we all know feels great but handles crappy) and replaces it with a re-programmed board that doesn't have the sensitivity issues. Everyone says Goldeneye, Smash Bros, and Zelda spin attacks work great on this thing.

He's currently out of boards with more coming in in September perhaps.

By the way: I installed the circuit board I linked to in the last post and it works beautifully. I have a GC-style stick that doesn't have the dead spots and responsivity problems of the regular GC-style stick. Tested it in Smash Bros, GE, and spin attacks in Zelda and all worked great.

I saw a news article that linked to revamped N64 systems. They also sell controllers, does anyone know if they are any good?

I also bought some of those circuit boards, haven't installed them yet though. The original GC style stick still works well for 2nd controller when using 2.4 :nesquik:
