Title: The Return of The ELITE PODCAST!
Post by: Jimbo on May 18, 2014, 03:00:46 am: This topic is going to be dedicated to my revival and future work on what used to be known as the Elite Podcast, assuming most of you remember Softman's bi-weekly attempts at it back in 2012 before his blowup and subsequent departure from the Elite.

With my slick new computer and audio issues finally squared away, I'll be able to host and coordinate some great podcasts in the future the way I think most of us would appreciate. Softman had a good idea with everything he did, but his pace was slow, his accent was bitterly annoying at times, and frankly he was uninteresting. As a top 10 player and Elite historian, I promise some bad ass shows and damn good interviews with some entertaining content hopefully ranging anywhere from 60-90 minutes.

With that said, whenever we host the podcast, someone (region-oriented I mean) is going to get screwed. Late night America is great for us and Australia, but screws over Europe; "after work" America is great for Europe, but not really realistic for American guests, etc. I'm willing to go on a three-week rotating podcast schedule to include everyone on live broadcasts at some point. I have some good visions for this podcast and will do my fair share to make it work.

Final note: I want this first podcast to be somewhat hyped, streamed on theelitegaming, and to recap the last 5 full months of action in GE (and PD :kappa: ), so a fair amount of guests are desired for the first returning show. The Minnesota meet will be happening next weekend along with Clemens leaving the country for a few weeks, so that could be a nice starting point after that to get this started. I want you guys to contribute votes on what times you'd prefer as well, your options are...

Friday evening, 4:00 PM CST
Friday night, 9:00 or 10:00 PM CST
Saturday morning 9:00 AM CST
Saturday evening 4:00 CST
Saturday night 9:00 or 10:00 CST

Those are all Central Standard Time of course, so do the math. Sweden is +7 from me, Australia is +16, etc.

I'd highly recommend hosting on either Wednesday or Thursday nights; OR the Saturday-Sunday split is far better than the Friday-Saturday one.

It's going to be an organized and efficient session of shooting the shit, trolling and joking, some predictions etc. I'm not out to get a big viewer base like Goose has stated.

Maybe it's summer fever for most of the world and and we're enjoying other things in life temporarily, but it wouldn't hurt to come back together and rehash some speedrunning chat. Everyone is a prick lately :kappa:

The commentators were Lockwood, Luke, Wodahs, Goose (half the show) and myself. I'd appreciate some feedback on the show to improve it for next time.

Things I can instantly see that need to be improved:
1. I needed a picture or some other visual thing to use instead of a black screen, so I picked my webcam. It probably wasn't awful, but I'd rather use a nice picture or video.
2. I say "um" way too much, and do weird movements in my chair when talking. No one will notice this if I'm not on video :kappa:
3. We had a decent cheat-sheet / flow-chart to use, but I ended up jumping around topics a bit more then I wanted.
4. Music was too loud at first but I think it goes quiet enough to serve its purpose a few minutes in.

b) I'm not entirely sure what your thoughts are moving forward re: what to focus on, but if you're going to talk about PRs/WRs, you need some kind of image montage/video highlights to go along with it. Listening to people rattle off times isn't any different from just going and looking at the page myself; incorporate something I might not have noticed when I looked at the time on my own, like how significant it was for that person's overall placement, or how good it is compared to their other times.

c) Some gimmicky thing that's compelling, like SportsCenter Top 10. Top 10 PRs of the Month, Top 5 Live Twitch Reactions of the Week, etc. Show me what's happening and count down to the best thing that's happening.

d) If the-elite's presence on twitch has established us as a community, show me the best moments we've had on twitch (don't talk about MJ's greatness, show me the flu game).

e) Think about someone who's visiting the-elite for the first time, and someone who's played the game for 1,000 hours, and do whatever possible to make the podcast interesting for both. If you're going to spend a lot of time interviewing Lockwood, hell, go ahead and show the Streets 1:12 vid that everyone's already seen. Some people haven't seen it, and those who have can enjoy it again. Show reactions to it, give us some idea of who this guy is. (why the rise in popularity? why should I care?)

f) What is the podcast about? Is it a history lesson? Is it a new strat discussion? What are your talking points? If I don't know what's on the docket, and I never get a sense of what's on the docket besides "I've got a cheat sheet and we're gonna cover all the points," then it's harder for me to get interested and follow what's happening. You also mentioned you jumped around a bit; give yourself a strong, specific headline and let the outside material do the work for you (you can fill in the gaps where you need to, don't stress out about this). What's that board top headline advertising? What makes this podcast different from any podcast before or forthcoming?

g) don't open your podcast by sneakily insulting the previous host you mook

h) good luck and all the best, you've got potential

i) lose some weight

The sound of Jim's sweet voice is enough for me.

I think this show was *way* better than the first, both visually and with how streamlined everything was. Would appreciate feedback/criticisms if you can be arsed to watch a 54 minute show (or snippets of it). We showed four videos, and spent a fair amount of time talking about the fantasy league at the end.

I realize you do this via timeline but I probably would've opened with the fantasy league. people seem interested in that moreso than actual wr's. Though I think it's b/c the guys more known for zelda have seemingly never been in a fantasy league.
