Been to this bar several times, lol. Non-gaming related of course :p About a 10 min drive. Shame I never got into competitive Kart or Smash!
If they had PD multi I'd consider!
-
Going.
Awesome looking forward to seeing you there.
Anyone else attending for sure?

OK I'll be the anti-troll here...
"2 condescending 4 you" is Karl Jobst, a resident of Australia - not coming
"Malaysia Airlines Flight 370" I'm pretty sure is David Clemens, a resident of Minnesota - not coming
Making a topic on our boards isn't the right place to advertise a tournament. I'm now aware that Eddie Lovins is the one putting up the $150, which is insane because it's basically him risking it all and having to make the 4 hour drive himself just to have some fun. I live in Green Bay, WI and would consider going sometime just to hang out and check the place out, but Eddie and I have agreed that sharks shouldn't eat other sharks!
-
Risking it all? Lol, what risk, if I'm the only shark there?
Steph is actually coming with me, so we should lock down both 1st and 2nd in Kart ($150 bonus to that tournament as well), so I get my own money back, plus money of other participants, plus Steph's 2nd place winnings...could still break even with gas money and one-night hotel stay. Should be a fun trip regardless though.
-
Please don't listen to Jim, he's the biggest troll on these boards.
I AM going, and I look forward to spending Eddie's money ;) Can't wait, should be great!

So the tournament was pretty cool. We got there and there was a line out the door of people signing up so was good to know it wouldn't be another bust. Sat down with Steph to warm up some Kart and a couple others joined and they were pretty bad and we were getting 1st/2nd every race. Then another guy came along and I saw he was MTing very well and I could tell Steph would no longer be a lock for 2nd. We started the tourney (9 people entered) which had a very goofy set of scoring rules but after the prelims I was first overall in points and Steph was 4th. By this time I noticed there a few very solid players, enough to make me a bit nervous since I hadn't practiced much. Advanced from the semis to the finals. In the finals it was first to 30 points (each race was 1st = 9 points, 2nd = 6, 3rd = 3, 4th = 1) and I ended it pretty quickly by going 2nd/1st/1st/1st. Won $240, so taking out the $150 I added to the pot = $90 profit. Smash 64 was tough, my first
match I got 5-stocked and then 4-stocked, come to find out later that guy was the best player in the state so I didn't feel so bad ha. I ended up finishing 4th out of 12, 1 place out of the money, but was pretty happy with that since there were some insane players there. So then they were about to start GE, which had a whopping 4 entries lol, but still enough to run a small tournament. I started playing with Steph and 1 of the other 3 entries was watching and I didn't want to scare anybody yet so I totally dicked out and let her beat me 10-2 haha. I wasn't even strafing. So the guy watching then plugs in his controller to join and Steph gets out, and I turned it on big time and beat him 10-0 ha. As soon as it was done he gets up and says he wanted to get a refund of his $10 entry fee and get out of the tournament because I was too good. Guess I should've went easy on him too...but they wouldn't let him get his refund anyways. The other 2 guys sat down
and were pissed off that we were doing LTK. We had this 2 minute argument with them wanting to play normal and I wouldn't budge, fuck normal. So we started the tourney (LTK) and the first match I was fucking awful and won 10-9-?-?. So I went to change it to first to 20 since I forgot the first match and those 2 fags are like what are you doing? If it's supposed to be first to 20 then we have to redo the first match. The guy with 9 was like, I only lost by 1, I could've beat you if it was to 20. So I'm kind of pissed off but thinking fine, I'm going to do a hell of a lot better anyways, so I just agreed, and the do-over match I won something like 20-7-?-?. The match after that was Complex and I won that 20-2-1-0 lmao. After that they knew what was up and stopped thinking they had a shot, though they kept bitching about me screen watching...noobs. The last match they actually teamed up on me and purposely fed each other kills but I still won 20-14-?-?. So
that was that, and I won $180, minus the $150 I put in = $30 profit. Total of $120 profit for the day.

Wow, that was a pretty epic meet. I can imagine getting frustrated when a pro from the-elite suddenly shows up and wrecks face :P

"Malaysia Airlines Flight 370" I'm pretty sure is David Clemens, a resident of Minnesota - not coming
lol no :nesquik:

I'm not liking the username chaos around here lately
Lovins please go and hurt some feelings
-
Are tournaments common? I'm about 4 hours north of Green Bay and would very much like to see how I stack against you "sharks".
Jimbo, got any info??
-
4 hours north of Green Bay = Houghton Michigan? Superior Wisconsin? Fill me in!
-
I'm from right next door to Hurley, WI , but now I'm living in Marquette, MI.
I never realized a community like this existed. Like the rest of you (I'm sure), I've never really been tested by friends or locals. I took my N64 down to school when I moved for college and on the first night in the dorms got 3 guys that all claimed to be unbeatable at it. I hooked up the system, set LTK, first to 10, Pistols...... won 10-0-1-0. We never even played a 2nd game because they all lost interest right away.
Single player never really excited me, but man would I love to play some H2H against someone that doesn't ask "why do you move faster than me?" (because I use c-buttons for movement).

The vast majority of us have gone to national meets and have been a part of massive tournaments against the best players in the world. We actually have meets right just south of the Twin Cities like twice a year with some serious talent that attends. The host is Dan Edeen and it's always a great time, usually like five or six of us.
Hurley? Damn son, snow city. I'd be down with meeting up sometime, or better yet you coming to Farmington MN during the week of Nov 5-11.
-
Funny, because we had tickets to the Jets vs Packers games this weekend but my friend was cut from the Jets when they made their preseason roster cuts. Would have been down there this weekend.
The meet is the whole week long? Not sure I could do that, but I could probably get there for the weekend.
-
Btw, we'd have to rip out some NFL Blitz if any of you guys play that.
-
Welcome! This is cool, I always wished the Elite would get more outside competition in multi, so I hope you end up meeting some of us at some point. There have been a couple groups of guys who showed up on YouTube, who based on their vids and strats appeared very legit, but eventually disappeared even after initially saying they wanted to meet up. Hopefully you don't do that :p I will almost certainly go to Chicago again at some point, they do a monthly Smash tournament but it's only when I put up my extra money into the pool the one time (above) that they got decent GE/Kart interest.
Oh, and Blitz is fucking awesome.
-
blizt hype
-
The meet isn't really a week, that's just how long Alex Anderson is going to be there. I personally will probably arrive Thursday night and leave Monday morning.
-
Dan Edeen here...
I think you should come down for the weekend. it's not too often you see people from outside of the Elite with better than average knowledge on the game. I am down for some Blitz as well. And Smash.
Eddie... You should try and make it sometime. (Maybe even this next one) I have Smash tournaments every weekend (Smash 64/ Melee alternating) and I have some guys show up that are pretty damn good. The last Melee Tournament I hosted had a top 10 on the MN Power Ranks show up and he basically mopped the floor with everyone. (using Kirby) We play Smash, Melee, and Project M until the wee hours of the night on weekends. I would imagine this next meet at my store is going to be some redic hype too.
-
Definitely, the MN meets have always intrigued me. Would be cool to hang with Clemens and those guys again, assuming they're staples at this meet. Keep me in the loop for the next one (and all future ones) and we'll see what happens.
For the record, I'm only average at Melee; those guys would mutilate me. Only really good at 64.
-
Me/boss/jimbo/alex will all be at edeens nov 7-11 or so. Would be epic if another eliter could make it.
-
for the record Ive gotten 50x better at smash 64 since va so would be fun to play some games
-
Eddie you could roll with me and I wouldn't charge gas... Not sure how much time you'd save heading north to GB vs straight to Dan's. You'd get my garage too obv. Up to you.
-
There are some really good Smash 64 players there. They would give you a good run. I wondered how the likes of Matis and Eddie and Alex would do against them since I remember Eddie and Matis played almost every night at VA 2012. You guys would certainly not have a shortage of players in the evening that's for sure.
-
Don't rule me out just yet! I'm just over an hour away and I am a terrible Goldeneye player.
-
Alright I'm most likely in for this. I plan to leave work early Thursday afternoon and head to Jimbo's hopefully arriving late evening. One night there and then we're pooling to Dan's in the morning. Then the plan is to leave Monday morning back to Jimbo's to allow me enough time to get back home by midnight or so.
-
really cool news!
MN meet hype
-
Yes this is good news indeed. With the departure of a roommate we had this leaves the entire basement for the meet. Two bedrooms, an office, a bathroom, and a fairly accommodating living room. We have a good sized chair and a couch upstairs for overflow. I expect the majority of the meet to happen at the video game store I recently opened about 10 minutes from my house. There is plenty of tables and chairs in the back, CRT's, a bathroom, and just about any game you can imagine. It will be set up to be streamed as well. I am hyping the heck out of it, too, so there will be a lot of people coming and going to see us all. Some are speedrunners themselves, (Top 10 Mario 64 120 star speedrunner lives a few blocks away), some watch Twitch and are familiar with AGDQ, the-elite, Goose, etc, and some are casuals that want to see really good people play.
So the attendee list as it stand now is:
Myself
Jimbo
Clemens
Boss
Koch
Alex
Lovins
Pending:
Drag (Someone reach out to him?)
Ben Mullen (Top 2 in the world at Tetris - he's made appearances before)
Thingy
Am I missing anyone?
-
So, I've talked my S.O. into approving the trip on the basis that she gets to go to the Mall of America. Looking like this MIGHT have a possibility of happening for us, as long as we are invited.
-
I'm not a fan of losing, though, and will most likely get smoked in Goldeneye. I repeat, we must play some Blitz or Griffey Slugfest (get out the rye bread and mustard grandma, it's grand salami time!). I've gotta keep my mojo in something.
-
Ben Mullen Top 2 at Tetris sounds like a legitimate fucking legend.
Sounds like a fun meet. Would be fun to join (though not possible.) Enjoy guys.
-

Aww...you had sounded so confident at first :p But yeah, hope you can make it even if it's just for a day. Blitz, for sure.
And yeah, I'm looking forward to watching this Ben Mullen guy, #2 in the world tetris will be incredible to see in person.
