Title: Hi again + Train Idea
Post by: Pyro on July 17, 2014, 06:57:50 pm
Hey everyone, how's it going?

It's Emile Broekhuizen here, prolly better known to most of you as that little twerp from 10 yrs ago who changed his name to remain on the site  :kappa:

Just recently got back into playing N64 and speedrunning a bit myself, nothing too serious though. I have to say it's very cool to see this site still rolling and the way times are pushed are insane.
I think I stopped playing when Bryan took over #1 GE spot from Wouter and took #1 from YE in PD.

I gotta say back when I saw vids from Wouter and Bryan playing, I at least had the feeling it were 2 human beings playing,.. amazing at what they were doing and persistent in achieving their PR/WR's, but seeing this new #1 guy on GE and PD, Rayan, is like "holy fuck" level. Feels like an AI is playing it. Really really great stuff!

Anyways, I just noticed smth when playing myself. This might be totally oldschool and known for years, but maybe its not, so I thought I'd make an account and post about it.

Train: in the final room with Trev is it worth noticing that when u press start and enter your menu, and press start again to return, the music immediately switches and keeps resetting everytime u return from your start menu. I've not seen this being done on both Control and Train on the World Record vids, however I seem to see a slight positive difference in time when pausing just every time AFTER u can hear Natalya typing.

On Control I've seen guards INSTANTLY spawn after pausing and returning. Example: checking right side: no guards near or top the stairs.. no one in sight at all... press start (after already done so 10x in the 1st room when she's trying to open the door) to meek it a speed pause --> return --> guard in front of you. I dont know whether or not Natalya leaves after a certain amount of time or after a certain amount of guards have spawned; might it be the last, this pause thing might rly cut some seconds.

Anyways, back to train. I just made a little vid so u can see what I mean. On the vid itself there's not rly a speed benifit as far as I can tell. But maybe some of you masterminds can help think along and maybe invent a trick to cut some seconds.

Probably this is already known but if not, go nuts.

Last thing I'd like to add:

Alex & Ryan's 2.2 style run and Boss's PD Perfect Agent run on AGDQ- best runs ive seen in years ;) Great stuff!

hi and welcome back, 10 years ago was exactly when I found this site and I was proven GE champ for like 1 month at the beginning of 2007 or so nice to meet you  ;D

you could tell easily on train if it saves time because there's a timer, if you kill xenia Nat completes at like 20ish seconds and that's where you paused, probably the pausing gives an illusion that it's going faster but yea it could be checked into further maybe

Yeah it doesn't save anything, in-game timer runs just like normal.

Btw, the music thing happens on Cradle as well, when Trev runs for the lower platform. I'm starting to think it might happen on all levels that has a music change mid-level.

There is a spawn point for one of the black-hatted guards just outside the door Natalya comes from. He can (and likely will) spawn there as soon as you look away. See the "Goldeneye Fact's Topic" for a complete breakdown of Control guard-spawn behaviour, as well as Natalya's leaving mechanics (it's entirely based on a timer, not #guards killed).

Sup Illu, thanks & nice to meet the legendary 0.05 boss  8)

Yeah I figured it was a long shot. As for train my vid is not the proper material for it. I should not have been lazy and made a more "clean" version where Im pretty sure Ive seen it save a few 1--3 seconds.
Also, smth I dont know is, but what I expect: The very 1st pause/unpause starts the final music and I think it might speed Natalya's initiaiton on the objectives/computer.

@Wyst3r: Im pretty well known with the guard spawns in Control as it is one of my personal favorites. Yet, when u are alrdy in speed-pausing mode, I can hardly believe a guard runs from the point u mention to the MIDDLE of the room IN THE BACK in just what a semi-second?. No matter the spawn that should take a few seconds and Im talking bout a guard being straight in my face, which is also weird because the guard, no matter where he spawned, could have seen me from a distance and started shooting (like the black hats so like to do). Instead he runs/spawns next to my feet. All of this in 0.5 secs of a fast pause.

Not saying you're wrong, just brainstorming about what happened in some of my runs, where I tried the pausing.

Peace

It just seems like they come out faster because the pause takes longer than you realize. Anyway the in game timer runs the same so all you found is a better way to make the protect annoying :nesquik:

With that said however, i believe pausing could be the key to a new strat somehow. Ive noticed that when you pause it makes guard do things, like they move around and make strange movements, like on aztec for example sometimes if the glass doesnt open and you keep pausing it will open because it triggers guards to move. Not sure how this would become a new strat anywhere, but its possible.

Some sort of pause abuse to trigger better glass consistently would be useful in 100% and SA full game runs

Cool, I didn't know that about Aztec.
