I think we need a thread, separate from the GE facts topic, where we post a video and ask Wyst3r if what we did was faster.
I'll go first
Killing the S1 SA/00A keyguard on the way OUT only. Strafe directly to GL, then kill guard on way out. What's the timing difference here?
Cheers.

To be a bit serious the responsible thing to do is for you (goose or anyone else) and time it yourself over multiple attempts and try to find an average time (10 times or so or pick your best attempt) for that strat then compare it to the old strat.
It sounds tedious and boring but it will be something worth doing if you think its worthwhile. I would also suggest changing the the title to **OFFICIAL Optimization Timing Thread**
-
The problem is, timing this sort of thing is not feasible without an emulator. Henrik is the only person capable of using one with the awareness of how it affects real game time.
I *feel* this is faster, and tbh my 10k hours playing this game, that "feel" is extremely scientific at this point. But having the data to back this up would be pretty nice.

Alright, so your strat actually seems pretty good to me, and can probably save a fair bit of time if done well. Mainly because it can be done in a very smooth fashion (your vid was obviously very suboptimal compared to what it should look like). Good execution is needed though which might be easier said then done? (it was pretty easy on emulator though, althogh i had a savestate to start from...)
The main issue seems to be that the hut itself is *very* laggy. With your strat, almost the entire hut can be done in lookdown, making it super-smooth. So as you enter the hut, use alot of lookdown. Then before GL pickup, look up just enough to pick up the GL (don't look up for the ammo box, get it on the way back instead).
Right after GL pickup, left strafe only for a moment, then switch to right strafe and go for a headshot on the guard as you pass him (it's easier if he is kneeling, but standing up is not too bad). If you can manage the headshot, then the strat will be really fast.
I can't say for sure how much it can save, but the tests i did seemed to indicate ~10-30 frames (0.16 - 0.5 seconds) (got kinda random results, probably because of the lag, so it's hard to narrow it down any more). Dunno how well it can be done on console though, and if lag is any different there.
-
Sweet, I agree exactly. We are now doing half the hut in lookdown, without slowing down, while before the whole hut was look uped and slowed down. I was thinking 0.1-0.5 seconds from "feel," if done well of course, so your tests check out. It's slightly harder, or maybe we're just not used to it, but it does seem to be the more optimal strat.
Cheers, much regards, thank you for checking. Hopefully a lot of good can come of this thread. I'll change the name a bit to appease Wodahs :nesquik:

Right strafe headshot? We need to leave in left.
I tried the strat yesterday for some time. The turn into the hut felt so much better and low lag but getting the kill on the strafe felt near-impossible. The only way I could kill him consistently was using c-up but you can get stuck on the doorway like this. It also gets pretty laggy where you look up to kill the guard.
-
Killing keyguard on way out is generally slower. Its laggy. Less comsistent and if he doesnt do a fast animation he will still be by the crate. If done optimally it is faster im sure, but with how poor the odds are not sure its worth it even for 147, who knows for sure though.
-
26 frame difference in this case (0.4333 seconds). This vid also shows the kind of execution i was talking about. Might be hard to pull of on console though.
-
It's a lot harder to pull of on console. It's so laggy when you look up and he can be in a variety of positions.
-
It isnt practical to use either. Youd leave in right strafe which isnt gonna work, etc. Pretty inconsistent way to gain some tenths. Better off finding better boost spots, better door entry strats or wait out insane boostage
-
It is practical. I can do it pretty consistently and almost as good as Henrik does in that video. It allows you to a take a slightly tighter turn to the hut as well, which seems good.
With this and 2.x, I should be able to get 1:47 as soon as I get set up NTSC again.
-
so you just change strafe after you leave the hut? Hm

Clemens stop being washed up

Wow, thats cool to hear Ace.
-
Really stupid idea.
With the new caverns sa mine over the wall strat, any chance that works with modems?
frigate or possibly dam 00 from mainframe area.
I know this will get shot down very quickly, but I never seen anybody suggest or mention if it works for modems.
-
at this point everything that's paused and thrown should be tested modem throws/bug throws/plastiques/etc
-
yeah bcks that's not a bad idea, but it should go in the strats thread or another thread. It's not an optimization. I agree throwing plastiques through rooms needs to be investigated but this isn't the thread for it.
