Title: Silenced PP7
Post by: Taylor on January 21, 2015, 04:35:27 pm
Recently, while listening to one of my favorite albums to come out of 2014 'Run The Jewels 2' by Killer Mike and El-P, I noticed that in one of their songs, 'All My Life', they sampled the silenced PP7 sound effect from our beloved Goldeneye at about 35 seconds in:

I had to go back and listen again because I thought I misheard it, but that's definitely it. Cool enough, right? Well as I'm getting ready for work today, listening to Lil Wayne's new mixtape 'Sorry 4 The Wait 2' that dropped yesterday, I notice the same PP7 sound effect used at around 40 seconds into the song 'Used To (ft Drake)'

http://www.audiomack.com/song/sxn80/used-to-ft-drake-1 (http://www.audiomack.com/song/sxn80/used-to-ft-drake-1)

What is happening? Is this the beginning of a new trend in hip-hop? Why use the the sound of a silenced PP7 from an N64 game made in 1997 to accentuate dope beats instead of something that actually sounds like a fucking gun? Will we see more use of this sound in the future? Will the biggest producers in the rap industry start sampling more Goldeneye sound effects as the trend continues? When is Kanye going to rap over a remix of the 'Runway' theme song? Will Yung Lean's new album exclusively sample the Goldeneye OST? How does this relate to the mysterious UFO Goose sighted at AGDQ?

My head is spinning. I need to lie down and get some fresh air, this is too much for me to take in all at once.

I tried listening to Death Grips once and I'm still not entirely sure they're not a joke group.  It barely sounded like recognizable music.

They're certainly not for everyone, and experimental/industrial hip-hop isnt the easiest thing to get into even if you are already an avid fan of rap in general. I wouldn't really think to advise you listen to them based on your music taste, but if you'd like a basic understanding of their popularity then I'd recommend listening to some of the songs from The Money Store ('I've Seen Footage'/'Fever'/'Hacker' etc), which is by far their most accessible album and a good jumping off point for casual listeners.

yeah death grips is definitely not for Goose

I'm actually not too huge on them myself, but some songs I really get into

if you like a lot of Yeezus you could probably find a way into death grips, the two go hand in hand sort of

This reminds me that every year I discover less current music than the year before, favoring older stuff that I've missed or pre-2000 classics.

I hereby hire TaylorTot as my "current" music advisor. Basically once a month I'll ask you for 2 or 3 albums or songs or whatever that came out that you think are dope. you don't have to base it off my tastes just if you think it's good, and I'll give it a shot. I know that there are plenty of YouTube channels I could get info about new music etc but fuck em.

Actually I just had an even better twist to this idea.

TaylorTot is the New Music Expert and I'll be the Old Music Expert. Done.

the new Joey Bada$$ album has a song called O.C.B. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDQ6RnxboiQ) The whole album is pretty good.

there was one lyric from a Death Grips song, something about riding a dick, which was a really good lyric.

Neat response because I was kind of trying to troll you back for trolling me in that "Mirrormage can't relate" topic but you responded very politely and civilized.  Especially impressive given music is like the 4th biggest trigger topic online.

I respect your musical taste and am glad to hear we all mutually respect one another in this thread.  Cool stuff with the PP7 sample.

This is a cool. I do try and keep up with new releases so I can do this for sure.

Word, both are really abrasive and take a certain mindset to fully enjoy. Also the first track off of Yeezus (On Sight) sounds straight up like a Death Grips instrumental to me, so you're on point with that comparison.

the new Joey Bada$$ album has a song called O.C.B. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDQ6RnxboiQ) The whole album is pretty good.

I've been meaning to listen to this album, I've only heard good things. The title is also extremely clever imo (B4.DA.$$ = Badass / Before Da Money)

there was one lyric from a Death Grips song, something about riding a dick, which was a really good lyric.

GOT THE NASTY IN MY TAXI
YOU NEED A LIFT
YOU CAN SIT BETWEEN THE BACKSEAT AND MY DICK
('Hunger Games' from No Love Deep Web, actually my favorite song from my favorite album of theirs)

A worthy counter-troll. But yeah lots of people get really pissy over music online, music taste is completely subjective and no one has 'better' taste than anyone else (to a certain extent) so I try to respect everyone's opinions.

hmm that wasn't the lyric.  I think it was more explicitly about "ride my dick."  It was from one of their most popular songs too maybe?

UPDATE: I have discovered yet another use of this sound effect, this time from Dr Dre's album '2001' at around 3:03 in the song

Dugg you're probably right about the sound effect pack thing, funny that it was used even 14 years ago as RTJ2 and the new Wayne mixtape are less than a year old.

LOL!  Yeah that is 100% Natalya's getting shot sound.  It might be a stock sound since forever and Goldeneye took it from the same database History did here?  Or History just ripped it from GE.

I've heard Bond's breath sound when getting shot during NFL commercials before, as well as the PP7 shots and Archives metal doors throughout the years on TV.

From Drake's new mixtape "If You're Reading This It's Too Late"

This song looks like it was recycled from a previous Lil Wayne mixtape

I got you!

"Responsibility's cool,
 but there's more to life
 Like getting your dick
 Rode all fucking night"

~ I Want it I Need it - from Exmilitary.

Side note ~ I found this thread when I heard the same silenced PPK shot in Run The Jewels today.  I checked, and lo-and-behold, I was on the Speed Runner site for Goldeneye!  I remember watching countless videos of you all on youtube.  I am pretty sick at Goldeneye, but nowhere close to speed runner status!!  Love Run the Jewels, Love Death Grips, Love Goldeneye, and Love all of you!

Peace.

I produce rap beats and the sound is included in a couple fairly popular "producer packs," including HitBoy's and Metro Boomin's. I never connected it to GE though, good shit.

a UK Garage track back in 2000/1 used a whole heap of samples from GE including the silenced pp7, then again it was called 007 licence to kill

theres a mix of it floating around on youtube but features bullshit mc's vocals on it, i'll stick to my instrumental copy i have on vinyl tho
