Title: Advice to a new runner
Post by: GoMattFlach on February 06, 2015, 05:58:04 am
Hey guys,

What is your advice for someone starting GE speed running?

Should I start by doing full game runs or start on a certain level in particular?

Also, I've been checking out a lot of the tutorials and they are really helpful.

See you around!  :D

Hi!

Start by learning 1.2 control style if you haven't already, learn either the alien finger or keyboard style grips, and pick a level to start grinding. Good starter levels are Dam A 54, Runway A 23, Archives A 17, and Depot A 26. Tutorials and WR videos are your friends, and the community is happy to help if you have specific questions or need advice. Streaming also helps as well if you're able to.

Be prepared for the grind and have fun!

1. it is the journey, not the destination
2. watch lots of videos of good players
3. play levels which interest you - hopefully basic levels to begin with
4. avoid SA / 00A to begin with, unless it is basic or has a low risk of dying
5. ask lots of questions
6. watch lots of videos of good players
7. record all of your attempts
8. avoid RTA until you have points and know most of the levels on agent
9. learn about some basic goldeneye history
10. watch lots of videos of good players

Thanks Icy,

I've already picked up 1.2 and slowly learning alien finger so it sounds like I'm on the right track.

I've been watching some of the streamers in here for a while and it seems like you have a great community here. Cant wait to get involved!

Lol Mirror.

What is the best way to record runs as well? I have absolutely no idea.

Capture card will be required if you plan on getting any good times or WRs, but if you don't have one yet then pointing a camera at your tv should work for a bit (work on getting a cap card though). Like Luke said, it's about the journey, not necessarily the goal: Goldeneye grants skill to those who play the game and play it frequently. If you're ever wondering why you cant get a certain time on a level, watch more videos/ask questions/play more.

And most importantly, regarding the forums: The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

Many players use a DVD recorder to record their gameplay onto rewriteable DVD's, this prevents any loss of footage due to computer related issues such as a random crash. Take it from me, you really dont want to lose proof of an amazing run because your computer decided to shit the bed on the run of your life.

edit: that being said, i still use a capture card... and my computer still could crash

Yeah fair enough, I haven't been playing long but I could imagine how shattering loss of proof would be.  I will have to start looking around for options.

Just don't get 53, 22 or 17 as your 1st WR :kappa:

Stick to the level you like and push it as far as you can

Healthy fats like coconut oil and avocado are good fuels for the brain, caffeine can help boost reactionspeed, try what works for you. Be aware some foods like garlic might cause brain fog and slow down mental capacity, also always only drink organic coffee since coffee is heavily sprayed with pestisides and those will fuck your brain up and you might end up playing 10h extra for a time only because your brain was not firing properly.

loool @ recommending a DVD recorder in 2015 :D

Get an active (powered) composite splitter and a Dazzle or a similar USB capture device like EasyCap and record to your hard drive with some lossy standard encoding like H.264 AVI. Should give great quality with only 1-2GB/hour. In the beginning it's a bit a of a hassle with trying different settings, but once you're settled you'll have robust HQ recording. And you can always backup the small data volume of your PRs to another HD or stick, no need to use ancient stuff like VCR or DVD.

Enjoy your stay :)

here's some good advice;

1. ignore Illu's advice when it comes to food
2. there are trolls all over the board, don't take anything personally
3. +1 for playing levels that interest you. My first WR was train 1:06 because I enjoyed the level and grinded it more than the average level. that boosted my confidence as a player. Marc did the same for Aztec. it isn't necessary Dam 0:53 has to be your first WR, but if you enjoy playing it then sure go ahead and play that.
4. when you play a level, watch videos (not necessarily WRs but good PRs on the level can work too) and try to mimic what the players do. naturally over time you will get better at a level. your knowledge of the level increases, you learn musical cues, your control of bond becomes better, etc. it can take a while before you get good. if you have problems with a section then just ask, there's plenty of good players willing to answer your questions.
5. 1.2 is indeed the way to go. the most optimal control style and doesn't wear your stick as easily as 1.1/1.3 do. if you want to practice your 1.2 skills then I recommend learning the alien technique and playing a level like S1 SA, Dam SA, etc. at first.

I must say though DVD recorders with hard drive for me personally have been the most trustworthy recording option, on twitch or even the local recording with OBS have screwed me over a few times with a part missing from a run. My computer being in shitty shape at the time could have caused it though but I have seen it happen to others also at times. Currently I'm only recording trough OBS but I would get a DVD recorder if I could, unfortunately at least in Sweden here they have made the new DVD recorders in a way so there's no easy way of transfering over vids to the computer.

I personally record via DVD and local to harddrive. Always good to have multiple fail safes.

If you only record directly to twitch, your internet going out is GG.
If you only record to computer, Bluescreen or something = GG

Only a complete power outage will screw you over if you use DVD and local. But in which case your n64 is going off too so your covered

Was wondering if I could get some help on Dam 54? I keep getting 55 and I feel some pointers could help me get over the line.
Would It be OK to post a vid here or should I chuck it in General or something?
