this is an effort to prevent what I seem to feel is a slowly growing wave of irrels who never play the game taking up more and more of discord

as an irrel myself who isn't too familiar with the GE discord specifically but has experience moderating communities of other speedgames:
- a hard restriction on access to the discord is bad. you always want new players to be joining or your speedgame will die as soon as the players who are already here decide to move on. restricting access to community activities is a very good way to discourage new players from participating and you do not want that.
- a place for intelligent discussion amongst the most competent players is also very healthy for the development of your speedgame. you don't want your efforts towards new strategy developments being interrupted and made more awkward by people asking questions and proposing theories for new strategies when said questions and theories have already been pondered by the elite players.
- viewers hardly ever deserve access to places of actual relevant discussion. most of what they have to say is best expressed through twitch chat in livestreams, youtube video comments, reddit threads, etc. this doesn't mean that you should restrict them from watching the conversations however. if people are intrigued by the community and feel like keeping up without getting directly involved themselves, they should have the right to do so.
based on these points, I feel like 'exclusive club' private chatrooms for the very top of the elite are the best way to go about preserving the community dynamics amongst the very top eliters, while the general discord should remain public, but only people who are actually part of the community and speedrun themselves (place the boundaries for 'being actually part of the community' where it's most appropriate) should receive posting privileges. maybe throw out an #irrel-cesspool channel for non-speedrunners to post in.
this community is really cool. hopefully my input can help in making it even better even just a little bit.

Everyone should be invited.

If you need special spaces you can use the tools to set up additional channels?
-
im the first person to realize the utility of making access as open as possible
the thing is, just like requiring captured runs and decent quality videos, this requirement is so easy to meet that it shouldnt be a problem at all. if you own GE or PD, you do 1 run and post it no matter the time. boom you are in. if you dont have an n64, just make a nice post or become a regular in an eliter stream so people know who you are. none of this is that strict really. i mean, you already have to be manually approved to join the rankings, where no harm can actually be done because a proof mod can just delete anything. in a place where harm can actually be done (discord), there is no barrier of entry.
the set up new channels is the real thing that would close off activity imo

Thingy dropping ZERO useful knowledge or experience as always.................... :-X
I think the elite discord should remain like it is, but we should have no remorse in banning irrels who come in and try to ruin the way things are.
-
Open to anyone.
but also
More open to chucking degenerate new members in the bin
-
i would 100% support this goose and luke, yet i think ive started to realize that people being banned basically never will happen unless they literally talk about killing people IRL or ruin the place for 3 months first. we have a far less severe punishment, the timeout channel, that has basically never been used. if the lesser punishment never gets used, the harsher one will definitely never be used
if we had mods that were more willing to pull the trigger I would not have made this poll. and yeah, this wont keep out some of the bad ones but it cant hurt
-
if we want to restructure the mod team or at least attempt to establish a system within the existing mods to get the bad ones booted when they should be, that would be a fine alternative as well
-
Here is what I would recommend:
- Kicking dsx off the admin team (he's too soft, never pins any important messages, isn't very active and AFAIK he hasn't really banned/kicked out any bad people ever unless told to... basically not as proactive as an admin should be)
- Kicking saity off the admin team (a few of the points above apply to him, also he acts pretty irrational sometimes, like when he banned me from posting in the NSFW channel the other time, also doesn't even follow the rule most people wanted to be followed (name changes))
- Promoting grav to admin (clearly wants to implement change, doesn't have the ability however... my only concern is he might act too prematurely)
- Promoting Ace to admin (knows when to pin and post important messages, good at managerial work and dealing with people and knows when to ban them, etc)
- When someone joins the Discord, allow them access to all channels if they have been posted a record or have been a member already for a while. If they are new and 'irrel' confine them to an intro channel where they have to read the rules for 5 mins before they get access... if not this maybe a similar system
I don't think having requirements for entry is healthy

also mod me lol

Let people who dont have a PR / contribution to the community have a "lurker" role, where they could read all channels but not post?
