Title: 2018 - Highs & Lows & Goals for 2019!
Post by: DYM on January 01, 2019, 11:53:15 pm
As per the Szklarz tradition, here's the healthy High & Lows thread! In case you're new or aren't aware, this is where you reflect upon 2018 personally and list down some of the successful and unsuccessful things that have happened to you during the year. Can be anything, GE, PD, RL, etc!

Feel free to list your goals as well this time. Then you can look back a year later and see how many you had achieved. :)

Post away, mates! I will post my list soon. :)

Highs:

My first year in the Elite community was a great experience. I'm happy to have met so many great people and achieved many good times. I'm generally happy with the way things are in this community and enjoy being around the people in discord and what.
Some of my best times include:
-Boring 4 (minus archives 16)
-S1 Agent 1:03
-Streets SA/00a 1:56s (The 00a run was just a few frames away from skipping 155 lmao)
-Invest Agent 1:05
-Invest SA 2:08
-Chicago Agent 0:15
Proud of my progression in one year so far and looking forward to my improvement this year, which I'll discuss in goals

As far as IRL stuff goes, I was accepted into the U of Northern Colorado School of Music, the best in the state of Colorado. I'm eventually looking to pursue a music composition degree, and I feel that I made a lot of good steps this year in achieving that goal.
Before that, even, I graduated high school through the IB program (which is basically AP on steroids). It was a decision I made to go through this program many years ago, and I'm glad I stuck through with it, and don't regret a second of it.

Lows:

For the Elite, the lows would probably be the obvious CvM/Goose situation which derailed the whole community for a bit there. I felt it was an absurd situation that I was uncomfortable being a part of.
There were several times I wanted but never achieved and/or never was motivated to go for. These include:
-Archives 16
-Cradle 34s (33 on agent now)
-S1 SA/00a 1:51s
-Invest Agent 1:03

For IRL, it was a rough experience living on my own for the first time ever. I spoke before about lost motivation, and that was definitely a theme for me this past semester. There were too many days where I just wanted to put off my responsibilities and just get away from everything. I will take this first semester as a learning experience for future semesters, and really, for the rest of my life.

Goals:

Some of the times I want to go for in 2019 include what I mentioned above, and:
-Runway SA 22
-Cavs 102
-S2 Agent 46
-S2 SA 47
-Better statue times
-Maybe Invest 102 if I get lucky?  :nesquik:
-Top 80 in both GE and PD

And IRL, I want to gain the lost motivation from last semester, which I would like to result in improved GPA, a better social life outside of the internet, and make even bigger an better strides to transition to the music composition degree.

HIGHS:

I joined the-elite in December of 2017, but only started playing around may-ish, and I've been having a great time getting to know everyone here  :)

I'm very proud of all my pb's, but some that stand out are
- Runway 22 (my first wr)
- Runway 00 <37 (new strat)
- Jungle 53 (first non-boring-4 level)
- Depot 24 (first semi-rel time)

For the highs IRL, I dropped my 5k time down from a 19:11 (freshman year) to an 18:35 (current, senior year). In addition I made varsity Cross Country for the first time, which was awesome.

I also got accepted to my #2 choice college (VCU), and am looking forward to hearing back from my #1 (JMU) and hopefully getting in there  :grinning:

LOWS:

Moving always sucks, and I went from San Diego (where I lived for the past 3 years) to Italy. It's not all bad, but leaving friends is never fun

My grinds for B1 17 and Runway SA 22 seem to be never ending, but I'm sure I'll be able to post them in 2019

I sometimes find it quite difficult to grind out a single time and just bounce around the levels endlessly, leading to nothing but wasted time

GOALS:

For GE/PD, I have several goal times
- Runway SA 22
- B1 17
- Archives 16/54/54
- Frigate 23
- S2 46
- Defection 5
- Runway 00 sub 32
- And many more!  :nesquik:

With IRL stuff, I hope to get into my goal college and pass all my classes when that time comes around. I'm planning on majoring in History with a career path in teaching  :azn:

Well anyway, I hope that everyone here has a great 2019, and is able to accomplish everything they set their minds too

my elite goal is to have 0 points at the end of next year

Real life goal is to change my life for the better--I've been rather unhappy lately and when that's the case you gotta do something about it.

2018 was a pretty lukewarm year in many aspects. Probably the worst year for me overall since 2014 with some frustrating and emotionally draining occassions. It did have its amazing moments however.

Highs:

- Visited 7 new countries including Easter Island, Chile. The entire trip to South America went smooth (the entire journey was tailor-made by my travelling partner), and at the same time was one of the more relaxed and fascinating journeys I've been on. Always been intrigued by the unique culture on Easter Island and its remote location. Experienced some truly unforgettable moments. Unlike previous trips, this time the hiking wasn't the main purpose of the trip but rather exploring the island and South American culture (also stayed in Santiago and Buenos Aires as well as Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world). Ushuaia reminded me much of northern Norway. As a bonus, we changed planes in Panama and briefly entered the country. The other countries I visited in 2018 were European ones and the main purpose was hiking: Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia. While not as fascinating and unforgettable as South America, driving and hiking around in the Balkan countries was cool in its own way.

- The World Cup went pretty much the way I wanted. Probably my favorite World Cup overall (l've experienced 6 in total) as far as results go (my most disliked teams kept being eliminated one by one etc)

- Got a PR in GE

- Got a PR in PD

- Expanded my already massive film collection with some rare titles (mostly Swedish out of print DVDs) and awesome director blu-ray boxsets.

Lows:

- Played Aztec 00A for a few hours trying out the new strat. The session was a total failure.

- Death of grandma

- The somewhat depressing feeling and realization that 2018 can be desribed as a transition year both emotionally and professionally. 2018 was a turbulent year. While transition can indeed be positive, the overall feeling was that many IRL things - minor and big - changed from being good/OK to worse.

Goals:

- Hope that 2019 becomes a more fruitful year.

- Will try to get copies of some of my favorite films that I'm still missing from my collection.

- Hope to continue my streak of getting one/a few PRs in both games every year.

- Improve workout and exercise.

- Consume and eat less sweet products.

- Visit at least one new country.

Highs:

Joining the ranks in March and breaking Top 40 in GE by the end of the year (granted with an unhoard but still).
6 TWR's in normal ranks (although only 1 is WR anymore).
Very well received Ten Part video series on GE speedrunning.
A very successful unhoard in Part 11.
Steady improvement in my skill level.
2-tap strat untied in Runway 00A 34, an untied 5th place PB.

Lows:

Spending untold hours going for Cradle 34's, only to lose WR sweep after 16 hours of holding it.
Spending 3 weeks on B1 17 with old strat, and then several months later it takes people no time at all.
Still unable to get Egypt A 46 and Statue A 2:20.
The biggest choke of my entire career with my Depot 00A 50 (watch it if you haven't).

Goals:

Runway SA 22 (AV back on the ranks + 5th place on lbs)
S1 A 1:02
Better Silo Times (it's my worst level by far atm)
Play a lot of PD for summer league

2018 thread: https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=22258

Highs:
GE:
finally got Dam 54 after failing in League '17 to get much of anything.
Improved many of my really bad times like Dam 00, Depot 00, Archives A
Moved some of my PRs into late 90s WR territory.
Extremely close to undoubted (need train 00 and caves 00 iirc)
All times sub 10 minutes!!! I'm pretty sure this happened.
Had lots of fun fighting for top 300 time ranks.

PD:
Finally got back to this game. It's now my favorite game on the system.
Beat my first few LTK levels, got some LTK points!
Nailed some really sick headshots in DLTK Duel, getting a solid 10(?)
Duel PA would have been points. Still happy with it.
That first WR! (Duel 3)
OFOS Perfect-er untied sweep that lasted maybe a day: Maian SOS
Almost undoubted/not a noob! (Haven't cleared Maian PA)
Improved Defection A to sub 15(?)
Pulled off a flawless P2 barrier skip (pauseless/no intentional lag generated)
Unlocked a bunch of cheats
Unlocked a bunch of cool maps in multi.

Real Life:
My temp to hire job turned into a probationary period for six months, then full time. Benefits are awesome. Job is awesome. So happy to finally be financially independent, even if just barely.
Went on an awesome paid vacation. First ever paid vacation.
Caught my biggest fish. It was {.                               This big.                                      }
(It was like 24lbs idk)
Saw and met some awesome bands at an outdoor music festival
Made some good father-son memories. It's important to me as I get older.
Got off of third shift at work and now work four days a week. Fuck yeah.

In other games:
The Switch is awesome. I played 200+ hours of Zelda: BOTW, 140+ hours of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a bunch of Sonic Mania (Plus), and a bit of smash ultimate (had all but Greninja unlocked within a week)

Lows:
GE: no points
PD: no points aside from D/LTK/OFOS
1080: after a lot of drama, came to terms with the fact that so many people I once looked up to in gaming were most likely fake. Killed almost all motivation for me to play this game ever again. I didn't get along well with the new community either. I think any goals I had for this game are meaningless now. Sucks. At least I stood up for what I believed in and maybe(?) helped prevent Goose from tarnishing someone's name.
Back to GE: getting wrapped up in too much drama. Still don't consider this community friendly, but it's improving with Goose gone (I don't hate him btw. Content is awesome when it's about history and strats.)
Real life: so many close calls driving home on third shift. I thought for a while about getting a new job just to survive the commute (I'm now a pro at sleeping while driving and gaming. It's not a good thing)
My uncle passed away. He was one of those people that left a void in the hearts of an entire town.

Goals for 2019!
GE: some sort of challenge run, like complete LTK or ER
PD: 100% completion
Other games:
buy 12 games, start 12 games, beat 12 games, complete 12 games, challenge run 12 games. It's to get more variety back in my gaming life.
I was in a game called I Wanna Be Like Brisulph back in 2011/2012. It's being remastered. I want to redo my lines and help with the remaster. I want to rekindle my passion for game design and this is a good place to focus my efforts and apply what I've learned through speedrunning/score attacking/forum-hopping for the past 6-7 years.
Real life: have more balance in my life, be more positive, work at hobbies I've been ignoring.

Review of last year's goals:
Quote
Goals:
GE: work on times across the board. Steadily build skill. Fill all N/As.
PD: same as above. I'm in no rush to get points. I'd rather gain a better understanding of the levels and work on my technique so I can leave the game for months and pick right back up within an hour or so.

RL: I got a guitar for Christmas. I should probably learn it.

GE: I rotated my hit list methodically and steadily built skill. I filled all N/As in GE (didn't know I had any). Success!
PD: I got a lot further in this game than I expected. I used the same strat for both games. I played in early 2018 and then again around late summer. A significant amount of skill remained and it was easier to improve after some time away.
RL: I didn't learn much guitar. I gave back the bass I wasn't learning on. I really thought I'd learn it. I wanted to feel like I didn't need gaming, that I was above it if I could learn to play music. It's fucking hard. It has a steeper learning curve than Sonic Riders. This is a huge disappointment in 2018's goals.

Thoughts for 2019: it's been ten years since I failed all my classes freshman year. Ten years. I was a fucking moron. Stay in school. Time doesn't magically change behavior. It is what it is, but it's also what you make it.

GE Highs:
-Got Bunker 17 when it was still a WR. Took over 200 hours for sure.
-Stayed in top 100 points, barely.
-Saw Jimbo get Runway SA 22 live AND play for his wedding in a span of 24 hours.
-Got a dazzle so I can stop using cameras for video proof...

GE Lows:
-The amount of time it takes me to get even novice PRs by today's standards is depressing.
-Watching Bunker 17 not be a WR anymore.
-Watching Dam 53 not be a WR anymore (just kidding, congrats Karl!).
-Knowing a lot of the elite I knew growing up have moved on from the game because life happens.
-Train is my worst level, and any PR I get will most likely be pointless.

RL Highs:
-Graduated with a doctorate in church music. No more school ever again!
-Got a great organist job at a Cathedral in MN.
-Moved to a state that has lots of eliters in it.
-Happy baby, happy wife, happy life!
-Played for Jimbo's wedding.

RL Lows:
-Getting fired from previous job before the great new one, obv.
-Moving for the 8th time in 10 years.
-Missing out on the VA meet again.
-Maintaining a consistent weightlifting regimen with a young child was impossible to do.
-I don't think a read a single book last year just for fun.

GE/PD Goals:
-Stay in top 100, barely.
-Undoubted Achievement.
-Get back into PD 100.
-Make the 100% switch to 1.2

RL Goals:
-Continue to balance family/work/personal/gaming lives in a 24-hour day.
-Run first marathon (yes, the irony of the RL Low of weightlifting is not lost on me).
-Organ recording projects, both church-music related and Goldeneye related.  :v
-Actually read all these books people have gotten me for Christmas.
-Get to VA again (very doubtful).
Title: Re: 2018 - Highs & Lows & Goals for 2019!
Post by: Time was untied when set. on January 10, 2019, 01:41:35 pm
2018 Highs:

- Achieved my first untied in years with S2 00 123 , bopping the Double nade double degen strat untied of 124 Boss had which seemed impossible prior to the window strat grind. Illu inspired me to play this when he got a 126 2 clip first cam run (2 clip loses 3ish seconds)
- Kicked off the Cradle madness when I went for 33 with right side console strat and then this ended up causing irie to find the nade strat. Obviously after a while I would have had a nade blow the console up but its also possible i would have given up before it happened, so Im glad it did when it did. Seeing cradle go from 34s which we all thought were maxed to 33s was nuts in any case. I also got the 33 sweep first which was nice.
- Jungle 00 53 untied to cuck karls sweep. I wont lie, this was my most satisfying time since villa 122 because of what it meant to me. It was Jap and 1.2 which is incomprehensible, and I only had one 54 fail. 54 On jap would honestly have already been pretty amazing, even with 2.x just with how shit the level is. And i took like a week to get 53 sa due to troll luck and a couple chokes so to cake it on 00 after that grueling grind was very satisfying.
- Invest zoom craze. This was the most fun I have had speed running since like 2008. Its so nice when a new strat is found that actually makes a level far, far better. Seeing laser skips get pwned was the best feeling I have ever had  in my speed running career. I always loathed the triple laser skip on sa especially , and I had put quite a lot of time into the level prior to the skips being found which I was never naturally skilled at, so it felt like I got pretty screwed and like the laser skips ruined the fun of the level and the feel of the run. I liked the bot randomness and the feeling of seeing an insane bot, and double skip on agent was pretty cancer. In the end i emerged with a few sick untieds which reflect my skill and time on the level so I ended up happy and felt like there was redemption.
- Did a pretty good job maintaining my fitness regimen and making gains. trying not to obsess over this as much now though.

2018 Lows:

-Ended up losing my job in mid august to my surprise, something I was never expecting to happen. If you look at my pr history, every single time except for 3 I got in 2018 was after that. This just goes to prove that being gen and being succesful in speed running dont work out at the same time. In the end though it ended up being a blessing to be forced to find a new career path and now good things will be coming from it as I have a new better job and it pushed me to want to go back to school so now I will be going to school soon.
- Extraction 117 on a run that should have been 116, one of my most underwhelming and anticlimactic conclusions ever to a grind. I may go back for this later, but seeing as how PA is degen and Agent 47 isnt realistic the incentive simply isnt there unless its shown Jap is faster or a new strat is found.
- Didnt get jungle 49 even though I really should have, and sa 53 took a lot longer than it should have with several 52 fails on choked runs. One was xenia drone LOL and the other was ammo dump because I shot too high. That run also lost a second on drone after xenia because I wasnt prepared to deal with a running xenia with the weapon switches having to be earlier.
- I did get the 33 sweep first but it took way longer than it should have. Had the worst luck ever on both sa and 00 and below average luck on agent. Felt like I was in jail forever.
-Several PB grinds that went nowhere. Bunker 2 00, bunker 2 sa, frigate sa, dam sa. Every time I went for just seemed like it would never happen and this is the story with going for untieds or good records in goldeneye in this day and age. Unless a new strat is found its just to degen.
- Drama. Lost a few friendships (not that this wasnt my fault in part) and there was just in general more drama than there should have been around the elite for obvious reasons.

2019 goals :

My goal for 2019 is to back off the degen grinds and occasionally play for cakey shit. I still want to untie Villa Agent and SA but I am not willing to grind any more. I am going back to school this late winter/spring for an IT degree or something else, which will be nice. My goal this year is to work on myself and my future and success and not worry so much about getting PBs. I have no desire for a streaming career so this seems like a better path for me. I will try to stream when I can or feel like it. I hope to get at least a few untieds, probably wont play goldeneye this year unless I try more for 49.
