In the last six months we've seen a ton of interest from newcomers who say they want to compete in the VA Kart tourney this Summer. They're all welcome to sign up, however there's no guarantee we're going to have enough spots for them to stay at the Lakehouse... That's why I'm hoping we can find a newcomer willing to step up and rent a place in the area to serve as our "overflow house," the first timers could sleep there and drive in for the nightly Kart competitions. An an example, here's a house with a good rate just down the road from us:

IDK that depends on the lakehouse spots, if there are no spots left it'll be a 0% for going although I do want to contribute to the tournament from home to maintain interest for the tournament in the future (meaning commentate from home not play if you don't know)

First, I have competed in many Mario Kart 64 tournaments in the past 10 years and I am interested competing in the 2019 VA Mario Kart 64 tournament. I will be a newcomer and this will be my first VA Mario Kart 64 tournament. I have confirmed with my work I will have off from June 24th to June 29th to compete in the week long tournament. If I'm invited to compete? My skill level in Mario Kart 64 is above expert and just under master. I have won over 10 local Mario Kart 64 tournaments and have competed in a state tournament as well. It would be fun and an honor to compete against the most skilled Mario Kart 64 players in the U.S., Europe, etc. And hopefully, I will be selected to compete in the 2019 VA Mario Kart 64 tournament. Also, I have been in a tournament with Jon. So, he knows what my skill level is at. Please let me know if I'm eligible and selected to compete because I'm definitely interested and would be an excellent player to race against in the 2019 VA Mario Kart 64 tournament. Thank you.

I checked with my work and I will have off June 24th to June 28th for the tournament. I plan on flying out to Virginia instead of driving and I wanted to let Jon know that and I was wondering if he would be interested flying to Virginia as well with me? Driving will take over 15 hours and flying would be much faster and convenient. Also, my friend Colin who I have competed in many Mario Kart 64 tournaments and is well skilled is interested being invited to the tournament as well and I was wondering if he can? Please let me know the sooner the better and who is interested renting the 12 bedroom, 4 bath mansion by the Lakehouse for the tournament? If we can get 10 or more players to split the cost? That should workout great!

So I went through the site and cataloged all available options within 20 miles and ran the numbers on how much they would cost to rent, per person, if we filled them.

If I were thinking about VA this year as someone who had never attended before, and decided I was 100% serious about going and playing in the Kart tourney, I would immediately put down the $370 to secure this RV (top/cheapest option from the above).

It's not luxurious but all I need is a bathroom and a roof over my head, this does the job and it's the second closest to the Lakehouse. And honestly this place doesn't sound bad at all- the RV is new in 2017, there's a queen size bed and two bunk beds and one pull out couch to sleep on, there's a private dock and kayaks you could paddle around Lake Anna in the mornings before you drove to the Lakehouse for your Kart matches.
Worst case: no other new players end up attending and you're out the full $370. But you've secured a spot in the tournament and will get to spend every evening with us at the Lakehouse.
Best case: six other new players do end up coming, they all stay here and split the bill with you, and everyone only pays $50 for the entire week.

It's looking pretty likely i won't be able to attend this year. My financial situations pretty tight and i can't really justify spending the money for the trip currently.
Hopefully by this time next year I'm in a more secure situation and can attend, because it would be great to come and compete and hang out with you guys.

Nathan and Ngamer, I just wanted to double check and confirm with both of you that I have a spot and can compete in the 2019 VA Mario Kart 64 tournament? Like my previous post, I mentioned that I will have the entire week off from work and once I get confirmation that I am invited to compete at the Lakehouse for the tournament I will be contacting my travel agent at AAA at will book a flight to Lake Anna and also book a room at one of the lake homes near the lakehouse. I haven't got any other messages from other players who want to split the cost of a lakehome, etc. So, I'll have to get a place before none are available. And 2 rooms are available in different locations that I am considering staying at for the tournament. Please, let me know confirming I have a spot to compete in the tournament and also I was wondering what is the address for the lake house the tournament will be at? I don't foresee there being an issue with people in the tournament. Traditionally, the issue is with number of people sleeping in the house. I will let Ngamer confirm

- I'm leaning toward driving rather than flying this year, but will post here if those plans change
- Trent will be flying in to Baltimore, arriving at 11am, and renting a car. he can pick up people who also pick BWI, or who will be at airports along the way that afternoon
- yes Hawk you can compete in the tournament, and so can Colin, if you guys find a place to stay in the area. if you want to save money I would recommend going with the place I linked yesterday

If I were thinking about VA this year as someone who had never attended before, and decided I was 100% serious about going and playing in the Kart tourney, I would immediately put down the $370 to secure this RV (top/cheapest option from the above).

It's not luxurious but all I need is a bathroom and a roof over my head, this does the job and it's the second closest to the Lakehouse. And honestly this place doesn't sound bad at all- the RV is new in 2017, there's a queen size bed and two bunk beds and one pull out couch to sleep on, there's a private dock and kayaks you could paddle around Lake Anna in the mornings before you drove to the Lakehouse for your Kart matches.
Worst case: no other new players end up attending and you're out the full $370. But you've secured a spot in the tournament and will get to spend every evening with us at the Lakehouse.
Best case: six other new players do end up coming, they all stay here and split the bill with you, and everyone only pays $50 for the entire week.
I just rented the RV for 6 people.

Update: With current flights at $400+ and 5 shifts I'd miss at work, this will be about a $1400 trip that I can't afford with a family trip I have coming up this summer.

If you have an issue with that, I live in Southeastern PA. I don't know if you were planning on coming, but maybe we could make that work. You could take a bus down to PA and we could drive from here. Or were you just talking about carpooling from the lakehouse to the RV?

Andy's staying at the RV and will have a car, he'll take himself and all the other rookies from the RV to the Lakehouse and back every day. Your luggage will stay at the RV, all you'd be carrying back and forth would be your controller (you can also bring a swimsuit and towel if you'd like to swim).
The only concern is getting yourself to VA. You could either take a bus/train down to PA to where Andy could pick you up, or else fly into any of the VA airports and we'll find someone to pick you up there and deliver you to the RV.

Maybe there's a cheaper flight that could get you on someone's travel path? For instance Trent can get you if you fly into Baltimore, I could pick you up in Milwaukee, Andy might be able to get you from an airport in PA.

Just to be fair and make sure you understand what you're signing up for....since you said you're brand new to the site.
You will only get one play-in match on probably Tuesday (tournament schedule is not set yet) and have zero chance to advance to the actual tournament unless you have significant multiplayer experience that your time trial ranking does not reflect.

For the main tournament, that is true. You can also just come and play random fun games if you want to.

I DO have significant multiplayer experience. I've been playing for 22 years -- all multiplayer. I've never done time trials before about a week ago, when I spent about 40 minutes per track to get that ridiculous #680.

Nice! You're probably about in the same category as Thomas / 20TS85 from this thread. He has played in a lot of multiplayer events and faced Ngamer a few months ago in a local tournament. Do we have a first-round showdown developing already?!?!?!

Don't feel bad about your 680 ranking, thousands of very talented players have tried their best over the years and it turns out it's impossible to ever reach higher than Semi Pro A, specifically #513.

I had an idea to buy a good quality $10-15 Rubik's cube and teach people how to solve it using a foolproof and easy beginner's method (or people could look up Youtubes themselves, etc). Then I'd leave it out for the week and people can write down their solve times, with the fastest time getting to keep it.
Is that something anybody would be interested in? I'd only do it if there's at least a couple people who might want to give it a try and/or play around with it a bit and improve their time over the course of the week. Would also limit the competition to relative beginners so an experienced person doesn't just end the competition immediately.

Rental car prices are pretty ridiculous. Current options seem to be:
- rent a car
- arrange for someone to come pick me up at DCA on Tuesday evening and ride with someone back to DCA on Saturday
- take the train from Alexandria to Fredericksburg and arrange for someone to pick me up from Fredericksbug and ride with someone back to DCA on Saturday
- take the train from Alexandria to Fredericksburg and take a Lyft and ride with someone back to DCA on Saturday
If anyone is willing to come pick me up from either DCA or Fredericksburg on Tuesday let me know. I'm definitely willing to provide $ for gas/mileage.

Mark, I've reserved a rental car for our flights in on Monday evening. Our departure from DCA is similar to yours as well. No one else has asked to join our party yet.

For Tuesday, I can probably try to help pick you up as long as I'm not in the middle of a play-in match at the time.
I believe in order to get to Fredericksburg from DCA, you'd have to take a metro ride from the airport to one of the stations with regional train access (Alexandria is probably the closest of these), then switch to either the VRE (might terminate at Spotsylvania which could be marginally closer) or Amtrak service to Fredericksburg.
Some people will read the preceding sentence and think it sounds like the absolute worst thing a human could ever endure, while others might see it as an adventure.
If you're not into that, or there are delays/rail issues, a direct pickup at DCA is obviously possible, but at that time of day is probably going to mean the picker-upper will have to leave the lakehouse significantly earlier...the final arrival time will probably be roughly the same.
Oh, and Tuesday??? Sweet.

Scott, I will definitely take you up on the return trip back on Saturday to DCA (and will be more than willing to split the cost of the car/gas).
For the rail adventure, I've actually already done this once before (back in 2011 I think) when I came in on a Monday (and the meet started on Sunday), so this isn't completely new territory for me. I know that I can take the Metro from DCA to Alexandria (Yellow or Blue line - departs roughly every 5 min - ~$2) and then board either a VRE (~$12) or Amtrak (~$25) train bound for Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania. Then it's just the matter of getting to the house which is about a 45 min drive (one way). I also checked Lyft fares from Fredericksburg to the house and they are around $45 (assuming I can find a driver to pick me up), but would definitely prefer to not have to rely on this as there would be no guarantee that I'd be able to find a driver.
Based on my flight times (scheduled arrival 4:15 PM), it's looking like the earliest I would arrive in Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania would be 6:15 PM, but more than likely it would be around 7:00 PM.

Due to the medical bills I have now. I will not be able to afford the trip which makes me very upset because I was really looking forward to the tournament this year. If something changes in the next month for the better. I will let you know. As of now, it's not looking good.

So I had a setback today. The person in charge of hosting us will not be able to get the power system set up in time. I had to cancel the reservation. I'm currently in the process of looking for other places on AirBNB. If anyone comes across anything that's relatively cheap (like 460 per person like the RV was) just let me know. I tried renting the second cheapest one on there, but I think it was taken.
I should hopefully have another place rented in a few days and I can PM the address to everyone whose staying with me.

So at this point; a hotel honestly would be the cheapeast option. How do the other newcomers feel about staying in one? It would likely be a scenario where we have two seperate rooms with three in each room. I think I can find one within like 15-20 minutes of the lakehouse.
Unless I find something cheaper on Airbnb, I think this might be the best route. I'm having a lot of trouble finding places on airbnb that are cheap though.
If you weren't updated earlier, I have to do this because the RV I previously rented will not have power set up by the time we plan to stay there.

I realized that I probably wasn't going to find a good hotel either on the dates of the tournament so I rented the Lake Anna Cottage for 7 people. It's 410 up front. Another 310 is owed on June 9th. Hopefully we can get two more people so we can all split it evenly among us. Like NGamer said, with 7 people it is about 127 for the week.

Paying in person is totally fine, the Ws like to have as many taken care of in advance so they don't have to track people down during the week. But if paypal's a problem for you (don't have an account, or paying in a different currency so they charge a fee, or whatever), it's no problem to wait and pay them that week.

Yes, there's going to be so many Play Ins this year that they will take up all Tuesday and Wednesday. Last year's Finalists (Frankie, JT, Abney, Kyle) won't play their first official match until 4pm on Thursday.
(And honestly if anyone from that group can't make it for the afternoon, we could easily play both their matches in the 7pm to midnight window that evening instead.)

I am picking Lewis up from Dulles Airport on the 24th. I was wondering if anyone could take him back on the 29th if that's when he's leaving. I have to leave the night of the 28th after the finals. I'm driving back home for a family reunion and my birthday on the 29th.
I also have tried to get in touch with Eric but I haven't gotten a response back. Is he coming down with someone because he is about two hour out of my way. I wouldn't be able to drive him. I was wondering if he was getting a bus down to where I live.

Quick PSA for anyone that might need it (since I just remembered this now): metro is doing crazy tack work this summer, which means anything after the DCA stop on the blue and yellow line is completely closed until September. Anyone that was going to use those stations should figure out alternate plans (ie Jones and Clark, go to crystal city for the train instead of king st-old town)

UNO - Bring both TVs please. The CRTs used for the tournament last year were (to my knowledge) dropped off at the house by Josh Nash, who isn't able to make it this year.

I mean I thought Jake was in the B brackets during the play-ins along with Stinson being in both E brackets since they finished 6th and 9th retrospectively in the last tournament.
But anyways back to the pick vid, my Youtube channel name as some of you know is Eric Zubyk and the pick video will be the latest upload come either 6:30pm or 7pm hopefully that is what the outcome becomes if all goes well tonight.

No wonder this video was filmed and uploaded so late in the day. I spent at least 2 maybe 3 hours waiting for the schedule prior to the video. Although I originally wanted to do all 10 of the matches so a pick video wouldn't have to be done tommorow night.
By the way I apologize in advance for my GF's sexy comment when all of us karters (and non karters) are trying to determine how Night 1 of the matchups are going to end up.

11pm- Jake VS Weatherton VS Clark (Mainly the first 2 guys but Clark may have something in him to end up in this rivalry)
12am- Maybe TYG VS PYL (3 letters, 2 contenders, 1 score to settle, who will end up on top? The Young Gun or The All Star?)

Second the key rivalries in the upcoming matches:
1A- Abney VS TYG VS Jake (We'll see how this goes when the time comes)
1B- Frankie VS Jones (They were nearly evenly matched last year so this should be a grudge match or maybe vengeance between these two)
1C- Zoran VS JT (My money is on Zoran here but they'll be the top 2)
1D- Dan B VS Kyle (Possibly a rematch to determine who really deserved to make the finals last year)
2A- Abney VS Jones (Even though Abney ended with a 40 in last year's Semi Finals doesn't mean Jones can't retaliate)
2B- Frankie VS TYG (Those 2 play each other for the first time and it's kind of interesting to see how this turns out)

I think they said semis start 8pm est so if they don't do a break roughly 10pm est which is 12 pm in canberra, I'll let you figure it out what time that is for you from there. of course I went out on a limb assuming you're still in aussie land which lol me if not.
Kart final should be good, everyone left is either a champion of this event, a finalist from last year, or a top 2 ranked player in the world.
30 points being 16th place is pretty crazy, definitely the most competitive round of 16 VA has ever had. I actually thought 49 would get in because of that but it was not to be.
