Title: Can we merge the two home pages?
Post by: Blue Khakis on June 06, 2019, 05:18:19 am
For some reason the-elite.net (http://the-elite.net) and rankings.the-elite.net (http://rankings.the-elite.net) don't link to the same page. The first one has a list of streams, but the second one has login and links to the forum/discord at the top, plus links to all time history, RSS Feeds and related links at the bottom. Could we merge these two so we have everything in the same place?

When I want to get to https://wrs.the-elite.net/ (https://wrs.the-elite.net/) it always takes me a while to find it since it is under "Info", but when I want to get to https://wrs.the-elite.net/goldeneye/ (https://wrs.the-elite.net/goldeneye/), I would expect it to be under the "GoldenEye" tab.
Would be great if it could be added there, too.

For some reason the-elite.net (http://the-elite.net) and rankings.the-elite.net (http://rankings.the-elite.net) don't link to the same page.

The former is the home page for the-elite.net, which contains a lot of material beyond just a rankings site for two N64 games.  At the moment, a lot of the content of the site is not linked to from the homepage for one reason or another, but it is expected that those additional links will come back at some point in the future.

The two pages happen to be visually similar right now, but that has not always been so.  As more content is re-linked to from the homepage, I would expect the number of links in the navigation bar in common with the rankings site to shrink, probably down to just a single tab of links instead of the whole bar. Keeping the fresh news/PRs/streams content on there seems like a positive.  It could be desirable to change the visual styling of the homepage to not match the rankings page, to make it more clear to users that they are in a separate part of the site.

The first one has a list of streams

From !128 (https://gitlab.com/the-elite-net/rankings/merge_requests/128):

Hey! What do you guys think about adding the Events List and Streams List to the rankings homepage?
It would be the exact same data that is currently shown on:
https://www.the-elite.net/
Under "Events & Highlights" and "Streams".
Any opinions?

Responses in the thread were not numerous, in the end we went with just the events list and not the streams list:

I like the idea of events and highlights on the rankings but not the streams list.
Here's why:

streams list can already be found the forums.
it will push the recent pr activity further down the page(see the-elite.net)
the website would feel different (at least for me)

We could still add the streams to the rankings site, but it will require gathering a wider base of opinions.

the second one has login and links to the forum/discord at the top, plus links to all time history, RSS Feeds and related links at the bottom

Those community links are in the Community tab.  The RSS feeds are only about the rankings, not the home page blog (that currently is just an events list) or other content. If we had a related links page for the-elite.net and not just the rankings, it would probably be indicated.

Great idea! I posted it to the coding site so hopefully someone will try to make it happen:
