This is another one of those damned if I do, damned if I don't moments, but I'm sustaining my decision for the 46 to require proof which isn't spliced or edited. Please refer to https://rankings.the-elite.net/proof (https://rankings.the-elite.net/proof) which outlines this: "Splicing, editing, or superimposing video and/or audio to fake a time".
While we obviously know that Aaron GOT the time and wasn't cheating, judging from his past history of honesty and being an all-around decent contributor, player, and person, the time cannot stand simply because Aaron is a great guy. He boldly admits that the footage was edited:

Side note:
I see Luke brought up (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=23158.msg462291#msg462291 (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=23158.msg462291#msg462291)) Sam's S2 47, which is a similar case albeit nothing to do with editing but specifically that there was zero audio. Just because Sam is proven to be an excellent member of the community, doesn't grant him special access to having inadmissible times left as proven on the ranks. Sam also admitted that it was the right thing to do, i.e. he acknowledged his mistake and has since not repeated such an error.

I acknowledge (and have acknowledged in the past) that I've made some mistakes along the way, and have since been remaining assertive in my decisions, which all have reasoning. I know it bloody-well sucks to have a great WR backrolled, and I don't do it to piss people off or cause friction between people. However, I'm adhering to the proof policy that ALL OF YOU are continually adhering to. Since the policy was implemented in circa 2012 and has since received many upgrades, the rankings have become glorious in their visual quality, which is a great example we set for speedrunning et al.
My apologies that this ruffled some feathers, but I stand behind my decision.

I linked the video that is titled as "Raw 1", and the video description describes it as edited. My assumption, and Aaron can correct me if I'm wrong, is that he titled it as "raw" because it isn't a music video, strictly a gameplay video. People titling their videos as "raw" doesn't necessarily mean that it is truly the RAW, unedited footage.

It is explicitly written in the policy already :v ; not to edit/superimpose/splice footage.

just to clarify, (if it needed clarity) i posted those comments in the controversial thread because they are controversial. i actually think this is the right call with luge's frame by frame edit

I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and feelings here.
In the end though I agree with Alec's decision. There is technically no playable raw footage of the run that is unedited. The tape wouldn't play picture correctly at normal speed (it would play the audio,) but it would play at double speed and also slowspeed (frame-by-frame.) I included both to better my chances, but in the end there is no unedited raw, which if passed for proof would open the possibility for other weird exceptions to be argued, which our proof mods don't need.
Alec, I really appreciate the time you took making this decision and fielding the discussion. I regret that it created more work for you and I really, really appreciate it and owe you one. Our proof mods are largely responsible for the joy we get to take in this community.
After going through a lot of thought and feelings here's the perspective I've landed on: Sure, it's disappointing, but not heart-breaking, and here's why:
1. What if this had happened on a higher tier run that I may or may not be able to get again? I would surely vomit. In the end I'm glad this happened on a run like this and not something more prestigious. Even though I love working with VCRs I personally can't take the risk moving forward, which isn't that hard of a pill to swallow. It'll make my travel rigs a little less bulky. :cool:
2. Surface 2 Agent 0:46 is not a hard run to get. This was one of the shorter grinds I've had, and I'd encourage anybody to go for it. I think some top players know that it's not hard, but don't go for it because it's boring and annoying. It's surely Tier 6 or below.
3. I know that you all know that I GOT it. :) To Alec's position, and this I think is most important, there's a difference between everyone knowing that I got the run, and having a run posted to the rankings. Having a time posted to the rankings is a privilege, and is one that should be taken uniquely seriously and should separate the adults from the kids.
4. On a more existential note, this level hates me. When I got 0:47 back when it was a world record, I looked down at the VCR and realized I didn't record it at all, and had to dupe it. It's not surprising for me personally that this would happen on this level, therefor I was able to curb my expectations.
I'd like to reiterate my appreciation for everyone and their talking points involved in the discussion. The good news is that all the work I did restoring the video is not for nothing; I have documentation of that 0:46 for myself, plus I learned how to restore some badly damaged tapes if someone wanted to mail one to me to have it restored in a similar way. I will charge however--I will not do it for free! :v

Thanks for saying that Luge. I was getting kinda worried when people started rallying for you without fully understanding the situation. When you explain your thoughts like that it makes it impossible for anyone to speak for you anymore.
Now, of course I understand that it's lame to have a legitimate record not count on the rankings, but I dont think it's a good thing when multiple people stand up out in the open and call out a proof mod's decision. If anyone should dispute the decision, it should be that player themself. In this situation it was appropriate for Alka to ask the question, because it was definitely unclear otherwise, and we'll aim to be clearer in future.
Overall the situation was well handled and I'm really glad that everyone understands.

the most important thing to take away from all this is that VCRs are still more reliable than amarec and that this is an outlier case :smirk:

Yeah I've got the GV-USB2. Though I started using VCRs shortly after getting back into them. Plus it's fun not having to wait for a computer to boot up in my case. The GV-USB2 is now my primary record again until I get a DVD recorder or another DVR-something. Need at least two. At the height of my streaming I had three: VCR, OBS+GV-USB2 local record and twitch vod. I still may get an expensive one in the future to use as one of my records 'cause tape is cool. So we'll see.
