As good as the symphony of in-game music combined with sometimes hilariously timed sfx can be, it can get quite boring listening to them during extended sessions. To break up this monotony while doing attempts, many players will have something else playing in the background. Feel free to list your preferred background noise here.

I personally have used the following:
-Music
-Audiobooks
-Podcasts
-Other streams
-Movie/Game analysis videos
-Lecture Videos
-Wrestling shoot interviews
-Discord VC
Oddly I find other music distracting most of the time yet people having a discussion or talking isnt distracting. Because of this I usually opt for the podcast or video analysis option.

Very healthy topic
For levels where I use music to tell pace:
Discord VC (Most rel place to hang out btw)
Podcasts, my favorite podcast being Mindscape with Sean Carroll
Twitch streams (Mate pls stream, where's the stream?)
If I play without in game music:
Radio MateCorp
State of Trance podcast
Pauliwoods hip hop playlist
My own spotify playlist with a healthy mix of genres.
Discord VC

Wow, incredible thread. Probably thread of the year.
If it's a high-concentration level where listening to in-game music (for pace) is necessary, then I usually don't listen to any background sound. Example: Control SA/00A.
Otherwise, it's usually one of the following:
the news (Agenda-Free TV)
politics (both left & right wing), though lately I have been trying to avoid it
documentaries (science, technology, history, disasters, etc)
another good Twitch stream
If the level is mindless (e.g. Cradle, S2 00 Agent), I will sometimes listen to a video lecture (typically something related to my career).
If the level has long waiting cinema, I will usually browse Discord, reddit or Twitter as well.
For a while I used to listen to music too, but music doesn't entertain me as much so it's not common for me anymore.

- Music
- Twitch streams
- YouTube videos (Kitboga, Top15s, documentaries)
If I'm playing Aztec, I'd lower any background audio at the pause before the glass or just keep keep it low altogether.
-
I prefer to listen to Clemens' stream while I stream so I can hear him talk shit on my runs while he watches mine :nesquik:
-
I usually like listening to albums as a whole while I grind, unless there are several audio cues in the level, in which case I won't listen to anything.
-
Mainly Half in the Bag, sometimes Clemens' stream (most sessions occur around the same time as his), sometimes music.
Music does distract me on some levels where i need to be listening to audio cues from the game but it's fine most of the time. I hardly ever listen to the in-game music. On some levels I listen to music until I get a run past a certain point and pause to turn it off. For example, I'd listen to music during the cinema on Defection PA and turn off the music when it was time to speech skip.
For specific PRs I remember what I was listening to:
Defection 5 - Half in the Bag (Last Jedi?)
Defection 17 - Funhaus (Hitman Blood Money part 7)
Runway A 22 - Clemens stream
Crash Site 114 - Clemens stream
Crash Site 125 - Music
WAR 25 - Music
Attack Ship 209 - Half in the Bag (don't remember which)
-
-Deep space house
-Ambient shit
-Anjunabeats
Sometimes other stuff but that's the main list
-
-Music
-Youtube (mostly RedLetterMedia)
-Discord VC
-Occasionally a TV show, but only ones that I've already seen before (Star Trek, Flight of the Conchords, Twilight Zone)
-Movie Podcasts

Music:
Rarely. It's difficult for me to find a good volume balance where music is nicely audible without clashing over the sound effects I need to hear. I might pick and play one song and do some attempts to add motivation, but I never feel fully focused.
Even with any regular background noise, like mw, if I'm past a certain point in a run, I'll take any opportunity to hit the spacebar to pause whatever is playing.
Also, if you're wondering why I dont list any eliter channels (except Kevin, which would be for tetris) its because I usually dont watch them while playing, because the sound effects clashing from the same games are really bad for me keep focus under. This is especially bad when its the same level, which isnt all that common, but we do tend to be a little hivemind-y.

Edutainment videos mostly. Also listening to tracks to pick out for my radio show, which are mostly electronic and not that distracting. I’ve managed to condense a lot of my weekly media consumption into times in which I am playing so that I can maximize my efficiency.

If I'm mindlessly grinding something (ie. Cradle), I'll throw on Netflix or something. (I recently rewatched the Indiana Jones Trilogy and also caught up on all three seasons of Stranger Things grinding Cradle agent if that gives you any idea how shit the level is)
If it's a level where I'm quite comfortable and have a good rhythm going (ie. my Duel grind), I'll listen to music on occasion both on and offline. Radio Matecorp, !sr, or just whatever I feel like listening to at the time.
90% of the time when I'm playing though I prefer everything as is, in-game music, fx, the whole spiel. I use audio cues of some variety on just about every stage in GE as well as PD.
VC is also a good option in this circumstance.
I rarely watch other streams while playing (esp. if I'm streaming), but I might try doing this more often while playing offline.
