So this is something I've been working on a bit here and there over the last few months. I have compiled all the WRs 12/31 for years 2001-2019 for both GE and PD (not enough vids to make prior to 2001 worth while). I will do a year every 2 weeks until finally getting to 2019.
I will reveal only the times and vids week 1. Week 2 I will add stats (Duration, Days Untied, and Points Today). The idea is to best determine what the best WR is each year based on strats used back when the times were achieved (determined week 1) as well as how well the times stand the test of time (week 2). Combining these 2 things we can determine the overall best WR for each year or top 3 if that works better. This is an open discussion thread. You can talk about times you think are worthy of best WR of the year and/or rank which ones you think are the best for given year. Safe to say runs without vids likely won't win any of these, but I have them listed anyway.

My personal thoughts for 2001:
*** Frigate 00 Agent - Wouter Jansen (11.12.01) 1:14*
This run is really incredible for the time it was achieved. I believe 2nd place was only 1:18. I remember spending a good while just to beat 1:18 before eventually getting the 1:14 tie back in 2003. Note that the route used is awful (even kills the slowest hostage) and was done PAL/1.1 like most other Wouter times of the day. Who would dare enter the boat without waiting back then? Only WJ.
** Control Agent - Randy Buikema (05.20.01) 4:07*
Solid run given strats used. Most notable thing is no Nat manip strat used at all for first meeting as well as not breaking glass.
** Runway Secret Agent - Karl Jobst (11.09.01) 0:23*
This time outlasted everything else in terms of longevity and was done on PAL and no lookdown really.
** Silo 00 Agent - Wouter Jansen (12.03.01) 1:37*
Pretty big untied for the time it was set (PAL). Times like this were more impressive back in the day since in general living tough levels was a bigger accomplishment with so much lack of knowledge or something like access to JAP.

Probably Wouter's best Silo time in the era.

GE 2002
This was the year where Aztec was completely revolutionized as well as the beginning of lookdown as a strat to move faster. Keep these things in mind when going through the records. Reality was sinking in for 1.1 players that 1.2 was clearly the better control style to use around this time if they wanted to keep up unless being proficient with cruise control. If you know of any vids not listed here, let me know (Wouter/AZ might have stuff from this long ago somewhere?). There might be a few vids linked that are dupe runs.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this time? Lucky run that took advantage of the recent lookdown strategy just a month earlier. The time has held up well for closing in on 20 years old. It was the longest standing WR of all time until Runway A 0:22 recently passed.

I am shocked 1:36 wasn't even nominated when it might in fact be the BEST run achieved in 2008. P2 1:43 was voted WR of the Year in 2008 (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=14198.0) yet that isn't even on the list for PD. At the risk of sounding anti-CEEMI, I think it might be time to ignore the opinion of several new folk until we reach the later years. :kappa:

those other WRs are amazing, Tier 1, but Dam 00A 1:55 is the best WR ever set in the game's history. It'd win the "best WR set EVER" poll.

you also have to consider 1:55 was originally achieved without the open door strategy, improved gate lure, or 2.x start.
even since 2011, with multiple strategy improvements it has only had 1 tie, by the best rare shooter player of all time.

Dam 00A 1:55 is the best for sure. One of the easiest years so far to pick the best WR imo (not that the other WRs are weak or anything but Dam 1:55 is in a different league).

Control 4:05 - Clemens & I had lowered this record second by second from 4:11 to 4:07 in 2008, and 4:05 was realistically as low as we could see with the strats used back then (at least as good as 4:02 with current strats). Over the next few years we would each dupe 4:07 several times, have good-looking 4:06 paces somehow end up being 4:08s, and fail 4:05/4:06 a handful of times because Nat wasn't consistent at the end back then. Skipping 4:06 was epic.
Train 1:23 - Obviously insane for when it was achieved and Marc was only interested in a good quality 1:24 dupe if I remember. To date it's still the WR with only a three-way tie. Not sure if that will change any time soon..
43/52 were good, but they were pretty much the same old 44/53 runs with the hallway shooting strat. Streets 1:12 was great for 2012 and one-GL strat used, but it would have been cooler to see it first happen with 1.2 a few years earlier.

4:07's strength was weakened when I quickly slayed it less than 3 weeks later on an inferior run with the glass strat. That took less than a day after Clemens & I discussed the viability of the glass strat on 00A. This is Best Record of the year, not run.

Surface 2 00A 1:24 - Bryan B. : I don't think it's because this isn't a world record anymore that this run isn't amazing, i would be really surprised if someday someone even PBs with a double grenade strat again, Boss skipped directly from 1:29 to the 1:24 Untied, becoming the first person other than Clemens to untie the level since 2007 too, if double grenade strat was the only way to get 1:24 or better i'm sure this run would still be untied today.

Shoutouts to the Aus crew who watched the 4:04 live at a meet! While 4:03 was great it was honestly just an easier version of 4:04 that was bound to happen. 1:24 deserves to be there because it broke Clemens' (nearly) 9 year streak on the level using an absurd strategy.
