Title: Ace's Cavs 00 1:29 - Obj A first mine placement question
Post by: IDPTheory on November 22, 2019, 02:50:17 pm
Hello all,

As the title suggests, I'm curious about how Ace managed to destroy the first two consoles in the objective A area of his Cavs 00 1:29 untied run.
Reason I ask is I've tried this myself many times and never managed to find a consistent location to plant the mine that would destroy both consoles.
Am I missing something else happening here? Is it simply that I never found the right spot? Or is it just a case of 'sometimes it works, others not' - in which case what's causing the irregularity?
I know it's fairly trivial and I personally can't get anywhere near a time to make it worthwhile but I'd love to know if anyone can clear this up for me.
Oh, and while I think of it, I'm fairly sure I've seen runs that destroy the same consoles with a single mine thrown just above the water line before entering the objective A area (maybe Wodahs?) - Same questions for that.

Thanks in advance for any replies and wish you all the very best.

Hi

Nice level to attempt!

Ace throws two mines in this run, one on the outside wall and then another one on the floor when he enters goes through the door.

Hello there,

Thanks for the reply. It's probably my favourite level in the game but I only have PAL and therefore no body armour which makes it very difficult to survive at anything like WR speed (for me anyway) but I have fun working out my own strats.

I had missed the first mine throw, thank you for pointing that out. I have had it work this way before but couldn't get it consistent at all and usually used a burst of fire upon entering to get the scientist away from the blast. No burst from Ace, did he just get a lucky run there or is he doing anything else to reduce the likelihood of failure? If he's chancing it, why doesn't he do the same with the second set of consoles in the A area from the upper level?
Also, is it understood why, even with 2 mines the consoles don't always blow?

Considering how much of the game is now understood on a technical level, it seems strange that I can't find any definitive info on how this section should be played and why.

Regards

Icy mentions the mine placement as an underused strat in this topic from 2017: https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=21745.msg448319#msg448319
I couldn't dig up where he explained it initially.
Ace isn't the only person to use it (Wodahs also did in his Cavs 00A 130 UWR), but it's still very much an underused strat.

You need to keep 3 out of the 5 scientists alive. Ace/Wodahs purposely kill the first scientist with this strat for speed, and then need to keep the other 2 scientists by A alive per usual, and then successfully do the "spec lure" of luring out a scientist at the end for survival since at least the other one dies. On pal you should literally not think about these strats as it makes no sense, watch Ace's 1:35 00 and copy since it's on pal and uses somewhat safe strats. You are asking about an underused strat on a version that you will never survive a fast run let alone the scientists.
