Title: 2019 NFL Playoff Preds [Congrats to the Chiefs and qwec!]
Post by: TheFlash on December 30, 2019, 06:49:16 pm
It's that time again. But let's switch it up.

The biggest hit NFL prediction contest of the year has been the Supercontest. This year, we're bringing the awesome spread picking format to the playoffs.

Instead of just picking the winners, you'll need to pick against the spread for each game.

*AND*

You'll have the opportunity to push the line either direction to earn bonus points.

Read the rules below and come back Thursday to check on the published lines.

Since we have to wait for the lines, you will have to come back each week to make more picks.  If you want to pick before the lines are out, you can do so, but you'll be limited to the max of +/- 3 points from the published spread.

---

Rules:

- The scores all start at 0, this is a separate contest from the main edition.
- You are allowed to move the line up to 3 points in either direction.
- The number of points you move the line will be added to your score on a win or subtracted from your score on a loss.
- Your pick must be in the same direction as the direction you moved the line.
- Instead of picking 5 games per week, you will pick all games each week.

Scoring clarifications:

- If you don't move the line, you get 1 point for a correct pick, 0 for an incorrect pick, and 0.5 for a push.

- If you move the line 1 point and are correct, you score 2 points.
- If you move the line 1 point and are incorrect, you score -1 points.
- If you move the line 1 point and the result is a push, you score 0.5 points.

- If you move the line 2.5 points and are correct, you score 3.5 points.
- If you move the line 2.5 points and are incorrect, you score -2.5 points.
- If you move the line 2.5 points and the result is a push, you score 0.5 points.

Example:

The published line is Browns -2 over the Raiders.

You could submit any of the following:

MUST pick Browns
-----------------------
Browns -5
Browns -4.5
Browns -4
Browns -3.5
Browns -3
Browns -2.5

Can pick either Browns or Raiders
----------------------------------------------
Browns -2
Raiders +2

MUST pick Raiders
------------------------
Raiders +1.5
Raiders +1
Raiders +0.5
Raiders +0
Raiders -0.5
Raiders -1

Ngamer will post the lines like he always does and I am in charge of scorekeeping.

The official lines will be posted and all results tracked in our 2019 Sheet

But I'm also going to post them in this topic once they're locked in, so people can play just by making a post here.  We'll add your picks to the sheet and tally your results for you over the next four weeks.

Come back Thursday!

Thanks to everyone who played in week 1. The scores have been tallied and the results are pretty bad.

Luckily for those of you who forgot to pick in week 1, you're actually ahead of almost everyone at 0 points and can join in for week 2!

You should also double check that your scores are correct....this isn't as automatic as the normal mode.

Standings after week 1
1. Thingy 7.5
2. Ngamer 2.5
3. Jimbo 1
4. Lark 0
5. qwec -0.5
6. wheat -1.5
6. Nate -1.5
6. wiff-1.5
9. Neo -2.5
10. Moto -7.5
11. QB -8.5
12. Matt8k -9

Please note that some of you tried to submit picks that aren't quite valid. Please be a little more careful next time. In particular:

- The most you can move the line is 3 points...if you move it 6 points you'll only get a maximum bonus of 3 so don't move it more than you need
- If you move the line, you *have* to pick the team on the side you moved it to. If the line was Browns -5.5 over the Raiders, you can't pick Browns -4.5....you could pick Raiders +4.5 or Raiders +5.5 or just stick with Browns -5.5.

Good news is The Elite did better in Week 2, we picked 12 right and 12 wrong!

Bad news is overall the sum tally was negative a half point.  Took the big risks and failed.

Big winner of the week was Ngamer who was the only one to go 4/4 and left all the lines alone to net one point for each.  Wheat was the only person to score a +4 from a single game, taking the super obvious Chiefs max (-12.5) line.

Standings after week 2
1. Thingy 9.5
2. Ngamer 6.5
3. Jimbo 4
4. qwec 2.5
5. Nate 0.5
6. wheat -0.5
6. Neo -1.5
6. Lark -2
9. wiff -2.5
10. Moto -7.5
11. Matt8k -9
12. QB -13

A couple people tried to move the line to make it easier again. I just ignored that and if you tried to move the line to be easier, you just got credited as if you took the base line instead.

Can't wait for Ng's lines for next weekend!

The Elite crushed the lines in the semifinal week, going 15/20 against the spread. One of the best weeks ever.

Wheat and qwec both went big, nailing 8 and 7.5 points, respectively.  Lark, Jimbo, wiff, and Matt8k all also went 2/2 on the week.

Standings after week 3
1. Thingy 10.5
2. qwec 10
3. Ngamer 7.5
3. wheat 7.5
5. Jimbo 6
6. wiff 2
7. Lark 1.5
8. Nate 0.5
9. Neo -0.5
10. Matt8k -7
11. Moto -7.5
12. QB -19

With one game left, anyone in the top 5 could still win it. No bonus points for anything special in the final week but you can guess the final score for a tiebreaker if needed.

The line is official, our Super Bowl betting comes down to

Chiefs > 49ers by 1

As mentioned above, pick the exact score for a tiebreaker along with your bet!

It's all over!

It was a tight split with 5 Eliters shading toward the 49ers and 5 going for the Chiefs. The margin of victory was so large that all Chiefs choosers won the points they risked.  Overall, the positives outweighed the negatives, with The Elite coming out 8 points ahead this week on 10 pickers.

Both Jimbo and wheat managed to nail the big 4 points, but it wasn't enough for them to pass qwec, who sailed into the victory by a whole point over wheat.  Even though wheat went 4, 4, 4 on the final three games, it wasn't quite enough to make up for a rocky start.

Final Standings
1. qwec 12.5
2. wheat 11.5
3. Thingy 10
4. Jimbo 10
5. Ngamer 4.5
6. wiff 3.5
7. mw 2.5
8. Lark 1.5
9. Nate 0.5
10. Neo -0.5
11. Matt8k -7
12. Moto -7.5
13. QB -22

Thanks to everyone for playing and congratulations to qwec on the well earned victory after scoring negative points in the first week.

How did we like this format compared to prior years where we just made straight picks?

Things to think about for next time:

- Did we like picking against the spread better than just outright winners?
- Did we like being able to adjust the spread to strategically bet extra points?

---

Also, the all time standings have been updated:

With 13 players, this was the second highest level of participation since 2013! Tough competition!
