Ok, this might be more of a pre-announcement than an actual tournament announcement, but we live in weird times.

Races are(/were?) a speedrunning staple. But haven't really been a part of the Elite community while I've been around.

I've had this as a bit of a random idea, and haven't really progressed it. So I figured I'd start this thread, get some input and see where it goes.

WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT (feel free to skip this and just read what I'm proposing)
League isn't coming until June. Many of us are in some form of lockdown. What can we do to fill the gap.
If we did a straight RTA race Noobs are massively disadvantaged against mid level players, who likewise have little chance against top level players. Level specialists also have little chance.
Real time races can be hard to coordinate - even in these times of social distancing and self-isolation we've got to deal with international time zones and individual sleep/work schedules and circumstances.
Steve and I had a good time with the one-shot Egypt race at the end of MateChat Ep1 (https://youtu.be/iANsEO23-W0?t=4226).
I'm not a golf fan, but I'm loosely familiar with the Match Play (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_play) style of tournament, where your score isn't carried from one hole forward to the next, but each hole is worth a point no matter how good/bad the actual score on the hole was.
GE Agent run has 18 levels, Golf has 18 holes. Aztec is a perfect tie breaker (odds of two players getting identical times here are limited) and if we go in to super overtime then the Baron will sort it out with death RNG, and super duper overtime of Dam 00 should sort it out...

A match play style tournament could let Player 1 set a time on the 'Front 9' streaming at a time that's convenient to them, Player 2 is then given 24 (or 36, 48...?) hours to respond by posting a full run. Player 1 then get's to return on the 'Back 9'.
If you can coordinate calendars then players might like to go full golf style and go hole for hole, letting the winner of the previous level take first attempt at each new level

This obviously needs some sort of honesty system, think it would be best if this were in a one shot style race so streaming 'the run' is probably the best way to handle it. NO MULLIGANS!

Some sort of handicap system might be possible - giving chance at a real upset victory for a noob over an established player. Just spitballing here, but maybe Top 20 players are given a starting score of -5, or a new player with PTRs as best times can be given a +6 start. Probably need to have a supreme tournament ruler to dish out handicaps with abandon.
Maybe some old players could use this as a chance to come back in to the game in a safe way, with the right handicap of course.




WHAT I'M PROPOSING
GoldenEye 007 Match Play Tournament to run before League 2020

1 vs 1 tournament, GE Agent one-shot run. First and only one attempt allowed at each level. Death or reset in a level = PTR + 3 mins as registered time for that level.
Clearly show the end screen for level time - it's not RTA, no need to mash.

Run starts at Dam and finishes at Cradle
Player 1 will pause at the end of the 'Front 9' (B2), Player 2 will record their complete run in agreed timeframe and Player 1 returns and plays the 'Back 9' (Statue - Cradle) - this means that both players don't need to be live at the same time, but the 'race' could be battled over the period of a day or so. Players can feel free to 'race' concurrently if they can coordinate times between themselves.

'Match Play' style scoring rules - 1 point for each win, points pushed forward to the following level. Example scoring in spoiler

Player 1: Dam 55, Fac 52. Player 2: Dam 55, Fac 48   -   Player 2 takes 2 points

Player 1: Dam 55, Fac 48, Run 24, S1 105. Player 2: Dam 55, Fac 48, Run 24, S1 107   -   Player 1 takes 4 points

Winner is determined by who has the most points once both players have completed their runs

Failure to stream a run in agreed time = forfeit

Tiebreaker is Aztec Agent, followed by Egypt Agent if required. Further tiebreaker levels agreed between players - Frigate, Statue or 00A difficulty recommended.

One shot runs only, streaming highly recommended.

Tournament could be played with handicap rules, but this might be hard to do for a first time.





Hope I've outlined my concept well.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO GET STARTED
1 - Need players to sign up/express interest (sign up below)
2 - Want your feedback on how a tournament like this could work, what are the issues we'd run in to, what tournament format should we use (Grand Slam style single elimination bracket, World Cup style pools then finals, Fighting game style double elimination...?)
3 - There's some clever people in The Elite, maybe someone could develop a lightweight web interface to capture, compare and score runs. This isn't essential though - easy enough to track in a Google sheet or something. Maybe LiveSplit has some feature to do this I haven't used - similar to how MTPO runners calculate their runs using IGT or something.

OTHER THOUGHTS
If this is interesting then maybe we could look at some other formats - match play with teams/captains (would require a fantasy sports like ranking/points system for picking players), 3/4 ball style tounament (teams of 3/4, pick the best time...)

PD players - I'm sorry this isn't super inclusive, but for the most part you know how to run GE agent and even if you aren't super strong in a level or two then maybe this is still a chance to take part as you're only giving away a point or two. Also, if the format works this could be a great way for more GE players to get in to PD.



Edit: I've already changed the proposed name of the tournament from League to Cup - If GE was English football this could be the 'FA Cup' to the Summer League's being the 'Premier League'.

Random level order is a good idea! Might make it more interesting for players.
Only minor drawback is maybe more difficult for non Eliters to follow - but this wouldn't be a Break The Record style tournament, so it's not really a concern.

Maybe we have a randomizer generate a pick of levels, or perhaps Player 1 gets to pick a number of levels for their 'front 9'.
Open to any possibiliy.

Randomly generated best of 5 or 7 would be pretty sweet.

We could create a ladder and do it tournament style, have a winners, losers bracket, etc. Very keen on this.

Vetoing stages is probably a way to get more people in.
Could make for some interesting tactical choices too - do you veto your rival's strongest level, or your worst one? If you're a good player going against an OK one do you veto Frigate or Statue to reduce impact of RNG..


I kinda like the randomly generated idea - even something like this for a lo-fi way to get started

Without reading anything I think Clem and myself did something like this back over 10 years ago at a past meet. It's pretty fun from what I remember of it. It was just comparing what each of us would get on each level 1 try, nothing fancy or anything. This was back when agent any % barely existed though.

We have mutually agreed on two bans:
Front Nine: Frigate is banned
Back Nine: Jungle is banned

Due to technical issues with HCM’s computer, he will be attempting to stream via his phone.  I have accepted this work around.

Thanks to everyone that's signed up. Hope this should be some fun and fill a bit of a gap while many of us are in some form of lockdown.

Ok, here's an attempt at making a few tournament rules. These aren't exhaustive, but we're all keeping it CEEMI; so don't be a hypercompetitive asshole and we'll be ok.

1. One attempt at each level, fastest time (using IGT) takes the point for that level
2. If previous level is tied then points carry forward to the following (see scoring example in spoiler tag on OP for scoring clarification)
3. Play through levels from Dam to Cradle in order on one file, on one cart (this is to prevent alternate files being set with 2.x and switching between them)
4. Players should take turns, with Player 1 playing the first half of the levels (giving Player 2 an advantage on the first half) then Player 2 plays their full match, and Player 1 gets their attempt at the second half (giving Player 1 the advantage on the second half)
4a. If players mutually decide to play concurrently then this is also acceptable
5. Each player can ban one (1) level, these choices should be posted to the forum thread before the match to avoid later dispute (this makes a total of 16 levels per match)
6. Players can decide between themselves who takes first turn, coin toss is suggested if disagreement over who should go first
6a. If no agreement over who goes first then the lower seeded player will go first - this is due to forfeit, see Rule 9.
7. Reset, fail, death, etc. will be marked as an N/A - if both players get N/A then the point is carried forward to the next level
8. Not a rule, but it is strongly recommended that attempts are streamed, for transparency.
8a. Recommended to post Twitch/YouTube VOD to the thread
9. Final scores must be posted to the forum thread by close of each round. Interim scores are welcome and will be used to identify forfeit if required.
9a. If Player 1 has not posted the first half by close of the round this will count as a forfeit
9b. If Player 2 has not posted their match by close of the round this will count as a forfeit
9c. If you take to long to post your section of the match the grand overlord will omnipotently decide who forfeits
10. Rounds are expected to take 1 week - please play nice and give each other enough time to return (ie. if you're Player 1 takes 6 days to play the first half then they're at risk)
11. Dormie rules apply - match can be declared over when the leader's score is greater than the number of levels left
12. As grand overlord of the GE Match Play Cup I reserve the right to add, remove or amend any rule I want at any time


FAQs and clarifications

Can I pause?
Sure. IGT is king for this race, so pause all you want.
Can I use 2.x?
Use of 2.x is a legitimate practice, BUT you only get one attempt at each level including any menuing.
This means that you'd need to pause on a previous level and switch to 2.x - eg. if you wanted to gain the advantage of 2.x on Runway you'd need to pause and switch to 2.x in Facility (or just be Gus and play Fac in 2.x  :nesquik:). You'd need to work out where to pause to switch back to 1.2 as well.
Can I wait cinema?
Yep. IGT is king. It's up to you to balance consistency and pace
Are you going to manipulate Rule 12 to win the tournament?
Yes. Rule 13 is "If your alias is Yendis then you forfeit Round 1."  :kappa:
Ok, not really. It's just there because this is a brand new format and I can't guess all the issues that might come up. Just giving us some wiggle room to update the rules if a race breaking glitch is found.
We'd also talked about handicaps, randomizing level orders?
Let's keep it simple for this first time.
I intend to use the data from this tournament to see if handicaps are viable.
Maybe those of us that get knocked out early can run a side tournament to trial some of these wilder ideas
