Title: Is Jono "dsxcorner" the most influential speedrunner of the modern era?
Post by: RWG on June 16, 2020, 10:25:41 pm
Speedrunning in the modern era, the last half-decade or so, particularly single-level or time trial speedrunning, has been defined by the act of hoarding.

Hoarding isn't exactly a new phenomenon.  I believe Wouter hoarded a handful of times in the 00's.  Henning unhoarded to "pass Boss" for 3rd place on the rankings around 2011-12.  The tactic was often used to lull competition into a false sense of security, while you were secretly racking up enough PR's to pass them on the rankings, all at once.

However, Kapap changed the hoarding game forever.  We saw storing up a few PB's, combined with funny sketches, inside jokes, great music choices, and an all-round good time.  Countless people were inspired to pick up the controller and join the-elite community after watching the original Kapap trilogy, and the subquent hoards it too would inspire.

I don't want to minimize the involvement of the three original Kapapsters, as they all had a huge role to play in the original Kapap, which began the momentum of hoards pretty much becoming the new meta in single level & time trial speedrunning.  But it's safe to say that Jono "dsxcorner" did the brunt of the editing, which made the Kapap series the legendary trilogy it has become today.  All participants' creative inspiration certainly influenced the project and have a share in the overall influence of hoarding today, but it certainly seems as though Jono was at the "helm" of the projects, most of the time.

Today, hoarding really is the new meta.  We've recently seen the first new Mario Kart 64 champion in seven years, crowned, thanks in part to a remarkable hoard of epic world records.  We've seen Wodahs reach 1st place in Goldeneye via a hoard, and seen Ace take back 1st place in the following big hoard.  Always, at any given moment, folks are wondering, "who is hoarding?  What WR's are being hoarded?  Is this WR I'm playing for still even the WR?  Or is someone hoarding the untied?  Is Statue 00A 2:17 possible?  And is it being hoarded?"  For better or worse, runners seem more hesitant to stream... possibly because they're secretly hoarding instead.  Even new players have hoarded to get into the Top 100, or to get 0 points on the rankings, showing just how far-reaching this phenomenon has become.

Every single aspect of single level & time trial speedrunning is affected by hoarding.  Even if no one is hoarding, the thought always remains... "what if someone is hoarding?"  Speedrunning single levels & time trial speedruns will simply never be the same, for better or worse, because of the prevalence of hoarding. Which is due, in large part, to the original Kapap hoarders, but I believe, especially due to Jono "dsxcorner", whose editing and production skills are responsible for hoarding having become the phenomenon it is today.

So my friends, with that being said... is Jono "dsxchallenger" the most influential speedrunner of the modern era?

I'm not too aware of any other unhoards dsx has influenced/inspired outside of GE/PD, except for the recent Mario Kart 64 one of course.

I found the elite back when wouter was the shit and jim barrett was on the podium in 3rd...I watched wouter/jim videos and was totally amazed  Part of me is still waiting for Wouter's biggest unhoard ever. I know he's mid-30s and it won't happen but man... Can't believe he's down to 49th now. I guess a lot of that is from new strats though, his skill in the day is easily worthy of top 20 today.
